This reminds me of when emulators were used for old games meant for CRT TV's. Emulators allow for much higher quality of the sprites, but they don't actually make the game look better, as the developers at the time utilised the CRT fuzz on the screens to make the game feel less pixelated. The same can be seen in this vid. On 1080p you can easily tell that the picture is made up of factorio items, but if you turn the quality down, the picture gradually becomes more 'photorealistic', as it makes it seem more familiar to the original music video. If you don't believe me, load up 0:31 in this vid, and 0:55 in the original at 1080p. Then turn the quality of this vid down more and more and it will look gradually more accurate to the original.
Making these is now your destiny. I think the "Everything is New to Me" song from 2022's Pinocchio would fit nicely in with the theme you're trying to create.
yea, its almost all automated. i wrote mods.factorio.com/mod/mosaic-generator for individual images. then wrap each step in a for loop to do the whole batch. rails were spawned in with on_chunk_generated concrete was also on_chunk_generated here, but modding autoplace settings is way faster. on a dry run log the position of the train every tick, then spawn in the frames relative to those positions. ffmpeg to split the input video to frames, and to stitch the output frames together with the original audio.
@@daiyahigashikata also the dithering algorithm has debt bleeding between different colours. especially noticable where faces turn purple, and narrow tree trunks made nearly invisible, and the axes at 1:03 on bright frames, some of it might pass for a dream-sequence-like soft focus blur. i fixed the worst of it for Whats This. but then i think the dark frames make the effect more noticable.
