Great family of engines. Their are some key differences between them though and parts aren't interchangeable. One key reason why this engine is popular is it can access 90% of its torque at 1300Revs. The FSE has 30 bolts holding the crank and they designed it to run 12 injectors from factory. The thing these engines really need is to be sleeved or run a close deck. Sadly they don't have a lot of hype and thus limited aftermarket support but the potential is available.
@@yukonstriker1703 No engines come from factory as a closed deck. You'd need to hit up a performance shop. But really unless you were trying to hit over 600 whp then I don't see the point. Didnt tell me what I needed to know. There are so many generations and variants to the 2gr-fe engines. People like me have issues finding replacements. For instance I have LKQ telling me a 2011 engine from a sienna will not work with a 2007 sienna. Why? whats the reasons? isn't all the 2GR-fe longblocks identical or did they cast them differently according to generation?
I have a 2008 Lexus RX350 with this engine and Lexus recommends using Premium gas… any idea why that would be and for this engine is it really necessary or is Lexus just wanting me to get more HP out of the engine?
That’s just how they have it tuned for power and fuel economy. You might be able to get away with 89 but only if you plan on not pushing it hard and go easy on the throttle. But if you have a loaded car or plan on doing a lot of highway driving or drive a little aggressively than I would definitely use the better gas, you should anyway but that’s the basics of it.
FXE short block and 4 intake cams, FE heads and timing cover. To achieve the Atkinson cycle Toyota does 2 things. #1. High compression, as stated. #2. They use a higher lift/long duration intake cam and retard it’s position by about 20 degrees or one tooth.
From all those engines which one is the best?? I really want to do one. I've been having money. But now that Toyota is bringing back the MR2 and Celica i funny know what to do. I do b like my Corolla but if I want to compete I need to b know what engine is the best from all those applications.
My daughter has a 2010 Lexus RX 350 with a 2GR-FE and it developed a problem with the duel vvti system and a mechanic said it would cost $4000 to fix it or we could just unplug the vvti and it would run fine but would not have eco-mode. Soon i'll be changing the gasket and seal set. I bought my harrier 350g(rx350) bj2007 last year and the engine is now 15 years old 😁 still pulls hard though and no smoke outta the exhaust either
I like the 2GR more then 2JZ, sure it can't handle crazy boost but its like 1/2 the weight and only thing it lacks is performance parts. Been some headway there but nothing like older famous Toyota engines (2JZ, 4AG) or anything Honda.
Could you please verify if 2GR-FKS has still aluminum block with steel sleeves as cylinder liners or they already use PWTA - Plasma Wire Transfer Arching for cylinder cavity coating? There is a trend most automotive manufacturers are switching for the latter to sheer off a couple of pounds per block. I can not find this info anywhere. I would greatly appreciate. Thank you.
For a motorsport and handling standpoint you shouldn't be kidding when you say the 2gr (particularly the 2gr-fse) is the better than the 2jz... It is the successor to the 2jz replacing it in applications where previously the 1/2jz would be used, being v6 sitting further back in the engine bay as well as being built from aluminium for the head and block the weight distribution is better than the stock JZs

I researched for ages and searched for almost 2 years for a minty clean is350/gs350. I entered every car into the Lexus driver website using their VIN to look up dealer service history. What I found (and saved me from buying) was that the 07-08 (possibly 09) were the oil burners. I must've looked at the history of 20 cars and was close to buying two when I read they were taken in for oil consumption issues. If I recall there was 5-6 cars out of the 20 that were taken to the dealer. After that I read on clublexus that they changed oil control rings on the 09 or 10. I ended up buying a 2010 that hasn't used any oil yet, and I've beat on it. some guys is/gs burn a quart every 500 miles!
