    I just want to point out the Chinese student wrote faster than the American student and also relied on gimmicky tricks that don't apply under all circumstances, so while she completed the problem faster, it does not mean at all that she is a better student. The American student actually broke down the problem logically and understood it from the inside out before solving it, which is a method that when applied to other problems of a different nature does not leave her unprepared.

      Welcome to “Common Core” math. I had to look up RUclips videos last year to help my 2nd grader with her math. Common core is asinine! Instead of learning/memorizing the multiplication table they have MULTIPLE STEPS just to get the answers for the basics questions like 2+6=8 or 9x3=27. If they didn’t have to show their work, I’d just teach her the methods that have been around for centuries and work quite well.

    Trick I always use.
    Multiple first digits
    1 from 12 and 1 from 14
    1 × 1 = 1 (first digit)
    Multiple each numbers each letter and add them
    12 -> 1× 2 = 2
    14 -> 1 × 4 = 4
    2 + 4 = 6 (second digit)
    Multiple last digits
    2 from 12 and 4 from 14
    2 × 4 = 8 (third digit)
    Write the digits in order
    First digit, second digit, third digit
    168
    Note: This trick only works if you have two numbers that either starts with or ends with the same number
    Eg.
    12 and 14
    25 and 27
    14 and 64
    23 and 33
    This trick was found and confirmed proudly by me. Im too lazy to explain why and how this works.

    Yes i am American... i use pull down on multiplication... pull down can be odd because you use the half way mark or the x5 sometimes...... 48 x 79
    (48x7... 7x5 35-7 (5+2=7) 30-2=28... 7x8 8+2=10.. 7x10 - 7x2... 70 - 14= 56... 280+56=336 "8+2=10... 5-2=3")
    3360 + (48 x 9... 9x5=45.... 45-9... 9-5=4... 40-4=36... 360+(8x9... 9x10=90... 8+2=10... 9x2=18... 90-18.... 80.. 72)... 360+72... 432 + 3360 = 3792
    Please don't criticize me for how I do multiplication... I am dyslexic and I need to find ways to speed up the process for me... even if it's doing alot of random stuff... and yes... pull down is weird on how it work... I count up instead of counting down sometimes...... take 8-5 for an example.... it's 3 obvious.. but did you count up or count down... you see if you go 5... then 6 7 8... you get 3 from 6 7 and 8 "counting up"... it's weird but it's how I do subtraction most of the time... I do even use it in multiplication but I use the 5 and 10 mark for numbers 5x or 10x as a medium... still... don't judge me... it's how I work

    an easier way to calculate this would’ve been to double the 14 and half the 12..
    6x28 is the same as 12x14 then you can do the mental calculation for 6x28 much easier and quicker. 6x8 = 48, carry the 4 and 2x6 = 12+4 = 16 bring the number down and you have 168

    Long multiplication is the quickest on paper imo. The "American" method seems pretty tedious but does work for any combination of numbers. However, the trick the Chinese student displayed only applies to two digit by two digit numbers and also she did it backwards. I would've started from least significant digits for the case you end up with carry over digits.

      4+4=8
      4x4=16
      You have to add the 8 from 4+4 to the 1 from 4x4. It works like that cause in this case both the 1 and the 8 (really an 80) is a ten. When you add those you get 90, then you have the 6 leftover and when you add it all together you get 196
