15:16 Mutt and Jeff is an old comic strip. Like, ran from 1907 to 1983 old. A quick wiki search says it's considered the first daily comic strip (or maybe the first successful one). Mutt and Jeff were the two main characters: Mutt (the tall skinny one) was always looking for get-rich-quick schemes. Jeff (the short, bald one) was basically his sidekick. They weren't especially deep characters compared to comics that came later, but they got syndicated everywhere, so they're in the pop culture subconscious all over and are liable to get name checked in the weirdest places - such as here. 🙂
@@melvyncollins7305 @Pooglian That's great information (from both of you). I'm curious whether they took the name from the comic for the rhyming slang or the rhyming slang came about because of the comic. It's also used a lot to refer to couples when one is short and one is tall.

To be fair to Adam, the doctor did tell him to basically get lost and immerse himself. And he did. Unfortunately he was not a good person to be immersed. And it wouldn't be so bad i dont think (and i feel the Doctor would agree) if he just took responsibility.
Mutt and Jeff was a comic strip started in the early 1900s. The eponymous characters were like a Laurel and Hardy. Colloquially, it's kind of like calling two people Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum.
Your comment about Cardiff reminded me of something you said in a previous episode. Rose isn't from Cardiff. She's a Londoner. Yes, the show is filmed in Wales, but Rose et al are very much Londoners. First episode featured The London Eye, and then an alien ship crashed into Big Ben and 10 Downing Street was blown up. All near Rose's estate, and all, famously, not in Wales. Cardiff will pop up now and then, but when it does, they'll say so. Meanwhile, London buses, London taxis, famous London landmarks... probably London.

I'll just put my two pennies in. When Who was first broadcast in the 60's till whenever, The Actor Who (😂) was playiing the part was credited as Doctor Who for the first 4 Doctors. When TB (4th Doctor)left the show and PD(5th Doctor) took over, the name of the Chracter was changed to The Doctor. The name change was part of a drive to change the look and feel of the show with a new actor in the title role. The actual name change can be seen in the END credits. In the last episode of TB's Doctor he is Credited as Doctor Who. Even though he is in the episode right at the end for 10 sec's max PD is credited as Doctor Who. In the first episode of PD's run, PD is credited The Doctor. Remember end credits.
As I'm sure a few others have mentioned, throughout the history of the show he has absolutely been referred to as _"Doctor Who."_ And while I could be mistaken, I recall the Brigadier actually addressing him as _"Who"_ at least once. @@funnylilgalreacts Yeah, fair enough. I can't say I blame Mickey for being terrified/freaked out after seeing the inside of the Tardis, but it's still not a great look clinging on to Rose like he does. Bit wimpy. To be clear though, I was *not* trying to judge you for saying what you did, so I'm sorry if that's how I made it seem. I just found it amusing that you liked Adam initially because his character is... not well liked. It was all worth it to hear you call him a knob though!
Hi love your watch alongs. The best non spoiler explanation I can give you about the doctor being picky about companions is that the doctor is functionally immortal. Every companion he travels with means eventually he will lose that person even if they stayed all their lives they would die of old age and he would go on. For the doctor every companions means both love and loss. He accepts it but he has to limit it to stay sane
6:00 but one sentece/question of rose brought him back to ground.... " what are You becoming ?" that is why he needs companions, normal people that bring him back to the ground, whenever, he is about to go too far...
Also, Mutt and Jeff is a long-running and widely popular American newspaper comic strip created by cartoonist Bud Fisher in 1907 about "two mismatched tinhorns". It is commonly regarded as the first daily comic strip.
Yes, I remember the Mutt & Jeff cartoon in the Sunday Paper when I was a kid. A lot of cartoons you don’t hear about any more Andy Capp, Dondi, Apt. 3G were some of the others in the paper.
Just glad you're on a journey I know you'll enjoy. Totally agree with you on Eccleston. He's the reason I got hooked with this show in the first place. Had he not been so awesome, I may have tapped out and never revisited the series.
Episode 7 of Doctor Who aired on 4 January 1964, and was called "The Escape". It was part of the very first appearance of the Daleks. (Spoiler for Classic Who) At the end of that story, The First Doctor (Played by William Hartnell) is being asked by the Daleks to restore their power to save them, and he calmly says "Even if I wanted to, I don't know how." Yeah, The Daleks and the Doctor have a lot of bad blood between them, from the very start.
Given your day job I'm amused that you pointed out your plaque. But seriously, I'm really enjoying your reactions to this series (which was long enough ago that this is a fun refresher).
Keep watching. You will understand the Doctor's reaction to the Dalek in time. As for their design, they first appeared on Doctor Who in 1963. The BBC had very little budget for the show at the time so their monsters of the week tended to be simple and practical deigns Budges might have gotten a bit better in the 80s but not by much.
The design was considered a joke to many. A plunger and egg whisk as weapons. But somehow they created something that just ‘works’. The Dalek in this season has hardly changed since the early ‘60s.
adam exists as a cautionary tale, and to show why some people just don't end up travelling with the doctor at all. He decided to take advantage of the doctor to benefit himself and his family regardless of any consequences. It may also be why he distances himself from people, so he doesn't have to face the disappointment of those who don't reach his standards.

