    I bought an H6R last year they certainly attract a lot of attention ;
    especially when you drop the rear wheel at a cashier.
    I owned a 1948 Indian Chief and this thing attracts as
    much attention as it ever did. Very Cool bike.

    Very good insights. The only reason I bought my Brompton was because a friend of mine wasn’t using it and sold it to me for a fantastically good price. Before that I used to feel resentful and annoyed even thinking about their high purchase cost. Now after a year of cycling regularly for the first time in 30 years I would buy one (even a new one) at the drop of a hat, even if it meant getting a loan: they are that good! A year on I’m much fitter from owning one , am saving money on public transport and they are so enjoyable to cycle on: fast off the line, manoeuvrable, comfortable, great for carrying stuff with the front bag and like you said being able to take them indoors and their compactness when folded gives them a huge advantage over other bikes.

    Great video!
    I too hesitated for a long time (several years) before getting a Brompton. I have owned one now for 5 months, and it has exceeded my expectations in almost every area. Yes it is fun. Yes it brings a smile. Yes it is comfortable. And yes it is fast enough. I use it more than I could have imagined (currently around 120 miles a week), the fun and utility is so accessible. I wanted a Brompton for the triple fold compactness, having been impressed by these little marvels being used by train commuters on my way into London each day. An addictive bike, definitely. Better protection of the gear/changer mechanisms from road dirt is the only thing I feel should be improved.

    Yes and yes! Some time ago I bought used 2007 brompton and I love it from the first minute. I rode it about 20 miles first day, two times in undeground and 1 time by train same day. And it was so seamless, hassle-free. Second - ride quality. I didn't expect hole bike to be so stiff, same time comfortable and geometry-wise feeling like big bike. Before buy it looked like made of compromises, but after using it - it's the opposite - it has no compromises for me at all.

    My only reason for hesitating is that the model I want is very expensive!

      Beg, borrow or steal to get one!.... well maybe not the latter. 😉 I don’t think you’ll regret it! When I think about the money people spend on cars: purchasing them, servicing, insurance, fuel, depreciation etc the price of a Brompton and the amazing sense of freedom you get from owning one makes the relatively high initial cost worth it imo.

      @@jacc88888 Errr ............ Brompton's are very nickable. My first Brompton was stolen. I wasn't on it at the time. Comparing a Brompton with other bicycles is a better example than with a car. Compare like with like. Compared to other "quality" bikes they are still very good value.

    Hi, I just discovered your channel. I purchased a Brompton about a month ago.
    After becoming tired of escalating fuel costs here in the UK. I travel around different schools teaching guitar and the Brompton has been brilliant. My van is now only used for band rehearsals and gigs and one school that has the biggest hill ever to climb, although that may change when I get a Swytch kit. The Brompton is brilliant. Rucksack bag locks onto the front, folding guitar on my back and I’m good to go. I just fold it up and take it into the schools with me. I’ve really enjoyed cycling everywhere again. Good for my health and good for the environment. Great collection of videos on your channel. I’ve subscribed. 👍 Bye for now.

    Hi Brian I got my brompton a year ago and my other 2 folding bikes crumpled like tin cans. My brompton rides like a tank and never any problems. I got an older brompton and I finally have my shipments coming for the titanium triple layer shock and seat clamp so it doesn’t fold when I pick it up. I love my Brompton so much. I was lucky, I went to the Brompton store in London and tried out the three sizes. I won't got the H type for a more upright ride, better for my back.
    I have the superlight and ordered a pack of titanium parts from China. Also using MKS ezy compact pedals.
    It is great to stow as well. I keep in the boot (trunk) of my car

    • @ibikeunfolded
      @ibikeunfolded  4 года назад

      The titanium is nice, but I carry so much on my back that it would not make sense for me to make my Brompton lighter. Maybe I will get another one to make those modifications.

      Like you, I intend to buy titanium parts and have actually already bought the J&L Titanium Handlebars, which are beautifully made.
      Replacement titanium bolts, nuts and washers together with seatpost, rear carrier rack, axles, pedals and rear triangle bearing are also on my list.
      The less weight to carry, the happier I'll be!

      Felix Cat I took off the handlebars from my h-type that they are so light already that I'll be leaving them as stock. The steal bolts to Ti ones are a great upgrade as the steal ones not only are heavy but for me, moreover they rust.

    • @alexmorgan3435

      Just a word of warning. If your car was ever broken into or stolen and your Brompton went with it, it is highly unlikely your car insurance would cover the cost of replacement unless you had other insurance to cover it which might not cover it if they discovered it was your normal place of storing it. My first Brompton was stolen outside the HQ of London University in Malet Street. Then about 10 years ago my car was broken into and tools stolen but they left my Brompton!!!!! I was so relieved. I lost a couple of hundred pounds in tools but I was so pleased I didn't lose my Brompton for the second time. Now it is either inside my house or once outside it never leaves my sight, ever.

