    A confession: SPIN is imperfect. It’s rough-edged, restless, insatiably curious. A little aggressive, a little cocky. Youthfully uncompromising, but maturely flexible. Romantic - definitely! Irreverent - sure! Unpredictable - yes. Very alive.

    Yelling just came so naturally to him. He was angry and he could express it in a way no one else could. Singing loudly/yelling is pretty hard to do. And to top it off his lyrics were so good. He wasn’t even using proper technique either.

    • @Bye_Good
      @Bye_Good Год назад +238

      It didn’t actually come naturally. It tore his vocals chords up and he suffered a lot of pain as a result. I don’t believe he ever learnt how to sing from his diaphragm or from his gut. But it definitely gave us that raw sound that he did so well, albeit it did affect him physically.

    I honesty don't get how people place Stayley above this genius. Layne was awesome. But I've covered his more brutal vocals. This one always shows me flames. Not to mention the absolutely gorgeous raspy yet silky pipes on the verse. Goosebums

    To think about what a sensitive and deeply introspective artist he was that came from a blue collar town of timber and fish; a place where probably not many artists could really exist. I mean if you could imagine the life he would’ve lived if he never joined a band or got famous. I think part of that person exists in his voice and was able to express themselves in such a profound way. You really hear his lived experience carry through. I think the world often needs an artist like that who can be so authentic and real

    The singers do not define grunge. It’s the whole band. Yet I think facelift came out a bit before the whole scene blew up.

    He could do take after take after take of vocals and somehow could manage to match the pitch perfectly every single time, on every single take. There's a very small list singers who can do that.

    Even at age two he was making good music. Just the lyrics alone make it a badass song the way he sings it sounds so good.
