- Brian Wilson originally intended to sing lead vocal on 'God Only Knows' but in the end he sacrificed the lead vocal to his brother Carl: "Well, I thought I was gonna do it. As the song progressed, I said, 'Hey, I feel kind of natural doing this.' But when we completed creating the song, I said my brother Carl will probably be able to impart the message better than I could, so I sacrificed that one. But he had a good time singing it."

One of life's biggest tragedies is the fact that the vast majority of people will remember the beach boys as a band who produced a couple of surfy singles in the 60s, when in fact they made albums of such intense beauty that they made an indelible mark on music history and influenced countless famous artists
To be fair. They were a super successful band. But do not necessarily deserve the same acclaim/reverence that a Stones, James brown or even Ramones deserve. ✌️. Edit. Tragedy? Are we being a bit dramatic?? 🤦
@@newagain9964 Idiotic, ignorant comment.
@@newagain9964Oh but they do
@@lohnjennon4886 that’s a fan boi argument. Thx for the input tho.
Totally aggree 💯👍
Can anyone imagine writing this song, laying down the backing track, singing lead vocal and then being humble enough to pass it on to someone else! No one but Brian Wilson would have made such a sacrifice on what is, in my opinion, the greatest song ever recorded.
What I love about this love song is that it doesn't have to be about a significant other. You can dedicate it to a family member or a friend, or really anybody whose made a positive change in your life.
Really perfect.
Yes! This song reminds me of EVERYONE I have ever loved.
At 54 years old I keep revisiting this track every few years. It is, in my opinion, one of the best songs of its era. The lyrics are honest, the structure of the song is deceptively clever, and the arrangement defies superlatives for its many layers and originality. This track is true genius at work.
I like you
You are now 66 years old.
Absolutely.100 percent
What a genius Brian Wilson was. I hope he's better now. Love this song. Grew up in CA in 50s and 60s, Great time to be there then.
This song and "Don't Worry Baby" are their best songs! Beautiful music!
Love this music brings back the early 80s growing up as a kid thank God for my parents n grandparents they had good taste in music.
This song still gives me goosebumps 45 years after I first heard it.......so good to know that young people are still coming to Brian and The Beach Boys and finding music that is timeless. God bless you, BBs
One of the best songs ever written. My heart lights up whenever I hear this...
The older I get, the more I begin to recognize the genius in their songs
That's you realizing Brian Wilson
Best song ever made!
Carl had perfect pitch and this fact was used throughout the many songs in the long career of the Beach Boys. This song was made to order for him.
Absolutely timeless perfection! Thank you The Beach Boys.
Love all the pictures from the Pet Sounds album. This definitely is Brians voice I think. thanks for all the fantastic photos of the guys loving all those animals. This is the best album they ever did for sure. Thanks for the post here on RUclips.
Does anyone remember this song being exquisitely used in an episode of Wonder Years where it plays as Kevin & Winnie are in separate busses side by side & as they begin their route, Winnie's bus (with her new beau sitting next to her) continuing to go straight as jilted Kevin's bus veers on the road that heads to the right? Saddest ending ever & the perfect song playing in the background! :,(
Is this the most beautiful song ever written?
+Wankshaftsbury Melts my heart every time....
Yes,I think so.
I think so, i can't get through it without crying and neither could paul mccartney even!
Yes
Quite possibly
love beach boys.. still listen to their music. its timeless.
The symphonic rock art of Pet Sounds and Smile is exemplified in part by this timeless, revolutionary masterpiece. A critical opus like those, however, should be listen to as one whole entity, rather than by isolated tracks.
+PetSmile ah take a break! I do both. I respect Brian but sometimes I just want 2 or 3 minutes of a nice song. I think he would not be offended.
+PetSmile great as those albums were,in my opinion,Sunflower was their masterpiece.
Covered by David Bowie in 1984. So, I put that and this in my "Bowie: covers+" playlist. Thanks for uploading!
This song is perhaps one of the best written songs ever, the lyrics are powerful and this has to be considered one of the best love songs ever. Its a unique blend of beautiful lyrics and relaxing beats interupted in places by banging drum patterns. Massive respect to the Beach boys, I will always hold this song with the highest regards
Love Actually brought me here
Block cords and harmonies are the best ever.
Can't get enough of this song... So simple and beautiful
I went to see Brian Wilson and his band 3 days ago, here in South Australia. I am 60 years old, and never thought I would see one of my heros in real life. I LOVE the BeachBoys and I can now die happy that I have seen Brian singing Surfer Girl and all my favourites. The concert was absolutely FANTASTIC, just like listening to the real BeachBoys. Thanks Brian for coming to little old Adelaide. I will NEVER forget it. Love you always XXX
Well, there was a mistake. Carl is singing lead on this version too.
Definitely Brian. The boxed set that it was taken from clearly states that Brian sang lead on this version. You didn't learn much after "years of listening to the Beach Boys".
