Beautiful performances by my favourite band. Carl and David look so cute, the others are handsome. I could listen to them all day, and sometimes I still do.
i just read about this performance in the new and GREAT book about David Marks. Although they had done some local and regional TV shows this was their first National show i believe from the Red Skeleton show. David Marks is Cool!!! What a great rhythm player too. He never got his due back then but this new book sets the record straight. Welcome back David.
This clip does a great job of showing the two roots of the Beach Boys: 1950s rock 'n roll (e.g., Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry), sure, but also the 1950s men's singing groups, specifically the 4 Freshmen and the Hi-Los, singing jazz standards, of which Things We Did Last Summer is a beautiful example. The tune is by a real giant: Jules Styne.
LOL Those pants are so funny. Kind of a cross between clamdiggers and bell bottom pants. And, I have had blouses that look similar to their shirts. Brian really has great rhythm (like that's a surprise.), and is super cute, to boot. It's fun to see them so early in their careers. And on the second song, Brian's beautiful voice really stands out. When he comes in with his higher-pitched vocals, it's like pure magic. All the boys did a great job harmonizing on this song. I love this video.
bring back the 60's and those beach songs including Beach Boys and Jan and Dean. The days when Ward Pally Austin would broadcast the old 2UW from the northern beaches of Sydney. Coca Cola beach balls, the old National transister radio. Magic days so my sister recalls.
What a time, what a warm and wonderful time it was. How could it have gone so fast? I watched they guys do this, and they were sooo cool! We all wanted to be Dennis, and to sing like Brian. Wolfsky9
Thank you. Actually, since my original posting, I have read about David Marks. I have listened to The Beach Boys since I was a kid in the 1960s, and even watched a few documentraies about them, and have read a bit about them. But somehow I just forgot that anyone but Al Jardine had ever played/sung with the Wilson Brothers and their cousin Mike Love, except for fil-ins Bruce Johnston and Glen Campbell. I also know John Stamos has played drums for them in the years since Dennis' death.
David mainly quite cause he wanted to be like Brian. Be in charge of his own band, write his own songs, produce his own music, and other things he thought he could make it out on his own making David and The Marksmen. But he didn't quite he was still in the band he did local tours in Hawthorne he performed along with al Jardine. He was also on the albums till 1966. He played guitar parts while the band was out on tour.
In an interview, David Marks said that he and Murry Wilson didn't get along. He said he didn't think he should have to carry his own equipment, which was a rule in the band. There was a story about Pete Best being fired from The Beatles because he was good-looking and the others were jealous of the attention he got from girls. But Sir George Martin said Best was fired because he couldn't keep a good beat, and would slow down and speed up too much--in other words, that he was a lousy drummer.
It's true that murry had it out for David Marks. He used to harass him, according to David in a later documentary. Squeezing his shoulder so hard it would make him go down on his knees. He was just a young kid, murry was an idiot.
wow thats dennis in the middle he looks so awkward there just standing and he doesnt look like he is enjoying himself but great song i like both but surfin usa is my favorite out of the 2 thanks for posting this though there r not many videos with David in them but i like al better but still thanks...
I saddens to see one of the founding members of the The Beach Boys, David Marks, not get the credit he deserved. David played on their first six albums, where his pictures on the album covers remain, yet received no gold records, and was not on the stage when the group was inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. No offense to Al Jardine, but to me, the original Beach Boys will always be Brian, Carl, Dennis, Mike, and David.
In his Book Brian Wilson said that he was planning to Fire David Marks and had secretly called Al Jardine from the Road to ask him to rejoin. When David & Murray Wilson (Brian's, Carl's & Dennnis's Father & Manager), kept harassing David, he said "You'd like for me to quit, wouldn't you!" and Murray said: "You heard him say it, he quit!" Yet unlike Pete Best who came out of The Beatles with nothing, David came out of it with something, in the 1980's he got Royalties of $300.000.00 Per Year.
. Yes, Pete Best basically got nothing from the Beatles when he was originally fired from the band in '62 and replaced with Ringo, but in 1995 when the Beatles released "The Beatles Anthology" documentary, book, cd's, etc., he finally DID get paid for his contributions to their early Beatles songs featured in that project.....QUITE handsomely, as a matter of fact (according to the Liverpool Echo, the figure was eight million pounds, about $12.8 million dollars, U.S.) !!: . "Over 30 years later, Best received a major monetary payout for his work with the Beatles after the release of their 1995 compilation of their early recordings on Anthology 1, with Best on drums on a number of the album's tracks, including the Decca auditions." . en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pete_Best#:~:text=Over%2030%20years%20later%2C%20Best,tracks%2C%20including%20the%20Decca%20auditions. .
Amazing--and none of the guys but Dennis could actually surf! But Jan & Dean did ride skateboards on "The T.A.M.I. Show," so we know they could, at least, "sidewalk surf." My guess is Dick Dale did surf. I don't know about The Ventures, but I'd guess some of them. What do you think? Me, I'm like Brian--I'll take a backyard swimming pool or just listen to surf music "in my room." Especially nowadays, with all the crap in the ocean (syringes, etc.) & seemingly-braver sharks coming inland more.
Denny looks gorgeous no matter what he's wearing! The dancing was fine. Back then you didn't have to be a "dancer" to be a good live act like today with JLo and all of that nonsense. As for their clothes, I think it cute for back then. It sure is better than Mike's get-ups from 1965-today! It was about the music back then. It still is for me. The 2nd song was really old-fashioned, even for back then. It smells of Murry. The Boys didn't look like they were too happy to have to perform it either.
Check out "The Lost Beach Boy," a new book about David Marks who was an original member of the Beach Boys for the first few years. the book is full of interesting stories even the most ardent of BB fans has not heard! Phil {Click BB45s for a rare Beach Boys video channel)
From what I understand, David Marks was TOLD to quit. He was far too young to really handle touring and basically acted like a complete assole the entire tour, I guess like most young kids would fresh from their parents house, thrown out into the world, with little supervision. David Marks was still a year younger even than Dennis, and acted like a real spoiled jerk. It was a great relief to be rid of him. Al quit dental school and returned to the group. Good thing.
@@nataliebrogan1287 , In way it was tough Al Jardine only person after David Marks not be related to Murray Wilson. Probably that's another reason why Glen Campbell didn't want join with the beachboys full time.

