There's also the comic strip (drawn by Tove and her brother Lars), my favourite being "Moomin and aunt Jane" where they send Aunt Jane a chest full of swear words because they don't like her.
As I'm finnish I have been exposed to the Moomins basically my whole life, either through books or through the TV shows and this video made me appreciate them just a little more! Also very well made video hope you keep this up.
Snuffkin was always someone who fascinated me, watching the show. I only had one VHS of the show, and that was the episode/movie where a jungle was planted around the house. I would watch this casette religiously as I was growing up, often rewatching and skipping around to scenes that had Snuffkin involved, speaking or teaching the trolls. He was never frightened, but approached every situation with a kind of assured caution, that told of his life experience and the wisdom he had gained from this life. I like to think that he influences me even now.
That's an excellent comparison. I never grew up with these characters, in fact I JUST discovered them mere weeks ago--and I REEEALLY wish I HAD grown up with them!!!!
I feel the same way it's a real shame the Moomins didn't come to the U.S. especially the 1990 anime which could have aired on the Disney channel or Nick Jr since it has a English dub
I’m not sure why but the atmosphere in this video made me tear up a bit. Moomin’s means a lot to me and hearing that Tove didn’t see Moomin Valley as happy anymore broke my heart. As a creator inspired by moomins, I found it really touching and it made my day to see a well spoken and beautiful video about Moomin. Thanks man, keep up the wonderful content.
I mean Yes but actually no, while Finland isn't technically Scandinavia, it's still pretty much the closest buddy to Scandinavia and it has a lot of the same culture, while still during their own thing. In short Finland is to Scandinavia what Snufkin is to the Moomin family.
I visited Finland a couple summers ago, and one thing I couldn’t help but notice is that these moomin characters are *E V E R Y W H E R E!* including merchandise in the supermarket… the closest US equivalent I can think of would be Snoopy, but he ain’t even *that* popular in the US…
I spent most of the time staying with my friend and her Grandparents in a town called Kalajoki, but we’d also go to Ylivieska and probably also Alavieska. I’m pretty sure I saw a little moomin shop in the Helsinki airport as well.
@@iridescentaurora268 Weird. :D I only notice them if I go looking out for them. Even then, they aren't that prevalent. Maybe it was a little different a couple summers ago as there was a movie released around that time.
i'm 13, living in croatia. as a child, i would watch the 90's anime on tv in like 2010. these last 10 years i've only remembered fragments, like how snufkin and moomin looked, not even remembering the name of the show lol. the scene that left the biggest impression was a scene from the intro, where moomin was flying on the pink cloud. i never knew about the books or about tove lmao, seeing as after probably 2012 i completely forgot about it except for a few things, only recently when i heard moomin and saw snufkin on the title and thumbnail of a video, i just kinda remembered lol
I just finished writing a report in school about Tove Jansson. I'm so fascinated by her. Tove created something huge and I absolutely love her. This was such a great analysis, thank you for making this video.
the moomins has started to boom on tumblr and thats how i discovered it. I always loved the animated mini series over the garden wall and always craved for something similar. Moomins is the original to that whimsical yet haunting atmosphere i love dearly. Im glad ive gotten into it as well as many others the past few months since the new 3d animated show came out.
It makes me very sad that I never grew up with the Moomins, but I plan on buying the books and watching the 90s anime soon. The rich history of the characters and the author herself draws me in so deeply.
This show holds such a warm place in my heart. I knew nothing of the moomins until I met my best friend and now I've watched the 90s show and I'm watching Moominvalley too. It's such a soft and calming show to watch and it comes with so many very real and adult subjects being tackled in a child friendly way. I can't not fall in love with it
You did it very well! Thorough with proper respect! Thank you very much! You mentioned the moomin world / house @ 12:25, and as a little side-note many of the children's playhouses in Finland are moominhouses. They are scattered here and there, as you travel about...
There is a museum for Toves moomin art at Tampere Finland, this art includes many large and detailed miniatures made by Tove with her friends including a massive Moomin House. Glad you like this important part of my culture
I couldn't help to drop a few tears whilst watching this video. Being a Finn, moomins or as you call them in Finland ''Muumit'' are a huge part of everybodys childhood, even my mother who is over 50 years old is still obsessed with moomins and I think while every Finn thinks of their perfect summer day, and when they describe happiness they bring up moomins. I feel honored as a Finn to be somewhat a part of this story and culture, and feel so proud so many people around the world enjoy something that means so much to any Finnish person on earth. Thank you for making this!