I love the Doctor's complexity. I think Christopher is matched only by Matt Smith (11th Doctor) in conveying that. Not saying that I dislike any of the other Doctors, quite the contrary. There are no bad Doctors, only bad episodes. I'm just saying that Christopher and Matt are wonderful at bringing both the goofiness and the intensity.
The Doctor was credited as Doctor Who in some early Classic Who seasons, so don't worry about occasionally calling him Doctor Who; the pedants can cry, but even the show itself did it once upon a time 😂 23:54 The editing on that! Fantastic! 😁
Russell T Davies wanted to use this season to explore some concepts that the original show never really went into - what happens to the people left behind by the companion, for example*. And in this case, what if somebody really didn't have what it takes to be a good companion. There are a couple of other story ideas yet to come. (* With the possible exception of Ace 's "Perivale Trilogy", Ian and Barbara's vague arc of wanting to return home and maybe the "UNIT Family" stuff)
"Mutt & Jeff" were two golden age comic strip characters. It has become a shorthand for two mismatched characters; Mutt was tall and thin while Jeff was short and stout.

I know a lot of people say that "maxc was the one who made suki grab the editors leg and that may very well be but i really like the thought that that was the last of her consciousness in her dead body, like a muscle memory going "oh no. If I'm dead, you're going with me"
The Doctor's name is canonically The Doctor. It can also be Doctor Who. Both have been used (and accepted) in official capacity.
The woman who saved the world in this episode was played by Christine Adams. She was also in a few episodes of Agents of SHIELD, and on the show Black Lightning, she played the hero’s ex-wife, and the mother of his two daughters.
She was also in a few episodes of Pushing Daisies.
Eccleston might not be many people's favourite doctor. But he sure is one of the best.
He comes in at a close second for me. I prefer Tennant, but he also got more time to relax into the role. Eccleston is really incredible though.
I'm Tom Baker, Eccleston, Matt Smith than Tennant.
Yep, T Baker, Tennant, Eccleston are my top three. Tom was the main Doctor of my childhood (although I did see a little Troughton and all of Pertwee)
Eccleston made me really like the show. Tennant made me LOVE it! I mean, to a level where I'd never loved a show before. So Ten is my Doctor, but there hasn't been one Doctor I don't have deep affection for. One took a while to grow on me, but grow he did! 💙
@@DravenGal I grew up as kid on the old who so Tom Baker is always my doctor but I also loved Tennant and most of the new doctors, it is a shame though the most recent years of the show.
What I particularly like about this episode is that it demonstrates both that the Doctor is very good at choosing his companions *and* why he needs to be. It takes a certain type of person to thrive in that environment.
I'm so happy you've been picking up on Bad Wolf, and incredibly eager for what is to come from that.
Simon Pegg was suppose to play a different character, which would have been more important in the show’s mythos but his schedule ended up changing and he did this part instead. Simon grew up a huge Doctor Who fan. He also narrated the behind the scenes show they aired in 2005, Doctor Who Confidential.
Michael Sheen and David Tennant are such great friends and they make a great joke about their careers in their webshow Staged
they must have had to pay him so much to put his face on this show
