Paul McCartney’s favorite song. I just saw Brian Wilson and Al Jardine play Pet Sounds live with their stand-in band in December. Great show! I feel so lucky to have seen Brian play.
@Joshua Marsella : Woah, Paul did not say that. He said it was his favourite BEACH BOYS song specifically. Not his "favourite song". Big difference. Just saying. Cheers :)
I saw Brian sing this on his 2002 Pet Sounds tour in the UK. Afterwards he said "we're lucky to have the man who wrote the lyrics to God only Knows here tonight - Tony Asher", little did I know he had been sitting in the seat in front of me throughout the gig! He stood up to rapturous applause and I jumped up and gave him a hug and said something like "thanks for writing this masterpiece" - I was completely choked up, an unforgeable moment for me
Thanks so much for giving credit to Carl Wilson for his sweet, tender lead vocal on "God Only Knows." So many discussions of this Beach Boys classic have either barely mentioned Carl's contribution or not even mentioned it at all.
I'm so glad you did a beach boys video! I've been revisiting my teenage obsession with those sounds lately over like two weeks, and this was truly perfect timing! Great channel. Great content. Also, great original music!!
I remember listing to this song for the first time. I didn’t know anything about it, but immediately was in awe of how good it was. Then later found out that I wasn’t the only one that felt that way.
I first heard this song, on a beach in Cornwall, England, in August 1966,a girl was walking past with her transistor radio playing this song, it even for a few seconds sounded wonderful and I had to find out who was singing it!
Thank you for finding the Paul McCartney quotes on the Beach Boys and specifically, God Only Knows, I have been trying to prove for years that the Beach Boys influenced the Beatles but my family simply will not listen.
I adore this song and have sung it, not as well, at many a wedding for friends getting married when I was younger. I think, once you get married yourself, or find your partner, the lyrics take on a whole new meaning. Love the BBC version, with singers, artists from everywhere (including Brian Wilson) taking on a bar or 2 then moving on to the next, thanking BBC for having supported them. I am so impressed that while many of us might say "Eleanor Rigby" or "Blackbird" are 2 of the most amazing songs ever....done by the Beatles, Paul McCartney, humbly, proclaims a Beach Boys song to be the best. I'm impressed. A gr8 song and covered so often by great artists.
Great video, incredible song. It has the same effect on me as it does on Paul Mc. I literally just tear up every time I hear it. It's like nothing else. It's a magical chord structure and melody that it so different ,..... I can't put it into words. Love it though.
Good job Mr. Hobs. Great video about a great song. My favorite by them is their pocket symphony Good Vibrations. Which may make a great video on some future date or in some other timeline in another universe. Where I'm sure it's already happened. lol
pet sounds was an answer to rubber soul (beatles) pet sounds had the avantage that in usa they used "8 track" recorders since the 1950"S,,lucky then that when the beatles got 4 tracks that helped them make sgt peppers...as a multy track recorder myself since 1988 i can tell you that makes a massive difference
Such a wonderful wonderful song. The lyric is amazing, the melody and the chord progression....God, I have no idea how Brian can came up with that kind of melody and chord progression, and I can imagine he was not trying to do some kind of "Progressive rock song", but just a tried to put a wonderful song, with a wonderful lyric, and wonderful melodies....
Bruce is conspicuously absent from the "Pet Sounds" cover, and for a very good reason: he was under contract to Columbia Records, whereas his fellow Beach Boys were under contract to Capitol Records (which was part of EMI at the time).
Another underrated singer songwriter I discovered from England that lately just blew me away Paul Carrak. Unbelievably talented was in a multitude of famous groups wrote incredible songs even asked by members of the eagles to form a group with them after a few members dropped out . I cant say enough about Paul dont know how I missed out on this talented singer songwriter. A member of squeeze mike and the mechanics and other groups as well.
They do say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but I doubt he would a) he wouldn't think he had much to offer that would improve the vocal of Carl Wilson, and b) when you've found perfection you acknowledge it, you don't mess with it. Has anyone the temerity to record a new arrangement of Comfortably Numb or Bohemian Rhapsody? Not seriously, only in parody.
There concept of God seems a lot loke the Catholic mystics like some of the unusual people they call Saints I often find myself singing this song. I think it is so awsome that they would pray to make the most healing sounds. The Beach boys were a beautiful bunch of guys . And yes that includes Mike Love.
I agree only because it obviously blew apart after Good Vibrations due to Brian's mental trouble. Had Brian been able to get real help, and complete Smile as he wanted it I think they would both be equal. The Beach Boys should have probably called it quits after Holland or Surf's Up (I can't remember which came last) instead of continuing on. That's what ruined their reputation.
One minor correction. John Lennon did not rush off with Paul McCartney to write Here There and Everywhere. That song is 100% Paul McCartney and one of the few songs that Lennon ever publicly complimented Paul on.
I've got to admit, I don't get the praise about God Only Knows. Certainly, its a good song with my favorite part being the harmony section in the middle. But I don't comprehend the "greatest song ever written" idea even if Paul McCartney praised it. Of course, there is a "madness of crowds" phenomenon when speaking about Brian Wilson and mindlessly uttering the phrase "Brian is a musical genius." Brian had a great run from 1963 to 1966/67 but after that, only the most ardent BB/Brian Wilson fan can name one song of his. And of course, there is the fashionable stance of saying "Pet Sounds is the greatest album ever made," which is nonsense because it isn't even the best Beach Boys album ever made. I think there is a lot of groupthink with this particular subject.
I love that McCartney and Brian fid the song together....but I was a little disappointed in the performance....and it appeared that there wasn't much preparation.
OK, sorry to get biblical here, but; Rubber Soul begat Pet Sounds. Pet Sounds begat Sgt Pepper. Sgt Pepper begat The Smile album. Hateful Mikey aborted Smile! (I've got well over 100 first cousins, NONE of them as bad as Mikey "love.") steve
I don’t understand the comparison of The Beatles to The Stones. The Beatles & The Beach Boys are far more similar musically. The Stones really weren’t anything special musically, they were a rock & roll band that played R&B real fast and real loose. Sure, they innovated the blues and had a huge hand in the hard rock that followed, but musically they were fairly average. The Beach Boys are the only band that comes close to The Beatles. The Stones were musicians, Lennon/McCartney and Brian Wilson were composers.
When is anyone going to start telling the WHOLE truth - Paul "blew his mind out in a car" 1966 and should have ended the Beatles but a studio guitarist named Billy Shears took Paul's place and the rest is history. The NEW Fab Four never toured or played together on stage in public because Billy was so much taller than Paul, Sgt. Pepper Album show Paul's funeral. You won't believe how many other people and NOT who you think they are.
You read the lyrics. Pretty lame actually. And "God Only Knows" itself is a statement that has been around for ages. He needed even more help with the lyrics. Chord structure is another subject
Indeed, God Only Knows is the best song ever written, being the centerpiece of Pet Sounds, which is absolutely the greatest album that has ever been made. 💚💛🤍🖤
Paul McCartney’s favorite song. I just saw Brian Wilson and Al Jardine play Pet Sounds live with their stand-in band in December. Great show! I feel so lucky to have seen Brian play.
I saw them too (but last November)… And yes, it was an awesome show!!! :)
That’s amazing, I’m gonna go to California next year to see them live in September
@Joshua Marsella : Woah, Paul did not say that.
He said it was his favourite BEACH BOYS song specifically. Not his "favourite song".
Big difference. Just saying.