There is something about this video that is just so calming. I don't know if it's the voice, the music or the video's theme, but I just find myself relaxed after watching this. Extremely nice.
Jesus. I only saw Moomins a few times as a kid but it's also a memory that somehow managed to stick with me. Didn't know there was so much history behind it. Nice video! You deserve way more recognition!
I only recently found myself obsessed with the Moomins as I never grew up with them, though it feels so strangely familiar and comfortable. I'm completely enamoured with mostly Tove Jansson's art. I love this video simply because it perfectly describes the exact feeling and emotion the Moomins series has; it's special to so many people, and I feel that your voice and commentary perfectly fits the tender and wholesome history of the Moomins.
Back before i started school my siblings and i used to watch vcr cassettes of the moomin episodes. The cassetes degraded after more use and the episodes became stuttering and always with a constant humming sound in the background. We had a "day mom" we stayed with during work hours, this old ladies apartment furniture looked just like something from the moomin universe. Vintage phone with gold handle and a marble base, vintage vacuum cleaner and a bunch of old toys none of us had ever seen back then, a small parakeet was also there. The whole apartment was a window back in time, very surreal. And it made the memories of the moomin episodes even more vivid.
i didn't watch moomin a real lot as a kid, but i watched it sometimes when my family would live in a cottage on summers, and there weren't many other channels there i remember the intro and how thick everyone's finnish accent was, and snufkin was always my favorite
For a year now I've been really unmotivated to draw. I've just lost that passion and barely ever draw anymore. I was unproductive, I waste my time in RUclips watching random things, that even that gets extremely boring at times. I was pretty down in the dumps, trying to find something to entertain myself. But deep down I was probably trying to desperately find that one thing dear to me, which was my love and passion for art. I was so very close to completely giving up on drawing but this show saved me at the very last moment. Like any normal day I happen to stumble upon Moomins. At first I didn't pay any mind. But recommendations kept pilling in, so I checked one video out. At first it didn't strike me as much. But RUclips kept on suggesting more content of Moomins. I watched them, and slowly I grew way more fond of it. Everything about the characters, the story, it drew me in. I gathered every information I could for this show, I started reading the books, I started watching the animated series. And that's when I finally found it once more, my deep love for art. I forgot how fun it was to draw. For once I wasn't forcing myself to draw something, I was actually enjoying each stroke I make with my pen. So really I have to thank this wonderful show for cheering me up and giving me the motivation I desperately needed, Moomins may not be my childhood but it surely gave me hope. Thank you Tove Jansson for creating this wonderful story.
lovely story. i used to read them to my classes in Australia. Because the text is longer and less shaped than contemporary fiction I used to supply photocopies of the illustations to kids so those whose concentration span wasn't up to a whole chapter of listening could sketch with 6B Pencils. it was a good measure for me. when tnose pencils stopped I knew I was on a winning bit!
WOOOOOOOOOW. It's INCREDIBLE to see what an impact her characters had! And still are having! Imagine seeing characters you created on the side of an AIRPLANE?!?? Becoming basically a representative of your entire country?! I hope she enjoyed writing the books and the characters even though it seemed to have ended sadly.....I'm heartbroken about that....
My mother would collect Moomin ceramics since I was young. The series gives me happy memories. I love that Tove wanted to create something that is peaceful, family oriented, and respects nature. Her illustrations also fit very well. This series is a treasure.
Ah, this made me actually tear up a little. What a great atmosphere, melancholic yet peacefully nostalgic. I remember being absolutely smitten with Tove's illustrated world ever since my grandmother read me "Småtrollen och den stora översvämningen" (the great flood) before bed. Seeing a lot of moomin-related stuff pop up everywhere lately and it brings me so much joy. (':
Now I want to read the books! I’ve always remembered these with a haze, back when I was in a different country. Thank you for helping me better remember what they are.
Ah, i love the moomins. When I was younger I watched the moomins everyday. We had every episode recorded and I watched all of them multiple times. My dad read me and my sister the books at bedtime. I'm happy to see other people outside of finland appreciate moomins.
I'm Swedish and grew up with the Moomin family. To see how popular they are even outside of Scandinavia warms my heart. I saw a Moomin exhibition in London a few years ago where they talked about how the events of the books are actually pretty closely linked to the war, which I found so interesting and just gave the books an extra layer that would make it interesting to adults. Loved your video btw!
