Thank you for organising this talk and posting it on RUclips. I am a swim coach from a small club in a small town in Malaysia in Kuching Sarawak. I watched this at 3am and thoroughly enjoyed it. Even though I knew some of this stories and quotes etc I still found it insightful and fascinating.

The greatest champion is amazing, but everything is led by the champion's coach! What a perfect match!

God, Coach Bowman's speech was SO inspiring! Hearing this guy's insights, experiences, techniques, etc., made me feel like a type B by comparison, lol!
I am definitely going to try to apply Coach Bowman's lessons to my life somehow--however best I can, which I hope is at least a good and *respectable* amount.

Didn't learn how to put on bandages on a horse before I'd been riding for about 5 years and owned a horse for 2 years 😅 (I never needed bandages until my horse was injured )

To me it was your picture of who you are is who you will be.
He didn't say it, but when you feel timid or the judgments of naysayers on you you are crippling yourself.

I think poor phelps never had fun! Too much work and achievements put him in depression!!! To the point of thinking of suicide!! I don’t think it’s healthy to push someone so hard to the breaking point! They need God and love and also some relax time even God rested after creation I can’t imagine poor Phelps winning and not enjoying and being depressed!!

I’m not sure I understand 🤷🏿. Micheal Phelps long term goal was clearly to be the best - ever. This is exactly what it takes! It was Phelps choice. What is your goal?

This is my second lecture of him. Love some of his ideas but this guy seemed to have adopted "All work no play" mentality. As we know... they may give you those golden goodies but makes "Jack a dull boy"... In this case no wonder Phelps slumped into depression or what not. Life is NOT about that. You can eat your cake and have it too! There are many many GOATS across the world across the board who did NOT adopt this stoic, self-abusive, beat-your-self-up till head bleeds mentality.

When I was in high school I kind of got into a tussle. The English teacher later found out and we had a discussion about it in classroom. Something she said that stood with me for years although she was not by any means a favorite teacher of mine. She said: "All these people who are cheering you on, they are the ones who will not be in the 'ring'."
The sacrifice it takes to achieve such a high level of competence... only 0.001% can make it. But most people don't realize the amount of tunnel vision and PRESSURE it takes to be all-consuming about a single-pointed goal in life which drives one M-E-N-T-A-L. At the end, one really wonders just like Mike Tyson if all these medals or belts laden with gold and heavy AF are really worth anything if you didn't enjoy the journey and the process and didn't stop to smell the roses.
All these people who are cheering him on and the coach who seems to be a hard-axx are NOT the ones to be in the water. Thus it is VERY easy to salivate at the LUST of medals and "being champion" and chestbeating numero uno and Greatest of all Time but not willing to taste the HORRIBLE taste of sacrifices - whether it be a simple casual Saturday night pizza and movies or just playing with your child.
And then there were those god-level Taoist people who take the EASY way out and STILL achieves SUPERHUMAN mastery. (Kids can do it... they learn stuff effortlessly via 'play' and imagination. It's the EGOIC mind which likes to SUFFER.)