@@danielpujol8266 oooh okay! I must have misheard then. Thanks for the correction! 😁
One of the best songs ever written!!!!!
In my opinion the best. It has the perfect amount of tension in its chord progression.
I saw Brian sing this on his 2002 Pet Sounds tour in the UK. I just love the Beach Boys and I am a great fan of theirs and they are one of my favorite bands in the sixties.
I love it too
the music of the beach boys...encapsulated a fantastic time..of joy and innocence....will we ever see it again?
It is a beautiful song, sung by a beautiful voice.
YES! The Beach Boys are so underrated. They’re a great band that need more recognition! Great video
Theyre literally one of the most famous bands ever
@smashbound0763 Yeah really; where the hell have you been..??
Underrated...feh...
I'm thinking these people that keep posting "underated", are just trolls in their moms' basement....having a butt head contest with their friends
God only knows where we'd be without you. Thanks for what you so well.
I first heard this song, on a beach in Cornwall, England, in August 1966,a girl was walking past with her transistor radio playing this song, it even for a few seconds sounded wonderful and I had to find out who was singing it!
damn near impossible to play. Pure genius.
Thank you for finding the Paul McCartney quotes on the Beach Boys and specifically, God Only Knows, I have been trying to prove for years that the Beach Boys influenced the Beatles but my family simply will not listen.
"Favorite Beach Boys song of all time" NOT favorite song of all time...
I legit found this song yesterday, after years! And you upload this?? WHAT!

