With so many topics to study, you may not know where to focus your attention. In this video, I will give you some tips to organize your schedule and decide what you should work on. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced speaker, you can always find something to improve on, and I will give you the tools you need to devise a good plan. [Singing] Hi. James. Greer. James Greer. From engVid. [Laughs]. Not Bond, and I know you think I was going to say Bond. I know. But listen, Bond always has an important mission he's got to do, right? 007. And so do I. Today we have a mission. We're going to learn how to study English. I know in many places, many websites, they tell you, and to teach you grammar and idioms and phrasal verbs. But then, there's the big question of you, and: How do you study, and how do you choose what is important for you at this moment? Maybe you're advanced. Maybe you're a beginner. Maybe you know this, and maybe you don't. After today's lesson and we do our mission, you'll know exactly what you have to do. Okay? So, we're going to go to the board in a second, and take a look. What steps should we take in order to learn? By the time you're done this video, you'll know exactly... Or you should know where you are, where you need to go, and when you're going to be done. Ready? Let's go.
E. E is standing here saying: "Where do I start? Grammar, vocabulary, or speaking?" Common, and seems to make sense, I mean, you go to learn a language-right?-you go on a website, they start throwing things at you. You go to a school, they say you need this, this, and this. But you don't really know. So, I'm going to give you the tools to decide that.
First thing we're going to do is: What's the first thing you need? Grammar? No. What? Conversation? No. Vocabulary. What? Well, look. If you can't say: "bathroom" when you go to a country, you're going to pee yourself. Okay? "Hungry", you won't get food. You don't need to know everything to get basic information done. And that's what we should look at first. Basic information for a beginner really is vocabulary. And instead of all the fancy stuff you need, you don't need much. You need you, and a little bit of time, and to have some fun.
Why? I'm going to suggest: For basic communication, get vocabulary. I'm telling you right now if I see you or any English-speaking person sees you, and you see... You say: "Drink. Thirsty." There's no grammar, but they'll go: "Oh, the bar is over there." If you say: "Washroom. Please", they'll go: "Oh, toilet is over there." They use sentence, you use words. Sometimes you just touch your belly and go: "Ahh!" They'll go: "Oh, you want food." You don't need all that stuff. People will tell you you need to learn grammar, and this and that. You don't.
And here's how you get your first vocabulary. Do what you love to do. Play video games. I've had... I don't know how many students play video games, say they learned how to fire, duck, words that we wouldn't teach them for a while, because they were playing games. Other people come in: "Dah-dah-dah-dah-dah, [sings]", singing. I go: -"What the hell?" -"I love to sing", and they sing a song, they sound like they're just, you know, from this country. Then they speak very terrible accent. You know what I'm saying, right? [Laughs] But when they sing, it's like the gods have come down. I mean, literally, you go: "Are you...? You were born here, right?"
Cool slang. You know? YOLO, you only live once. Right? ASAP, as soon as possible. When you do these things, you're learning because you want to learn. You're not even realising you're learning, and it's going to make you want to learn more because... You know, we'll get to the second one and you'll understand. But you want to communicate in a much better way. Okay?
So, get the meaning of basic words. "Hungry", "food", "toilet", "money". You know that one, right? You need those things. If you have those things, you can start your adventure in learning English. Okay? And you're going to do it by doing things you love. Video games, music, cool slang. Right? Come on. Now we're making language fun and easy for you, and that's what we should do, because you'll learn it faster. All right? And then here's the bad news: Hard work is on its way, so let's move over to the intermediate.
Man, I swear you're more than a teacher, you're like a friend who always gives the greatest English lessons and I want to thank you for that.
Great

That's what you're supposed to do!
this teacher is very elegant!!!!
and he's an eloquent person😍
It's really awesome motivating speaker! If my selection of form for the word "motivate" isn't right in my sentence, please correct me.
Um actually at first you have to understand completely what you've written and then write it without any doubt. And about your sentence Is not really come alone with the final word that you'd written "speaker", you're appreciating the "way" of his teaching, so instead of that you could say " it's really an awesome way to motivate us to learn Or whatever it'd be "
↑ but hey I'm not pretty sure about that because I'm still learning like you, so check it again 😅
Thank you, Zed 0! I have very appreciated your message!
Hey guys what are you speaking about?
I didn't understand nothing yet?
Hello, Mr. James, I am a huge fan of yours. I can safely say that I crossed out all of the points that you have mentioned. When I first started, I used to study English (in terms of grammar, vocabulary, and reading) for about an hour a day and spend the rest of the day just watching videos in English and here I am after 3 years, making a comment fully confident with a diversity of words. However, the hardest part for me is that I haven’t had the chance to travel abroad so that I can really have conversations with natives, which I know, it will enable me to use all the words that I studied and memorized over the years, remember them, and use them naturally. Finally - I don’t want to ramble on more lol - for all the people out there who are learning English, trust me IT IS WORTH IT. All you have to do is invest some time into it and be patient and your life will change both professionally and personally.
well done for that👍🙏

this is literally one of the most amazing comments I have ever seen I am an English student I moved to the US 16 months ago I have been learning English to the best of my ability ever since I started learning English I have been wondering where I should start I first focused on reading after a while I noticed that I have surely improved but still not able to have a confident conversation I felt like a monster is holding my tongue back I finally realized that it is important to read but not to put all your time in reading when you are not able to confidently have the basic conversation I strongly agree to the way teacher James classified. thanks a ton, Mr. James.