Nicely done, thank you for sharing. I discovered the Moomins as a child in England in the early 1970s. Was immediately enamored of them and the books. My parents bought me a stuffed snork maiden (bright pink with blonde bangs), which I still have. Read most of the books then. Rediscovered them with my daughter a few years ago, as I read them to her. What impressed me was the loyalty and generosity of the family members - the Moomin family and the variety of creatures they welcomed as their own. The books show us respect for different types, caring for others, helping others, the meaning and value of friendship, the importance of family. There is much warmth in these stories, much rejoicing, but also melancholy, sadness, loneliness. We love the Moomins and their friends because they are just like us - each character has flaws, and each has traits we admire. Like the books, your video made me smile with a tear or two in my eye.
When I was a child I loved the Moomins so much, that my mom almost called me her little "Moomin". She still does that. Even if I dont remember much from this show. So seeing this video meant a lot for me.
I'm so incredibly humbled that you listened to my small bit of advice Sty. Your choice of music was perfect, and the atmosphere of this video is beautiful and somber. Your ability to tell a story is truly incredible my friend. I very much look forward to your future on RUclips.
hearing you talk about the nostalgic values of moomins, even if for you it was such a small thing to happen, makes me so damn happy. it's rare at all that i'll find someone that has such a connecting mentality to the moomins. i first watched the fuzzy felt moomins when i was about 7 years old [about 12 years ago]. i only had one dvd of it, and it was the 5th volume so it was in the middle of the series, and even from that, it's probably a franchise that i'm the most thankful for and one that i'll never forget. as of the past five years i've researched way more about it, watched more of the shows, read the books, draw plenty of art of it, even the character of snufkin inspired me to learn to play more instruments, and the origins of the series itself made me wanna study finnish. there's something so unique and comforting about the series, it always makes me feel complete. and watching this, i just feel glad someone can think or feel a similar way.
The Polish Moomins were fantastic. I watched them as a child in the early 2000's and never thought of them as too old or anything like that purely thanks to the absolutely mesmerizing storytelling. This video was absolutely fantastic.
Im finnish and i have been surrounded by the moomin stories for as long as i have been alive. All of my memories having the books read to me and later on watching the animated series every weekend, is that it was menacing but also somehow comforting and giving you that feeling that you cant stop watching, im pretty sure almost all of it flew over my head, but i have never since found anything that would give that feeling.
I like this style of videos a lot. I loved the moomins when I was a little girl because my aunt who lived in Finland at the time would send me so many toys and a few books about them.
I grew up with moomins as any other finnish person. The special thing is, as I grew older, the stories and the tv show didn't start to feel childish. They just got deeper and meaningful, like a poem that you only understand when you start to analyse it and reflect your own experiences to it. Moomins have a way of describing certain feelings like for example silent happiness or the beauty of melancholy unlike anything else I've seen. There are many people who have a tattoo from moomins too. Definetly something that speaks to you both as an adult and as a child. Great job with the video, you have a soothing voice and I learned some new things too.
The video is well done. I don't really know why but youtube is suddenly shoving moomin in my face everyday now. I had no idea it existed until about three days ago. That's why I'm here. I was looking for an explanation of what it is. I'm not complaining. It seems interesting.
"Starting in 1959 with the German television show "die Moomin family" skdjfhsdfsd noooo xD Sorry, but since you pronounced this in English, it gives off a very wrong vibe. "Die Mumin-Familie" simply means "the Moomin family", for anyone who might be concerned. It's not supposed to be pronounced the same way as the English "die" in any case. ;D
moomins were very popular in poland i remember that every over 40-year old person is refering to moonins as the best thing they ever saw as a child i persolally loved snuffkin and hatifnats...
Soviets has also made few shorts and full length cartoons. Some of them was too much "optimized" to fit in soviet lifestyle, and too silly and goofy. But the full length one, with stop-motion puppets, based on Comet book, was actually made really well. Like it was so atmospheric(even kinda depressing), good animation, and music, story just follows the original…
Even though the Moomins are obscure in the states, Walt Disney was once going to try to buy the rights to them. I can imagine they would have been as popular in the states if that had happened. I still think that the Moomins are to the Finnish and Scandinavia is what Pooh is to America. Even though if you get into the gist of things, before Disney brought over the story it was relatively unknown. But just imagine Disney's The Moomins, even though probably Snufkin would dislike the consumerism side of the company.