Interesting that they went with a 83mm stroke Vs the 4 litre's 96mm stoke. Imagine the torque... I wonder why they made the 2GR-FE.... so oversquare???
it would probably feel a lot more planted with sticky tires, lowering springs and sway bars. but if you really want to experience 2gr-fse fun, buy a rear wheel drive 2006-13 Lexus is350 with 306hp and turn off stability and traction control. I've drifted mine around some corners and had stupid fun in a wet open parking lot. It will also rip to 60mph in a high 4 second range, matching or beating much sportier and more powerful cars from stoplight to stoplight.
Is there any difference parts or repair methods/mauals between the FE vs. FSE versions? I currently have an FSE version out of a Lexus gs350 which I need to change con rod bearings. Can you make a video over the internals of each engine. I have been struggling to find information on the variants. I have a 2GR FSE waiting for boost.
do u have any uodates on mods
What is the difference between the 2GR-FKS in the Tacoma vs the highlander?
I know one is sitting longitudinal and one transverse setup but other than that is it the same engine? I’m trying to figure out if the Magnuson supercharger for the Tacoma will work in the highlander.
What about old cars? Like the Toyota Corolla TE70 coupe etc etc etc
Ive seen plenty swaps but rarely any turbo kits applied to it
Im pretty new to the 2gr in terms of how it operates so tell me: why doesnt anyone turbo these things?
Just turned 16 and I got a 2020 Tacoma, idk if it’s because it’s my first car or what but I love it.runs really good and I’ll prob still have it when I’m 25😭🙏
2GR-FSE is in my 2nd gen IS350
Yes
I'm late to the party, but I worked on one of the 2gr blocklines. We were the CNC machining line. I got some horror stories about that line and the machines, lol. Straight PTSD (joke).
I'm now on the 2.4T Block machining line.
Awesome video!
Where can I get the list of components the 2GR-FE motor have?
2GR FKS is in the IS300 awd as well.
hmm according to this my 06 Lexus is350 doesnt have the 2grfse but I have heard and read from a few places my 06 Lexus IS350 does have the 2grfse.
maybe this video is talking about gen3+ lexus toy engines?
I've been really shocked at times driving my '12 Venza. Ltd has AWD and is hard to keep from jumping off the stop light, great car and engine!
I have a 24 Is350. Is it a bad idea for reliability to throwing a super charger on it? Would be nice to have if it didn't destroy the engine. Not sure what everything else can take. Thanks
2is generation of the is350 has the FSE
Got the Basic 2GRFE..
I'm from Australia and I have a stanced out is350 I have owned since new. I wouldn't mind looking into boosting the car. Could you send me links or offer any suggestions to increase performance?
Didnt tell me what I needed to know. There are so many generations and variants to the 2gr-fe engines. People like me have issues finding replacements. For instance I have LKQ telling me a 2011 engine from a sienna will not work with a 2007 sienna. Why? whats the reasons? isn't all the 2GR-fe longblocks identical or did they cast them differently according to generation?
planning a 2gr swap into my 9th gen corolla
TRD Aurion didn't have TRD built supercharger. Was first production vehicle to use new Eaton TVS supercharger. 320hp/240kw & 400nm/295 lb ft
2gr-FSE '14 Lexus 1s350- 306 HP 233KW.
@@Smart-Skippy And how many years newer? Sit down
How can you supercharge the fks on Highlander? They said there isn't enough space for a charger kit in the hood
Reliable engine. My mom's 2007 es350 still performs well.
Oh and your cam trigger will be off, as a result. So you may need a piggyback to control the engine if your tuner can’t tweak the stock ecu
If I wanted to put a bigger engine in my 05avalon Wat would it be 🤔 please help
From all those engines which one is the best?? I really want to do one. I've been having money. But now that Toyota is bringing back the MR2 and Celica i funny know what to do. I do b like my Corolla but if I want to compete I need to b know what engine is the best from all those applications.
What about the oil weights throughout those engines?
I have a 2019 tacoma requiring 0W-20.
Change it earlier
Or go with
0W30-5W30
Would like to see the 1gr series.