I just looked up the character he was originally planned to play, and that would have been a fascinating difference to what we got. I think I'm ultimately happy that we got the actor we did to play that character, but I still think it would have been fun to have Simon Pegg in a larger role than he got too.
@@theapocalex Simon Pegg? A fanboy like him? No, he'd have done it just for the chance to be in Doctor Who. Very big deal back then, at least for fans of British sci-fi...
@@petersvillage7447 Not quite yet... Most people were still jumping on the show at this point following word of mouth recommendations, and Pegg was still considered a small comedy actor. At the time of filming, he was just coming off Shaun of the Dead and no one knew how good Dr Who was yet to become.
@@MINKIN2no Pegg was a fan of Doctor Who for a long time. He grew up watching the classic series, and jumped at the chance to be part of the new series.
Going in blind not knowing that Daleks are basically an extreme analog of Nazi's due to when this show aired and stuff. Makes for a very interesting perspective.
Your spike animation was awesome!
I love you did the head thing. That was well done on you 😂
15:16 Mutt and Jeff is an old comic strip. 🙂
I think in this case it's just slang for being deaf.
@@melvyncollins7305 @Pooglian That's great information (from both of you). I'm curious whether they took the name from the comic for the rhyming slang or the rhyming slang came about because of the comic. It's also used a lot to refer to couples when one is short and one is tall.
@@melvyncollins7305 Then you'd be wrong. He was calling them that to refer to them as silly, non-thinking twits, not deaf, in a funny way, not a derogatory one. They heard him just fine, as they responded to him immediately ... the first time he called them.

“It’s like a horror movie”
I can’t wait.
Great opening! I watch a lot of Doctor Who reactions, but this is definitely one of the most interesting and insightful takes on "Dalek". Looking forward to the review after.
As a big fan of Doctor Who I'll say that Eccleston is still my favorite Doctor. He just has this charm to his character (he is fantastic!) and it makes me sad how many people look over him.
Great reaction, really enjoying these!!
Mutt and Jeff was a newspaper comic strip about a dog and his owner... The lanky Mutt and his short owner Jeff. It ended in the 80's I think.
Mutt and Jeff has became a way of describing a pair of mismatched people.
Hey! You should know, the episode “the empty child” has a part 2 and you should try and watch them back to back, otherwise it feels like you’re left off in the middle of an episode. Loving the series!!! It’s one of my favorites!
Agreed. ‘The empty child’ and ‘The Doctor dances’ is a 2 part story.
Although, enjoyment might be enhanced by having to wait for the resolution.
Absolutely no need to watch them back to back ...We all had to wait a week between them when they were broadcast...Cliffhangers are there to make you come back!!!
The Daleks were in the sixth episode of the first 1963 season of Doctor Who and have always been the Doctors and the Time Lords main villains.
Love your analysis of Dalek at the start - and Christopher Ecclestone definitely brought his 'A' game for that episode!
Being able to say 'Max's' full name became quite a party trick amongst my nearest and dearest back in the day!
Absolutely heartwarming that the Doctor declares he only takes the best - he’s got *Rose.*
Today you learned the Doctor's greatest power, inspiring normal people to do heroic things.
His greatest power, but also a curse. The people he inspires often die heroically.