As someone who's watched the 90's show and read the books in their original language my entire life, this video was neat and well made, despite coming into the subject matter from a very different angle. Minor nitpick: Tove is pronounced Too-veh. Apart from the difference between the often philosophical books and the family-friendly show is how different they both are to the utterly mad comics. References to crime, alcohol and politics abound, and the characters will frequently display completely anarchic or violent behaviour. The shot from the 69' show doesn't seem as bizarre when compared to the comics.
i find it amazing, but also sad how creating the series allowed her to find some kind of happiness during the war, but couldn't make her happy when her parents died. i loved the series for what it was, but i love it so much more now that i heard tove jansson's life story and the ideas behind everything. this video was beautiful. thank you for it
I visited the moonin park in japan. It’s well done with much to see about the life of the author the development of moomin over her lifetime. I really enjoyed your video as well. Great job.
Really great narrative on the timeline of the Moomins. As a Finn Moomins have always been part of my life and I’m so happy that more people are discovering and loving them as I do.
STYNET of course! Thank YOU for doing justice to the Moomins and taking the time to learn about them after recalling the intro song from one morning in your childhood.
oh man this videos so good it made me cry, i didnt grow up with the moomins but ive been watching the show bc of how popular its been getting cus of the new one being made its so beautiful how these little guys never fail to make me smile :D
I remember watching the moomins as a child at my grandparents place, that house had many bad memories for me but the time I used to watch the moomins there were happy ones.
Its so strange. I only discovered the Moomins a couple days ago but it feels like these characters have been with me my whole life. The characters resonate with me and my beliefs and how I feel about family. I hope someday my art can be recognized and cherished just like this beautiful masterwork. I’ve just started watching the show, but I hope to read books as well!
Thank you so much for this video! I'm a finn and i still learned a lot from it. I myself also have a lot of memories of being at home sick or during the weekends, eating apple slices my mom cut for me and watching moomins. Times to look back to, peaceful times, good times.
Great video! There was new information for me. Moomins were my favourite show when I was a child. I remember so many days when I was sick and just binge watched moomins from VHS under a blanket with cup of tea. Still in my adult days I watch moomins sometimes. So much nostalgy. It's very popular thing here in Finland to collect moomin mugs and its very usual to get them/give them as a gift. PS. I've learned few Snufkin songs with harmonica. Good to play on the campfire on the shore of a lake in the wilderness. I guess im kinda snufkin myself too.
The RUclips algorithm finally recommended something watchworthy? Colour me pleasantly surprised! I'm half Finnish, and the Moomins were extremely dear to me growing up. I still remember the lyrics to the 1990 anime, both Swedish and Finnish actually, and I doubt I will ever forget the words. Thank you for creating this hauntingly beautiful, nostalgic, and emotionally packed video. You've earned yourself a new subscriber.
This was a lovely video. Just out of curiosity, why did you not discuss Jansson's sexuality? Being gay at a time when homosexuality was not only illegal in Finland but also classified as a mental illness, Jansson bravely wrote her sexuality into her work. in Finn Family Moomintroll the couple of Thingamy and Bob are personifications of herself and an early lover, Vivica Bandler. Two near identical creatures, utterly inseparable from each other. Meanwhile the Groke is a figure of loneliness, in contrast to the companionship of Thingamy and Bob. In fact in Moominland Midwinter, it's Too-ticky (another character based on Jansson's partner, Tuulikki Pietila) who points out that that the Groke is pitiable - that a life untouched by love is a sad, empty thing.
I actually don’t know, I was aware of it and that I should have inserted something about it in the video and for some reason I didn’t, I guess I didn’t know how I could shoehorn it in, there was quite a lot I left out but I do agree that her sexuality was something very important and I should have addressed it
I don't think ones sexuality is such big of a deal to include in a moomin video. Big thanks Stynet for a great video! It had a sad tone in the end.. quite beautiful in a way actually. One could sense how important moomins are to you, I can relate.
"Ei muumitaloa lukita yöksi. Hei muuuuuumit..." Can still remember parts of the intro the show even though I haven't seen it since like 9th grade when we watched a couple episodes in school as a little nostalgia trip since that's where basic education ends and you move on to sixth form or vocational school. I watched this show so much as a kid and I loved it. Though I was a shit scared of Mörkö (whose English name I do not know) Oh the memories. Great video!
This was a very pleasing video... I first read the Moomin books 35 years ago and I still reread them today. You definitely captured the spirit of the stories. The tales are straightforward but they conceal a rich and sometimes aching emotional landscape, like deep snow softening the shapes of the forest.