Ok so if all the 2GR engines, which is the most looked around variant??
love the video, also if you can advise on the best way to modify a Toyota Mark x I'll appreciate that alot
My daughter has a 2010 Lexus RX 350 with a 2GR-FE and it developed a problem with the duel vvti system and a mechanic said it would cost $4000 to fix it or we could just unplug the vvti and it would run fine but would not have eco-mode. Could you please do a video explaining the vvti system and possible repair solutions?
just unplug it dude lmao fuck eco mode.
2gr is the best and my favorite 🥰❤️
So which one is best for boost?
Could you please verify if 2GR-FKS has still aluminum block with steel sleeves as cylinder liners or they already use PWTA - Plasma Wire Transfer Arching for cylinder cavity coating? There is a trend most automotive manufacturers are switching for the latter to sheer off a couple of pounds per block. I can not find this info anywhere. I would greatly appreciate. Thank you.
I do believe the FKS is PWTA
All 2GR-FE engines are the same? Interchangeable? I can install a RAV4 engine into an Avalon?
For a motorsport and handling standpoint you shouldn't be kidding when you say the 2gr (particularly the 2gr-fse) is the better than the 2jz...
It is the successor to the 2jz replacing it in applications where previously the 1/2jz would be used, being v6 sitting further back in the engine bay as well as being built from aluminium for the head and block the weight distribution is better than the stock JZs
It doesn't have the power potential of the JZ. The JZ is a MUCH stronger motor internally.
@@mrvwbug4423 but given that the 2JZ weighs almost 2x as much, in light cars, the gain in performance via its more robust design is measured
Our 2012 Sienna must be a lemon cause the 2GRFE lifters are knocking at 170k miles. Very unhappy! Any ideas if you can swap without pulling motor?
Probably piston slap. Does it quite down after warm up? Mine has been sounding like shit when cold for 25,000 miles. No issues.
That knocking noise it’s completely normal in 2gr-fe engines specially when weather is cold
@@erickgomez1798 This knocking was not normal and was in fact a bad lifter. We needed up selling the vehicle due to the annoying high level of sound it made.
@@farnsnoble6645 I think you're just inventing problems.
@@piggy310 You are free to think however you’d like. The Toyota dealer is who diagnosed the bad lifters. So perhaps they also are “making up” a sound… if you are mechanically inclined you can tell when the noise is coming from the top end of a motor. In my case rear bank exhaust side valve lifter.
Hi
Is the 2016 Toyota Highlander 3.5 fe engine the same as the 2010 Toyota Venza 3.5 engine??
Great video brother, does the 2gr-fse engines has any history problems like valve stem seals or valve guide or pistons wall let oil passes thru it or ignition coils worn out within 20-30k !!? My 08 Lexus gs350 do give me a white puff smoke upon starting up after the car driven and engine is warmed and smoke lasts for 3-4sec and it doesn’t happen all the time but I notice it does happen when I park the car trunk parked on an incline surface !!? Any help would be appreciated
just usually carbon build up and or oil burning totally normal with these cars I have an 07 gs350 bought VP racing octane booster and some royal purple fuel injector cleaners after a fuel treatment from valvoline and cleaned all gunk and shes getting plenty of mpg and no more smoke
would recommend throttle body clean too
I researched for ages and searched for almost 2 years for a minty clean is350/gs350.
Hi guys Lexus IS350 2013 - 2016 What toyota uses the same engine, and what engine is it. Thanks
Can I swap the crank on a 2gr fe to a 2gr- fst
Interesting that they went with a 83mm stroke Vs the 4 litre's 96mm stoke. Imagine the torque... I wonder why they made the 2GR-FE.... so oversquare???
Please my car is a sienna with 2gr but the issues is that it delays to come on... Delayed starting please can anyone help me up..
Great video, great info, thanks!
What year car model should I source my 2G-FE from for my 1992 Toyota MR2 swap, most compatible direct fit?
