    JF-17's main selling points are its affordability & maintenance cost. It's a platform with AESA radars and long range BVR missiles, Anti-ship missiles, air to ground missiles and HOBS missiles at 1/3rd the cost of other aircrafts with same feature-sets. The Jeff block-3 has everything which Tejas has to offer with lower over all cost. Note that newer advance version of Tejas hasn't rolled out yet. The one in service should be compared with the latest of JF-17 block in service. And again the cost of upcoming version would be atleast twice of JF-17. JF-17 is perfect for Pakistan and its threat matrix. PAF already has inducted 165+ JF-17s. A combination of J-10Cs, F-16s & JF-17s provide good air-defense and strike capabilities.

      what are the factors you are comparing and saying that it's somewhat affordable and have low maintainance cost.how can you say that?
      i accept the truth that plane is affordable but there's a catch. there is reliability issue with the plane as engines are either russian origin or chinese and they can never compete with more reliable engines of west.if you have inducted a plane that have 50%-60% reliable how can you say these words..and for block-1 it's price was less..if you compare the price with jf17-block 3 version then you will get to know that price is somewhat comparable with other planes of modern fighters.don't get carried away looking at price of jf17 block 1.
      but to keep in mind that jf17 had upper edge on tejas when it comes to bvr missiles as of now. jf17 has already inducted pl12 missiles somewhat range around 100-120 km while tejas with derby has range around 70-80km as of now. tejas still don't flying with full potential as astra bvr mark 2 is still to be fired from tejas.

    • @vm8136
      @vm8136 Год назад +5

      The affordability is only wrt acquisition cost and not wrt maintenance cos it seems to require a lot of maintenance given it has an all metal airframe, Russian engine and Chinese manufacturing quality
      Further, the block 1 & 2 do not have AESA radar, no in flight refueling, only 2d fly by wire, lower thurst weight ratio, poor electronic capabilities and no American/western weapons
      Even the block 3 retains the same Russian rd93 based engines, uses cheaper air cooled AESA radar and same metal body and build quality
      There is a reason why western fighter aircrafts are costly. PAF might have wanted to compromise on the associated quality to fill up its numbers and use f16s for the real thing but then you have to understand that these jf17s are made only to fill up the numbers and maybe start some local aircraft assembly, but nothing more than that

      @@vm8136 That's an illogical assessment that an airforce inducted a long visioned and planned aircraft just for showcase and not the "real" thing. I suggest you to put aside the bias and look at the facts. JF-17 was the primary fighter in most numbers in PAF's swift retort in 2019. PAF used total of 25 aircrafts in that operation and could have used ALL of F-16s but JF-17s were used in more numbers because airforce had the confidence to take it to hostile airspace. I wonder how come you shoot the statement saying "poor electronic capabilities". The fact is JF-17 block 1 & 2 have electronic capabilities comparable to F-16 block 52s. Even the western commentators agree that chinese electronic capability has surpassed Russians many years ago. Google this "Why China's Latest Jets Are Surpassing Russia's Top Fighters" you will find a nice article to enlighten yourself. There is a reason why Chinese had stripped off their Flankers and all J-15s, J-16s from russian radars or EW components. We all know how advance china have gone even in commercial tech like 5g, only country to have its own space station, AI etc. It will be naive to think that there most focused area which is military & defense would have sub-standard equipment. You passed lot of false statements like about in-flight refueling. JF-17s block II (which are most in numbers) all have in-air fueling and there's tons of videos and photos for that on internet already. The aircraft is design to have a longer life and lower maintenance cost. Its upto you if pay heed to propaganda blogs for total bs stories with no ground, no source, no photo evidence OR go with official records. The aircraft was designed at first place to fullfill needs of the PAF and cater for Pakistan's threat matrix. It was designed & developed especially knowing that PAF may not get any western aircrafts due to sanctions, so it had to get the top capabilities in it with modular design. Lastly, about some "assembly capabilities". PAC Kamra has an entire aviation city, even the radars (ofcourse chinese ToT) are being developed locally. So its not "some". Its quite a lot manufacturing capability is achieved. The next decade will forsure see its successor. All being said, I am no where comparing anything with india. India is already much ahead in localization and manufacturing overall.