Lovely story about Paul McCartney breaking down while singing this song with Brian Wilson. Thanks for telling it.
God only knows... Hal Blaine, amazing drummer.
I love watching love and mercy on DVD it actually shows how Brian Wilson grew up and all the obstacles he came up against
Thank you. Really enjoyed learning about this song.
ONE of the greatest songs ever written, its all in whom your asking...
As an accordion player, I love how one of the iconic pop/rock songs of all time has accordions as a prominent part of the musical landscape.

Great song review!! I remember in my early teen years listening to Beach Boys record and thinking: "Wow...the Beach Boys are incredible musicians"
Such a wonderful wonderful song. Interesting about how they prayed for light and guidance to make the most healing sounds. We need to get more rap artists to do this.
Their prayer was certainly answered.
Amen dude
Not a better way to start my tired morning by watching your videos :)
Oohhh now we're getting somewhere Holly. Great video
I love this song, love this video- great narrative!! Thanks!! 🤗
My favorite song by far
Didn't like the Beach Boys until I seen Love & Mercy. That movie gave me a new found respect for the band, especially, Brian Wilson.
A love song that begins with the lyric, ‘I may not always love you..’
Thank you for sharing this story.
For me, Brian's pivotal change in writing begins with side 2 of Today, but really takes hold with Let Him Run Wild on Summer Days.
One of the greatest Love songs ever bought to tape
Glenn Campbell went on the BB Japanese tour in Brian's place.
The beach chads
Great biographical discussion! Thank you!
Bruce is conspicuously absent from the "Pet Sounds" cover, and for a very good reason: he was under contract to Columbia Records, whereas his fellow Beach Boys were under contract to Capitol Records (which was part of EMI at the time).
how could Paul and John write "here there and everywhere" after listening to an album that was inspired by Revolver?
How black sabbath made Iron Man. Make that one

Paul McCartney should record his own version of God Only Knows.
They do say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but I doubt he would a) he wouldn't think he had much to offer that would improve the vocal of Carl Wilson, and b) when you've found perfection you acknowledge it, you don't mess with it. No offense but that’s really sad...

Great, under-appreciated song.
Paul McCartney was 100% absolutely right ~ The best song ever written ~ I too have too had tears when hearing it ~

How Brian Wilson made God Only Knows
Paul McCartney loves this song it is one of his favorite.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing ❤
Thanks for another great video!
This so good to be able to be part of as a listener and lover music and God
please do more Beach Boys videos
As if Paul felt as if he could select anything from his catalog
Great video, though shame you didn’t include any of the track in the video (even within the terms of fair use).
3:50 LOL a concept bigger than God.

Overrated band. Higly overrated.
A very overrated band. In on word .... CRAP, except God Only Knws
@@PeKe999 Woah ok buddy how about you hop off the Beatles and discover bands that are as good or better than them. Overrated my ass, Jesus.

Brian Wilson was a musical genius. Lennon and McCartney were writers of advertising jingles
That is simply an ignorant comment.
One minor correction.
John Lennon did not rush off with Paul McCartney to write Here There and Everywhere.
That song is 100% Paul McCartney and one of the few songs that Lennon ever publicly complimented Paul on.
Did Carol Kaye play Bass on this? Or guitar?
Paul McCarthy said it was his favorite Beach Boy song, not his favorite song.
Can u do a video about Oasis and the band being highly influence by the Beatles?
Binge watch time now for BIG LOVE
Would have been nice to play the song.
Actually, Dennis was slated to sing “God Only Knows,” but he had a cold when it was time to record.
That’s good vibrations
Wow. A mistake in the first 30 seconds. McCartney said, it was the best LOVE song ever written, not the best song. :)