Props to the editor for following up on your snap
Here in Atlanta they've been installing these information obelisks. Which is a double sided 70 inch touch screen flat screen. I actually used one today and it's also a police box. Not like the TARDIS. But It has a complete fire and police call button and siren.
It looks pretty cold in Simon Pegg's room in this episode. Cold Fuzz.
Hey: call the doctor whatever. YES he’s the doctor, but a lot of fans call/called him doctor who in the past
It's not a hard and fast rule, but I've found that original run fans tend towards "Doctor Who" while those who got into it after the relaunch go for "The Doctor".
@@andrewjuby6339 Fifth Doctor Peter Davison was the first one who had grown up watching the show and AFAIK he requested to change the credit from "Doctor Who" to "The Doctor", as did David Tennant.
I love your reactions. I'm always impatient for the next upload, but if you love Eccleston believe me, you will adore Capaldi, I know it'll be a long while but I cannot wait for you to see him
23:52 Hahahaha I didn't expect that, nice one.
Glad I wasn't drinking anything as I would have performed a "spit take"! Y'know, it's wild we've reached a point that allows an individual to "casually" present a visual like this as a "wink and a nod", when years ago, it would have required substantial resources of an entire effects team. 🤓
You are about to get into a _really_ strong stretch of episodes for the 9th Doctor. Can't wait to see your reaction to the next one.
The CGI getting better ober time is one of the reasons why I always tell people to start with the 2005 season. Jumping in at matt smith or even later and going back is painful. This way it just gets better over time.
@@busimagen Oh, wow, that's a really interesting Time-Line to follow. You basically saw things from her perspective, then, not the Doctors. That characters introduction is one of my favorites, can't imagine how I'd have viewed all her scenes without the context of that first intro.
Watch order of episodes for the end of the Series: 1x13, 2005 Children In Need Special, 2005 Christmas Special, 2x1
yeah i hope she pays attention to the order of the special throughout the show
Knowing where this show goes and having watched your reactions before I am stoked to watch where this is going! Enjoy!
It isn't just the Doctor's history with the Daleks from Classic Who, there's all the stuff he mentioned from the Time War, which happened off screen.
I think it's endearing to call him Doctor Who. He was credited as Dr. Who by the show itself for years, and even one of the actors that played the Doctor recently (which grew up as a HUGE fan of the show) calls him that.
Even in Eccleston's first series, I believe he is credited as _Doctor Who._
You can call the doctor doctor who for the first season. After that you need to get it right. Lol!
@@txsportsfreak02 I look on it as kind of a mistake that they credited him like that. I always explain to people, "The show is Doctor Who, but he's just the Doctor."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but are you talking about Capaldi? Because I love how they kinda make fun of "he's called Doctor Who" in World Enough and Time lol. I've been a fan for almost half my life (wow I can't believe it's already been that long) and even I call him Doctor Who every now and then!

Okay, shoutout to editor Xander What. Like bro, I could just hug you. Teach me, oh wise one!
The plunger and the whisk are a product of the low budget the show used to have in its earliest days. I love how iconic they've become to Dr. Who.
It also drove me nuts trying to recognize Simon Pegg at first. If you haven't already, check out "Paul" with Simon and Nick Frost, and voice of Seth Rogan. Whatever you do, do not get rid of your Tetris blocks. LOL
I also have a crush on Simon Pegg 😂 why would you feel embarrassed though? He's handsome, charismatic, adorable and very charming, especially in Spaced (it's a great show, I recommend it)
Mutt and Jeff was the name of a cartoon about 60 years ago. They were stray dogs.
Another good warm up episode, the series is just about finding it's feet. Stay tuned Angela.
Suki was dead, the jagrafess grabbed the editor's leg by controlling Suki
Probably. Although Suki/Eva would not be the first character to intervene despite being dead (see Gwyneth in "The Unquiet Dead").
Can I just say I love how long your intros and outros are for this show, and just how much time to you take to dissect it. Because it's such a long show, but the journey throughout is so so important and idk I'm glad how you appreciate it rather than just binging it without regard. I mean, I love this season and it's one of my favorites, but also my other favorite is like 8 seasons later which is so far down the line! But the show's also so good building up to that and it covers so many different things that I can't even feel impatient, I'm just happy to see you experience this all for the first time
To be fair to Adam, the doctor did tell him to basically get lost and immerse himself.
Been a fan since 70's PBS rebroadcast...your interpretation of the Doctor is just fine. On to Ep 7!!!
The Dr. was billed as Dr. Who in at least the first 3 years of it's broadcast.
Also in this series. David Tennant has it changed.
So glad you are reacting to Doctor Who.
I'm so pumped that you only have more episode before you get to my favourite episode of Doctor Who ever.
Meanwhile, London buses, London taxis, famous London landmarks... probably London.
im sure theres some fans whe get weird about calling him Doctor Who, but i know a lot of Whovians who either say that themselves sometimes or dont blink an eye when someone calls him Doctor Who, most of us are happy to see anyone else become a fan of such a Fantastic show
Also is it too late to point out that 'Whovian' is technically an American fan designation. The original name for UK Who fans is (according to Loaded Magazine) 'Anorak Clad Wanker' (from an A.C.W. since 1975) 😊😊😊