Used to love the show as a kid. Now, having children of my own, I've started reading the books to the them and we regularly watch the old episodes of the Japanese Moomins on RUclips ;) They absolutely love it ;)
I grew up being read the moomin books but only recently heard about any of the adaptations. Love the atmosphere and I'm glad other people are being drawn to the magical world. I've actually been planning to get a snufkin tattoo for a while now lol
I've never heard of Moomins until a few days ago, but it seems so appealing. I've been dealing with what I strongly believe to be depression, so I find things with a lighthearted and hopeful nature very attractive. Maybe I'll give it a shot.
Fantastic, i to remember the early saturday mornings watching the moomins. I have even been to moomin village in Finland with my mother, it is short boat ride across the waters for us Swedes.
I watched the Moomins the other night on Amazon prime, it was about this scary creature that wanted his suitcase back from some travelers that were staying with the Moomins. It was rather surreal and a bit dark.
This has been a nostalgic journey for me. I grew up with Moomin on tv, in fa,ct it was translated into my mother language, Afrikaans. As a child, I then made sure to read every Moomin book. Thanks for bringing e back to that magic. Your docu is soul food to me.
This video was so beautiful and touching! You have a very soothing and beautiful voice and your editing style is unique and beautiful as well as the script writhing!
Lately I've been seeing a lot of Moomin content on Tumblr outta the blue and I've suddenly become very pleased at the sight of Snufkin. I've never seen the shows or read the books, but from what I've seen he's a really great character.
My man that was so beautiful! I am definitely going to see how to obtain these books after watching this, had never heard of Moomins at all here in USA.
As a Swedish person with a Finnish dad, the Moomins has a Giant a place in my heart. And my favorite character has long been the Muddler. (A character from moomin pappas memoirs)
This video is beautiful and a brilliant introduction to Moomins and the introduction always gives me goosebumps. I recently found out about them and immediately fell in love and have been reading/watching everything I can get my hands on. Moomins, particularly the 1990s adaptation in my opinion, just has such a sincere, wholesome feel to it; it drips with a sense of adventurous childishness full of openness and curiousity but absent the patronizing touch that often accompanies such things.
Interesting video! The Moomins are somewhat mysterious to me. When I was a child, I saw some episodes of the 1990s TV series and also read one of the books. That said, I'm not sure I have any recollection what the story was about or who the characters are! I am inspired by this style quite a bit when illustrating. Thanks for tying up my collection of loose, nostalgic memories :)
Thank you so, so much for this video! As a swede the picture books (for example Who will comfort Toffle) where a big part of my childhood, and then when I was a teenager I read the novels (which embarassed me since they are children's books but I did anyways since they are so good)
I was lucky. One my first reading experiences back in 1971-73 were Mumin books. I still love everything about them and I still read them. Thank you Tove!
Thank you for this. I've always been curious about the moomins but never saw any of the shows and didn't even know about the books! I'm excited to check out the books and the shows now. Great music and editing and use of reference material. How you talked the moomins made them much more interesting to me than they already were. Thank you thank you!
Wow what a retrospective. I was never really a Moomin kid so to speak but I have vague memories of watching a Moomin Cartoon which I believe I had on VHS back then. I think it was the 90's anime but I could be wrong. Then again in Denmark where I live, the Moomintrolls are well known, but not nearly as famous as in Finland and Sweden. Still the Moomins in general is one of the most Nordic things you could imagine, in every way including the tone and style of the many adaptations.
I hail from Darjeeling India, (for those of you don't know Darjeeling is a land of Gorkhas sharing borders with neighbouring country Nepal. I' remember I used to have amazing Saturday mornings watching Moomins dubbed in Nepali. Unbelievable how such a serie could reach across places far and wide and still garner the same awe and nostalgia it delivers to you too who's reading this
i am Australian. my brother is 7 years younger than me and it was in his childhod the Moomins became popular here via Puffin Childrens books in paperback form . We loved them. The characters the illustration and utterly exotic location!
Your voice is really wonderful and very good with the tone of the video. Soothing, relaxing. I quite quickly subbed and I find myself wanting to listen to more.
I am so glad this little video popped up in my recommendations, I have so many childhood memories of Moomin, the books, different cartoon/series, merchandice and moomin world in Finland. This was a huge nostalgia trip for me and also very well made and touching. I decided to sub to your channel and I hope many more do so too because this was beautiful.
Great Video! I’m from Poland and grew up watching the moomins! I have the fondest childhood memories sitting beside my sister on a Saturday and watching the Moomins!
