    To be Frank....I prefer Sanjay leela bhansali's movies like black and guzaarish over historical dramas..... he can do much more like that instead of clinging to history.....if history is presented...the characters must have more complexities n layers to them rather than being complete black or complete white.....

  • @likhithshetty1758

    The biggest understanding required here is the fact that this movie is not about a 21st century women . It is an artist's impression of another artist's poem about a mythical ( or real) Queen . This movie never intended to tell u about the present day women !
    From your entire review , what I make is that you went in with 'Wrong' expectations ! And as far as the Jauhar is concerned , it was a tad bit different from sati as sati was a compulsion whereas Jauhar was a choice the ladies made . They considered it 'honourable' to die than to be captured and enslaved by the enemy . It is not something Practical , from the perspective of this century . BUT it had always been a part of our Glorious Indian History .
    Khilji according to 'most' of our history is considered to have been a barabric ruler . And when this movie happens to be about the Rajput Pride and Valour , it simultaneously demeans the opponent .
    This is Padmavati's Story . We might not be used to Women centric films but this is a small step on that direction. The ending , if seen through the story teller's vision , was about the women taking up her choice !
    Padmavati is a historical legend . PADMAAVAT is a retelling of that story. It doesn't promise to provide 'SOCIAL' changes . Maybe we can leave that to VVC & RKH ?😂 .

      NIPUN PUROHIT - Are you serious? TZH got very good response from most of the critics and audience word of mouth was really strong. That's why its still running to 70-80% capacity in Week 5. Its not just another typical Bollywood or Salman Khan film. It was a strong, plot driven action film. Do your research properly buddy.

    • @TejanShrivastava
      @TejanShrivastava 6 лет назад +4

      Nitesh Panda - Shows what kind of mentality you have who thinks Befikre is ahead of its time and TZH didnt get good reviews. Befikre is the worst film made by a A listed director in a long time and TZH is the most positively reviewed and loved action film of all time. Keep your hatred to yourself and go watch many more shittier films like Befikre.

    I understand your point, but even if you consider the technical aspects of the movie: cinematography, lighting, shots, costumes, background score, sound mixing and sound editing, the movie is far far better than the typical Bollywood movies some of which you rate as high as 3-3.5 stars. I used to respect your opinion as a true cinephile, but I don't think I will after this one. You can see the number of dislikes on the video to get an idea of what a majority of people think.

    Jauhar was committed to save themselves from the brutality of the invaders. As we all know the ladies that remained in the fort after the war were usually used as sex slaves.So rajputs preferred to die with their head held high than become captives.
    According to local folklore,Khilji couldn't enter the chittorgarh fort so he stopped all the supplies to it.
    When the soldiers inside were completely devoid of food the opened the gates of the fort and just attacked on the army.Reason being the same,they could accept death during fighting rather than life as a prisoner.This was also the time when the last standing soldiers were giving up their lives on the battlefield the women committed jauhar,leaving behind just a dead fort.
    Jauhar was not a glorious practice but it was a better option available to them.

    • @honeybee4016
      @honeybee4016 6 лет назад +6

      Yes this is true it was more of a choice between a rock and a hard place. The women who became prisoners had a horrible life so jauhar even though it felt like a barbaric practice was better than dying everyday living life as a prisoner

    Ranveer was undoubtedly star because his role was multidirectional while Deepika and shahid were restricted to 'ideal image' which is reverse of karni sena. They compelled rajpoot image to ideal god like figure while khilji a roaring, ruthless monster. But khilji got advantage of not Endorsed ideal so he did whatever he wants. movie was little streched. Jauhar scene in end was too long. Perhaps trying to establish as goddess. Rajasthan, Delhi and middle East 's qabayal civilization presented perfectly. Some expression of movie were above dialogues.

      That fight scene was metaphorical to his battle against time at that point.Just perceive it as art.
      It is actually a common elements in story of star-crossed lovers especially in Sindhi/Punjabi love stories.

    I didn't see the movie, but I quiet feel that shahid's casting would be a weak link in the film as he seems unconvincing in portraying the character of a Rajput king. The look outs in this movie are Deepika's acting and dance, Ranveer's complex character, grandeur set design, fight sequneces and background score. I hope the story won't disappoint in amidst of the notable positive factors of the movie. Nevertheless, I agree with Anupama's review as I personally feel the movie will lack on story level.