Loving your Doctor Who reacts. Can't wait to see the journey unfold. Thanks and keep up the great work!
23:54 i love that editing so much XD
Honestly looks really good haha
i love how unexpected it is
As I'm sure a few others have mentioned, throughout the history of the show he has absolutely been referred to as _"Doctor Who."_ And while I could be mistaken, I recall the Brigadier actually addressing him as _"Who"_ at least once.
It's a long and sorted history. But referring to the Doctor as *_"Doctor Who"_* has been done by everyone from fans to _those making the show itself._
Be well! 🙋🏼♂️
It was funny last episode watching you say you liked Adam, knowing what trouble he immediately causes for largely selfish reasons. Isn't hindsight a crazy thing?
Especially when you said you liked him more than Mickey! I mean come on, our boy saved the Earth! Idiot or not, he's a hero!
Mickey desperately clinging to Rose's leg is so gross. Adam being selfish was just as ick.
@@funnylilgalreacts Yeah, fair enough. I can't say I blame Mickey for being terrified/freaked out after seeing the inside of the Tardis, but it's still not a great look clinging on to Rose like he does. Bit wimpy.
But you've already seen him develop past that, at least being brave enough to save Jackie from the Slitheen and save the world by launching a missile at 10 Downing Street.
The editor was on point with this one! 🤣

Mutt and Jeff is rhyming slang for deaf.
Also, Mutt and Jeff is a long-running and widely popular American newspaper comic strip created by cartoonist Bud Fisher in 1907 about "two mismatched tinhorns". It is commonly regarded as the first daily comic strip.
Brits have a long and convoluted naming convention for slang. Easier to say Oreo than the Brit name of "Biscuits flipped with creme and chocolate".
Actually, it IS the reference to the comic strip, especially when, in this episode, he's calling the both of them ...
Yes, I remember the Mutt & Jeff cartoon in the Sunday Paper when I was a kid. A lot of cartoons you don’t hear about any more Andy Capp, Dondi, Apt. 3G were some of the others in the paper.
Mutt and Jeff was a newspaper comic strip. They were like Laurel and Hardy.
(Spoiler for Classic Who)
At the end of that story, The First Doctor (Played by William Hartnell) is being asked by the Daleks to restore their power to save them, and he calmly says "Even if I wanted to, I don't know how."
Yeah, The Daleks and the Doctor have a lot of bad blood between them, from the very start.

It’s not often done concept, the companion who doesn’t deserve to be one. Some people r too selfish to be given access to all time and space.
I'm still very fond of this episode. It was the first episode of Doctor Who I ever saw when it aired on my country's public television, and I got hooked on the show from there
Honestly the show listed him in the credits as "Doctor Who" for many years. People really shouldn't be giving you a hard time over something like that!
Ecclestone is my Favorite Doctor by far, glad you're enjoying his performance. I love this series, it's almost like i get to watch it for the first time again. I can't wait to see how you react to the next three episodes after this one which are my favorites along with Dalek.
Shame you don't want crying, get ready on the next one.
The Doctor was credited as Doctor Who in some early Classic Who seasons, so don't worry about occasionally calling him Doctor Who; the pedants can cry, but even the show itself did it once upon a time 😂
23:54 The editing on that! Fantastic!
I JUST REMEMBERED WHAT HAPPENS NEXT OOOOOH BOY
