please can you do a thumb position vibrato video, im finding it so difficult to put this all into higher positions, there aren't many videos on RUclips about it and youre good at explaining without overcomplicating stuff! xx
@@zeddling151 ikrrrrrrr... I still couldn't find a video or an article to help me correct this problem.. do post some links if you get any.. and I will too..🤩
I had the same problem. I think it has to do with the way you are holding your cello. The vibrato just brings the problem out. If the cello is not tight against your chest in a flat way, or if it's leaning to the side a little, any vibrato will make it shake. Make sure if you let go of your hands the cello falls on your chest comfortably, in effect you need to be hugging your cello closer so it doesn't shake.
Oh boy, my neighbors are going to love these exercises!!! Thank you, this is a new approach to vibrato than what I have seen before, I am still a beginner so I need different approaches :) Thanks again for everything you do!!!
I am good, been so busy it is overwhelming! Work, learning to build instruments, learning cello - so much to do! But it is always nice to have your videos to enjoy :) I hope you are staying healthy and happy throughout this pandemic!
oh, no. My neighbours gonna be not amused. But I guess I'm not ready to learn vibrato yet. Still in the first year of learning cello and enjoying the journey. My intonation's going better and better! 😊
Oh man this was useful. I've been playing for 12 years now (though I started when I was four so most of them don't really count) but I've just taken on my first student. I was completely stumped when we encountered a problem with vibrato, all the techniques I had used to learn it had slipped my mind so this has been a great refresher on how to explain, and exercises for, vibrato. Thank you!
I just started and have been able to fly through most techniques just not vibrato I was like “wellllll if I was playing with my right hand yes but left?! How am I supposed to do this?” And I saw this video and was like “oh, that doesn’t seem impossible” I learned to knit too so I know my left hand is not useless in the fine motor skills but my brain was not amused
I told you on an earlier post about not knowing the first thing about the cello. I may as well have been watching lessons on learning advanced Tagalog. But I do enjoy your playing and teaching techniques.
Ma, I found your explanation more explicit. Love to vibrate on cello I’m already following the exercises. As I’m improving, I’ll be acknowledging your instructions.
You know what’s weird? I used to play cello in high school but as of late I started to play guitar and I use cello vibrato on guitar. It is very unique.
Don't guitars have frets? How would that work? if you move your finger within a fret, the note will stay the same, because the fret just up from your finger is stopping and creating the note.
@@RobManser77 a fret on a guitar is not a note set in stone, there are microtonal notes within a fret. It literally works the same way. That’s why microtonal guitars have a plethora of small tiny frets. Watch this… ruclips.net/video/Nlj5X3o0R-0/видео.html
@Rob Manser I'm primarily a cellist but just tried this on guitar and ukulele. It does work on fretted instruments but the change in pitch and timbre is super small
Thanks! This is the closest I’ve come to doing vibrato. It’s Never too late to learn new things. I’m almost 50 & It’s been slow progress, but I’m getting better.
Your smile is like a ray of sunshine on a rainy day your smile makes me want to be better at the cello the only reason I started playing was because of you and there was this kid in my class that has been playing for a while and you made me realize that I can progress and I was able to play swan lake dance of the swans so thank you for teaching me how to play I have only been playing for a year so you rock you motivate me. Her: “Go get your Cello” Me 19 wanting to learn cello, but too late to learn it good enough to make a living out of it, so I just focus on other Uni stuff: *UGLY SOBS*
Then go get your cello man ! It may be late but just stop thinking too much, learn it, find a teacher if possible, dedicate a regular part of your free time for practicing it and enjoy playing for yourself ! In 10 years you'll be getting close to your 30's and will already have 10 full years of practice under you belt. It IS something ! Look at all the young folks playing amazing stuffs at 15 or 16. Most probably they started playing at 5, so 10 years of practice is what they have too... Now Imagine yourself reaching the same 30 without even knowing how to hold a bow nor play a basic C scale. Believe me you'll be slapping yourself even harder for not having started before, because you could be already playing a ton of neat stuffs. I started learning the cello only 3 years ago, and I'm going on my 35s. The biggest thing I regret is not having started at 19 when I bought my first apocalyptica album and fell in love with the instrument. Don't waste as much time as I did, you will regret every bit of it !
I started when I was 28 lol, just passed grade 8, not flexing, if I want to spend two more years on it, to ATCL, I am qualified to teach, thats a second stream of income right? And I am actually a carpenter by trade, I know its meant to be a joke, but don't give it up too early mate :D
I asked for a cello for my graduation present and my husband got me one, I’m 25 and a mom to a toddler I just sit and mess around and make noise at this point but it kinda chose me in a weird way, my husband plays the violin and I asked to hold it one day after I got him new strings, I play castanets and sing but don’t know any other instrument, I didn’t like the violin though my arms were too short to complete a whole note properly so I saw a cello and asked to hold it, it like molded to my body, but the bow was missing. Later I tried to find a music store in town that sold castanets and I saw the cello and asked to try it. They handed me the bow and it was like I had been doing it my whole life! Both the instructors were like “you’re doing everything right, you basically would need to just learn the name of the notes and their placement, and you’d be able to play since you can read music.” Bowing is fun and easy but I’m struggling with vibrato. I wanna learn a good technique before I start learning notes but it’s not impossible. I randomly just picked one up one day and made noise with it and my body was like “yes, we like this” so when I finished my degree my husband asked what I wanted for graduation and I said a cello. Low and behold, a cello showed up at my door. Just ask for it as a graduation present if anyone asks hahaha. Hope you get your cello!
thank you wendy... your teaching is really amazing and i loved the time you sayd that we should imitate the cello voice with ours. it's a routine to me... i don't have cello now but whenever I sing i feel that i can convey my sound to cello absolutely the Vibrato. by the way, again thanks🥰🥰 love you and hope to buy my cello ASAP and watch your videos teaching me but this time with my lovely hypothetical cello which will be real one day. love you👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I want to learn cello I have tried to keep time with the vibrato and sliding the bow at the same time. Its like patting the belly and circling the head at same time. How do you get to where you can do it separate without crashing?
Ok...ive played guitar all my life and have always wanted to learn cello. I am one month in and I am obsessed. I have been looking at videos all day on how to vibrato (totally different from guitar) and this one is already the best. I am only a few minutes in and already feel like these are the tips and excersises I have been looking for. Thank you Wendy. I did see some videos that told people to squeeze the body of the cello with their legs so that it doesnt move while doing a vibrato. Do you suggest this?
Hi Wendy I am having trouble controlling the speed of my vibrato, it’s too fast and sounds like a bumble bee lol if I relax everything in my arm and wrist I feel like I won’t be able to control it at all
My cello teacher says that I need to do it with my shoulder when I’m doing it with my wrist/forearm. I can’t figure out how to feel those muscles moving.
I'm trying but no matter how much i try and how long i try, it's as if my finger, wrist and elbow is glued together tightly. It legit won't relax at all...
I'm trying to figure out how to relax my arm, knuckles, everything except my finger and end up crying every time. I hope someday it clicks! Thanks for the tutorial