    I was riding my brand New Brompton when the wheel keeping my chain under tension went flying by me. Luckily I found the wheel. That make me think if that would happen in some country where I would not ne able to buy locally.
    Another issue is if I expect a headwind, IT would slow me more than the usual average 2 km/h compare to m'y road bike. I fond m'y Bompton is harder on my knees.
    On the upside, my downgraded 6 gear bike, allows me to do the same hill circuit that I do with my road bike. Even when loaded it remains stable going downhill.
    The ride is really enjoyable.

    • @ibikeunfolded
      @ibikeunfolded  4 года назад

      I notice I ride through the wind much easier on my Brompton than on my regular road bike.... maybe because it’s lower to the ground, or maybe because there is less metal underneath... living in an area with high winds, it nice to cut through easier.🙂👍

    Great videos Brian. really help me with my purchase
    I hesitated to get one as well, I don't commute with bike and it is just for leisure, I need a really small folding bike purely because of these 4 reason
    - I live in an apartment, not really much space available for normal size bike
    - I think it is dangerous to ride bike on main road here so I need a bike that can fit into my car and go to suitable places to ride.
    - don't want to park it outside ( live in middle east with dust & extreme heat)
    - fit inside 31inch check in luggage.
    After years living here without a bike .few days ago I finally bought my first brompton, the best decision. it is really fun to ride.

    I have a second-hand Brompton, and the thing that I love is that it looks like it shouldn't carry more than a 150 lb racing snake of a rider, but somehow (personally I credit materials science and outright sorcery) it deals with my 300lb carcass as a commuting bike, as a shopping bike with a bunch of stuff in the front basket, and I'm planning on taking it touring once CoVid-19 has faded to a point where hotels are sensible again. I might even try near-town bikepacking, since I have some pretty light camping kit.

      @WitchKing 6, but I've also got a hand-me-down 3-speed that I'm working on getting back into roadworthy condition - if there's too much of a jump between gears there, I may look at giving that bike an aftermarket 8-speed Sturmey Archer conversion. Note that I'm in a pretty flat area (Ely, in eastern England.)

    I have 4 bikes, one is a Brompton, my newest purchased bike, its a 6 speed - blue and I got it via the cycle to work scheme here in the UK. I got it for less than £1000, normally these are about £1200 for a 6 speed a steal really so I am not complaining about that. Its strange to use as the position is a bit like you are perched on it rather then as "Part" of it (compared to my other bikes, road, mountain and a classic Marin from 93) I cannot fault the design, the convenience of it in use for what it is. My only bug bear is the twitch I get from the road surface to the handle bars, it seems I am constantly having to unconsciously correct it all the time, the gearing is a bit too, well off-ish, I like to ride smooth, fast and constantly, but riding like that has cause me to crash due to sudden twitch I got, so I now just cruse along without effort, has anyone noticed the twitch? May be the tyres? or something else, I'll have to investigate. But for the daily commute, public transport trains, buses, hoping off and on its great and easy. ~trooper

    • @ibikeunfolded
      @ibikeunfolded  4 года назад

      Yes it does twitch in certain road conditions. I have to keep both hands on the handle bars and watch what it run over so I don’t crash. Becomes like second nature after a while.

    This "type" of bike is good for around town because you can bring it in with you and it won't get stolen or vandalized. I does ride pretty much like a regular bike, not like a kid's bike.
    For me, the geometry on my high handlebars model does not allow me to go too far. As with any bike, warranty issues can be a hassle and I experienced this. There are cheaper knock offs available, but not much cheaper.

    The only reason people hesitate to buy a Brompton is price, but it is not expensive for what it offers. It delivers 100% on what a folding bike should do. There are lots of other cheaper folding bikes on the market, but they are rubbish in comparison to the Brompton. I rode of a few of them. When I first saw the Brompton I was intrigued. Shortly after I purposely went to see one in a bike shop and test rode it. I was hooked. I bought it. This was back in 2004 an M6L. I then bought another in 2006 when the first one was stolen. The fold is the work of genius. No other folding bike folds so compactly nor so quickly. All the oily bits are concealed within the bike as it folds. It fits in the back of most cars and in most spaces on public transport like trains. If not you can generally have it next to you. I used to tour on mine. I have ridden many of the high mountain cols of the French Pyrenees on mine. I have been on the Eurostar and French TGV with it in First Class without a single problem. I would never sell mine. It is just a brilliant design. The only way for me to part with it is if I die or my current one is stolen, again. Never ever leave it locked up outside unattended. I won't make that mistake again.

    As much as I like the ingenious folding-system, and the way you can use this bike in subways and buses - not just for transportation in the trunk of a car - I must admit that there are areas there Brompton have fallen behind. Like the gear-system, with basically is 1970/80:s design. You can talk all you like about " tried-and-tested" technology - I would prefer the Bosch-system with seamless gear-shifting and belt-drive. Even if it meant some added weight I would prefer it. It just smoother and not so clunky.

