You're a clown. The Yaris is great for the price and will last literally decades. It's a beautiful looking car that gets excellent gas mileage and has great suspension and overall handling. Basic as it gets? yea, sure, that's because it is one of the most reliable vehicles on the road. Camaros are fast and fancy and last about 5 good years. Yaris has style and durability.
I had a 2011 Yaris for six years before it was totalled. I still miss it and I took the parkways everyday. Never a problem with the 4 speed auto trans. Absolutely bulletproof.
Good review Tom. I will say this. To me this is a very good looking car. It will sell very well here in Canada where or gas prices are twice yours in the states.
I see mostly elderly folk in my area driving these. College aged kids in my area who are fortunate to drive new have Mazda2's, Fits, Velosters, or Sonics. I'd buy the Yaris over a Versa though any day.
my 2008 smart was made in france too! just hit 60,000 miles on it last month. i usually keep my cars 10 years, but smarts don't rust and i'm single. it has a mitsubishi engine and i've been doing synthetic oil changes on it every 6000 miles, so it should probably last 2-300,000 miles, it will probably out-live me LOL.
2 things about the Yaris vs the Fit...the Fit has a CVT which is much worse and more trouble prone over the long haul than a tried and true 4 speed, also the Fit has no volume button, only a touch slide on ex trim. That gets old real fast.
Hey Tom! Just passing by to tell you thank you for your channel... You actually inspire me to make my own, I'll love you to check it out, I know it's in Spanish but still, you might get a word or two. Please leave a comment if you do and keep up the great work. Cheers
With the manual, the Yaris wasn't half bad to drive, granted I had it in winter, and winter gas in Michigan kills fuel economy but I struggled to get 33 on the highway at a steady 75. I had this almost back to back with a FIT, and for the extra $30 in payment, the FIT is far better, but get the FIT with a manual, though I know in Tom's review most "normal" people didn't mind the CVT, I thought it killed the fun of the car.
Thanks for the input RS. I agree, both these cars would be more fun with manuals. Too bad very few buyers take that route anymore though. And really, if I were going for a manual transmission in a $20,000 car, I would be looking at a GTI off lease.
I took the Sonic over all the other subcompact competition and now I'm a happy Sonic turbo owner with the manual. It's fun to drive, lower road noise than the Fit, cheaper than the Fit, faster than the Corolla, Yaris, Fit, etc with its sub 8 second 0-60 times ($16,300 for LT Manual Turbo Hatch) and I've gotten 40MPG combined over my first 8,000 miles. Plus the 8" touch screen, backup camera and awesome smart phone integration, I'm digging the value proposition.
This car is the cheapest out of the sub compact hatchbacks but for a good reason. This is as basic as a new car can get, but I wouldn't bother with any but the 5speed manual models if you want a cheap new car with warranty.
Here in the UK it comes with a 99bhp 1.3L 6sp or CVT, i got the CVT with does great fuel! 58mpg (UK gal) & it's the same mpg as the 6sp,the 6sp top gear has a good ratio which gives it great fuel, many didn't know that. The wheels in the vid looks like a Design model with 16" wheels, nothing amazing the design models,it just appears fancier to look at but not worth the money. The Excel is the top spec over here as well as Tspirit. Your car seems very expensive. EDIT- All Yaris's here are made in France except the SR, it's not faster lol
All this car needs is a new freaking engine with a 6 speed manual and CVT/6-speed auto. A bump in horse power to Honda Fit's Standards so maybe 130 hp with at least 120 ft lb of torque. COME ON TOYOTA!!!
This is a car you'll see in fleet lots mostly. Strategy wise, the feature-less Yaris actually makes sense. Toyota knows they got a loser product here badly lagging behind the competition so they're just sourcing it with cheap off the shelf mechanicals (namely the age old engine and 4 speed trans) to reap some profitability out of it. Expect a major revamp once the new platform comes around in a few years to actually tackle consumer sales of the current champ, the Honda Fit.
My personal favorite in this range is the Fiesta EcoBoost. That 1L turbo engine is a gem. Close seconds are the Fit and Sonic Turbo. All loaded with manual transmissions of course (it's the only option on the Fiesta EcoBoost), automatics are for babies*. *Family friendly version of the word I was thinking.
A 19k Yaris shouldn't even exist if you can't even get an armrest with it. Only real reason to buy it is the badge. Toyota needs to step up their game a bit they're getting lazy like GM. Reusing the same engine and transmission families for way longer than is acceptable for one of the biggest automakers in the world. It better be reliable for a 4 speed they've been using for over a decade.
Sad that Toyota & others have abandoned the U.S. auto market with regards to true subcompacts. I would take another new 2015-2018 gen Yaris SE hatch (5-MT or 4-AT) over anything being sold today. I would still be driving my 2015 if some idiot distracted driver hadn't killed it back in late 2019 (but I walked away unharmed at least).
For a few ticks over $19,000, I'd rather own the Hyundai Accent Sport with a moonroof, Bluetooth controls on the steering wheel, more horsepower, more gears, a very comprehensive warranty that includes five years of roadside assistance, and many other features not included on the Yaris.
The new Yaris looks cheap inside and its front end is ugly. The new Fit is great inside but outside it is like the first-gen Prius with the boot chopped off - boooring. To me, the second-gen Fit looks best. If shopping from Toyota offerings, I'd prefer the xD. Yes, it is rather old, but to me it looks better - kind of chunky, beefy yet cute - and I think it has more headroom in the rear. P.S. "Must have been designed by origami masters" - two "m[u/a]st" close together - with your broadcast experience I expect better word separation ;-)

Your reviews are always great for the everyday person like myself. It's nice to see a review of this even in the wake of the Fit and the others.

There's a lot of good judgment and experience behind this 5 minute review. Great job.

Driven Car Reviews A brand new Fiesta ST is also an option at ~$20k for a sporty small car.
CJRhoades It costs 22-23k and was rated at the bottom for reliability by consumers who own Fiestas.
pioneer7777777 Nice what color?
Under reviewed.. This car in a 5 speed is the last fun super lightweight car still made today.
My nomination would be Ford Fiesta.

OK, if Toyota cannot afford to put 6 speed automatic then should have bought it from third party

Because I really want a French-made car. *sarcasm*
My 2001 civic gets the same MPG. and dat whole dash wiggle @ 2:58
headcas620 but it's a Civic...
The Fit is better.
I guess you can't review an M235 every week.

A Toyota Tercel with an aftermarket headunit would be better than this.

***** Then do it.
I think The design so bad, different with South East Asia so cool

***** True and the xD had the 1.8 liter motor, it is actually quick with a manual!
Shameful, toyota, shameful...
Zlatan Ibra Reliable, resale, no CVT! All pluses!