Amazing that you made a video on moomins. It's one of the most aesthetic creation ever for me and I always get bittersweet nostalgia seeing them. Awesome video, I'm glad I found your channel! =)
Always nice to find a talented content producer so early on in their RUclips career. I’m amazed you don’t have more subscribers. Beautifully produced video.
The only memory I had was being scarred as a child watching the Grook episode. I forgot the name of the cartoon and 20 years later, I finally rediscovered it. Thank you to Katrin Davidsdottir to mentioning them in her video. I have been searching the cartoon using google with vague words and could not find it. Watching the Moomins as a grown up is just surreal. The wisdom and the deep meaning of the characters have blown my mind.
There's also the comic strip (drawn by Tove and her brother Lars), my favourite being "Moomin and aunt Jane" where they send Aunt Jane a chest full of swear words because they don't like her.
really?!!? THAT'S SO AWESOME! :D
PFFT THATS AMAZING
Was is the one where the first panel often had a Moomin "Mooning"
As I'm finnish I have been exposed to the Moomins basically my whole life, either through books or through the TV shows and this video made me appreciate them just a little more! Also very well made video hope you keep this up.
Sama täällä
Same
I'm Swedish and I have also been exposed to moomins a whole lot
Sama!!!!
Well there is a moomin version for pretty much every product possible out there in Finland :D
This is a fabulous Moomin Retrospective. I didn't grow up with the Moomins, but something drew me to them in my adult life, and now I'm a huge fan.
Moomins are the Winnie-the-Poohs of Scandinavia - a childhood friend had a copy of Finn Family Moomintroll, and it illuminated my childhood
That's an excellent comparison. I never grew up with these characters, in fact I JUST discovered them mere weeks ago--and I REEEALLY wish I HAD grown up with them!!!!
Finland is not scandinavian though
I grew up with both winnie the pooh and moomins in sweden though.
I grew up with moomins in estonia

As an American I've never heard of the moomins but if this was part of my childhood i would've felt lucky, the artwork is eccentrically beautiful
I feel the same way it's a real shame the Moomins didn't come to the U.S. especially the 1990 anime which could have aired on the Disney channel or Nick Jr since it has a English dub
Read the books! They are delightful, whatever age you come to them. Moominland Midwinter is the perfect introduction...
@@Transblucency i will definitely check it out thank's!
And now they made an ugly ass remake of it
I've heard from my American friends that they don't know what moomin is. It seems Moomis brand hasn't reached USA
All fairytales have an end...
I stay forgetting that people outside of Scandinavia and Japan saw this as kids...
It originated from outside Scandinavia though

I mean Yes but actually no, while Finland isn't technically Scandinavia, it's still pretty much the closest buddy to Scandinavia and it has a lot of the same culture, while still during their own thing. In short Finland is to Scandinavia what Snufkin is to the Moomin family.

I just finished writing a report in school about Tove Jansson. I'm so fascinated by her. Tove created something huge and I absolutely love her. This was such a great analysis, thank you for making this video.
Hey! It’s no problem it means a lot that you enjoyed it! I’m pretty obsessed with it but a lot more since making this video
STYNET I love the moomins so so much. I have since I was a little child and probably won’t stop loving them ever!
the moomins has started to boom on tumblr and thats how i discovered it. I always loved the animated mini series over the garden wall and always craved for something similar. Moomins is the original to that whimsical yet haunting atmosphere i love dearly. Im glad ive gotten into it as well as many others the past few months since the new 3d animated show came out.
Damn, why did you have me almost in tears at my big age? :')
It makes me very sad that I never grew up with the Moomins, but I plan on buying the books and watching the 90s anime soon. The rich history of the characters and the author herself draws me in so deeply.
the moomins were my childhood. In the 90s anime the music, the adventures and the artstyle make moomin the best cartoon/anime ever made
Don’t waste time being sad, be happy that you know what they are now.
As a finn who grew up with the moomin books and the show its nice to see someone outside of Finland or Japan talk about the moomins
Oh, what a trip down the feels lane, I'm tearing up a bit... The Moomins was the greatest show I watched as a kid, a fond memory of childhood.
A friend linked me to this. And one Moomin line has stuck with me for years now.
"We could all stand to be more Moomin minded." Tove was a treasure.
i didn't watch moomin a real lot as a kid, but i watched it sometimes when my family would live in a cottage on summers, and there weren't many other channels there
i remember the intro and how thick everyone's finnish accent was, and snufkin was always my favorite
I keep coming back to this video every now and then, and it is always better then I remembered. thank you for making this.
Moomin was really scary as a child when I watched it. That was really what set it apart from other children stories.
