These Players' Cards Are in DANGER

  • Baseball superstars are starting out the year SLOW. This is not anything abnormal as some players start they year slow before turning it on later in the summer. It is a long season, but at times it can be challenging to not get caught up in good and bad starts. This is very prevalent in sports cards as we can see drastic swings in card values. In this episode the Spitballin' team discusses players who started out hot and cold and what is happening with their cards.

    15.40. Philmington distilled the whole hobby into one great point right there. Hype drives prices far more than performance. It's literally better to not be playing than playing well. The anticipation of a player doing well impacts prices more than when the player actually plays well. When a guy actually plays well it's time to move on. It's quirky alright, lol.

    I've been extremely consistent with my collecting habits. I have collected the same player since 1988 (Nolan Ryan), had a 2 year period in the early 90s I added Steve Avery to my collection, then ended that, and my secondary collection is Ken Griffey Jr. But he is only like 2-3% of my collection. I do have a "general" collection of several players including Michael Jordan, but Nolan Ryan is a pretty serious collection I have on him. Have never waivered, but I'm strictly a collector. I have all of Nolan Ryan early cards, but i mainly just focus on current on card auto cards in low numbered parallels on him, preferably /5 or 1/1.

    It doesn’t matter how many cards you have if nobody will remember you. Goldy may have less cards but he’s forgettable now and he’s actually good, imagine how forgettable he will be when his career is actually over. Ohtani is just getting started. I know it hurts to put that kind of money into ohtani all at once but you just need one card. Secure one within your budget that you are happy with and you will be fine. Plus you already have Mookie so having the guy who will be batting behind him for the next 10 years will be even more fun for you to keep up with. Ohtani is can’t miss. Period.

In any event i knew nothing about the Dodgers incredible line up until just recently; obviously i was aware that Ohtani was coming here to LA but I had not watched any sports for the most part in a couple years. I watched highlights of Ohtani just last night - he did go 4-4 but i gotta say he makes it look effortless. Pop ups, seemingly pop ups, like doesn't sound like much or look like much coming off the bat yet clearing the fence in dead center. It's impressive. I couldn't imagine that the hype wasn't overdone. I look forward to the hobby’s over reaction to a player having an injury, a slow start or a bad month. This is often the best time to buy key cards for long term hold. I bought a 2018 Bowman Chrone Ohtani green refractor auto right after his first injury in his second season for $500. They’re selling for huge money today, tens of thousands. Similar to fliers on risky stocks…the huge winner more than covers a few misses.

      That’s an interesting thought experiment.

      Hi, let me explain more. I have very limited hobby funds. Usually it’s from cards I sell to buy other cards. For me, I collect Mookie, Goldschmidt, Arenado, Trout, Greinke, Butler, and a few Rockies players. If I were to buy an Ohtani I would need to sell cards I really love to get an Ohtani I don’t have any excitement to own. The cards of Ohtani that I would be excited to own are too far out of my budget currently. A blue bowman chrome auto for example in a good grade is 15-20k. For that reason I’d rather have a Goldschmidt red that I like in my pc and I still think would gain value. If I were to own a card that I don’t like looking at I’d just end up selling it.
      So for me it’s not that I think Ohtani is a bad buy, but rather it just doesn’t do anything for me and my collection. I’m cool just buying the players I like even if it’s not the best ROI move. Hopefully that explains it better!

      75 is required? I didnt know there was an actual requirement. I looked up the first baeman hall of fame average. Its 65 but the numbers are all over too. Some are low. Some are high. It doesn't seem fair that there can be a first baseman in the hall that doesnt have a 75 but the new inductees are required. Especially when the average is 65.

    • @scottiebcards2354
      @scottiebcards2354 2 месяца назад +4

      I personally think he is in. Here is why:
      The average HOF first baseman has a 7 year peak war of 42.0 Goldschmidt is at 45.0. Freeman for example is currently at 39.5. On top of that the average first base JAWS (average of total war and 7 year peak) is 53.4 Goldschmidt is at 53.2.
      Goldschmidt has 4 top 3 MVP finishes and an MVP. He also has 5 other years in the top 20 MVP voting. He is one of two first baseman ever to have 300+ HR AND 150+ SB. Meaning he’s one of the best power speed 1B ever alongside Jeff Bagwell.
      Goldschmidt also has 5 SS at 1B which is the most EVER at the 1B position.
      He is also not done accumulating hits, HR, and WAR. With Helton getting in, Goldschmidt will get in. The next few years will determine if he is a 1-2 ballot hof or a 5-6 ballot hof, but he will get in.

    • @scottiebcards2354

    Hey there guys, been watching your videos for a while now and commenting for the first time now to take up for Scottie on the Ohtani/Goldy debate! 😂 So he admitted to actually liking Goldschmidt and being a collector of him. He never said Ohtani wasn’t a great investment or that he’d never invest in him at all, her merely admitted that the collector side of him won out and preferred buying a nice card of someone he actually collects over someone who is a generational player but not one he personally collects!

    • @SemperDeFi
      @SemperDeFi 2 месяца назад +1

      Having said that - as a lifelong Braves fan who actually collects Acuna and Braves legends (yes pitchers even Maddux/Glavine/Smoltz) - if I had the chance to nab an extremely rare Acuna or one of our 90’s legends the collector in me would take them all day long over Ohtani! And I actually have some Ohtani cards bc I believe he’s a great investment. But the best part about our hobby is that there really is no wrong way to collect, we all have different likes/styles and that’s what makes us unique as collectors! So I would never bash anybody over picking the player the collect and love over someone who might be a better investment money-wise. Will ohtani go down in the books as one of the all-time greatest players? Perhaps - but you can’t put a price tag on childhood memories (in my case) growing up watching the greatest dynasty in the history of sports (90’s Braves baseball)! I respect that Scotty has enough balls to go after his guys and hold off on the bandwagon of great players like Ohtani - even if he is indeed a good investment, he’s sticking to his collector’s heart!

    Personally I would dump and sell all Ohtani cards. Hes a gimmicky player. There is a very good reason why many do not support pitching and hitting. He was young previously, however he will start getting injured more often. This year he will suck, he's injured. Next year he will suck, as he will be recovering. Don't get scared about collecting pitchers. Luis Gil just recovered from TJ, and he's on fire. Stop using analytics to make final judgements on what cards to collect, use it as a tool but shouldnt be the end all. Pick your team, watch your players and you will be surprised on what you can predict.