    Bollywood reminds me of Old Hollywood. "Cleopatra" was the most expensive and glamorous film produced at the time, starred Elizabeth Taylor as the beautiful queen of a doomed empire, and was pretty to look at but not much in the way of storytelling. But people are rather illogically praising it as a masterpiece even to this day, because of the impression it created.

      it was quite racist approach to represent his ethnic in a over the top barbaric way. according to this representation rajputs are so noble, so blue blood, so high cultured people and dignitywala-sexist while khilji's society is uncivilized, ugly, noisy, uneducated, has no culture and abusivewala-sexist. if you want to underline the savagism of on person there are many other ways to do it. to do it in this way is firstly too shalow, it shows how limited your imagination and creative approach and secondly it is racist.

    Don't go by her rating!!! The movie is a magnum opus.SLB's movies are like operas. One should carry that mindset before entering the hall.Padmavaat(i) is A Spectacular Extravaganza with intricate artistic details which very few can dare to attempt to make.The story is simple tone and only three characters-centric.So Khilji has to be the bad man if the other two characters are in love with each other & that has nothing to do with Khilji's "muslim" identity. The Hindu priest, who was expelled from Chittor for his ravenous lust for Padmavati is also a bad man. Anupama did not mention that!So please ignore this oversimplification. Do watch the movie! Ranveer is an awesome talent. And so are Shahid & Deepika. You would find it way better than Befikre.....SLB probably had forgotten to spend few more bucks for these critics to talk good about his flicks believing in his own mettle of filmmaking. It seems YRF does not take that risk and hence the obvious pradelection !!!

    I'm astounded by this review, is Anupama no longer enamored by Indian cinema anymore? She seems to have missed the beautiful unfolding of a story. Yes there was grandeur, beauty in every scene and why shouldn't there be but there was also symbolism, subtle nuances that if you looked away for a moment you would miss. The acting by all actors was truly incredible, each character had so much depth, passion and intensity which added to the telling of the story. I would give it 4/5 and recommend you to experience this movie on the big screen!

    I saw movie yesterday on 24th and I agree word to word what u said. Ranveer nailed it as Monster Khilji.Apart from all d scene u mentioned I also liked d scene where he give emotional speech to boost his army. Movie is bit slow and it loses its passion and rhythm. It seems v r watching a documentary unless & until u know history. Poor Bhansali feel so sorry for such a creative person who can do miracles on screen but due to restrictions he has to do limitations. I wish he release uncut version of Padmavati online. Cos seeing this movie was like just watching frame by frame photo album. Not as exciting as Ram leela, Bajirao Mastani. Of course to mention Khali Bali & binte dil songs are awesome. Bhansali sir 👍

    The best performance here was done by Jim Sarbh as Malik Kafur but, unsurprisingly, he was ignored most people. Even critics like you. No one seems to talk about it. Such a shame. He is a much better actor than Ranveer, Deepika and Shahid combined.

    Dear Anupama, I love film companion and most of all I love ur movie reviews. 9 out of 10 times in agree with u and out of all the critics in find the film companion reviews the most honest ....until today. I watched your review of Padmaavat a few times. Yesterday i got the opportunity to watch it in The Netherlands. I must say for the first time a couldn’t understand why u gave the movie just 2,5 stars. I agree that the story was a little bit tin but the screenplay was perfect. There are a few slow moments in the beginning but that is to build up the story. I Bhansali would have made big jumps at once instead of just slowly build story most of the critics would have given him less than 3 stars. The movie is 2,5 hours long but for this story to work in was necessary. I didn’t get bored a bit and in the end of the movie people started clapping 👏🏼. U always give more stars to smaller more serious movies who are less entertaining. I watch all of them. But entertainment that is also what the Indian film industry is all about.
    So maybe u could have been less harsh on Padmaavat .
    Love ur work and film companion
    Sherien

    Striking tableu IS the best way to describe the emotions of every character that was a part of this film. Including Khilj, I mean even he starts to gaze into thin air talking about how he doesn't get true happiness. What is that? I remember watching Devdas, which was a very grand version of what the original was and it got its due flak for it, but the world SLB created with SRK and the rest of the cast who were committed in expressing their love, hate, anger and ego is world apart from what he has consistently created in the past 3 years.

