It’s काठियावाड़ी, not काथीयावादी. It’s कामाठीपुरा, not कामातीपुरा. It’s ढोलीड़ा, not डोलीदा. THESE WERE EXACTLY MY PET PEEVES TOO. I have the same pronounciation pet peeves for Varun Dhawan. Anu. Chopra is U.P. Bhaiyya and her mom is script writer. But she wants to show that she is "hip" woman from south bombay (not mumbai) mind you. Ms hoity-toity, karan-johar-types.
This movie and Aalia’s success was important. It proved that trolling is irrelevant and if a person knows his craft and is sincere, naysayers (Kangana) cannot sabotage your product / bread and butter.
When SLB is good, he is truly f*cking legendary. I watched Gangubai today. Uncle and aunties to my left and right were crying. I was sitting in the middle, trying my best not to cry.

Its kind of infuriating that you talked so much about Afshaan but not said a single word about how the guy playing that character performed. Shantanu Maheshwari deserved atleast a single notification in your review so did Seema Pahwa. 🤷♀️

Everything is okay .. except the lead cast ... Cast Alia as Gangubai ... it's a big No. The cast should be some one like Vdiya Balan, Tabu, Sushmita Sen or Kangana Ranaut.
The character of Gangu was barely in her twenties when she did all this, the casting is very age appropriate. The youth and tender age is supposed to be felt and you're supposed to feel uncomfortable that such a young face is going through this because that's the reality.

A minor point: Pronouncing the retroflex letters (ट, ठ, ढ, etc.) in Hindi/Urdu words correctly does not diminish one’s urbanness or make one less evolved. It’s काठियावाड़ी, not काथीयावादी. It’s कामाठीपुरा, not कामातीपुरा. It’s ढोलीड़ा, not डोलीदा.
I just watched it and Alia has undoubtedly hit the ball out of the park. And not just her! The entire cast has done a brilliant job with their respective characters. Sanjay Leela doesn't disappoint with the cinematography as expected. I did find it a bit long at times but overall an enjoyable film with great visuals.

Sometimes some films touch your heart....gangu did.....and seeing those old theatres in all there glory those old Streets make heart skip a bit.....it was indeed slbs more personal film...we could see slb sitting in the frames!...his childhood memories it all made Gangubai a flawed beauty for me

the film lacked SLBs charm..it cannot at all be called a biopic as it isnt even tell a part of gangus story..alia was good..again the SLBs charm was way lacking..the dance and some scene where all typical deepika slb movie vibe(like putting her iconic performances from all 3 movies together)
Alia Bhatt's and Deepika Padukone's dance in earlier SLB movies is completely different. Gangubai's dance in Dholida depicts her extreme emotions that she is going through. She is a sex worker who was sold off to a brothel at a young age of 16 years and she was compelled to transition into Gangubai Kathiawadi because of her circumstances. She wanted to take back the control of her life and she wanted to be the sole protagonist of her own life. Watch the song carefully. Towards the end she embodies Maa Shakti whom we worship as the symbol of strength and power.
Genuinely..!! Gangubai in terms of story telling toh Guu hi khaa rahi thi.. Bohot boring movie hai guys don't listen to them don't know why suddenly every reviewer is liking this thrash... Banking the entire movie on the shoulders of an actress when movie makers and producers of this day and age are highly reluctant to give meaty roles to women and do not want to spend a penny on scripts in which a female protagonist leads the way speaks volumes about how masterful a director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has directed countless critically acclaimed movies which were box office hits- Black, Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam, Ram Leela.... and so on. Calling him mediocre is like calling Albert Einstein a dumb person. But then again I believe that you are an amateur when it comes to movies because only an amateur would compare SLB with Rohit Shetty.

Didnt like the movie. I felt Alia looked out of place. Too young and felt like she broke character in many scenes. Didnt like the sets and felt the movie tried too hard. Some parts were too “in your face”. Sometimes a little subtlety goes a long way.