I grew up with the tone-down Japanese version, but still felt something different, eerie and strange things back then, too.
My mother would collect Moomin ceramics since I was young. The series gives me happy memories. I love that Tove wanted to create something that is peaceful, family oriented, and respects nature. Her illustrations also fit very well. This series is a treasure.
Mom won't stop collecting Moomin Cups
Ah, this made me actually tear up a little. What a great atmosphere, melancholic yet peacefully nostalgic.
I remember being absolutely smitten with Tove's illustrated world ever since my grandmother read me "Småtrollen och den stora översvämningen" (the great flood) before bed.
Seeing a lot of moomin-related stuff pop up everywhere lately and it brings me so much joy. (':
Now I want to read the books! I’ve always remembered these with a haze, back when I was in a different country. Thank you for helping me better remember what they are.
Love Moomins and I'm 56! Love Little My.
I’ve just discovered the Moominland and I’m 23! I love Snufkin.
9:29 rare unreleased footage of the jfk assassination
XD
Nuusgamuiggunen
Underrated comment.
Red Man that’s dark and so funny at the same time :DDD
Lmao
I remember snufkin being my first cartoon crush as a child :'D
I'm so incredibly humbled that you listened to my small bit of advice Sty. Your choice of music was perfect, and the atmosphere of this video is beautiful and somber. Your ability to tell a story is truly incredible my friend. I very much look forward to your future on RUclips.
Cheers it’s really great to have input! It does mean a lot of course and I thought I’d be extra delicate with this video
hearing you talk about the nostalgic values of moomins, even if for you it was such a small thing to happen, makes me so damn happy. it's rare at all that i'll find someone that has such a connecting mentality to the moomins. i first watched the fuzzy felt moomins when i was about 7 years old [about 12 years ago]. i only had one dvd of it, and it was the 5th volume so it was in the middle of the series, and even from that, it's probably a franchise that i'm the most thankful for and one that i'll never forget. as of the past five years i've researched way more about it, watched more of the shows, read the books, draw plenty of art of it, even the character of snufkin inspired me to learn to play more instruments, and the origins of the series itself made me wanna study finnish. there's something so unique and comforting about the series, it always makes me feel complete. and watching this, i just feel glad someone can think or feel a similar way.
The Polish Moomins were fantastic. I watched them as a child in the early 2000's and never thought of them as too old or anything like that purely thanks to the absolutely mesmerizing storytelling. This video was absolutely fantastic.
Thanks Leo mate
Im finnish and i have been surrounded by the moomin stories for as long as i have been alive. All of my memories having the books read to me and later on watching the animated series every weekend, is that it was menacing but also somehow comforting and giving you that feeling that you cant stop watching, im pretty sure almost all of it flew over my head, but i have never since found anything that would give that feeling.
Same as always, If you have any feedback it'd be lovely to hear! thanks a lot for watching guys it always does mean the world
STYNET I feel like youre going to blow up soon. I love your videos and theyre such good quality
"Starting in 1959 with the German television show "die Moomin family"
skdjfhsdfsd noooo xD Sorry, but since you pronounced this in English, it gives off a very wrong vibe. "Die Mumin-Familie" simply means "the Moomin family", for anyone who might be concerned. It's not supposed to be pronounced the same way as the English "die" in any case. ;D
Die sims
moomins were very popular in poland i remember that every over 40-year old person is refering to moonins as the best thing they ever saw as a child i persolally loved snuffkin and hatifnats...
The shot from the 69' show doesn't seem as bizarre when compared to the comics.
i find it amazing, but also sad how creating the series allowed her to find some kind of happiness during the war, but couldn't make her happy when her parents died.
i loved the series for what it was, but i love it so much more now that i heard tove jansson's life story and the ideas behind everything. this video was beautiful. thank you for it
Cheers Katherine!
Thank you, your comment really does mean a lot
STYNET of course! Thank YOU for doing justice to the Moomins and taking the time to learn about them after recalling the intro song from one morning in your childhood.
Isabella Presnal I’m glad I did, the response to this video has been ridiculously overwhelming
oh man this videos so good it made me cry, i didnt grow up with the moomins but ive been watching the show bc of how popular its been getting cus of the new one being made its so beautiful how these little guys never fail to make me smile :D
I’ve just started watching the show, but I hope to read books as well!
they were HUGE in Japan, I remember i owned a moomin plush and I always watched the show with it.
My parents are russian, and when I was small my mom read me the books about moomin-troll. Actually, they're very popular in Russia.
