- Guitar cover of Nirvana - SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT
Firstly, a huge thanks to @AaronRash - if you guys haven't seen his videos, I would highly recommend them, especially if you are a Nirvana fan. I thought my tone chasing was a labour of love until I found Aaron's channel. He really goes the extra mile!! So, a big thanks to his hard work so that I could get pretty close to the tones for this cover, without having to tear my hair out figuring out what I needed to use!
If you play guitar, you've probably learnt this riff at some point - it's a guitar players right of passage! I has so much fun playing along with this one and trying to get as close to the tones from the record too.
I used Nembrini Audio's Vox AC30 plugin for the clean tones - this was probably a Fender Bassman on the record but I couldn't get my guitar clean enough with the Bassman plugin I own and I was too lazy to switch to a single coil guitar 😅. I used the tweed 4x12 can that comes with the AC30 plugin as these were the closest speakers that were used on the record, without having to buy a new IR pack.
For the meat of the song, I used Nembrini's Mesa Dual Rec plugin on a clean setting as Kurt used the Mesa Boogie Studio preamp on a clean setting before kicking on the good old Boss DS-1 for the actual distortion tone (settings are below in the gear used list). The IR used on this was from OwnHammer and it's the Core Tone Bundle using the Marshall cab and speakers - gets really close to the tone with the DS-1!
The final piece of the puzzle is the chorus effect used in the verse, pre-chorus and solo. I don't own a EHX Small Clone so I used the rack chorus found in the Neural DSP Archetype: Petrucci plugin. Not 100% accurate but does a pretty good job!
I hope you enjoy this one my friends and I'll see you in the next one!

Wow ! unexpected
😁👍🏻
Hell Yes, excellent cover as always man, funnily enough I was listening to Nirvana today
Thanks Ash! Such a fun song to play - what a great band they were 😁🤘🏻
Fantastic Nick!!!
One of the BEST songs of ROCK of all times.
Although Kurt Cobain wasn't very technique, he was very Creative and a great composser. And had a total skill for playing power chords and strange and noisy solos, that was a characteristic of him.
Thank you Nick!!!
Keep going!!!
Thanks Jorge! It’s an absolute classic! And you’re right, just shows what you can do with some really simple chords. Sometimes it’s about the attitude of the song and some great lyrics to hook onto 😁👍🏻
Always happy to see you upload, great as always!
Thanks so much! 😊👍🏻
Amazing Nick! Perfect timing too as I’m just starting to write my own music and I’m on yet another Nirvana kick. I’m loving these non-Incubus covers! Sorry I didn’t comment on the last video, it was very awesome! Have a great day :)
Thank you! It’s been a lot of fun trying to get different tones from different guitar players 😁. Enjoy writing your own stuff 😊👍🏻🤘🏻
Hey nick I’ve been loving all the new vids any chance you could cover “be quiet and drive”???
Thank you! And yes, absolutely 👍🏻. It will be coming soon 😁
I absolutely second this comment!!
@@TheTouc85 😏
We so should start up a gofundme for nick to get an 8 string to cover rocket skates 🚀
@@TheTouc85 I’d love for him to get a 7 or 8 string definitely opens up a world of possibility
Hey, this isn’t Incubus! Jokes aside, sounds on point as usual man.
😁 thanks! Been mixing it up recently to give myself a bit of an incubus detox as their songs are all I’ve covered for nearly 4 years! 😳
@@Fitzgerd I believe it. I think you’ve mastered incubus my friend. I’ll keep watching whatever’s next!
Thank you! 😊👍🏻
Good ear for the tones! I have to say I was missing that g string fourth fret being barred on the first chord and the third chord. Doesn't he bar that little jangly note? Listen closely-er.
Thank you! It’s thanks to Aaron Rash’s hard work with his channel - check it out if you haven’t already 😁. You can bar across, I believe this is how Kurt preferred to play power chords. It’s meant to just be power chords as far as I know. Justin Guitar does a really good tutorial explaining this too 👍🏻
@@Fitzgerd awesome yeah Aaron's channel is fun! I meant third fret by the way I think you graciously understood what I meant. I'm a huge Mike einziger fan and heavily influenced by him early on, love your dedication!
He does a stellar job of recreating Nirvana tones 😁. Thank you, Mikey is the man!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Why didn't you use a chorus pedal?
I don’t actually own a chorus pedal 😅. I could have played around with my flanger but using a plug-in I already had was a lot faster 😁👍🏻
I almos dont belive that you play it. Sounds like recorded track from original. Fick!
Thank you! Was a lot of fun re creating this one. If you’re into Nirvana, check out Aaron Rash’s channel. His videos helped me nail the tone for this one 😊👍🏻
@@Fitzgerd Yes I am into Nirvana. Maybe too much and too long ;) Aarons chanel - now it.
