Wow it is amazing how very small changes or adjustments can make such an enormous impact on a craft. The paint scheme for one, the wing increase and change of cockpit position sets this Viper on🔥
Japan wanted to develop all of its fighter jets domestically. However, the US did not allow this and forced Japan to jointly develop them based on the F-16. In the end, Japanese technology was shared with the US, and that technology was used in subsequent fighter jets such as the F-22, but American technology was not shared with Japan.
Got to see one up close and talked to the pilot for a while. They are nothing like the F-16's we had at Hill AFB. They are much bigger and heavier. The wing is thicker and bigger, the tail is redesigned and you can see bulges on the fuselage for extra fuel. Inside the cockpit is completely different. The pilot said the US wouldn't sell them the HUD, fire control and avionics so everything is locally produced. It was a sharp looking fighting machine and it seems like a test bed for their next gen fighters.
The American F-16 is designed to be an air-to-ground attack aircraft and air-to-air interceptor... but the Japanese F-2 developed as a multi-role fighter with anti-ship capabilities! An all-around fighter/attack aircraft... because Japan cannot build power projecting aircraft carriers. Amazing.
Currently, JASDF is officially not using the word 'support fighter jet' since 2005, same as Attack aircraft, there isn't special meaning. Air superiority fighter had been replaced almost per decade. F86F→F104→F4Phantom→F15 Dozens F86F couldn't retire, and had been reused as a bomber, it was the begining of support fighter jet. Support fighter jet didn't be changed soon as like this video's history, last one was deployed until 1980. 1:48 F-1's lifespan was enlarged 3500h to 4050h. 4:20 Agile Falcon was offered plan to Europe, not Japan. US offered plan to Japan is called (agile falcon based ) F-16 SX-3(Plan only) which has 1m shorter length than F-2, and wasn't enough data to be a reference. The wing area has similarity but F-2's wing area is unofficially approx. 375 sq ft on the web, length, weight, purpose, required combat ranges, wide LERX are totally different. If F-2's wing was same as the agile falcon, YF-22 didn't be current F-22. 7:24 Horizontal tail, not vertical tail. F-2 has TDL called JDCS(F), broadband software wireless, faster than link16. But just be used in JSDF. F-2A has IEWS(ECM/ESM etc) sensor fusion before Rafale equips SPECTRA. 9:07 This update proposal was for F-2B, and LM also was not very serious about this. 12:21 European fighters also much delayed or no schedule equip AESA radar over 20 years to all of them. ???? F-2 has a certain Off Boresight capability without JHMCS. 12:49 18 of F-2 built since 2005 has FLIR, AN/AAQ-33 was equipped in 2015. Mission computer, ASM-3 series, Link16 etc are all in one set of update program, has been begining since 2020. Japan's constitution 9th isn't so absolute as old fakemedia's Chinese or Korean reports to the world, stand-off missile also same as IZUMO upgrade. ASM-3A is already in deployment. Famous F-2 unit cost is because of MoF Japan added on accounting the schedule delayed penalty fee at GD factory line.
Thanks for your interest and some of your corrections. But, we think there are some misunderstandings here. As you corrected Japan abandoned to use the support fighter term in 2005, not 2015. We apologize for our mistake. We did not intend to mention the history of support fighters, but to give a piece of base information. So, we did not mention all aircraft and F-1 lifespan extension modernization. The Agile Falcon programme was developed for the USAF as a low-coast alternative of the ATF Programme, not for the Europeans. We said that F-2 is an aircraft that was jointly developed based on Agile Falcon. not a Japanese version of it. We never say that the wingspans of the F-2 and F-16 same. We also used an animation, which shows the difference. We found the vertical tail information from Jane's All The Worlds Aircraft. We say that the F-16s of the US Air Force do not have brake-chute, not all F-16s. When we use the year 1983, we intended to refer to the year of the finished product for testing. In our respective, to begin to develop and to develop are different cases. We did not intend to tell the story of the T-2 CCV. We just told a part of the story related to the F-2. Link 16 is not only about data transfer speed but also about transferring video footage. So, a faster Link 11 is not more advanced than Link 16. As we mentioned in our NSM and Izumo videos, as you also say, Japan could interpret the constitution. But, in the current situation, there is no official announcement for the procurement or development of a stand-off missile. So, Japan has not chosen to interpret its constitution for this topic yet. According to the official statement, Japan allocated a budget for the acquisition of the ASM-3A missile in 2021. We cannot reach a confirmation for the delivery of the missile. We hope we managed to express ourselves more clearly. If you have more objections and corrections, we would be glad to find a chance to express ourselves more clearly or correct our mistakes.

