- The Seekers have paid a tribute to their late lead singer Judith Durham with the release of a new song ‘Carry Me’ making it a final musical statement from the band
Bruce Woodley wrote ‘Carry Me’ 23 years ago and Judith’s early vocal has been in the Seekers vault up until recently.
Bruce, Athol and Keith took the song to producer Michael Cristiano who completed the recording debuted at the Judith memorial.
Athol Guy said at the Memorial, “This song is now our collective gift to share with you tonight as we celebrate Judith’s magnificent gifts to us all.”
Judith Durham passed away on 5 August 2022 at age 79. Her family accepted the offer of a state memorial from Premier Dan Andrews.
The memorial, held at 7pm on 6 September, 2022 was hosted by Brian and Julie Zemiro
Durham's nephew, Tony Sheehan, said he spoke on behalf of the family.
He said Durham's mother had a wish that her daughters would not be tone deaf.
"She got her wish," he said, to laughter from the audience.
He said Durham was always destined to be a musician, having told her sister during childhood "that one day, she'd sing on all the stages of the world".
He also told a story of Durham's early foray into live music.
"In her teens, Judith was kind of naive," he said.
He also told a story of how Judith entered into the music scene
Week after week the band leader where Judith had requested to first sing from told her to come back next week'."
He said when they eventually let her join in, they were blown away
The band leader asked for her name, and she said Judith Cock - the name she was born with.
Mr Sheehan said Durham was told: "Look, if you're gonna be singing in public, you might want to think about changing your name."
"Oh really? I like Judith," he said she replied.
She later changed her name to Judith Durham, using her mother's maiden name.
On a more serious note, Mr Sheehan remembered his aunt as a deeply generous and optimistic person.
The service featured a number of musical tributes, mainly hits from The Seekers.
Durham's older sister, singer Beverley Sheehan, recalled their shared love of music ever since childhood.
"We'd [sing together] early in the morning and my father would have to come in and say: 'that's enough, your mother can't sleep'," she said.
Durham's surviving Seekers band mates Keith Potger, Bruce Woodley and Athol Guy spoke of their admiration for their lead singer.
"It's a real surreal experience for me, standing on this Hamer Hall stage without Judith," said Potger.
"We shared triumphs and adventures on this very platform.
It was really an emotional service

A great lady has passed and notice must be taken. Those of us who had the privilege of listening to her will miss her. I believe she's in a better place with her husband. May they rest in peace.
She was an wisiting angel to us on earth
Thanks for playing the song in its entirety. I'm sure there are thousands (millions?) of people who hadn't heard it and would have loved to in this context. Guess I'll have to hunt for it on the net somewhere. What a lovely moment blown.
Dear Judith Durham RIP in Heaven forever and ever
Rest in peace dear lady with a angels voice...
The most beautifull voice left us.
She had a beautiful voice
RIP Judith and thanks to the Seekers. I really think Shores of Avalon saved me when my wife of nearly 60 years got dementia and became nearly impossible to live with. And a friend in our village died of MND so I have a slight understanding what she went through. A very great singer and a very great lady.
God Bless Judith She was so wonderful magical Love forever
What a voice
God bless her.!!!
Judith and The Seekers were a wonderful Group!
Don Blake

I’m sorry
This was disappointing because I came here to hear them sing. Instead, I saw Athol Guy speaking at her memorial and then had to listen to someone's rehashing of what we just saw.
Like wise.
I thought I was going to hear the song but no.
What was most disappointing was the narrator whose 1st language is not English & does not speak English very well.
R.I.P Judith.
Please do a better job of editing. WHERE'S THE SONG??
Why are you so rough here you should let them speaking and don't them in the middle of athol guy speaking here to
Where is the song ???and Athol's tribute was cut off why??? Wonderful lady. Wish this wasn't so messed up....😞
Song was muted because of copyright issues😭
You can check it out on the seekers’ official RUclips channel and other music streaming platforms.
