Thank you for this video! I played from 6th grade through high school and at 38, took up practicing again and appreciate all your tips and tricks. It's so frustrating to feel the ghost of the memory of playing but to sound like a beginner again.
I went to an international Orchestra concert as the Tenor Horn. The Cellist was sitting right next to me during practise and during one of the breaks I asked if I could play on it. I instantly fell in love with it. From then on I spent every break in the Band room learning the cello. This video helped me a lot!!!!
My teacher is quite the stickler for a lot of these. One thing he has always said is that i have beautiful sound for a beginninger. I think its great when your teacher can see your strengths and weakness because he saw i have good ear so had me start practicing scale with 4th position too. find it with sound. I dont use it for songs or anything but just to start practicing that shift.
This was so helpful, thank you really! My teacher always told me to place the cello in such a way that the pegs are in line with my ear and that really helped me
Very nice review, I played when i was in elementary school, and recently started again. My teacher caught most of these mistakes, but this is a good reminder. I'm about "High School" level at this point.
So helpful! I have such a hard time keeping my bow in the right place. I’m always playing too close to the finger board and not close enough to the bridge.
Hi Wendy FYI, if you don't already know. I have many subs (maybe too many) and have noticed lately for whatever reason, YT does not notify me of new vids!?! I recently signed up for yours + the bell/all. I got them at first, then they, along with others, trailed off. Now, I have to go on and seek them all out. So... a YT quirk or on purpose, I don't know. Thanks. Love your stuff.
Man, I need to slow down my tempo for my Bass and Guitar practice. The would help. Btw waiting for my Cello to come in the mail. I used your amazon video to help me out. Peace with you.
Thank you for these videos! I just started playing cello around a year ago and still have a looooong way to go and I really appreciate all of these tips and tricks! They have helped me improve so much!!
Wendy, I am so glad that I found your channel. As a percussionist, I am learning the Bach Cello suite, in GM, with four mallets. Can you please give me some general considerations a on phrasing now that I'm playing with multiple mallets. Thank you!!!

Thanks Wendy, such a great video that I will review periodically to ensure I'm keeping good cello habits. I definitely have a problem with the flat finger issue. Way too much tension in my shoulder too(on the bow side). After a half hour, I'm really feeling it in my shoulder.
Thank you for your helpful video. I started at the age of 49, too late of course, but I have made my dream come true. I started with a cheap one and some weeks ago I noticed that I had come to the point where some tunes always sounded scratchy and wrong, too metallic in a way. I thought it was my fault. So I bought a better cello and now I know that it had not only been me but the new cello sounds so much better, the strings are more easily to play. I am happy. And, really, one of my biggest mistakes is, I tend to play too fast because I have the factor time in my head...😉🤣 cause I want to make progress faster....
Could you make a video somewhere along the lines of "So you just bought a Cello..." ? Because I did just that last night and there's so much I simply don't know! How to store it at home (in case or is it okay if it's on it's stand) / do I have to loosen the strings when I store it / how do I find a good instructor / should I take it to a cello shop to clean it up since I bought it used / how do you know if you need to keep it humidified or dehumidified, etc! This is a whole new ball game and I want to care for the beaut as well as I can! Thank you!
thank you for your amazing help and fantastic videos about the world of Cello. You are so generous , thank you so much from Spain, and I, ll follow you and your incredible talent!

( I of coarse understand you get what you pay for....but for a beginner)......if not.......that's damn tempting......think in that case I'd rather learn cello than violin......I mean to just to have one would be cool as hell......and to learn it would be absolutely heavenly awesome!
@@WendyLaw Sorry to fill up your comment section with my chatter......but have to say I figured a cello would cost at least 1,000.00 to start......I just checked out Amazon and Ebay and there's a bunch for a few hundred (300.00 and up).....that's awfully tempting......I imagine the one's on "Wish" aren't all that great sound/tone wise.....but I would be just beginning.....anyways please tell me what you think......and hurry.....I've got a craving and might spend the money on chocolate covered cashew caramel clusters!!!!LOL. Can’t wait to watch your video talking about major mistakes for intermediate and advance cellist
I guess I will have to do that one!! Haha
Very helpful tips. My music teacher had me play in front of a mirror, and it definitely helped me see when my bow was getting crooked.
Oh yeah! Mirror is your best friend!
I totally didn’t notice the pillow until you said anything!
Hahah yes 😆
Even though I'm not a beginner cellist, I found this video very valuable! Thank you!

Aww... I only got 9 out of 10 :( I was doing so well until it came to the last one! Great video Wendy, super-useful!
9 out of 10 is not bad!!! Just to clarify, you SHOULD start at the frog on C string especially.
So helpful! I have such a hard time keeping my bow in the right place. I’m always playing too close to the finger board and not close enough to the bridge.
You can do it! Keep up the good work!
Yes, your TP exercise is awesome! Showed it to a new student. Works great!
I just started learning, and subscribed after I heard number one. Thank you for making these videos.
Great tips to look out for.... I will definitely use them. Thanks Wendy!
You are welcome Dan!
My bf is getting me a cello I'm usually a tuba player but they are expensive so he got me a cello and this is going to help a lot

i suggest dropping 2 mallets. what part of the first cello suite requires any 3 or 4 note chords? its 95% single notes, occasionally a double stop.
Excellent descriptions. Thanks Wendy

Great beginner tips! I was losing sound quality by using too much bow.

Good points.
i love your tips thanks
This helped, es now that I know my endpin is too long
Will you do intermediate/advanced mistakes too Wendy?
That’s an excellent idea
Have you noticed Sol Gabetta's weird flat fingers? She plays beautifully but I can't help wonder if she's going to wind up with arthritis.
This is good. I use this
What cello do you recommend to buy for a beginner that is actually good quality?
Renting is a great option so you can figure out if you actually like the cello instead of spending $500 on a cello then realize it isn’t for you
I've always struggled with keeping a steady beat lol.
Have you tried working with the metronome?
@@WendyLaw I do that for the majority of the time.
It’ll come easier one day
@@WendyLaw Thanks :^)
Wow, I love that! And you know what? You should have more subs :-) you deserve this

how to fix no.6 the left hand flat fingers??
I am sometimes too focused on my piece so my cello sounds wrong since I'm not focusing on my fingers! 😅
