There's a reason nobody tried to cover Roy's songs; nobody could match, or even approach his voice. The range, the beautiful tone, the strength, and the sadness was totally unique. I was 13 when I heard him for the first time on Ed Sullivan singing 'Pretty Woman' in 1964. Have not heard a voice to compare since. But it was more than just the voice. He sang love stories and the heart he put into them made them epics. He had a difficult life despite his talent. I hope he's found peace, and I hope he knows how much he meant to so many.

The unexpected twists and turns of chords and numbers of beats, the completely non-standard unconventional construction of the verses... no A-B-A-B-Middle 8-Chorus-Repeat for Roy Orbison. This song is stunning in its beauty and structure. That voice, those songs, and he was always such a kind gentleman -- beauty, integrity, elegance and power in motion.

I am now 66, I saw the Beatles Live and Roy Orbison was on the same bill, I was so anxious to see the Beatles all the other acts were just delays as far as I was concerned. I watched Top of the Pops every week and when Roy Orbison was on my attention was diverted elsewhere. Bottom line I never cared for him. When I was in my 30s I found a cassette ( yup ) of Roy's greatest hits, I threw it on for a laugh, from the very first note I was mesmerized !!! the sound of his voice, his delivery the arrangements just fantastic. Then there were those lyrics, WOW !!!!!!I am not ashamed to say I cried during a couple of songs that catapulted me back in time to some bad decisions I made and how I hurt a few people. Roy Orbison you are one of the greatest voices in the world. Thank You ( sorry if this was too long)

You know, it must have been surreal, but back in the day, Orbison was touring with the Beatles!!! Their music styles are so completely different, I just can't imagine the same audience listening to Orbison and the Beatles in the same venue.. Roy said, when the Beatles performed you couldn't hear them because of the screaming and hysteria and he just thought what's the point of that.. but when he sang, you could hear a pin drop and then he got applaud after. Roy said as he got more famous and was performing to thousands and some of the girls began screaming and wanting to touch and grab him from the edge of the stage and after the show, that scared him. He wasn't that kind of entertainer.
I remember Roy told of his first encounter with the Beatles when he was pushed into touring with them in USA.. he had no idea who they were. And in the venue they had put cardboard cut-outs of the Beatles logo and faces etc where Roy had to rehearse..and he said move all this stuff off the stage....what the hell's a beatle anyway?? John tapped him on the shoulder and said, I'm one. lol

Paul and Ancila .........quite right. Fast-forward to when Roy was with The Traveling Wilburys, another “Beatle” George Harrison remarked how incredibly difficult it was to even concentrate when a man with such an incredible voice was alongside him. George said Roy’s voice gave him “chills”. It’s nothing short of astonishing to think this performance was only a little over a year before Roy died, imo, his voice was better than ever!

Roy Orbison is the anti-modern singer. He didn't need rely on a flashy stage show, auto tuning, over mixing, a raucous lifestyle to make headlines. He was quite simply, yet so supremely...a voice. A voice that alone stirs, still today, so many souls. Mine included. And I think that's exactly how he preferred it to be. Just a man, some lyrics scribbled by his broken heart and that voice that leaves us all a little better off in life, for having been graced by it. Imagine how excited the choirs of angels were when our dear Roy joined them that day. We all love you Roy and gratefully keep your memory alive today. Thank God for Roy Orbison and his gift to us.

He wrote it after his wife Claudette cheated on him while he was away on tour. They divorced but remarried a few years later. Then she died in a motorcycle accident and it really was over!

@@CB-xr1eg Thanks for that. I didn't know about Claudette's being unfaithful or the divorce; it tends not to be mentioned in the film bios shown on TV. It's understandable that, with her husband away for such long periods and cut off from the family, she might look for solace elsewhere.

it's 1960 - I'm 11 yrs old with a small transistor radio, living in Vegas - listening and singing to, crying to, smiling to, memorizing and being mesmerized by this golden voice - that was over 50 yrs ago and he's my "go to" listening just because - I didn't know what a broken heart was nor had I been in or out of love yet - but just one of those people who I connected with entirely because of the beauty of his songs and voice.

Roy Orbison sang abut the great mystery of love where there is no solution, there is only eternal hope. His songs take us into a room and we hear the thrill and threat of the mystery in the dark where nothing is seen and everything is revealed.

The guitar player, in the white jacket, over Roy Orbison's right shoulder is James Burton, a member of the Rock and Roll HOF and is really, really good. Pull up 'Blue Angel' from Black and White Night and key in on his play.
