Brilliant review. Really didn't know much about this car, but after watching your review, I can't think of anything else I'd like to know! Top Job Mate!
Some models here in the UK DOES NOT have a spare wheel but an emergency tyre repair inflator, mine had one so got a spare wheel/space saver, kept the tyre repair thou incase of 2 flats.
I really like the look of this car, the headlights do wonders for the styling and this is actually a fun to drive Toyota. Only problem is that the drivetrain is totally out of date, but as long as you get the manual, that's not a huge deal. As for the fuel economy, it's all relative to how you drive. I for one believe that anything over 30 mpg is a win these days. But this Yaris is a very nice alternative even though it still lags behind the Honda Fit overall. Nice review Alex!
O.K. I have been considering both the Prius C, and Yaris for my next vehicle purchase. I have looked at the Nissan Versa Note (whose fuel economy I like), the Honda Fit (also, fuel economy), and have learned that of the three automakers, Toyota products are more reliable. From what I understand, from the reviews I have watched, and specs I have studied, the Prius C and Yaris make the most since. I am purchasing for fuel economy (first), reliability (second), and cargo room (3rd). All models considered have their cons: the Prius is as slow as a slug, and lacks the cargo room I would like to have, but more than makes up for these things with its efficiency; the Yaris is perhaps the last fuel efficient, has marginal cargo room, but seems to make up for what it lacks in its reliability and low purchase price; the Nissan Versa Note, and Honda Fit both boast great fuel economy, but lack reliability, and therefore higher operational costs. My question is this: of you owners of 2014-2016 Prius C (One, Two, or Three), and 2014-2016 Yaris (L, LE, S), what are the pros and cons of your vehicle?
Bobby, it's the low purchase price vs low operational costs question. You'd be far better off in the long term with a 50-60MPG Prius C, or a 36MPG Civic/Corolla.
Robert Cheung It really depends on how much you drive each year. If you drive over 15k miles a year, you'll pay off the extra cost of the Prius in no time. Probably 3-5 years.
I have a 2009 Yaris that is base plain jane model! It has around 290K miles on it - almost all highway! No major repair so far! It does not even have air conditioning or radio inside!
+WuWei Xu That is how I like cars, hard to find now. Is event he Nissan available that Way? I am going to just get a early 2000's Echo with no AC or power steering. I like simplicity and less to maintain or repair. Plus they are like 1500 bucks..
Having owned a Yaris with the 5 speed, would not recommend that transmission because of the vague engagement point. The clutch is a drive by wire setup and after 5 years of ownership I still find myself over revving. The worst part is wearing boots or heavy shoes which will reduce the pedal feel and IMO can get dangerous if you're crossing an intersection. You don't want to stall in front of oncoming traffic in winter time LOL. To sum it up, the manual in a Yaris is dangerous unless you live in a dry climate and can drive with tennis shoes or flip flops.
Alex, people have routinely been getting 40 plus mpg with this 1NZFE engine and this 4 speed auto. Don't know how you managed to get 32. It's a proven engine transmission combo that is incredibly reliable and fuel efficient. The only minus for the 2015 Yaris is that it is no longer made in Japan but is made in France...
@@Oaktwn16 me as well, an '07 w auto, and ive NEVER gotten 32! I never even get 35. 39 seems to be the min, but routine is 40+. I dont know where he's getting those figures from unless perhaps he has a hole in his gas tank.
They're complaining about the cluth... but isn't all yaris from 2006 to present.. using a cable cluth instead of a hydrolic clutch?? A a cable cluth is more black and white with no grey zone, but more reliable and long lasting for the clutch!!
Re. the competition comments in the end, I found that Fit was just as good as Soul for interior room. Soul looks boxy, but it's an illusion, in my experience, or at least Fit is that good. I found Accent rather competitive (not mentioned by Alex).
Pete Zaitcev I agree that the Fit is very accommodating, but I was able to fit more in the soul. There is more room under the cargo load floor which helped out considerably. I had a Soul and a Fit on either ends of a family trip and the Soul handled the luggage with room to spare while the Fit was packed.
I love your videos, Alex. When you talk about prices, however, I wish you would at least acknowledge that MSRP is not equivalent to sales price--otherwise your comments can come across as misleading. You say, for example, that a comparable Versa Note or a Fiesta SFE will be more expensive than the Yaris. In the real world, that's not true; both the Versa Note and Fiesta routinely sell for at least $2000 under MSRP, while the Yaris sells much closer to its MSRP because it is so hard to find. That's my main problem with the Yaris: I like it, but it's overpriced.
While it is true at the moment that the Yaris sells closer to MSRP than the Note, only the 2014 Fiesta is selling below MSRP, the 2015 transactions appear much like the Yaris. I only ever use MSRP because the transaction prices are subject to change and nobody knows what things will be like in 6 months. One has to choose a rational comparison method and stick with it, MSRP without discount is the simplest way to do that. Also keep in mind that only 44% of shoppers haggle with dealers according to CNW Research. That means that the majority of customers look at the sticker price as *the* price. In general a car like the Yaris may sell close to MSRP at the start, but after we see the new Mazda2, the 2015 Fiesta selling in volume, the next generation 2016 Accent should launch in 2015, we will see the Yaris slip back to where it was in 2014. Keeping in mind that over half of sales go essentially at MSRP, and that transaction prices can fall like this after a year or two, you can see why I use MSRP on a video that will in theory live on the internet forever. It's not perfect, but you have to use a method that can stay consistent over time.
the Yaris is for size, not for MPG. that is why I bought 2012 Prius C. small size and highest MPG. can get 55MPG easily. oil change every 10000 miles. that is all.