@@abneryokum You didn't learn much after years
@@bawlsuggg3398 So you know more that whoever wrote the text for the box set? Idiot.
Great chord changes
This whole album is an absolute masterpiece
Brian does a fine job on vocals here and he establishes the phrasing for the subsequent version, but Carl's vocal will always be the definitive one. I'm amazed at how similar their voices were at this point.
Brian voice was actually a bit too assertive here. Carl's was softer and gentler, which was the right call!
A true masterpiece. A song for all ages. Still my all time favorite.
brian is a genius
Oh my!! The waterworks just FLOW when I watch this. So *SO* well done!!! Thank you for the increidible homage to Brian Wilson. This has always been a favourite.
My dad passed away in 2001 when I was 12 years old. The Beach Boys were his favorite band. Whenever I hear one of their songs, I think about my him. I love you Dad!
Brian is singing lead here. I have this on the Pet Sounds Sessions collection, it's called God Only Knows (Brian Sings Lead). He does sound a lot like Carl here, but then Brian had a surprising ability to alter his voice in unusual ways at this point. I'm almost certain he multi-tracked all the parts for I'm Waiting For The Day himself, and there are other instances where he takes over Mike's parts for a few beats.
Amazing comment... especially in the beginning you can clearly hear when you play this against the studio version that this is Brian.
I'm almost sure that there's a demo recorded by Brian on lead but this alternate version is sung by Carl too.
I did a mix of this version and the Carl version, to hear Brian and his brother in a duet, beautiful song! Thank you Brian ! 💚
I've listened to this gem for about 45 years. It just doesn't get any better than this.
@kkellsgreek26 there is still good stuff being written, problem is it's very few and far between now
Few and far between then... Brian is a very rare genius
inspiration for the beatles Pepper enuf said
The Beatles did say that this was one of the best album they had ever heard; they respected The Beach Boys a lot!!
The first time I heard this song on the radio I was 12 years old and I froze in place, stunned by its beauty and perfection. One of the simplest, most seamless pop masterpieces ever penned by one of our generation's true genius pop composers (there are others but none so singular as Brian Wilson). It still stops me dead in my tracks today.
Been listening to Pet Sounds for almost 45 years..Still the best pop record ever written. The pinnacle of Brian's great career. I miss hearing Carl sing it live on stage.
basically, sure, life would still go on, but it would be pointless because she is the best part of it
Wow!
I love the video and all the wonderful pictures of the Beach Boys. How talented and gifted the Wilson brothers were and the wonderful music they were able to write. Thanks for posting all these great pictures from PetSounds. I own the CD and all the lliner notes that I got for Christmas and it is one of the best albums I own. Take care and thanks.
Carl's perfect, soulful, beautiful voice makes this song something extra special.
This is actually Brian singing. The final mix is Carl.
Love it!!! Carl is amazing on this.
R.I.P. Carl and Dennis Wilson....Keep Rockin Brian!!!
im 14 and i have an obsession with the beach boys, this song captures the emotional needs of those who dont know whether to love someone or let them go...thanks for sharing this
I was so touched by the photo of Dennis and Carl together near the end of this clip. Nice job MrTomaX !
wtf. 114 voted this song down? WOW!!! I understand that music, like everything else in life..food, wine, taste in movies is subjective. That being said, just wow. This is one of the most beautiful, harmonious songs ever recorded.
When you have a Beatle say this is the best song he’s ever heard, your doing something right
One of the most beautifully written songs in music history...
When I first bought this album way back in '66, I thought this was one of the "better" songs. Then after listening to Pet Sounds a few more thousand times, I realized this was the best song on the album. Then it became obvious to me that there may NEVER be a more beautiful song! My all time favorite song.
this was teenage pop music of the 1960's this really gives one a glimpse of how great the era of the 1960's were when it came to American Culture!
Man, this is the greatest.
In my humble opinion , this has to be one of the best songs ever written & performed . It is simply wonderful & how anybody can fail to like it is totally beyond my comprehension . Let's be honest , music today , on the whole , is garbage & I can think of nothing that will stand the test of time like this masterpiece has done . Sublime doesn't even begin to desribe this . Thank you Brian Wilson , you are an amazing man .
Your video is so very nice and well done, I love to watch it over and over again, thank you for making this!
When my children were small we lived in a country farmhouse in deepest Lancashire. Without fail I played a transistor radio as I coped with a huge garden. This was a daily task in summer. Always, it seemed, the Beach Boys were singing so I can close my eyes when I play this and I'm hoeing that black rich soil again, picking the runner beans, digging up spuds, and listening to chirping blackbirds, or the stream gurgling by. Bless.
Still amazed amd awed by what composers of the time could produce in two and a half minutes. Brian Wilson is/was a master. GOD ONLY KNOWS is surely a masterpiece of its genre.
