I love the 4Runner. One of the few affordable SUVs still built on a bonafide truck frame, not on a lame ass front wheel drive crossover frame. And still Japanese built. The Tahara Plant is one of those factories where the workers start the day off with physical exercises to get everyone motivated. They've definitely got their shit together over there.

Neat video, I knew the USDM 4Runner was made in Japan. What I didn't know is that its made in the same plant/assembly line as the big daddy $85,000 200 series Land Cruiser. The Land Cruiser 200 is Toyota's flagship, their best made, most durable truck they make, designed for a 500,000 mile/20 year lifespan. Glad to know that the same people screw together your $40,000 4Runner. Also this plant should undergo a HUGE retooling late this year or next year. New king daddy Land Cruiser is coming. Kind of wondering if we will get a new Prado/Lexus GX and 4Runner at the same time(Prado/Lexus GX is the same truck, 4 Runner is the same platform but smaller)

I've seen how Toyotas are abused overseas in developing countries and they just keep working with minimal maintenance. Toyotas and Lexus' Stateside are pampered compared to how they are driven overseas. Thank You for this video! Maybe a US tour of Indiana and Texas plants would be in order?
awesome and very interesting, that was interesting to learn that every lexus gets test driven but only 1 in 5 toyotas get test driven. its still better than other than other manufacturing plants lol
One of the major selling points for me when I was buying a 4Runner was that it was made in Japan. I've had too much trouble with vehicles produced in the US and Mexico. Our automotive industry, in my opinion, has gotten too lax. You look at our assembly lines, and they're full of out-of-shape people with unkempt appearances, wearing various different outfits. I know it might sound authoritarian, but I think that that lack of uniformity, lack of grooming standards, etc.. is what fosters a culture of shoddy workmanship in our production facilities. If we implemented required uniforms, required grooming standards, and fostered a culture of precision and professionalism within our assembly plants, we could rival the Germans and Japanese in build quality. But we won't.
I'm thinking about buying a Lexus IS (3rd gen, or 4th gen) and it's made at the Tahara plant! If I do, I hope to visit this plant one day for a tour and see how the cars are made. I could literally spend all day in such a plant and never get bored.
@@Pickuptrucktalk Yeah, I plan to visit Japan for at least a week so I don't feel like I have to be rushed to go everywhere. Do you just contact the plant via email or something to let them know you are interested in a tour?

@4:10, the models produced at this site are 4Runners, LandCruiser Prado, GX460 & LandCruiser. The fact that these vehicles are manufactured at the same location, does this means these 4 vehicles share the same fundamental structure (aka, same platform) and key body components? When I googled, the world renounced LandCruiser Prado is not sold in US. But here, we have GX460 instead. And Lexus GX460 is in fact Toyota LandCruiser Prado. Is this true? Does it also mean 4Runner is also related to LandCruiser Prado? I am interested in the AWD aspect (and the transfer case) of these vehicles. It is also interesting to know the last model update of 4Runner, LandCruiser & GX460 were way back in 2008(?) and rumor has it, they all are going to have a mild model refresh in 2021(2022?). This leads me to think these vehicles are all the same other than the sheet metal and shapes.

4 Runner shares the same frame as Land-cruiser Prado 150 and GX 460. All are well made and extremely reliable. If you notice the rear door on the GX even opens from the drivers side instead of passenger side. Prado was deigned for Asia/Europe market and is a right hand drive model.

Very dissatisfied with my 2016 4runner Limited 4wd. Both front bumper brackets are broken. Uneven front tire wear from side to side. Differential clunk when putting in drive. Rusting underneath already at 31k miles. Transmission slips going uphill. This vehicle has never been used to tow or been off road. Toyota is not what is used to be
I've heard that this gen 4Runner was cheapened alot. We had a 2003 that was much better than present gen. Better materials and decent overall construction, altho the spare-tire carrier stuff underneath rotted out. Never liked the ride quality, too bouncy for me. But the thing was a tank and was running strong when traded at 150k miles.
Since this video is most up-to-dated, the rumor about the redesigned 2020 4Runner that might come out this fall of 2019 is now NOT REAL. They are still working on the existing 4Runners in production. Can't wait any longer, might go for Mazda CX-9 instead.
If you're cross-shopping the Toyota 4Runner and CX9 for a family cross-over then obviously the CX9 is the better vehicle... but the issue is these vehicles aren't really meant to be cross-shopped. The CX9 competitor that Toyota has is more comparable to the Highlander or even the RX350L depending on what trim you get on the CX9. The 4Runner is meant to be a body-on-frame vehicle and NOT a crossover... That's why it sells so well because its' modern but classic regarding how it handles and its' underpinnings.
Bobby is spot on. There isn’t that much of a true competitor anymore for the 4Runner in terms of seating, cargo room and capability. A four-door Wrangler is about as close as there is and probably the new Ford Bronco will be a competitor but that remains to be seen.
Pickup Truck Plus SUV Talk Exactly... I mean really I don’t see many competitors at all besides Toyota themselves. Although all pretty different vehicles, the Sequoia, Land Cruiser, Lexus GX and LX are all kind of in their own realm. Besides maybe something like Range Rover and the G-Wagon but then again, those don’t really compare. Either way, I like what Toyota is doing to their Trucks/SUVs and I really hope the next generation of these will still be body-on-frame but we will see!
Bobby Tran did you check out my interview with Toyota truck chief Mike Sweers? It is long but very interesting: Toyota's Tundra, 4Runner, Sequoia, Tacoma Chief, Interview from Japan ruclips.net/video/YppBqPCbwqc/видео.html

