  • Putting an F1 engine on a road car is no easy task, that’s why we have only a few successful examples. But looks like every now and then a car maker gives the F1 engine a try. And so did Peter Monteverdi in 1992. So hello guys and welcome back on another short stories episode and here is the Monteverdi Hai 650 F1 The Montevrdi name is almost unknown, But this Swiss supercar maker has quite a rich and interesting story Like Lamborghini,Monterverdi also entered the sport car market after an argument that he had with Enzo. Ferrari tried to insist that Monteverdi would buy a fairly large batch of cars from him, while paying in advance, Monteverdi was against this deal, plus he hinted that the cars from Maranello were not reliable and uncomfortable, his rich clients often complained the lack of luxury. However, the dialogue didn’t work out and breaking off a partnership that lasted almost 8 years, and so Monteverdi decide to go on the footsteps of Feruccio going against the “Commendatore” and creating his own company. But differently from Lamborghini, Monteverdi decided to use a formula which was quite popular at the time this was building Italian bodied cars with American engines, and this is probably the reason why Monteverdi never made it big like Lamborghini. In the late 70s they saw a hard decline on sales, and so they became more like coachbuilders, working with Mercedes, Range Rovers and a number of other cars and so in 1984 Monteverdi closed its doors. But the full story of Monteverdi is a story for another time. In the early 90s Montverdi decide to enter the car market again, And they planned to do this by building a Supercar. And this was no ordinary Supercar, Since was going to be power by a F1 engine. In 1990 Peter Monteverdi a struggling F1 team called Onyx, but by the time that Monteverdi got the full ownership and naming rights the team had gone bankrupt. Without an F1 team but with an F1 car, Peter decided to enter the production market again. And in 1992 Monteverdi presented the Hai 650 F1 The Onyx F1 car used a Coswoorth DFR 3.5l v8 this was quite a popular engine among F1 teams in the late 80s, With names like Benetton, Jordan, Tyrell among other utilizing different versions of this engine. Now is quite hard to find exact information about the 650, since the car never made a public debut, and was only showed to a potential costumers. But Monteverdi Museum, which was founded in 1985 by Peter, claims That the car 650hp @11000 rpm And a curb weight of supposedly 550kg, Which is quite hard to believe for a car of this size, Despite the use of carbon fiber, The top speed was at 320kmh, While the acceleration time at 3s. The design on the other side, Quite generic for the time and similar with the Nazca and also with the Centenaire MonteCarlo Autmobile. The price of the car was 1m DM which was double the price of a f40. Only two prototypes were ever build one in red and one in with gradient purple to silver color. There are a number of sources that claim that 6 examples were built but that is hard to believe. So guys thank you for watching and see you next time.

Huge respect to the Cosworth DF series engines for lasting in F1 for such a long period.

I see many styling cues that made their way to the F50

I think that the Monteverdi Hai 650F1 inspired Christian von Koenigsegg... because the later first prototype of the first production car look almost like the Monteverdi..

It looks like jaguar stole the design for the xj220 and stuck a longer wheelbase on it!

You’re one of the best channels on YT when it comes to fun information on some of my favorite cars. I just have one question- what nationality are you? I like to think I’m fairly good at identifying accents. But you kinda leave me guessing.

Yeah Jitto is another good example, there is of course the E60 M5 but the engine didn't came straight out of a F1 car. Under my knowledge F50 is the only and the One of Mercedes which is taking forever.

@@AlfaGuy2 the museum has been closed "with discretion" with part of the collection going to the 'national' museum of transport in Lucerne Switzerland, where the display method is say 'not optimal', and part sold "with discretion" to some buyers who have the talent to be at the right place at the right time, god knows how they manage do do that. Both solutions not serving the interest of the brand / history of the brand ..., IMO, which I find surprising and very sad.