Originally, Japan wanted the U.S. to provide the FA-18 Super Hornet. However, the U.S. did not agree. Just as they once refused to provide the F14 Tomcat. So, Japan made a magical modification (redesign) based on the F16 to create the pseudo-FA18. This is the F2. In terms of performance, it is close to the FA18. So it can be said that the F2 is superior to the F16.
It can carry an IRST pod. Also it literally has electronic systems rivalling the F-22 and F-35, with capabilities such as datalink networking for target acquisition, MLC & Dy control modes, fire on lock 3D RWR capabilities, and more.
A F-16 knockoff is better than not having 4th gen fighters to face North Korean MIG-29s. Kudos to the Japanese military industries for trying their efforts.
This is a very weird program, which produced a capable weapon fighter, but not superior enough to the F16 to justify the time delay and the huge costs of development which bloated to absurd levels. If the F-16 was not enough, in1987, I guess an F18 would have done the Job. It reminded me of the F-1, which was technically a Jaguar redesigned from scratch with the same engines and capabilities. This is generally the extreme solution for nations who cannot get access to off shelf product due to political restrictions, but what has this to do with Japan? Europe aircraft companies build their own design to become independent from the USA, but Japan didn't even got that: the F2 still relies on General Dynamic design and manufacturing for most of its parts and in the end had no hope to sell abroad to share some of the development costs.
There is nothing weird or financially absurd about the F-2 program. The money was spent to hugely expand japans industry capabilities. This includes modern composite structure development and production, avionics, electronics, weapons, aerodynamics etc. Without the F-2 program Japan would not be the main partner nation in the 777, 787 and other Boeing and LM programs. Export of the F-2 was not a considering factor in the 1990s, since the Japanese constitution prohibited any arms export from Japan until 2019 (??) The F-2 was a huge success for Japan and worth every cent.

"F-2 program Japan would not be the main partner nation in the 777, 787 and other Boeing and LM programs" F2 program doesn't have much thing to do with these civil planes. The original intention of F2 is very well designed: creating an indigenous fighter that have comparable performance with F16. But the result is very depressing as it ends up with an fighter that is inferior than F16 but much costly than that. To be honest, i don't think Japanese designers have much experience gain from it as LM did the most of the work
@@donchen4906 Yes the money was spent very useful. The F-2 program brought the Japanese aviation and manufacturing industrial capabilities to a point, that Japan was able to be a partner in almost all major aviation projects in the. world and the money they spent on the F-2 was regained several times over already. JSDAF needs additional fleet of 90 new built upgraded Block IV variant of the MITSUBISHI F-2E (Block III) multi role interdictor strike fighter no matter what they say . . . would be great if the MITSUBISHI F-2E (Block III) multi role interdictor strike fighter was made available for foreign air forces like IAF & Emirati Air Force etc . . . infact the MITSUBISHI F-2E (Block III) multi role interdictor strike fighter could be marketed as a future iteration of the legendary F-16V Fighting Falcon (Block 72+) multi role interdictor strike fighter by MITSUBISHI & Lockheed Martin instead of so many upgraded variants of the F-16E Fighting Falcon (Block 50+) multi role fighter . . .
Japan constitution untill now prohibited selling weapons abroad, especially to nations involved in any kind of war theatre. this disqualify both Israel and EAU
But...
What if USAF could decides to integrate what it's mostly an American product to supplement their F-35?
No way: too late (the product lines have been disassembled) and too expensive at 110M$ of twenty years ago.
The Mitsubishi F-2 are mostly a waste of money. Japan would have been much better served with F-15E Strike Eagles, even with the added expense of Japanese customization. ⛩ 🇯🇵
You can't seriously believe there will be BLOCK III right? The fighter is less capable than F16v but cost even higher than F15J.

