Are Ronald Acuna Jr Cards Doomed?

  • Ronald Acuna Jr tore his ACL on Sunday afternoon. Acuna also tore his ACL in 2021 in the opposite knee. Acuna was able to bounce back and win the 2023 NL MVP and be an All-Star. In this video the Spitballin' team shares their thoughts on Acunas injury and if we think that he can return to his MVP form like he did after his first injury. We also discuss if Acuna's cards will have hobby relevance and value in the short and long term

I collect vintage and modern. It’s awesome collecting players from the current era that you can watch in person, on your fantasy team, it gives you an extra reason to root for them. What’s fun about vintage is being a baseball historian, reading up on players from 50-100 years ago and seeing how they changed baseball forever makes it fun collecting those players

For Ron Jr when he does come back healthy he might not be able to steal bases but he is still capable of 30 plus homer’s in a season so maybe DH would be a safe option.

Also...Ricky (and Kareem) were both early with the whole stretching/yoga craze. Not a coincidence they played their respective sports into their 40s. It think a lot of athletes in their mid/late 20s don't take this seriously...they think they're tendons/ligaments etc are still like a childs..and they're clearly not.

Though their games and positions are vastly different, I think Acuna’s future might be akin to Don Mattingly, who was a beloved Yankee, played for no other team, did some absurd things offensively for a couple years in his mid-20s, then saw a big drop in performance beginning in his age 27 season. There were still gold gloves and a couple all-star appearances, but it was never the same. And a sure-fire HOF career ended with a career WAR in the low 40s and forever talks of what might have been. And, yet, Mattingly rookies are still very collectible. He holds a soft spot in the hearts of many.

Hi Guys. Good topic here. Modern Cards like Acuna AT the high "baked in" values that they have are way too risky. Prices of Ronald Acuna Jr are based on him being a Hall of Famer and Playing for 15 to 20 years. Not to Mention Way too many Population cards. Go for older Vintage cards from the 1960's or 1970's of Hall of Fame Baseball players that may be underpriced. Cheers.

He isnt the same guy clean as we saw lighting MLB on fire 3 years ago. Great stuff guys. ACL is a small ligament. You can have an isolated ACL tear that doesn't hurt...at all. Or you can tear the ACL, have a big meniscal tear, torque injury with bone bruises and a ton of blood in the joint ...yaddah yaddah... and those hurt like hell. I found it silly to hear the media quote an athlete assessing their own injury. Chris--off top of my head, two guys I remember who came back successfully..in football...Frank Gore (same knee X 2) and Terry Allen (possibly different knees?) If someone can come back as a RB, it certainly is in play for Acuna.

I should just be a guest speaker on the show sometime!! :) My opinion as to why Acuna’s prices were stagnant during his MVP 2023 season were due to 1 big factor and 1 small one. In 2023 MLB had two star players actually more exciting than Acuna. 1) Ohtani’s hobby love during the summer of 2023 was like a vacuum for all the hobby money. Ohtani’s market value dominated baseball for months - overshadowing Acuna’s amazing season. At the National in 2023, it was all Ohtani, and almost nothing for Acuna. 2) Elly De La Cruz, to a far lesser extent, also became more exciting to watch (and collect) than Acuna. So, I believe Acuna’s 2023 prices remained static due to Ohtani’s market absolutely dominating the money in the hobby, and then Elly came into the league with very exciting hype and also overshadowed Acuna.

His two monster seasons are 4 years apart, not to mention he’s not a disciplined hitter, an average at best fielder, and his war is avg at 5.8. He is unfortunately toast in the sport and in the hobby. Any other assessment is just adult men convincing themselves that their “investment” in him is still justified, but in their alone time, they know they are screwed.
The sweet spot for “investing” in any player, any sport is and always has been after roughly 5 years of consistent solid production.

Tough topic to talk about. As far as what to do with his cards, there’s no right answer for everyone. Ask yourself why you bought the card to begin with. That may help guide you on what to do next.
I completely agree with what was said towards the end-this is making me reevaluate how I spend hobby dollars. Becoming a vintage collector isn’t appealing to me, but maybe I need to take a somewhat more conservative approach to current players.

Shout of to my GF hailey for listening to my depressive talk after ronald's injury. As a Braves longtime fan, Ronnie been my favorite player since watching videos of him as a prospect. I just really hate that some athletes can't ever hit their full potential due to "being too athletic for their own body." Such a shame man. Last year was magical for him and I can't imagine going through something like that not once but twice. I also work in physical therapy and tbh the physical part with ACLs or any ligament damage isn't the problem during rehab (if surgery goes well), It's all mental once you're cleared for sports again. When do you start to trust that leg again, or do you ever trust it long term? Thats what scares me long term. Will we ever see him be the ronnie of his MVP type season again, probably not. I don't wanna be all negative so the only optimistic thing I could say is that maybe he will shock the world and come back and prove me and everyone else wrong. He did it once but idk if he can again as he ages. A Braves 2025 or 26 World Series with ronnie being MVP would make for a killer 30 for 30 though.🤣

Here's the thing, the market is still going thru the correction of the pandemic boom. Almost every card was way overvalued across the board. So even with great seasons, momentum was not favoring price increases. This trend isn't even sport specific. Ultra modern has never been a good investment unless you are flipping or doing very short term. If you're holding for any length of time, 99% of cards go down, and that applies to every player.

@SpitballinCards we've seen examples of even cards like x fractors and other 1 of 1s drop dispite championships and great seasons ( Luka comes to mind immediately). Even now though, Victor is another that dispite having a great rookie of the year campaign, most of his have fallen by half or more. The shear amount of cards regardless of rarity or perceived rarity ( dozens of low numbered parallels for example). The supply outweighs the demand eventually.