    The statement that many analysts make, "JF17 is not a success for West and its allies but it's a big achievement for Pakistan !" .......
    is laughable in its own sense, I mean its like someone made his dream home in a town and someone says that this house is not an achievement for town people but a big achievement for its owner ! 🤡😁🤣
    pffff .... duh ....... JF17 was made by Pakistan (& China assisted) as per her needs, a low cost, reliable and multirole 4.5 gen fighter jet.
    JF17 was developed to fulfil requirements of PAF not of USAF, Europe or other big players.

      PLAAF does not want FC-1 due to its (a) limited performance and on top of that (b) its quality issues.
      The (a) was already a factor even while the plane was being designed (prior to production) with the PLAAF committing to no purchases of this plane. Ironically, even Pakistan (its main customer) was reluctant to buy this plane and was looking for 2nd hand Mirages 2000s and F-16 which it could not get.
      The (b) added to that after the plane was built not just with core design issues but quality of production issues as well.

    it is mostly the internet community from India and Pakistan that declare the failure or success of JF-17 program. almost all of them have little to no experience in the matter and the source of their arguments is only based on what they find favorable on the internet to support their PoV which is normally called confirmation bias.
    the Jet fulfils the requirements of Pakistani airforce and has become a workhorse for the PAF helping greatly the workload of F-16s which are PAF's top tier fighter jet.
    the Jet is way better than any other jet bar F-16 in PAF arsenal and in that sense alone it is a success story for PAF.
    what it does internationally in terms of sales exports vs other Soviet, Chinese and Western jets is a completely different matter. that is the league of the very big powerful boys, it has no chance regardless of its capabilities.
    And yes, I am also one of the nameless airmchair RUclips expert. so take my "analysis" as it suits you.

    The truely amazing parts of this project are the geopolitical twists through many historical events and unbelievable persistence of both sides that finally gave birth to a very competent aircraft. US company Gruman played a crutial part in the dev. What almost killed this project was not Tiananmen Square but rather the nuclear tests. And this project went from initially motivated by Sino-US honeymoon and Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, to the collapse of Soviet Union and US pulling plugs on all Chinese projects and then Russia coming in as supplier. User requirements had changed numerous times through the dev cycle. Consider this is essentially a Mig-21 based fighter it feels almost unreal.
    There is a very long series about the history of this jet in a very tiny Chinese YT channel, with huge amount of details. TBH I was shocked to learn the about-face US made as soon as the Soviets pulled out of Afghanistan.

The Americans were obsessed with preventing the Soviets access to warm water ports. Once it became clear that the Soviets had their own Vietnam to deal with, the Americans stopped worrying about it.
      For what it’s worth, the failure of the Soviets to subdue/pacify Afghanistan should have been enough to prevent the West to go in there. Billions spent and thousands killed for nothing.

    In terms of performance, it's not an F-16-series plane, its basically a reinvented F-20A 'Tigershark' but the 'Tigershark' seems more agile. I suspect that the JF-17 isn't really full option for Pakistan, the J-10CE is basically to fire the PL-15 at longer ranges than the JF-17 can and replace the and the JF-17 is a cheap replacement for older aircraft.

    • @MrBahjatt
      @MrBahjatt Год назад +4

      In terms of performance, the JF-17 isn't really up there. It's less agile than an F-16 or even F-20A, it's probably less agile than the Indian Tejas (which isn't really in production) but it's a leap over the Mirage III/5 and F-7P and possibly F-7PG. The best to describe it is like, "You just upgraded from Windows 95 to Windows 7 at a time when everybody just moving from Windows 10 to Windows 11" so it's a bit of as false upgrade but it was cheap and really improves on what you had.

    kinetically it's fairly mediocre(block 1 at least). It's way slower than the F-16 at literally every altitude, which makes it an underdog in the air to air role. It is however highly maneuverable. One of the best things about the JF-17 is its human computer interface. The ease of use of systems, start up, and employment of weapons is probably on of the best in the world. It's large screens also offer an advantage over other older fighters, like their F-16s. That and ofc its price, being that it is one of if not the cheapest brand new multi role fighters you can get.