Thank you so much for this video! I'm a finn and i still learned a lot from it. I myself also have a lot of memories of being at home sick or during the weekends, eating apple slices my mom cut for me and watching moomins. Times to look back to, peaceful times, good times.
It's been maybe over 10 years since I last read the books. Your video really made me want to re-read them once again.
The editing and writing to this was amazing. it left me in absolute awe. You did a really good job.
its lovely to hear things like this
Great video!
I actually don’t know, I was aware of it and that I should have inserted something about it in the video and for some reason I didn’t, I guess I didn’t know how I could shoehorn it in, there was quite a lot I left out but I do agree that her sexuality was something very important and I should have addressed it
Yeah, let's not go down that path.
I don't think ones sexuality is such big of a deal to include in a moomin video. Big thanks Stynet for a great video! It had a sad tone in the end.. quite beautiful in a way actually. One could sense how important moomins are to you, I can relate.
It kind of is a big deal though? The original commenter even pointed out how much it affected the story. It's okay to talk about sexuality.
@@mousemallow2520 it's okay, but not a necessity IMO.
"Ei muumitaloa lukita yöksi. Hei muuuuuumit..."
Can still remember parts of the intro the show even though I haven't seen it since like 9th grade when we watched a couple episodes in school as a little nostalgia trip since that's where basic education ends and you move on to sixth form or vocational school. I watched this show so much as a kid and I loved it. Though I was a shit scared of Mörkö (whose English name I do not know)
Oh the memories.
Halfway I noticed there were tears running down my face
Cebu Dave lol that shit is scary in finland basicly everyone has to go trough rhat traumataizing experience
Haha, yeah. I can trace back most of my childhood fears to some moomin episode.
I am definitely going to see how to obtain these books after watching this, had never heard of Moomins at all here in USA.
theres something about the moomins that reminds me of nostalgia even if i didnt grow up with it
I only just recently started to look into The Moomins and this was a great video to catch me up on the history. Really enjoyed it!
As a Swedish person with a Finnish dad, the Moomins has a Giant a place in my heart. And my favorite character has long been the Muddler. (A character from moomin pappas memoirs)
Muddler?
Im not super familiar with the non-finnish names of the characters
Gunjα Fury
Thats "roddjuret" in Swedish but I don't know the name in Finnish..
@@bo_jpg9188 In finnish it's Hosuli.
I like "piisamirotta" the most. Its that astronomy rat thing from the film about the comet
Yes, I read Moominpappa's Memoirs a few years ago, I really liked it, and the Muddler was a character I loved and could kind of identify with too
This video is beautiful and a brilliant introduction to Moomins and the introduction always gives me goosebumps.
Moomins were my 90s childhood in Poland and all kids from my generation knew it. All the grandparents seem to love it too. :)
@@frogmouth alright, the land Sticky Fingers !!! ALLLLRIIGHHTTT !!
So this has been such a heartful expression of appreciation to Tove Jansons memory. Thank you 😊
I'm very glad this got reccommended to me, reminded me of memories watching Moomin
Your voice is really wonderful and very good with the tone of the video. Soothing, relaxing. I quite quickly subbed and I find myself wanting to listen to more.
Hey thank you very much
I am so glad this little video popped up in my recommendations, I have so many childhood memories of Moomin, the books, different cartoon/series, merchandice and moomin world in Finland. This was a huge nostalgia trip for me and also very well made and touching. I decided to sub to your channel and I hope many more do so too because this was beautiful.
Cheers daff
Great Video! I’m from Poland and grew up watching the moomins! I have the fondest childhood memories sitting beside my sister on a Saturday and watching the Moomins!
Man...For making this retrospective, I can only say: thank you. Thanks for bringing me back to those days. :D
Amazing that you made a video on moomins. It's one of the most aesthetic creation ever for me and I always get bittersweet nostalgia seeing them. Awesome video, I'm glad I found your channel! =)
Pure Nostalgia. When me and my brother were younger our father used to read us the moomin stories before bed. Moomin will alwayd be a part of me.
The moomins are a little piece of happiness from my childhood and this video beautifully portrays the nostalgia I feel towards it. Truly lovely stuff
Always nice to find a talented content producer so early on in their RUclips career. I’m amazed you don’t have more subscribers. Beautifully produced video.
My grandpa still watches moomin, he is in his late 70s and one of those grumpy types. Its very big here.
I am from Sweden so moomins was a big part f my childhood I loved the tv show and had a som books and toys