Longest ride on it has been about 35 km. Long enough to prove that folding bikes can be more than just city bikes. I ride gravel farm roads on it as well as long rides into the city. I truly believe folding bicycles can help save the planet. Anyway, I am an international teacher in Kosovo, and you're right, traveling with a bicycle is a priority, but it is stressful everytime I do it. Getting ready to move again from Kosovo back to New Mexico and then will return to Europe in August. I will probably leave the Coconino in New Mexico and may choose to travel with my Litespeed (S&S coupler retrofit by Stephen Bilenky) again, or thinking of a Zizzo Liberte' folder (based on your review). Going to Moldova where there are plenty of low-traffic roads outside of Chisinau. The Litespeed (a 2000 Toccoa mtn bike w/Salsa Moto fork) is nice (this summer it is getting new parts...its third configuration since getting the bike in 2006. I am upgraded it to a 1x10 drivetrain), but it is still somewhat a pain in the butt to take it apart and put it together...definitely not a real folding bike. Keep up the good content. You have a new subscriber!

      Jason Clarke Hi, Pedal Cycles in Ferndown is a premium dealer. If you want to try before you buy, if you make an appointment you can borrow a demo bike. I’ve had three Brompton so far, the current one is a 6-speed electric. Top tip; the more expensive models are a better buy as they normally have a better resale potential. I sold my previous models for almost what I paid for them. Don’t go cheap!!!!

      @@davidburgess5419 Thanks for the advice, what sort of money do you think it would cost for a 6 speed with mud guards and rack with the wheels on, I have tried looking on line but the prices seem to differ so much depending on what website I'm looking at, thanks for letting me know about Ferndown.

      Jason Clarke I’ve just looked on the Brompton website and the desirable M6L-X (=Titanium) without a rack (easily retro-fitted) is around £1800. If this looks expensive, consider buying it on 12/24 months interest free credit. This is the best way to buy, I do it regularly, as after your contract ends you will posses a bike worth probably what you originally paid for it :-)

    Brompton is as good as it gets in folding bikes. I've talked to some owners here in Belfast and they agree with me. Only one of our local cycle shops stocks the Brompton and they have been out of stock for weeks now. The foldability is a huge plus. The bike can be taken upstairs and put in a cupboard out of sight. The commuting office worker can store it under their desk. I couldn't do that with my first bike.

    I'm 6' 4" tall 220 lbs which makes me a 99 percentile person ; this is just a fancy
    word that means I am bigger than 99% of the people in the world.
    (Superman is 6'4" 225 lbs.) but I'm far better looking ....
    Brompton claims that the bike will accommodate someone that is 6'5"
    and weighs 242. I believe this is true but only to a point.
    The owners manual calls it a Trekking bike not a touring bike.
    It is not designed to pull a trailer page 23 of the 2019 owners manual.
    242 lbs is the max all up weight of the bike.

    170 lbs (The average weight for humans)

    Love your videos and channel and admire your bike life-style. There is nothing in this video about why a Brompton is better than any other folding bike - aside from perhaps its smaller folded size. Now that you've retired your Brompton from regular use (having discovered that if you actually ride it that its expensive to maintain and its proprietary part list is not always easy to source) do you perhaps want to retract your shameless Brompton pimping just a bit? Is my cheap 20" Alu bodied, chrome-moly forked folder, 10 times worse than the Brompton? Its a tenth of the cost, uses Shimano Revo, has the most advanced rim brakes (V-brakes) ever designed, everything is generic and cheap to replace or can be replaced with generic parts. Folders are great but Bromptons are a ridiculous cult with their inefficient side-pull caliper brakes and their pram-like 16" wheels. Suited perhaps to London and its Underground but a bit ridiculous in any other part of the world. Well, that's the conclusion I've come to. I think when people plunk down such a huge wad of cash for their Brommies that they are so over-invested in the whole idea of being a Brom owner that that have to sell it to the world in order to justify it to themselves. Cult behaviour in other words.

      @@ibikeunfolded I noticed last night Brompton has a 54T chain ring that provides and 8% ratio increase so I’m thinking that might be a good compromise. It will give a decent speed increase while not effecting the fold and it comes with the chain ring guard and will definitely be an easy install. Of course it means having to buy a slightly longer chain, but then the old chain and chain ring can be saved for future use. There are so many little upgrades and mods out there it’s kinda driving me nuts. Anyway, if you can think of anything I’m not thinking of that would prevent successfully installing the 54T, please let me know. I wish I could come to Colorado and go on some rides with you. Over 90% of Americans have Brompton hesitancy. Its a big problem. So much fake news about low speeds, uncomfortable butts, they don't know what to believe. I've tried several folding bikes. The best, without question is the carbon fiber hummingbird bike with carbon wheels, single speed. It completely blows all other folders out of the water in every possible area. Easier to transport than the brompton due to the way it folds and 6.8kg weight. Also, due to the weight and high quality components, a little pedaling and the bike just FLIES and keeps going. Once you learn how to ride it, the flying feeling you get is unlike any other bike. And it is way more fun to have a single speed. All you have to do is stand and use your body weight when starting from a stop or up hills, and you dont need (or want) gears. If the hill is too steep just walk, it is so light you barely realize you are pushing the bike up hill at all compared to just walking. My other bikes are just gathering dust, like you say (they are all geared) even when I don't need to use public transportation. One thing I will say, I had to add a kinekt suspension seat post and a spongy wonder bike seat so it is ultra comfortable for long rides, but I have to do that for all of my other bikes as well anyhow.