"God only knows what i'd be without you..." : guarantee way of making me cry...
I could listen to this and watch this for another 45 years!
One of the most loving songs of the 60's, you rock Beach Boys!
"God Only Knows" my life has been so sad without
you David. It's been years without you.
Probably one of the most pure songs of love put out there.
God only knows....Great stuff!
This IS one of the most beautiful songs--and arrangement ever and I remember clearly the day in summer when i was 10 going on 11 when mum brought the single/record home and put it on the turntable--it blew me away!
one of the greatest songs, melodies ever written
This is a very special song. One of these moments when what is said is not just the person saying it. Thanks so much.
Love the Beach Boys! This song is so beautiful.
When I was little my mom would turn the oldies station on in the car and we would sing anything on.The beach boys songs were the first I was able to memorize when I was about 5. I can honestly say they are the Artists that inspired me to love ALL music, and make it a major part of me that I could never be without. So to the Beach Boys, The Beatles and all the amazing others...God only knows what I'd be without you
I saw this band twice in concert, and this is by far my favorite song by them!!
heard this on a ad....I could be doing revision , eating my dinner , fighting with my brothers but every time I hear this I cant help listening...this is a hella great song...yeah man Beachboys rule
By far, one of the best songs ever recorded -- a masterpiece!
I love those bells in the background or whatever they are called and the flutie sounds at 1:48 and 1:52. Brian wrote his best melodies when he was stoned out of his mind and Carl's vocals are some of the best ever recorded on this song. I've heard this song a gazillion times and my toe still taps every time to this day
So, so great. No wonder there are about 3 1/2 million views. I am glad Brian is dong fairly well now. My aunt used to babysit him, Carl, and Dennis in Hawthorne, when they were small boys.
Millions of people today love this song as millions did 45 years ago. Perfection is
eternal.
la musica sola es para llorar, la voces son un plus a este tema ya celestial...
Wonderful song, I have loved it since I first heard it as a teenager in 1966. It is my all time favourite Beach Boys song.
What a great song, this was put together all in 2 days.. amazing.
"pet sounds"..obra maestra de los beach boys especialmente de brian wilson...en su época de locura!. ( q hombre más genio)...es el disco favorito de mcartney
It was mine and my boyfriend's 1st year Anniversary, long story short, our plans didn't pan out the way we had planned and we ended up getting lost, driving around all day in the middle of nowhere. We were both really bummed that our special day didn't go the way we wanted. On the ride home, I fell asleep. When we got back into town, he pulled into a vacant parking lot by the river. He apologized for such a shitty day, then started this song and we danced in the parking lot under the moonlight.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written. I would have to agree with Brian, the melody and chord progression of this song is unmatched and just flows so well.
I got a tattoo with the name of this song on my arm, it was done after my wonderful Mother was diagnosed with Cancer................ She's still here , thank goodness for that :-)
I was never the biggest BB fan, but some of their songs are just great and I like them more now than I did years ago...this is one of them.
....How could you NOT love this song...I think it's like heaven...
The Beach Boys are truly an American Classic... and this is one of their best if not the best.
I cry. Everytime. I remember the first time I ever heard this, I literally cried all night. I cried just now. It's so honest. There's something about the chords as well. They just hit me. Very sad. Beautiful song.
I saw them at UVA or Wash D.C. back in the early 80's....It is sooo sad to see these pictures of them as just boys...and now we are all old...
GREAT SONG !!! GREAT GROUP...
I’m only 16 years old and this is my fav song ever
Same
I saw Carl perform this song at many Beach Boys concerts. Most definately the highlight of any of the concerts . I miss him greatly.
Truly amazing song....
Carl's version is certainly more tender and spiritual. The introduction to this song is just so warm and gorgeous, with the organ/accordions and the French horns. Gosh it's beautiful!
One of the greatest groups of all time..they made the sixties and seventies rock with good vibrations..
A masterpiece! I cried at the beauty of this song the first time I heard and it still pulls on me when I hear it.
Pet Sounds is my favorite Beach Boys album and this song is one of their very best. A great tune that really defines the feelings of a man for a woman. All the harmony is there and the feeling expressed is so true.
Songs like this prove to me that all the great songs have all been written. The same is true for literature, film, TV, science, philosophy...sigh, am I depressed or what.
In 2000 they had a program naming the top 100 people who influenced music. For some reason the Beach Boys were left out. Their harmonisation is sensational to this day. Their talent put them within the top five influences in my view.
awesome video montage, great work!!!!!!!!!
Probably the best song ever recorded by The Beach Boys. Pure Genius!!!!
My wedding song! Our DJ said it was the first time he'd ever had a Beach Boys song, let alone this one, for a wedding song in his 25 years as a wedding DJ. :-)
Indeed best song ever !
I like the more speedy ones like Surfin USA, Good Vibrations and some others.
one of those songs that will live on forever
as usual outstanding
