I feel very fortunate to have seen Dennis perform about 25 years ago when I first was introduced to jazz. He played at Binghamton University with Mike Stern and Lincoln Goines...blew me away. I've been a fan ever since. Dennis is a giant.
Anyone who thinks Chambers sucks feel free to post your solo video and show him and us how it's done. If you're going to talk the talk, walk the walk..
He is so unique. Good lord. So conceptual. His musical ideas are so interesting. In regards to what he's doing around 2 minutes, he's keeping time with his right foot and snare then speeding up his "time keeping" right hand. Then he does the opposite. It's like he's playing call and response with the tempo. Like the tempos are talking to each other. Like the tempo IS the music, not just a framework for it to sit in. So weird. So interesting.
ah.....wow....lol...he just continues to amaze me....he is one of the best drummers in the world over the past 25+ years....thats feels amzing to say in its self.
What's even more incredible is that he's a self-taught drummer AND he plays "all genres" of music to perfection which his puts him in a class with a very select few...he's untouchable!!!
When I search RUclips for best black drummers of all time and this Dude doesn't show up in the first few pages it makes me very sad and weep for the genre. This man's work cannot be lost amongst the noise, please don't let it be so.
Andy Boily why would you limit him to just a black drummer? His ability crosses all racial and cultural divides. That's what make him great! Don't be so closed mined.😳
I purchased this DVD years ago. The only way I could find to buy it was from SLP Electronics, the company that produced the video. It's called "SURROUNDED BY DRUMS," from 2001, demonstrating the studio's state-of-the-art technology....recording in Surround Sound. It has 2 solos and interviews from each artist --- D. Chambers, Simon Phillips, Kenny Aronoff and Mel Gaynor.
I had a copy of the 5.1 version of this! The mic manufacture's original design started as a Hoola-Hoop on tall legs with 5 Mics mounted on it above the drums! Yes I do remember!
Thank-YOU, DrummaAddict! That was mAHvelous! I am left awe-struck every time I. Catch a glimpse of this man with sticks in his hand. I feel like I've followed him all my life. Actually, that's pretty close to true, and I'm a young lady in her … umm … er … what I meant to say is, and I'm 49 years young! ;-)
I hear one William Cobham. I love his sound on this recording. Everything is separate and beautiful. Haters go home. Dennis is just doing his thing. Everyone can't be Vinnie and Gadd.
5:24 he did a mistake whit his snare and dont like, lol Dennis always be one of my best drummer ever and still no one play like him, i work his solo BDBD HH then swing ride and always single stroke on snare and it part of my solo now tanks MR. Chamber to open me the door on that one, always love you king Dennis Chambers !
I have much respect for Dennis Chambers. What I find highly amusing is the number of critics who are obviously so much better players than him. They don't just leave, they want us to have an argument with them! OK STFUAFO! Go!
You have to be a drummer I think to really appreciate how good this guy really is. Yea. i was one about 35 years ago. Maybe I'll get one of those electric sets with head phones so I dont drive the family nuts. Could be theraputic?
this man need sticks and heads made of asbestos with the speed of light moves he has. very very impressive i must say . he deserves every penny and more then he is paid to play.
@kdsf12 Thats your opinion,if Dennis was"unmusical" I don't think he would be in such high demand for sessions or tours. Plus judging solos is like walking into a conversation. Especially if it's during a middle of a song. His solos from his earlier years are very Dynamic. Look for the video of him playing at the China Club in 1990.
It's not a Decca Tree, it's surroundsound recording.. But I would never have found out without your Decca Tree hint :-) Google "Atmos 5.1 Surround Miking System SPL"

This guy's on a completely different level from anyone else. Just incredible.
no doubt the GREATEST drummer of all time
saw dennis play with santana here in tampa,fl in the middle of summer and he wasn"t even sweating-fantatsic-a truly great drummer
And one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. Love it when talent doesn't go to a guy's head.
He's my fav drummer. He has such great dynamics and passion.
fastest and smoothest single stoke roll offs in the business!
One of the best drummers of all time~!! :) ;)
hands down
Anyone who thinks Chambers sucks feel free to post your solo video and show him and us how it's done. If you're going to talk the talk, walk the walk..
What he does owes a lot to Cobham but is nonetheless insanely good. The polyrhythmic stuff is mindbending.
I work my polyrhytmic paterns from him, i a huge a inspiration 4 me

Dennis Chambers is "Greatness" in action...always was...always has been and always will be!!!!!! The man man is phenomenal!!!!!!!
This solo reminds of me of Cobham's style when playing solos. Great stuff.
I like how he doesn't move around a whole lot, but every once in a while he just spazzes out.
Ah....lol....he just amazes me....one of the elite drummers of the past 25+ yrs....thans Dennis.
One of my favorit drummers. I use his signature zildjian sticks long time ago, they´re perfect, And i have his pearl signature snare too xD
What's even more incredible is that he's a self-taught drummer AND he plays "all genres" of music to perfection which his puts him in a class with a very select few...he's untouchable!!!
There is only one Dennis Chambers! What a drummer!!!!!!!!
Just Pure Groove and Skills and Passion!
Wonderful music, thank you!!! The overhead mics are INA 5 surround sound. That is also interesting!
When I search RUclips for best black drummers of all time and this Dude doesn't show up in the first few pages it makes me very sad and weep for the genre. This man's work cannot be lost amongst the noise, please don't let it be so.

Dennis Chambers is the man
Damn that set sounds powerful!!!
his snare sounds sooo sexy, like somthing out of the 60's
Dennis chambers, danny carey, gavin harrison, chris coleman, tony royster jr,are some of the top drummers of all time...and theres loads more out there
His solo reminds of Billy Cobham's solo called Last Frontier.
He is simply amazing
5:24 he did a mistake whit his snare and dont like, lol Dennis always be one of my best drummer ever and still no one play like him, i work his solo BDBD HH then swing ride and always single stroke on snare and it part of my solo now tanks MR. I believe it is to reduce "bleed", bassdrum signal that gets picked up by the snare mic for instance.
ho we have a genius soundman here...lol
In the style of Billy Cobham for sure, very cool
Can't listen to this without thinking of Tony Williams.
@RestDayer and just because of that, you can predict what he's going to play?...teach me your magical ways.

@drulius sure. if you choose to ignore what i said - that almost all his licks start with the snare drum.
this man need sticks and heads made of asbestos with the speed of light moves he has. very very impressive i must say . he deserves every penny and more then he is paid to play.
Yep, very nice
@Walterdrumsful I can‘t belive somebody put the name Travis Barker in the same video that Dennis Chambers is, THAT IS A BLASFEMY! OMG!
NICE!!
Thrillin'
you do know dennis was buddy's best student and buddy even said he is the one to carry on his legacy
Dennis has the grove of death.

@Samsgarden Why would there be a hate club? He is 1 of d drumming gods.
Not human
It's not a Decca Tree, it's surroundsound recording..
But I would never have found out without your Decca Tree hint :-)
Google "Atmos 5.1 Surround Miking System SPL"
very cobham influenced this one id say..
@DrummaAddict , I guess because he's just... awesome. :-)
Holy shit.
He is.
ele é o cara
@RestDayer i pespect your opinion. but rmber that we drummers have no end to our learning process so it is limited to what new sounds we can produce