I was asking so maybe you could provide a real answer such as I have a speech impediment, and I could be more understanding. Nope, just a snarky nonsense comment.
To those in Japan who read these comments. I just watched a history of TOYOTA. It was all a lie. I'm the truck designer who per SOLD 90.000.000 dollars in trucks. They were called toy, truck, all American car makers refused to build my truck. 1500 pounds, 4 cylinder, no safety steal. Large wide tires. 2 seats , no real dash, cheap aluminum shell with bench seats in the truck bed. That was 1968. I bought CROWN motors from the emperor of Japan family. And renamed it TOYOTA toy oil truck Arabia. All Toyota trucks were per SOLD to the king of Saudi Arabia. Why, they were cheap, they didn't sink in the sand dunes. The oil fields back then had no roads. Just sand, Ford trucks, loaded with oil workers sank in the sand. Each min down time at the oil rigs. Cost millions. My 1500 pound , cheap truck was designed for one thing. To get oil workers to work in the sands of Saudi Arabia. And yes I designed Toyota city. And I also, I'm Honda. Honda son, who died in 1993, my echie bon, tomodichie. From 1967.. u know little of the truth..
My Jeep was built in Ohio ... I’m good. Toyota keeps pushing the same tired tech & relies on reliability stereotypes. 4Runner is a fugly design & underpowered.
I love my 2020 4runner OFF ROAD PREMIUM. Only thing that Toyota should change is the stock lights and the rear ac. Use HID lights and ac vents above or side of rear windows. My dog spends most of it's time in the back and in AZ it can get to 120 degrees. That rear seat when down blocks the ac vent.
Don't forget to check out our interview with Toyota truck's chief engineer Mike Sweers from Japan as well. ruclips.net/video/YppBqPCbwqc/видео.html

Question, if japan had a nuclear meltdown how radioactive are the products coming from there.
This is why I only buy a Toyota or lexus built in Japan.
4runner IS a land cruiser padro from the frame down.
One tsunami and say goodbye to 4Runner production
I love my 2007 4Runner (125k) but I'm not buy another one - v6.
Why these cars doesn't sell in Japan?
Way too big. Japan has small roads.
@@Pickuptrucktalk There are some car dealers in Japan that sell big Japanese cars.
DuranGan you are correct. I saw them when I was outside if Tokyo. No idea where people actually drive them in Japan.
@@Pickuptrucktalk but not officially
its about pride in what your doing and owning your craft. Americans have egos that outweigh this pride.
Lets travel to japan to show a slide show, and take a video of the train ride.
6:41 Toyota 4Runner TRD PRO FACTORY???
I don’t know. Probably. All TRD Pros come from the factory.
@@Pickuptrucktalk that's was really loved that for Toyota 4Runner TRD PRO
Ike N what else do you say? 😂
I'm going to buy the 4 runner, can you help with some discounts?
Sorry, I can’t do anything for you on that. I don’t work for Toyota.
Hey, that’s my trucks birthplace!
This is why I won’t buy a vehicle made or assembled in the US. They will never match the workmanship of the Japanese force.
Every Japan car I want to drive must be made in Japan for more quality and no problems at all I want cars made in Japan and no other country
where the GETs are born
I wish you could tell them to make a 4runner one that doesn't burn so much gas or electric from a 94 4runner💖 owner that won't buy/part till they burn less.
If American make Toyota anyone know where the parts are made? Japan or US?
Most parts are from Mexico.
Pickup Truck Plus SUV Talk than I think I’ve been driving fake Corolla😅
Made in Japan, Not selling in Japan
Yep.
Atleast not american made.... Original japanese...
If american, all fak up
I've noticed that America only really makes good guns lol. Which I love since I love guns but I'd rather buy a tundra/tacoma made in Japan than in America or Mexico. Happy that my 07 4runner was made in Japan.
The head of Honda admitted the Americans are the best at coming up with original ideas and Japanese try to make it better.
firebir11 the problem in america is the workers, they are not dedicated enough
Scotty kilmer joins the chat
He did what?
@@Pickuptrucktalk it's a meme 😂
OH. LOL. You know, before I started this channel and the 8 years I’ve been a journalist, I’ve never heard of Kilmer. Now, I hear of him all the time. Kind of crazy.
No DEI hires in Japan
I have a 2002 Tacoma, my son has a 2000 4Runner. If Toyota is good enough for ISIS, good enough for us.
what on earth?
@@criticalricetheory I know, I'm jealous.
Why can't you finish one word before starting another?
Why can’t you listen faster??
@@Pickuptrucktalk
I'm sorry, I wasn't clear. You don't finish words, you just sputter the beginning of words, so the speed at which I listen cannot fix that. I was asking so maybe you could provide a real answer such as I have a speech impediment, and I could be more understanding. Nope, just a snarky nonsense comment.
JLew Miscommunication then. I’ve been working on slowing down my speech. My bad. Have a great night.
The place is ripe for a sunami.
And muricans will pay 10k markups for these cars
4 Toyota 4runner landcruiser making machine I need every monthly send me farm veng district let go
Superior quality. Our 2008 Lexus GX 470 was made in Tahara. Looks and drives like new with 190,000 miles.
Man this cat talks fast. 17 words all jumbled at one time
Damn guy!
Wtf!
My Jeep was built in Ohio ... I’m good. Toyota keeps pushing the same tired tech & relies on reliability stereotypes. 4Runner is a fugly design & underpowered.
You might want to go check your frame welds while you're at it...
But yet you're watching this! Sucka🤣