Imagine if Japan supported the lavi instead of the f16
No one wants the conformal fuel tanks on their Vipers. They fix a big shortcoming of the viper. You would think everyone would love them.
Most air forces operating F-16's are using jets that aren't plumbed for conformal tanks, including the USAF.
Too bad many engineers were working on this project were getting old. Golden parachute(retirement plan ) had to be met. This F-16J came out to be more expensive than regular U.S F-16C/D32.
I would rather the Japanese had made the original design with two engines and a wing setup like the euro fighter and rafale

How does the F-2 compare to the new F-16V that Taiwan is getting??
Night and day difference. You realize the F2 was developed in the 80's, right?
I hope they get all the YF-23 rights.
Why would they? They didn't have anything to do with it, and don't own any of its design.
@@danielh1708 There were rumors online floating around that Japan was developing a YF-23 derived airframe. This was due to the fact the 25DMU concept study they looked at had a similar configuration to it with a V tail. (it also had some differences though, such as 3 axis TVC, an IRST, and a somewhat different shape it's delta wing. Other F-X concept designs have since shared in this V-tail design, however the project as a whole has been rolled up in with GCAP.
@@user-Xx0xxxxx They may have been copying it the best they could, but they didn't have any access to anything YF-23 official.
Its quite close to F16 but here's the catch for the price of 4 F16 you can buy just 1 of this Mitsubishi F2
japan is living in 2122
Taiwan should have this fighter it's far more superior then the f16v which they have for their frontline fighter
Sadly it won't, Japan doesn't sell weapons and military equipment. If Taiwan ask they wont sell even one since it conflict their constitution

Over 90% of the aircraft was redesigned by Japan and the material of the aircraft was replaced with carbon fiber. The structure of the wing is a fastenerless structure made of adhesive, which was the first technology in the world. The cruising range is extended, and up to four large anti-ship missiles can be mounted. Equipped with the world's first AESA radar. Many carbon technologies were adopted on the Boeing 787

If or when CCP/PRC's PLA-AF attacks Japan to try and stop support against defending ROC country Taiwan from CCP Invasion, the Japanese public would care not so much about smaller 'domestic' political problems, only worry with increasing anger about PRC's possible real actions versus their stated intent;

Juste une copie conforme du F16. C'est peut-être un bon avion mais ils ne sont pas très imaginatifs les Japonais..
We’re better at modifying existing things than we are at building new ones
Japanese F-2s are just as good as Isreal F-16s or better. Twiked out radars and longer range, lighter bigger wings with more fuel. Retiring F-2s should bought by Tawain. Japan getting F-35a and F-35b's.

No IRST. ASEA radar isnt enough to be called 4++. The engine intakes dont seem to protected from radar emissions.
Export of the F-2 was not a considering factor in the 1990s, since the Japanese constitution prohibited any arms export from Japan until 2019 (??)
The F-2 was a huge success for Japan and worth every cent.
The Mitsubishi F-2 are mostly a waste of money. Japan would have been much better served with F-15E Strike Eagles, even with the added expense of Japanese customization. ⛩ 🇯🇵
@@xyzaero But is those money spent useful? Did japan build their own 5 gen fighters by themselves? So what could this be any difference if there is no such F2 program.
Fighter programs are political and industrial juggernauts and have often very little to do with defense itself. Furthermore the F-2 was a huge step forward and is an excellent platform for Japan's needs
@@user-kc1tf7zm3b no it is not a waste of money. you are only very short sighted. Japan wanted to develop it's own platform and develop new industrial capabilities. Customizing the Eagle would not have done the job.
