- Watch Dennis Chambers play “Blue Matter” off John Scofield’s 1986 album of the same name (and stick around to the end where he breaks down the groove).
This performance features a laid back groove, ghost notes, double strokes on the kick, and the deepest pocket. It’s a lesson in control and discipline: you don’t need to be flashy to be a great drummer! Dennis Chambers is well known for playing exactly what the music needs.
Close your eyes and just listen to Dennis’ incredible touch and dynamics. What a great sounding drummer.
When John Scofield was first putting this track together, Dennis started playing a go-go beat at rehearsal, which was inspired by “We Need Some Money” by Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers. Do you hear the similarities?

Dennis was my father’s favorite drummer. He always highlighted Dennis superior sense of groove. Dad, guess you were right!
Dad's always seem to know...
Great father!!!
It was 1988 and I was 23 years old, when I saw Dennis playing with John at the Leverkusener Jazztage. I will never forget this concert.
I remember when this album came out, I was at Berklee college and all the drummers there FLIPPED OUT and learned this tune (and the whole record). Everyone was playing this on their recitals. Good times!
Still have my Dennis Chambers autographed Blue Matter CD sleeve dated 9/21/93! Thank you Dennis!
Awesome!
Thats very cool!
This is a fantastic piece of music - and very cool drumming by Dennis Chambers.
I met Dennis many years ago by happenstance at Jack’s Drum Shop in Boston. It was a slow Tuesday morning so we were able to spend quite a while talking about many subjects. It is still surprising to me how impactful that encounter was on my playing and career. 30+ years later, I still cherish that meeting with a master.
Glad to see Dennis looking better and still tearing it up!
He's looking so much better here. We need to protect this living legend by any and all means! 🐐
The focus of Dennis when he play is incredible. I wish i can be at this level of focusing
the Best of the Best ... Mighty, Fantastic Dennis
This is phenomenal. I’ve loved this tune since the 80s. I’m a guitar player but was always drawn to this drum part. So cool to see it this way.
Absolute outstanding playing as usual, above all : it’s good to see the GOAT in such great physical condition. 🥂🍾
Such a treat to see him healthy again.
Dennis has sooooo much groove. His offbeats are insane!
damn, from time to time I listen to this tune, great memories
Such a legend!!
I really love the flow of the beats.
Wow, i listening so much times this album! Stil one of my favorite! All the best Dennis!
Sco's Pick Hits Live had some of the heaviest, tightest, funkiest DC playing ever. Don't sleep on this legendary performance. And it's fantastic to see DC back in top form!
With torn jeans!!...
Now I will accept my favorite drummer as DC's own but I'm almost sure he is from Baltimore
@@redlightdistrict8038DC as in “Dennis Chambers”:)

If you know a young drummer, please show them this master at work. Magnificent DC at his damn funkiest.
Who makes records like THIS anymore, in 2022? NOBODY!
Goodness!! I can hear every hit clearly!!! Awesome!!
We drummers don’t set or create the time - we simply stay with it.
Love this.
Actually as a drummer I always felt the time (real unacknowledged) keeper was the bassist...
Grew up on this album and Still Warm. Thank you for the musical roots.
So beautiful!!
Love the snare hits at 0:10 and 06:40.
That's something I would tap to a beat when I'm going about my day, like a drummer's tic or something.
GOAT playing another GOATs music
That was awesome trick footwork WOW! Blown away at what he has going on here. The man had at least two separate beats going at the same time. The counting in his head is masterful!
Omg!! that was beautiful! ❤
The best in the business, one of the funkiest grooves!
🔥🔥
Thats a great a lesson! Fastest drummer play the simplest way possible. Drummer have a specific role in the band. Listen to Dennise’s great speech he made on youtube few years ago about todays music. Thats great Mr. Chambers. Thank you!
Cheers, Patryk!
Dennis showing where the cool starts.
Mesmerized! 🔥 Pure GOAT!!! 🔥🔥🔥
El Rey del Groove!. Dennis es una gran Inspiración. Saludos desde Argentina. Excelente el canal de Drummeo
I love Dennis. When I first learned how to play I only studied Dennis
The Best 🇧🇷
O melhor 🇧🇷
Lo mejor 🇧🇷
Worked for a sound co. Played drums for 30yrs. So we ended up doing sound for a Mike Stern gig, with Chambers on drums. He's other worldly. Genius.
Classy!!!
Master Supreme 🤴🏿🥁💥
I think that back then, Mr Chambers was inspired by The Man who created this groove, and The Man was: Chuck Brown with the "Go-Go" check Him out.
Love anyways Mr Chambers playing He is Awesome!
Carus Alambra 😉👍
I think we have world's most groovy man in our presence
I didn't knew about Denis but I clicked on the video. Absolutely amazed
Magical!!! Amazing how his style evolved from seeing this in his "In The Pocket" video many years ago.
Good timing on this release; I watched Rick Beato's interview with John Scofield before I watched this. Chambers is a beast!
Fantastic!
Great job Dennis, thanx.
Cheers, Kevin!
I love the way he shrugs his shoulders and says: "That's Blue Matter!" as if it's no biggy - which for him, it's not! Bruilliant! Such a grooove, such a sence of the music, not going over it, but playing WITH it.
