In this Gold Medal Minute takeover of the SwimSwam Podcast, we dive deep on butterfly with Coach Bob Bowman.
During this pandemic, the COVID (coronavirus) shutdown has impact my brain chemistry in a bad way, bringing me down. Talking with The Butterfly Guru, the man behind Michael Phelps, was the perfect medicine. I hope it's good medicine for you too. We cover age group butterfly challenges to elite training to what swimmers and coaches need to be thinking when striving for butterfly mastery.
We all know Bob's fly knowledge runs deep. We know Bob's an Olympic coach, a hall of famer, and that he helms Arizona State University, but did you know Bob was a flyer his entire competitive career? "I swam it going back to summer league," Bob explained. I loved learning that and more in this 30-minute butterfly swimming clinic.
SWIMNERD QUESTION
Where did Bob swim in college and how fast was his 100 yard butterfly?
Also, if you have butterfly questions you'd like to ask Bob, share them here. I'll ask Bob to drop back in. I think this is a topic we could cover again and again.

I hope you continue with this content after the lockdown ends. Mel interviewing athletes and coaches is always an interesting watch.
Thanks... I will... Working on it now...
Just dropped Ray Looze Breaststroke Wisdom - swimswam.com/swimswam-podcast-ray-looze-on-what-makes-a-perfect-breaststroke/
@@SwimSwamTV I saw, it was very interesting. Coincidentally was also the exact episode I was going to suggest, thanks.
I would have loved to hear Bowman's take on Kieran Smith and Kristof Milak.
'Love to come back to this from time to time... call in an "interview," call it a "discussion," call it a give and take -- fact is, this is a Master Clinic on how to train butterfly... honest work + working smart... just so well done!!
Great stuff. Very informative. GMM is really very humble about what a good flyer he was.
true
This was AMAZING! Thanks, @Melstewart @SwimSwam I can't wait to get back in the pool! Hopefully, they will open next week!
Great information Thankyou
Great stuff!! This put me in a better mind set to train fly!!! The past few weeks I was doing set of 100 fly for conditioning but my stroke was starting to fall apart towards the second 50. After watching this I'm gonna dial it back to 25's and 50's. Maybe hit a 75. Keep the stroke integrity.
Excellent video
Timeless wisdom.
Thanks Mel and Coleman, this was AMAZING!! Especially indulgent for us 2fliers! For years I've heard Bob reference the Barrowman medicine ball routine, but Google is failing me and I can't find a single reference. Any help?!?
Can't wait to be able to that 45x50 fly set...
Interestingly, Mike Barrowman was my roommate for all USA National Team trips.... I'll ask him to come and explain.... Since Bob brought it up, we need to cover it. Thank you!
@@SwimSwamTV Just a reminder to make this happen!
@@SwimSwamTV Yes searched everywhere, would love to add this dry land training until our pools open up again!
@@SwimSwamTV Love to add this to my routine!
@@SwimSwamTV Please make this happen! It would be so cool!
Go Tribe! GO!!!
damn hows does he remembers all those timings per event
This is very informative… but I can't believe this interview being so butterfly centric didn't mention the current 200 fly world record holder Kirstof Milak, unbelievable!
Wow, Phelps qualified 1st and 2nd 200 fly swims after only doing a 200 fly 3 times in practice, then repeats with an AG record only a few months later w/ the same low distance fly practicing
Kristof milak has the most beautiful rythym and kick
"I think you oversold it" Bob Bowman
Crazy right...? You coach Michael Phelps, and I oversold Bob's fly wisdom...? Not at all...
@@SwimSwamTV 😀
Hey Mel, when it comes to the 100 fly do the same key concepts in the 200 fly apply?
What was wrong with the training in 1970’s- Counsilman Era?
What are some distinctions?
Mel, it was rude to put Coleman on the spot by asking about his 200 fly PBs in front of Bob.
Sorry...it's slipped out... but I thought it was important. We all train with swimmers who are elites, but they BRING IT in practice everyday. They keep you honest and make you great...and many swimmers who are not elites swim well beyond PBs. They WOW you with improvement. I swam with a guy, Eric Toppe, who did not have talent. He earned every time drop imaginable. On pure grit he went from 0 to making the Olympic Trials final over 4 year. I strongly believe you can achieve a lot in swimming based entirely on how much work you're willing to invest.
