    Here is my take on this:
    - The hinge mechanism have a self-tightening feature, otherwise they would become loose over time;
    - That feature is also the problem, because over time some models will become over-tight an the plastic will give up first;
    - If possible, after gluing everything together, you should loose the hinges a bit (there is a bolt/screw in most hinge models), because otherwise the plastic will break again;
    - The rule of thumb for how much loose should be (with the laptop closed), lifting the lid without lifting the base together. The tightness should be enough just to keep the screen in place, because over time it will self-tight again;
    - If your laptop is already requiring two hands to open the lid all the way, you should consider preventively loose the hinges, otherwise you risk the next time you open the laptop will be the one with the crack sound.

    A good practice I find is to put all the screws back in place while waiting for parts. It guarantees you don't lose them, and you don't have to remember where they go.

    The last hinge repair I had to contend with was a HP Mini Netbook, both hinges torn out of the top. A replacement top case was going for $80 on ebay, while I could get a whole new replacement HP Mini was going for $60 on ebay. Neither was a good option for my customer. . . . . . Gorilla Glue Epoxy however, was only $5 at the hardware store !!!

      Indeed. Is much faster and you don't need to replace anything. Loosening the hinge is a good measure too, otherwise it will break againg over time.

    One option instead of hot glue are leather rivet screws. Come in a variety of lengths. It does req more effort and modding but the end result is worth it. And the hinges have nuts to adjust the tension. Back them off ~1/4 turn and they won't fail to begin with.

    Hello Adam, nice and usefull videos on your channel, s been a while since I follow you and man, did I learn a lot of things! Referring stricly to this one, since I use to service laptops in the last 15 or so years, let me mention that the hinges - even the new ones - are working much better and easier with a litle help from our good common friend, WD40. In fact, every time a do a full service on a laptop, including cleaning, dusting, pasting etc I'll do a few drops of WD40 on the hinges, especially if they are Asus or HP's. Sometimes it's a messy job but I use to insulate the hinge part with some napkins. A few times (I got lucky) client brings in the laptop before breaking it and I use to dissasemble the hinges and dive them in WD40 or a similar oil over the night, after cleaning them with technical or isopropilic alcohol. Next day, they work like a charm. If I can loose them just a little bit from the nut, that's even better. Tottaly agree with Magoid comments. And yes, often there are no spare parts, so there's black, strong hot glue, fiber glass or dual-epoxy. Keep up the good work !

    If it's small damage, like one tread fall out or body isn't devastated I use two component epoxy. If it's ungluable damage drill through shell 3,5mm every screw hole add 3x 3M screws though hinges body add other side add small stainless steel plate 0.5mm with same holes distances like in hinges screws together and it never fail again. Or simply buy a new body on ebay if is available.

    I tried bodging a fix on the lid of my old laptop by epoxying the knurled nuts back into place. It worked for about a year but the epoxy slowly started to crack and the hinges became loose again. I got a replacement lid and attempted a proper job that mostly went OK. However I did manage to break the microphone built into the webcam. It's strange because the webcam works fine but the microphone, although the left channel works, the right just gives white noise and I can't force windows to use the left channel only. (Altering the microphone balance does nothing). One thing that nearly caught me out was that the bezel, that I also replaced, had a magnet in it that told the laptop when the lid is closed. So if you do a lid replacement and Windows doesn't sleep when you close the lid, try looking for a magnet in the old lid that needs moving over.

    2:20 Graham, I would love to see you take a laptop that's functional but not worth repairing (I'm sure you plenty you've acquired and keep for parts) and just start experimenting on it. Can you actually replace a $20 wifi antenna with a few cents worth of wire? What about the expensive display cables? Are there cables one might have lying around that can work in a pinch? Obviously, most of your customers are going to want real replacement parts. But you have over 100k people in the world that are probably never going to walk into your shop. It could very interesting to see what sorts of repairs could be accomplished WITHOUT the proper parts. And will the fixes only hold temporarily, or will they last indefinitely? How much jank can you introduce into a laptop and still have it work? Sometimes, that's the only option for people who need to fix something fast and/or cheap. Or it just might show how absurd it is to charge $20 for a wire, I mean wifi antenna.

In a scenario where the brass inserts in the base of the laptop break out it also might be the only option. I was unable to even find a replacement base case. As I see it, epoxy offers a cheaper and stronger solution. No waiting for shipping if you keep some on hand and it will fit any model of laptop. Only downside I can think of is potential for mess. I admit I once glued somebody's power button, but a bit of steady dremel work solved that. Thoughts?

    Guess I will be the one to use hot glue and things like that to fix this if the hinges themselves aren't snapped off... I am starting to get this balance with the combination of hot glue and superglue that the results can turn out pretty well.
    In Canada we don't have the privilege of buying something like this and expect it to show up in a few days... Most of the stuff we get either come from the US or China, and with eBay grappling monopoly forcing all exports from US sellers to use only their ghetto transfer postage service (called eBay "priority" international service), items in China with Speedpak arrive sooner! Not only is it most of the time not eligible for free postage, but also eBay many times charge upwards of $35 of postage for just a pair of hinges (small one that doesn't extend like this one) because this is like the moment when a direct flight is cheaper than a transfer flight!
    So yeah eBay recently is trying to kick out all of its partners, cucking PayPal by not allowing you to be paid to PayPal, cucking USPS by not allowing international services outside of eBay's own ghetto, and now cucking Shippo by introducing their own postage buying service!
    Also I think you will see a lot more of these faults in even crappier machines such as various Acer Asus Lenovo laptops. If you stay away from any Acer, Asus (excluding ROG), Lenovo (excluding ThinkPad), Dell Vostros, Inspirons and HP Pavilions, you will have a much lesser chance of this low quality fault.

      I recommend enterprise/business models. Those tend to be better made and easier to fix in case they malfunction. Stay away from anything of the consumer line of any manufacturer.

      Yea I agree with what people are saying here. Business-class laptops tend to be a lot more durable. I'm a Dell Latitude fanboy myself.

      @@Adamant_IT I suppose I was just curious as to your opinion from a repair and replace perspective, almost none of the channels really take things like the cost of the lid or how puny the hinges are when reviewing laptops. What about a tongue and cheek tier list video? Might be somthing fun to do on two guys talk tech.

    It sucks to see consumer HP laptops because if you've ever seen an elitebook, you know how much better they can make laptops, but they send out this garbage.

    • @magoid
      @magoid 3 года назад +1

      Indeed. When people ask me about what laptop to buy, I always talk about business models, even the used one if you didn't have the moneys for one brand new. Consumer line of any manufacturer is generally a week to break after the warranty expires...

    • @Adamant_IT
      @Adamant_IT  3 года назад +1

      I think the Elitebooks are under HP Enterprise, which is an entirely separate company to HP Inc (consumer)

    Buying from China BREXIT is essentially irrelevant, nothing has changed dealing outside the EU other than movements in currency exchange rates. The problem is the computer parts market, where there has been massive price inflation, ask some people from Australia &/or USA.
    Plenty of places where BREXIT makes a difference, this isn't one of them. Order stuff from inside the EU, then you might have grounds.