J Chu I disagree completely. As you can imagine, a smaller car would be more fuel economical, but the Yaris is strange in that it doesn't even get the MPG that a larger Corolla gets. LE Eco trim gets 30/42. If they put a CVT in it instead of that antiquated 4A, then I'd definitely consider it.
+WuWei Xu 2007 to 2009 Yaris 1nzfe engine get about 45 to 50 mpg I have one an 07 and that's what I'm averaging the car is slow as hell tho that 4 speed auto is bullet proof
TheCobruhAlienat0r They're not in the same class, my friend, I don't think many buyers cross shop the Corolla and Camry, on the contrary, when they see the cost of a new Camry compared to a new Corolla, which is nearly as comfortable and roomy, they'll go for the smaller one. It;s not wonder Camry sales are down and Corolla are up.
The Infotainment System looks like it was ripped from Scions whey have this weird stigma of Being Hip and young while being affordable to own as well Though most models gets average or mediocre fuel economy as a turn off
If you decided to buy Yaris then buy it in manual trans. Four speed transmission is from 20 years ago WTF ? Manual transmission is OK, but this engine was first installed in Corolla 1994. This engine is very reliable but antiquated. They should have made a 6 speed trans for this engine since it has been 25 years !
Wrong again. The rear seats are on tracks so you can slide them forward to accommodate larger bags so you can latch the rear seats upright. You need to do your homework better.
Very good video again!! But beside it is cheap or a lot of city driving and good MPG, I don't see why people want to buy small small small car……..Perhaps they are cute? lol
Please stop using the word transmission so much. we know what the hell you are talking about when you just say "trans or manual/auto" it becomes tediou, thank you.
4 speed auto and 106hp, and doesn't even get 40mpg. Welcome to the year 2000. Why buy a Yaris when the established competitors offer much better already?
The design is a French design so you haters should reconsider before you call this car as ugly. Since you do it - call this car ugly- to despise Japanese design you would be insulting your falsely admired European designers and this is equal to insulting yourself. So, stop that idiotic remark ..... and I bet after learning this the car started to look like the best looking hatch in the world already. .............. LOL! observe how those remarks will vanish after this.
in Europe Peugeot and Citroen rule the small car world, they're designed for comfort and looks. the 208 blows the yaris away except in mileage, the 308 is a mini family car with a great interior. the French make beautiful cars, the Japanese make efficient and reliable ugly vehicles.
John W So, if a French designed Japanese car comes up then it is both beautiful and insanely reliable transport. Thank you for making it clear to us. BTW I am European I am well familiar with the European market. Italians and the Japanese make the best small cars it is simply because of the geography, they have big cities and limited land space to grow the cities. French self claim to be artistic but the best looking cars are designed by the Britishit small or big. Unfortunately, though, Including the German cars the least reliable cars in the market are European cars.
LOL! I love Aston Martins and the new Jags but they're a bit out of my range. My experience with the Citroen C5 and having lived in Europe for 10 years is where my comments came from. I also had a friend that worked for Citroen in Athens for a long time. When I came back to the States I found that Hyundai had invested a lot in research to be able to make Japanese-German and French interior cars so your comment is not just humorous, it's a fact. Their Genesis makes me feel richer than I am, but the large Citroens still give "softer" rides with their sophisticated suspensions. Look up C6 to understand the French concept of comfort. Cheers
I think Alex was striking a good balance, looking at cars that I could never afford between everyman's cars. I think the review of Fiesta SFE was infulential (despite the manual-only). Can't wait to see his review of Renegade. As far M/AMG/Vettes we've got Top Gear for that already. When Alex reviewed hachiroku, he did not say anything I didn't know already, so why bother?
This is a 2015 model and it still uses a 4 speed auto? REALLY TOYOTA?, REALLY? That is freaking pathetic, if it wasn't for the standard 7 inch display, this car will be consider outdated 10 years ago
I agree the 4-speed is an issue for me, but on the flip side the Yaris is all about a low sticker price so it makes sense. By going 4-speed they were able to jam the touchscreen LCD and bluetooth in the base model. The Yaris isn't about speed or fuel economy (as odd as that last one sounds), it is about low purchase price.
Omg! Never been a Toyota fan but wow is this an ugly ugly car! The new Camry is ugly in front as well..yards has always been nappy and slow..boy they so copied ford with that grill, looks like a focus/fiesta ST, but on those cars it works
"Omg! Never been a Toyota fan" As you confessed you are a hater, so why should you like a Toyota anyway? A hint; This Yaris is a French designed car ... now it started to look nicer right LOL! what an idiot.
Fussinated Who cares if its a French design? I don't really like French cars anyway. But I actually thinks this care looks a little better than the Honda Fit or most of the other sub compact hatches. However, I like the Honda Fit much better than this car for about every other reason than the looks.
***** "Who cares if its a French design?" People like you who would kiss European ass. "I don't really like French cars anyway" Of course, you do. The rumor is that the next Gen Mazda2 may be based on the Yaris, not the other way around.
Thank you, Alex. I am pleasantly surprised how well this Yaris has become and I enjoy your car reviews as always.
Interesting. I see no reason to just jump to a compact over this no? It makes more sense to me.
I think most people will drive out with a base Corolla L when they go check out this car, a lot more car for not a lot more dough.
If they were smart they'd get a 2013 or older Corolla of a higher trim with low miles for the same price of this as new or even cheaper.
But for some people, only new wheels will do!