Classic Dennis. SO good!
Second to none.
Dennis, I love you style! I have learned the fatback, working on the polish. I love this groove, I am going to learn it too. And I love that kit! Are those Pearl Masters custom? I just bought the Pearl STS very similar to your setup, 7 piece 3 up 2 down and my 3 sided Icon curved rack is on its way. I cannot wait!
Wow, a dream come true to see a modern drum playthrough of this classic song. Those kick triplets are tough though..... time to go practice!
Seeing several of his clinics @Explorers Percussion as a young teen in the early 90's definitely altered my musical trajectory
Una delicia escuchar al maestro Dennis Chambers tocando esta canción.
0:33 .... dear Lord ... the triplets .... dang.
So glad to see him healthy again…
I just watched a video from 2020 and he looked super ill. Did he have cancer or something?
Blessed ❤️🙏🏻
It doesn't get cooler than this.
Ion like anything about Baltimore but this man
This may be my most favorite drum groove, ever. My vhs of In The Pocket is worn out in this spot 😂, straight up blew my mind as a kid. Such foot control and power. I still hope to play it as well as Dennis someday.
Amazing groove, no doubt!
Dennis Chambers sendo ele sempre 👏👏👏 pode ter bateristas parecidos mas igual impossível
Dennis is a monster!! Please ask him to teach Otay intro! what a groove
Dennis rules… 👊
The Universe!!
Is it weird that when Dennis starts breaking it down, I start thinking i have tabs still open? Lol
KING OF POCKET!!!
Epic bass
So funky
Gary Grainger. Soooooo underrated
I encourage you all to seek out some live videos of this tune, unbelievable pocket and dynamics
God damn 🙏🔥
I do like a good foot on the snare groove.
Dennis Chamber in the house. I am curious if there is a snare bottom mic. Simon Phillips said he doesn’t like them usually because it takes away dynamic range. Sometimes ghost notes are pretty hot with that bottom snare mic.
THE Drummer's Drummer.
I totally love the tone of a whole drumset!
Can you tell me the model of the hihat and crashes?
He uses two bottom cymbals as a hi hat.
Yep two 13" hh bottoms. Makes a heavier pair for a crispy sound.
@@brittonshupe clearly zildjian...
Quarter-note era Dennis ... we're not worthy
I remember the first time I saw In the pocket smh I stop playing drums after cause I realise I wasn’t playing this man is the greatest of grovers you will ever come across
The groove master!
He's so crisp.
Dennis is sublime. Now if you could only bring Vinnie to drumeo. That would be so awesome it can't even be quantified.
Ahahaha, good one, but, IMPOSSIBLE !!!
Well, you never know, but it's simply impossible. :-)
@@RogerBiwandu Vinnie wouldn't accept, right?
Amazing single foot speed and 4th on hi hat, big sound and feel, wanna try it 👍also see that volume does not matter in the main parts, just Touch the cymbals... Great man, Greetings from Germany 😉😎
Cheers from Canada!
Those ghost notes...🤤
Soo clean!
the most epic
I got the blue matter tape.
It took me being super fucking stoned to realise that real music is an actual language.
Now I need to go watch "Jherri Curl" Dennis play Blue Matter on In the Pocket, possibly my favorite recorded version of that song. IYKYK
them ghost notes sounds scary lol a haunted tune
I remember getting the 'in the pocket' and 'serious moves' vhs. Good Times. When was this filmed. How is dennis' health? Looking well
Dennis was in our studio in February and he looked and seemed healthier than ever!
As Miles would say "nice touch."
the composureee
Does anyone know what microphone Drumeo use for the crash/cymbal?
🤤🤤🤤
Lordy, Lordy! I think the whole Internet has stank face after this post was released into the ether.
Only if we had this kind of media back in the day!...
Please guys just upload the video with simon phillips
Where can I find that drum set color????
Is this a thing to hit the cymbal from the bottom like he does at 0:47? I had never seen anyone do it on purpose before
Dennis chambers actually does that a lot, check his old footage with John Scofield
Buddy used to that a lot so as Weckl lately.
😱 i always thought that the drummers are just athlets that hit some Drums with sticks....🙈. This man is a genuis. There MUST be something he REALLY is bad at in life.
I could be wrong, but I think he totally sucks at field hockey.
Master %)
what hats is he playing?
Hey Fernando, dein Vater hatte ein gutes Gefühl, Dennis Chambers groovt wie kein anderer.
Dude you’d think he was using a double bass pedal
easy.
For me he sounds like machine. No músic. In Other hand i love Jeff porcaro
What is it suppose to sound like lmao!
wat the
I can hear a Ken Smith in there... nice
I never noticed how much he buries the beater. It looks like he uses that technique as a springboard for those fast doubles and triples...
That's why I think the whole 'bury or don't bury the beater' argument is a bit bogus. If it works for a master like Dennis then it's good enough for me 🤷♂️
@@drummerdan95 🤷♂️ it depends on wether you want ring, or if the beater chatters ( especially if you use a double bass pedal ) .... I personally find nothing wrong with burying it.
FUNKY!
