Yeah as a thank you for teaching him that

But when the incident actually occurred the year prior, he was in middle school. You can look it up! In fact, one of the articles I read said he had the hiccups and that's what caused him to choke. He hiccuped as he was swallowing and the piece of chicken got stuck.

I hope he cuts the steak into small, chewable pieces!
@@1eljugo😊😂😊😊right
What if he's a vegetarian? LOL
@@1eljugo Exactly what I was thinking 😂
Teenage boy, in my county, died from choking on an egg salad sandwich, before his parents got home from work. He had fought a benign brain tumor for most of his life. His parents always feared the tumor’s growth would lead to his debility or death. Story shows just how fragile life really is, and that tomorrow is never promised.
I know it’s been two years, but Awesome job, young man!
Aspiration and choking is not uncommon with medical conditions. They are at high risk to choke and/or drown young, or grow old and die from pneumonia from aspirating food, liquids, or even stomach acids (if they were vomiting). It also helps when you don't smoke, since things like COPD, asthma, and lung disease tend to exasperate issues with the lung.
This raises the topic of something not a lot of people think about or even know how to do: what to do if you are choking alone. A YT channel called FirDepartmentChronicles(mainly comedy sketches about EMT/firefighter life) did a PSA video on it a while back. While you can still call 911 and hope they figure out from the silence something is up and get to you on time, and some places apparently have 911 texting capabilities, time is of the essence and you should not wait for help. Call 911, but don't just sit and wait. You will need to self-administer aid to yourself. Basically, self-administering choking aid involves you slamming yourself into the edge of a table or back of a chair, or other sturdy, medium/sternum height object.
@@stevennguyen4993 my great uncle died in 1991 from aspiration pneumonia.
They were not supposed to leave him unsupervised, as he had a TBI as a teen, and his confusion was much more pronounced since he was already acutely ill and in an unfamiliar setting. Family was taking turns to make the 4 hour round trip to sit with him, but the one shift that we couldn’t be there, staff left him alone to eat and choke! He was placed on a vent and was never able to wean off.
I was 15, at the time, and it still infuriates me!
@@benjaminmorris4962 I LOVE Jason!
‘Fire Department Chronicles’ is very informative, with a heaping side of hilarious! 😂
I remember when I became CPR and first aid certified for the first time. It was years before becoming an RN, and we discussed self-administering the Heimlich maneuver in great detail. I think the subject came up, because I was pregnant, and we were talking about modified techniques.
I still play the scenarios over and over in my head. We were told to use the back of a chair, or the car door if you’re driving when you get choked. I’ve placed myself in both positions, and I can say that they’re not comfortable, and definitely awkward, but if that’s what it takes to save your life (or your brain), it’s worth it!
@@TinaRN Your great uncle's case is something I see about once a week. With neurodegenerative problems (like Parkinson's and dementia) and acquired brain damage (from stroke or hypoxia), there's usually some secondary dysphagia (swallowing problem) involved. In some cases, the person is really just too weak to purge their lungs of the foreign substance. In your great uncle's case, I think it was really just the fact that his risks was already very high. Patients on feeding tubes can still aspirate, and even something as natural as saliva can accumulate in the lungs. Things a healthy person would just cough out and shrug off.
Hemlich Manuver & CPR are two things should be made mandatory in School Training
It’s my experience that when people say that it means they don’t know it and have no intention of learning
@@M_SC I mean… I agree with the original comment.. and I am CPR certified, and know the Heimlich, as well as had concussion training.. but I’m a high school track coach, so it was required. Really glad I know it all though. After watching this video, I plan to teach it to my elementary school age kids in case they ever need to use it.
@@BoyMama87 Most countries no longer teach the Heimlich maneuver in First Aid because it can be injurious to internal organs.
@rallyvincent23 Suucinctly, it's striking the back in upward motions. Doing this ensures no injury to organs that the HM can realise as there is no boney protection and the thrust of the HM can impact on these exposed organs.
Agreed. For all the things we learned in school that we never use...we should learn these things every year!!
Seriously, well done young man. This & CPR (& IMHO, sign language) should be taught in all schools.
I agree sign language would have been awesome. I am Deaf and never learned it because no one around me knew it either. Would have made my life easier tbh.
@@iSheree wow, really? That must have been so hard for you to communicate your wants and needs! But yes, I think there is a real need for hearing people to learn it. I'm not deaf, but I do have a nephew with Downs Syndrome, and he's non verbal so he signs. I've learnt the basics but I couldn't have a conversation. And that's sad. 👍💖
I learned ASL for a whole year, but I forgot most of the vocabulary. I can still fingerspell fluently though. Looking back, it was a waste of time for me. It should be taught, but it should not be mandatory.
@@M42-Orion-NebulaI think it should be mandatory. Why? You never know when you might need it. We get taught certain math (I am not referring to basic math) but math that the average person will NEVER use in their day to day lives, yet it is mandatory. I would prefer to learn something like this, than trigonometry in HS.
@@4daluvofnikki I understand what you're saying but math, yes, even trigonometry and calculus, is way more useful and more productive than ASL. I would say that calculus has helped me in my day to day to life just as much as arithmetic. I don't want to sound offensive but just because you don't have any applications for advanced math does not mean that it it less useful than ASL. ASL is a passion, perhaps hobby for hearing people without Deaf family while math is what gave you everything in the modern world.
I was witnessing a child choke in the doc’s office. I told the parent to raise only one of his arms and when he did
the child threw it all up. The act of raising one arm made the esophagus stretch to one side so the food could be dislodged.
Thank you for this little sliver of knowledge. I honestly didn't know that raising one arm opens up the esophagus enough for food to get out. 😄👍🏼
You probably mean trachea, not esophagus? Swallowing a piece of food large enough to compress your trachea from inside the esophagus isn't common, usually you choke because the pharynx, larynx or trachea is clogged. I couldn't find your technique recommended anywhere, especially not with that explanation. Abdominal thrusts and back blows are the safest bet. Was probably a fluke that it worked
Thanks for that extra knowledge 😊
Do you mean like he lifted the child by one of their arms? Or simply raising it?
@@sebastianmoscoso9404
They mean, to simply raise one arm up in the air... please do NOT pick a child up with one only one arm as this can cause serious damage to their body👍
Teachers help and kids make a difference! Kids like this make me so very proud to be a teacher. We’ll done, Ms. Howa!! 👍🏼
This really shows the importance of teaching kids life-saving skills in moments when they are calm and don’t need it yet. That way when emergencies happens, they remember. High school for me was 20 years ago. I don’t remember learning this then (I know it now) but so glad they teach it today.
Aw, what a cute story! I really love that the health teacher was like, "they're listening!!!" Students actually learning is a sign of great teaching (especially boy students at this age).
I love how he came back and said "and I wasn't even paying attention! She just did a good job" very cool.

