For the sake of survival on exposure to stress, the cells make adjustments with changes in their environment which may be of two types:
• Physiological
• Pathological

Such adaptations occur by following process:
Decreasing or increasing their size, as happen during a trophy and hyper trophy respectively, or by increasing their number as occur in hyperplasia, and by, changing the pathway of phenotypic differentiation as occur in metaplasia and dysplasia.
In general, adaptive responses are reversible on with drawl of stimulus. However, if the stimulus persist for longer time, the cell may not be able to survive and may either, die or progress further.