Okay, I guess it just didn't look like Brian to me, because of a different haircut I am used to seeing on him. Also, the resolution of this video isn't the greatest. But Dennis Wilson's good looks shine through anyway. He could turn a straight guy "gay."
Actually, looking at them, except Dennis they are all either too skinny (Mike Love & Al Jardine) or incredibly out of shape--not at all the image of well-toned surfers. I suspect Brian and Carl were going more for the "Moby Dick" image. But Glen Campbell and Bruce Johnston could have been surfers.
From left to right: David Marks, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Mike Love and Brian Wilson. A super band.

Classic Beach Boys harmonizing. It hasn't happened again since! True talent.
Wow, they were SO young. Technology is crazy. I just saw Mike and Dave in person yesterday and here they are on youtube 45 years ago.

I'm in love with Brian here
I Want Jimmy.
#BigJimWilson. #NelsonsBff
Amazing how they were able to reproduce the exact same take found on the record! ;)
The BBs vocal jazz roots are boss! three touring, two RIP
Still beautiful, still the best.

Cap'n Geech and the shrimp shack shooters

Jeez, they were young here. This has got to be the earliest video I ever saw of the Boys. Thanks for your upload.
the greatest group

Bruce could never be described as a fill-in. He was/is an integral member of the group and still tours with Mike Love.
BUT, Does Mike love???? Possibly his EIGHT ex wives would disagree. That's right, EIGHT!
Absolutely incredible, the trousers are so cool, but yet so funny.
Beach Boys forever

Ricordano la mia giovinezza, questi brani
Brian IS in the video. He's on the right, playing bass. From left to right: David Marks, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson, Mike Love, Brian Wilson.
I thought my implication was that Jan & Dean surfed. And I was pretty sure I had read Dickl Dale surfed. But thank you for confirming this.
WE'LL REMEMBER THEIR MUSIC ALL OUR LIFE LONG
It's amazing how sometimes he sings and his lips barely move. Also, I like the sort of spastic wiggly guy in the very beginning.
He’s lip syncing.
I love them ♥ ♥ ♥
I love your hits
Their image came a long way in just a year after this. I wonder what their shows where like back in 62

Mike's a clown. Ask any of his EIGHT ex wives.
David was brought in as Al Jardine's replacement while he was in dental school
The Blind Guardian remake is pretty cool too ^^ has aproximately the same sounding to it
They sing as four lads.
oh my gosh people really dance like the Peanut kids and snoopy. wow
David marks
shake mike! LoL
and where can i get those shoes? LoL..
how cute are they?
Did they have any idea how ridiculous they'd look in 5 years?
David Marks' post-BBs material with The Marksmen is actually quite good. He and Pete Best have a lot in common.

Was this the taping of the Steve Allen Show?
Red Skelton show
One more thing--didn't Billy Hinsche (of Dino, Desi & Billy) also play with The Beach Boys for awhile?
gymnastix Yes
that singer looks like my grandfather and the singer of the who in the same person ajaja
Dennis looks weird just standing there like that.
Hey gazwsx12369, I think you made your point about Mike Love, you may be right you may be wrong, but its time to let it go my friend.
Can someone please name them left to right? Thanks.

gymnastic, in the second song, Brian is standing to the left, David Marks is sitting/crouching on the left.

Please don't dance Mike
Dancing too much wasnt really "politically" correct in that time..

But Glen Campbell and Bruce Johnston could have been surfers.
Al Jardine isn't even in the video. Shows how much you know.