I bet his parents are real proud. Job well done.
That was scary, so glad he was able to save his friend. This technique should be taught in all schools. It’s very useful and won’t cost the schools a lot of money.
It is in my entire state. Has been for over 25 years.
I love how he kept his eye on his friend from the moment he started coughing to him going to the trash can and turning around holding his throat.! Hunter never took his eye off him! That is true love, compassion and smart! Amazing job! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Honestly that is a very important detail I almost missed. It is really interesting how the boy kept assessing the situation the entire time
Yes, as I said in a different response, recognizing that an emergency exists is often the most important step in a rescue. It is also one that is often overlooked. NEVER allow someone who you suspect is having an emergency to leave and hide themselves away in a restroom or other out of the way place It may be an embarrassment, but keep them in your sight.

Kids are actually awesome. Their body, brain and whole concept is actually like Ferrari F1 racing car. It is one of greatest mystery of life, that it takes individuals approximately fifty years or so, to knowledge , learn and appreciate that fact, and by then most of us are like aged family cars. People can be as good and capable as they are expected to be , as long as good education and right guidance is given
The Heimlich is so easy when you know what to do and difficult when one doesn't know. I took survival first aid when on unemployment insurance with the Heimlich being part of the curriculum. Later, a friend got a piece of weiner caught in his throat. His friend tried to save him but could not.I tapped the his friend on the shoulder (taught in every first aid course I have ever taken) stepped in landmarked compressed and we all went back to eating. No problem. Learn the Heimlich.
I love this! Praise God to give this young man the ability to know how to save his friend from choking to death. ❤