Thanks for affirming that my 07 Camry XLE V6 is hella fun until you feel the “boat” feeling in corners lol
it would probably feel a lot more planted with sticky tires, lowering springs and sway bars. but if you really want to experience 2gr-fse fun, buy a rear wheel drive 2006-13 Lexus is350 with 306hp and turn off stability and traction control. I've drifted mine around some corners and had stupid fun in a wet open parking lot. It will also rip to 60mph in a high 4 second range, matching or beating much sportier and more powerful cars from stoplight to stoplight.
I have a 2011 Toyota Avalon with the 2grfe engine I heard these engine have forged piston is this true in all of the 2grfe included the Avalon
don’t forget the Lexus RC 300 that uses the 2GR-FSE
With approx 50 less HP. Not sure why they even made that car, the 350 has the least amount of power I'd want in a 4k lb car.
I have the fse in my IS350. It can definitely pull hard
Nice! Anything done to your IS?

Is there any difference parts or repair methods/mauals between the FE vs. FSE versions? I currently have an FSE version out of a Lexus gs350 which I need to change con rod bearings. Repair info on FSE models seems difficult to come by online. Is FSE simply the same bottom end/repair process as the FE version ?
i wish the 5sfe head had more support. not as restrictive as people think. modular too
5SFE was known for sludging if using conventional oil.
@@GameArmorGameplay yeah if you pushing it and you run it summer and winter lol. only bearings are quite weak, piston rings.
@@ItsPainnz You're correct. I should have never pushed my 5SFE 4-banger that hard on dino oil lol. But I'm very satisfied with my 2GR using Mobil 1 or Castrol Edge 😎
I have the 2GR-FSE in my Lexus RC 350. Love it ! ! ! 👌👌👍👍
(AND I don't know, or give 2 sheites, what Scotty thinks....)
What year is it and have you had any issues yet? I have a 2015 I just got with 28k miles and just read about the 5th cylinder scuffing issue, which essentially scraps the engine, and now I'm worried.
@@Pygmara HI - 2015 with 53,000 miles. No issues with mine. I make sure the oil and filter are changed no more than 4,000 miles and twice a year. I use a high quality snythetic - Castrol, Mobil 1 or Penzoil Ultra. I usually have the dealer change it at a six month mark and I change it myself six months after that. I NEVER beat on my cars and make sure to drive conservatively until it warms up. I'll be changing the coolant in the spring. I wouldn't be concerned as long as you take care of it and do preventative maintenance. I have a 2003 4 cylinder Camry. (20 years Jan 2). There are reports the engine has problems, but NEVER had a problem with mine- Again, constant maintenance and drive conservatively. 😊😊👍👍
@@billiebobbienorton2556 that's good to hear you have no issues. I'll be maintaining mine similar, as I take care of my belongings. However, I've only driven 2k miles (26k bought) and noticed my drive belt was half shredded. I'm hoping this isn't why the previous owner sold it, there seems to be a little wear on the tensioner pulley bolt you use to decompress the belt, so 🤷♂️
Fingers crossed I didn't get a lemon, I really do enjoy the car so far and look forward to driving it for years..
@@Pygmara Sorry to hear about the drive belt issue. Maybe at worst, the tensioner pully would need replacement (?) Good luck and enjoy your ride. Reach out to me if you ever want to chat 😊😊
@@billiebobbienorton2556 no extra noise, only took approx 10 mins to replace, very easy. Seems to be just an old belt I caught just in time. I'll keep an eye on it but seems fine.
One other thing, what rpm do you idle at at start? I'm around 1.5k for a min then when kind of warm it only drops to 1k rpm. Is this normal for the 2gr-fse 3.5l v6 in the rc?
need a bit help over here, actually im building an mazda rx8 and decided to put 2GR in it becuse i like its sound, but after looking at its variants im confused which would suit the rx8 best, please can anyone advise, thanks

There was no Supra back then...
Sorry but that award goes to the Toyota Blade Master, lightest car made by Toyota to house the 2GR-FE, unfortunately only FWD though!
my 06 is350 is still pretty quick imo :) so prob one of the quickest toyota/lexus.