I would feel completely overwhelmed if I were in their position. I so long to teach them communication skills, that they may be empowered to reach the American dream for themselves. A dream of Independence, prosperity and purpose in living.
You’re definitely the best teacher I’ve seen in my life. I’m Brazilian and I already speak English but with those advices you gave us, I’m sure my English will be even better. Thank you so much for give us this masterclass!

thanks James!
I'm a teacher searching for new ideas here! When he said vocabulary in the beginning of the video I already loved the video... Like all the others for sure.
But I always say the same to my begginer students: What you need for now is basically two things:
1) VOCABULARY
2) DON'T BE AFRAID TO USE IT
R u a English teacher?
So to sum up, first you have to build your vocabulary. After that, you can then move on to grammar. And then, you can do reading and writing. Finally, you can do speaking. Thanks James for sharing this language learning process!
Salam Mr. James !
Thank you so much for being such a dedicated ESL teacher!

Thank you. I still have my South Asian accent, but I've become very very good at speaking fluently and clearly. Thank you for that. THANK YOU. I can have a really great career because of you.
Would it be possible that you make a video talking in a natural and native accent because I'd like to see what the difference is between lessons-talk and real-life talk. It's just a wish of mine, and always love your lesson! : )
Johnny Mina Finally a comment with sense. I'm absolutely down with it. Videos for experienced ESL-learners would be wonderful, not only for beginners.
Johnny Min
In most of his videos, he speaks that way. There's no need for that...
I remember from one of James' previous videos he once said that his original accent is not like the one he uses in his lessons. So that's why I'm curious about an authentic accent of a native english-speaker. Now you get me?..
Oh, got it :)
If you are not subscribed to him because of his teaching skills, Man your sense of humor concerns me.
Great job sir.James the way he communicate to us are just superb.

Thank you, James! Now I know, that I need to learn grammar and to read much more. I understand almost everything you're talking about, but I can't speak yet. best way to learn English is watching shows in English, it's very helpful
Jefferson Fernandes it helps, but u still need some other source.
Yes
Jefferson Fernandes yeah it is, but you must interact with the outer world to improve/enhance your communicating skills.
That can easily be misinterpreted. People fall asleep watching a show they do not understand because of all the words they think they have the right definition for but don't. Thereby become even more stupid.
You're are right
I could understand what you said at all. I am proud myself for this. I don’t know anything about English five years ago.

I'm here in reverse. I'm fluent in only english. But all the videos or books I look into to learn the language I'm interested in starts me in the middle. I feel lost. I came here to figure out what is a good starting point. This method makes sense. I have a nephew who is 4. He learned to speak words before sentences and before he knew what "grammar" was. I could still understand him. Now he's reading small words and learning to write his ABCs. Vocab. I'll start there. Thank you

Hi James, according to you I am a native speaker. I can write, read and speak with no problems. I work in an english speaking environment and have no problems presenting myself and discussing anything. The problem is people still know that I am not a native speaker because of my accent. I want to learn how to be in a group of native english speakers so that nobody will know that I am a foreigner. Please help, according to your video I am already on top and there is nothing I can do.
I get sad when my students do not speak English because they are ashamed of their accents. If you keep practicing eventually your accent will diminish. Be unique, keep your accent.
Adilet Saralinov Are you ashamed about what really you are or where you're from? Let me say you that's not so honest and real on your side dude.

100 percent right on the reading. So many students STOP READING in English after they have reached a certain level and have left university so their English skills go down after some time. When I ask them what they read now, I can tell the question makes them uncomfortable because many read nothing, and many are not interested in reading anything. Looking at the CEFR, I think to myself that there is no way I could reach or retain a B2 upper intermediate level in a language if I stopped reading in it and years passed by. Through reading, I believe many native speakers reach the B2 level in secondary school. Looking at Cambridge B2 FCE exam, you can see that some parts are easy, but part 5 of the exam has a similar level of reading comprehension questioning that you would find on the SAT/ACT exams in America. Reading is one way to spend time "thinking" in the language. Now, I do know there is an issue with students reading in their heads with the wrong pronunciation of the words or not knowing the pronunciation of the words, and that could hurt them when listening and speaking later and when trying to learn/remember the words - so when you see new words you should also learn how they sound. The internet makes the process take about 2-3 seconds. Yes, this is work...
Rozumiem wszystko co Pan mówi. Wow, bo moich nauczycieli od angielskiego nigdy nie rozumiałam. Szkoda że nie ma w każdej szkole takich profesorów.

My friend from Somalia wants to improve on her writing and speaking skills in English, based on the levels that you presented she's at the advanced level. Now the question is, what materials would be of help for me to see to it that she learns? Her Master's class depends on it.
Material thats rich in vocabulary and something that she loves doing or watching.
TV shows, novels and podcasts. If she’s advanced, she can move on to really trying to do things native speakers do. No subtitles for shows.