It’s so irksome that Anupama almost always mispronounces the few, scarce Hindi words that she chooses to use in her review, in this case, the movie title itself. You’re pronouncing Kathiyawadhi as it’s written in English instead of its original Hindi pronunciation. What level of elitism is this that you feel compelled to distort Hindi pronunciations into an almost English one? One can polish their reviews with the fanciest English vocabulary but one discredits their own self massively when they can’t even pronounce or properly speak in the language that the movie is being made in. It’s happened so many times in so many reviews (sometimes with some very common proper nouns)… it almost makes me wonder if Anupama is even comfortable in speaking Hindi. At least do the research for the correct pronunciations for something as integral as the movie title. This comes from someone who is an avid viewer and admirer of this channel so please don’t brand my criticism as trolling, as you are wont to do.

the film lacked SLBs charm..it cannot at all be called a biopic as it isnt even tell a part of gangus story..alia was good..again the SLBs charm was way lacking..the dance and some scene where all typical deepika slb movie vibe(like putting her iconic performances from all 3 movies together)
Alia Bhatt's and Deepika Padukone's dance in earlier SLB movies is completely different. Gangubai's dance in Dholida depicts her extreme emotions that she is going through. She is a sex worker who was sold off to a brothel at a young age of 16 years and she was compelled to transition into Gangubai Kathiawadi because of her circumstances. She wanted to take back the control of her life and she wanted to be the sole protagonist of her own life. Watch the song carefully. Towards the end she embodies Maa Shakti whom we worship as the symbol of strength and power.
Genuinely..!! Gangubai in terms of story telling toh Guu hi khaa rahi thi.. Bohot boring movie hai guys don't listen to them don't know why suddenly every reviewer is liking this thrash...
List seriously even a teen who is not good at reviewing a movie can easily tell now weak the plot is and how much disconnected we are from the characters throughout the movie..

The movie was not at all safe. Banking the entire movie on the shoulders of an actress when movie makers and producers of this day and age are highly reluctant to give meaty roles to women and do not want to spend a penny on scripts in which a female protagonist leads the way speaks volumes about how masterful a director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali has directed countless critically acclaimed movies which were box office hits- Black, Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam, Ram Leela.... and so on. Calling him mediocre is like calling Albert Einstein a dumb person. But then again I believe that you are an amateur when it comes to movies because only an amateur would compare SLB with Rohit Shetty.

Didnt like the movie. I felt Alia looked out of place. Too young and felt like she broke character in many scenes. Didnt like the sets and felt the movie tried too hard. Some parts were too “in your face”. Sometimes a little subtlety goes a long way.

It’s so irksome that Anupama almost always mispronounces the few, scarce Hindi words that she chooses to use in her review, in this case, the movie title itself. You’re pronouncing Kathiyawadhi as it’s written in English instead of its original Hindi pronunciation. What level of elitism is this that you feel compelled to distort Hindi pronunciations into an almost English one? One can polish their reviews with the fanciest English vocabulary but one discredits their own self massively when they can’t even pronounce or properly speak in the language that the movie is being made in. It’s happened so many times in so many reviews (sometimes with some very common proper nouns)… it almost makes me wonder if Anupama is even comfortable in speaking Hindi. At least do the research for the correct pronunciations for something as integral as the movie title. This comes from someone who is an avid viewer and admirer of this channel so please don’t brand my criticism as trolling, as you are wont to do.
In a country with so much diversity in language, it’s hilarious to me that you can get so caught up on pronunciation.
@@Mikhailanand when it is a constant pattern, it becomes a little more than just oversight. There is a pattern of language elitism and condescension in this country. The callousness of not even caring to learn the pronunciation of the movie title almost comes across as disrespectful.
@@Mikhailanand Someone mispronouncing an English word is very often subject to being corrected, being looked down upon. Maybe you've not experienced that personally, but it happens. I think it isn't unfair if I voice out my displeasure to the constant mispronunciation by Mrs. Chopra, specially when a part of her job is to review films of Hindi language, amongst others.