A little more drama and colourful visuals...he did it..I can't get through your sophisticated language but..movie is exceptionally good..no need to criticize about the content as it is true and happened ages ago which can't be altered for satisfying review writers...a must watch for any movie lover..

    2.5 is less for a movie that's better in many ways expect few with every actor doing justice to their roles. It's visually brilliant, dialogue deliveries are pretty good and the efforts the actors put on to make their characters appealing can be seen quite clearly. One who's seen the movie would at least give 3 or a 3.5.

  • @smalltown_wanderer

    Spoilers alert
    Every act, scene, frame as well as the entire movie is an master piece itself. The directors attention to details just take your overall experience to a whole new level. The homage to the bigone era of royalty and it's essence is beautifully captured by the Bhansali Sir. The only thing it faulter is the CGI that you won't even notice if you watch it in 3D, which only focus on the vision of the director itself, you can only see what he wants you to see rest become blurr. I wish he had avoided that because I was craving for all those small details which he artfully puts into his movies. Now the performances the Shahid and Deepika's characters I believe were underwritten or I would like to say under-explored there can be enormous possibilities in that too. The romance between Shahid and Deepika's relation doesn't grow onto me and I think first half must have elaborated their relationship so as an audience we could make ourselves count for the leading duo inspite knowing the infamous 'jauhar'. Despite this Shahid has given another flawless performance. His Rawal Ratan Singh is epitome of Royal Rajput yet shows common emotion of being judged, which eventually becomes the reason of his abduction in the movie. We started to expect a lot from Deepika and it is not her fault. She was stupendous, her eyes says the million words and still she doesn't stays in the memory after the movie is done. This movie is entirely a Ranveer Singh movie, I tell you why, he performs with his whole heart. He is the absolute evil yet her desire of beauty makes him relatable at some point one where he slept through the burning pavilion was my favorite one. Another instancece when the Khilji(Ranveer) was dancing after receiving the news of padmavati's(Deepika's) arrival in the movie, the amount of energy he puts into his dance moves the intensity with which his fingers moves appropriately shows the excitement of the character . Kudos to the coreographer Mr. Ganesh Acharya, yet another high song after 'malhari' when I dig in I found out that The Bhansali-himself approved the song after 10 takes. Over all I would have loved the movie even more if I could have get one scene of khilji post padmavati's jauhar. His frustration and helplessness could have made the last disclaimer of greatest defeat valid.
    Though I walked into the theater hoping for rollercoaster ride of asthetics and beautiful cinematography, which I got too. That is why I'm extremely happy that the movie finally released and I got the honor to watch it before anyone else.

    as many have pointed out, slb is great at creating grand visuals and frames, but is a weak storyteller..bhansali's previous two films, ram leela and bajirao mastani were mediocre in their storytelling ability, dialogues and character development, but audiences are usually distracted of that because of the grandness of the films..they end up succeeding at the box office because there really is not other maker in india (until bahubali) to tackle films and concepts visually like bhansali..in his entire career, only devdas and black are the films which can be considered outstanding..rest are severely overrated, sadly and probably padmavat included

    • @eckzotic
      @eckzotic 6 лет назад

      good to hear your perspective..i can go into long details about my point of view, but ill try to sum it up as concisely as i can..for ram leela, the shift and downward spiral of ranveer's character seemed surreal to me..a guy that head strong just becoming so weak so quickly seemed to be a big time dramatic liberty, in order to move and finally conclude the film..that suspended any weight the film had for me at that point as the character and the situations surrounding him became farcical..Bajirao- bajirao and mastani's romance was so underdeveloped..the backbone of the story-their love- just happened so quickly and randomly that again, it felt like a big time cinematic and dramatic liberty just so that there could be a story and more effort was put at portraying the glamorous dances and the conflict that follows beyond interval, eg the spectacle..there just seems to be a constant trend of underdeveloped characters and storylines in bhansali's films..the mistakes are so glaring that personally for me, it ruins the efforts he puts into other things..and that brings me to devdas, thats the only film of his where the characters are so well written and the storytelling has minimal plotholes..because that film was a work of fiction, and because of the time when it takes place, it is not hard to believe that such a story actually occurred..anyways, its always good to hear the other side of film criticism, and your points are just as valid as mine
