Hai 650 F1: The First Hypercar
So on this channel we dive into weird cars from the past a lot, cars that are lesser known or sometimes even cars that never made it to the production line. Among these the Monteverdi Hai 650 F1 occupies a particularly intriguing space. This is an ultra-rare Swiss supercar, with its Formula One heart and awesome design.
To understand the Hai 650 F1, we must first delve into the history of the Monteverdi name, a name linked to the man behind it - Peter Monteverdi. A Swiss entrepreneur with a fervent passion for motorsport and luxury cars, Monteverdi started his automotive journey in a rather conventional manner. He established himself as a successful importer, bringing established marques like Ferrari, BMW, and Lancia to the discerning Swiss clientele.
Now I made a more indepth video on why Monteverdi got created, so I wont get to deep into it here. If you want more info, go and watch that video after this one. But to sum it up Peter had a good working relationship with Enzo Ferrari, even working with him on building some cars. But then they had a dispute and Monteverdi decided to make his own brand of luxury grantourers and In 1967, he establishing Monteverdi Automobil AG.
Now at the start he focused more on luxury grand tourers such as the Monteverdi Highspeed. But later on his passion for speed would lead him to create something special, and what many would consider the first hypercar.
You see The year is 1970 and in this year the world witnessed the arrival of the Monteverdi Hai 450 SS, a car that marked a turning point for the brand. This mid-engined sports car, named "Hai" - German for "shark" - signaled a more performance-oriented direction. The Hai 450 SS boasted a sleek Italian body, wrapped around a Chrysler V8 engine. While details remain hazy, the car's exact production numbers are shrouded in mystery, with estimates ranging from three to fourteen. In other words they didn’t build a whole lot. And that could easily have been the end of the Hai.
Anyways In 1989, Peter Monteverdi took a bold step by acquiring the struggling Onyx Formula One team. Though the team's F1 career was brief, lasting only part of the 1990 season, the experience proved to be an important moment for Monteverdi. Witnessing the cutting-edge technology and engineering prowess of F1 firsthand ignited a spark within him. This spark would soon evolve into the crazy concept that became the Monteverdi Hai 650 F1.

What a shame it only ran for 5 hours! These cars need to be driven and loved, not just collected. 11'000 RPM and under 900 kg curb weight, just amazing!

His museum in Basel was closed a few years ago, but some of it has been re-located to the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne Switzerland.
As a Swiss I loved his cars!
    Thanks Chris 👍💪✌

Remember when it came out and Monteverdi joined F1. His son even drove one season. For us Swiss petrol heads it was a big story but unfortunately it did not work out 🤷‍♂️
I miss the time when cars weighed just over a ton….

Beautiful car. Looks a lot like a Ferrari F50, but I never was a fan of the F50's design in the front. This car looks way better in my opinion.
Too bad it never really had a chance to do its thing. But this car was a beast!

Next gen, Playstation 6, I hope there's an open world hypercar Sim, not an arcade racer, a sim. Tracks are nice but, sometimes you want to drive a Koenigsegg on the open simulated road at full power. Imagine like a Malibu canyon all raytraced, or the North Cascades Loop all misty and foggy. In a simulated car with all the realistic mechanics and effects. Instead of GT8 and GT8: "Horizon", GT8, and GT8: open world.

Let's face it - it came out a time when much better-looking cars were available. It's got nothing on the F40, Diablo or F1 in the looks department and looks like an unfortunate copy of the Jaguar XJR-15 Sport. I mean it's not ugly by today's low standards but back then was peak hypercar era with the likes of the aforementioned, the Bugatti EB110 SS, Tatra MTX, BMW M1, Lotus Esprit V8, Mercedes CLK GTR, Ferrari F50, Lister Storm, Dodge Viper, Vector M12, Peugoet Oxia and others I can't remember off the top of my head now.

The only car that could have been it's peer would have been the heavier Porsche Carrera GT V10😅😅😅