    Ground crew and Chinese contractors are working to address issues with the RD-93 engine, which caused a JF-17 to be unable to taxi on the runway.
    Background:
    Myanmar signed a deal in early 2016 to procure 16 JF-17s from China for $25 million each.
    The first batch of six aircraft was delivered in 2018, but details about the other 10 remain unclear.

    Saying the Tejas is "more successful" is delusional. It's been rebuffed by every foreign country it's been offered to and currently sits at zero export customers. The JF-17 has three export customers, with the latest being Iraq.

    • @mth469
      @mth469 Год назад +1

      All 3 customers (Nigeria, Myanmar and Pakistan) have grounded the plane due to major reliability and safety issues.
      The aircraft is practically offered for free by China, but countries are not signing up for it.
      Even the PLAAF won't buy the plane.

    The Pakistanis and Chinese have already started trials for a block 4 version of the JF-17. There is even a picture of it taking off.
    This is a good video, and the timeline of production and varients is really good. But the negative "tone" of it is not understandable. Perhaps the narrator has an unconcious bias against Pakistan/Chinese work or what?!. The sentiment expressed at the end of the video.... "compared to other competitors, the JF-17 is not-so-successful, but it is an impressive achievement for Pakistan"... is an odd statement. Even he says that the project achieved its aims. Compare that to the Tejas which is yet to mature after many decades of road bumps and failures. The block 3 version of the JF-17 is a 4+ gen aircraft that offers everything you expect from it at a much cheaper cost. That is not something to take lightly. Furthermore, the plane has been tried and tested in real world conflicts on several occassions, both in A to A and A to G combat. It carried out its missions successfully on each occassion. Other countries that are known to be in the negotiation stage for the block 3 version are Argentina and Serbia.

      The block 3 version has a cheaper air cooled AESA radar, retains older Russian mig29 rd93 based engines, uses pod based electronic warfare, doesn’t have sensor fusion and nor does it have secure data links, forget about any active/shape stealth features. Unimaginable to even think of it having supercruise and supermanouverablity. How in this world can you classify it as 4+ gen?

    • @69columbus
      @69columbus Год назад +3

      @@vm8136 your comment is based on a mishmash of information. Some of it is somewhat accurate, while the rest is simply unadulterated misinformation. This could be due to you having no understanding of what defines a successful project, or perhaps your dogmatic adherence to preconceived ideas about Chinese/Pakistan technology and procurement.
      A lot of what you define as old technology is/has been gradually upgraded (even within the same block variant.) This includes pilots already having integrated helmet mounted hud displays..ala the Euro fighter etc. So yes the plane is now a 4+ gen aircraft... albeit a lower cost, no frills example of one.
      The program has been a remarkable success when considering the scope, timing, the budget set for it, the SME that has been achieved over the course of the program, lessons learnt for future variants..etc etc. I can go on but I won't.
      Then you have the fact that the PAF got exactly what it was looking for in its search for a replacement for their aging fleet of old Chinese and Western fleet.
      Add to that, the fact that the jet fighter proved itself in actual combat in several air and land engagements against multiple opponents, and we're talking block 1/2 variants here which aren't 4+ gen.
      Add to this that trials for block 4 varients are underway.
      Add to this that there are no less than seven countries in negotiations to have it (not including the 3 that have already purchased it.)
      If all of the above is not an example of highly successful project to produce a simple, lower cost 4+ gen jet fighter, then I know nothing about aircraft, nor do I know anything about project management. And I have worked on projects for the aviation industry.

    The fact that the JF-17 Thunder tried to make no breakthrough was a cause of it becoming somewhat of a breakthrough.
    JF-17 is inferior in almost every aspect to every other fighter in its category (of light tactical fighter), yet it's decent for both nations currently using them.
    Is it amazing? No, but also yes. Is it trash? Again, no, but also yes. Context matters.
    BTW Tejas technologically superior (as of now) & costlier, but JF-17 is more affordable, easier to operate, etc.. So, stop comparing. It's like comparing a pear & noodles.
