The problem is that different people will inevitably have differing moral codes, and the intention of the rule of law is to some extent codify a common minimum standard (however imperfect) code of conduct. Failure to even abide by this has serious consequences that leads to a state of both lawlessness but also a breakdown even in any sense of shared morality.

When I retired from the Army I got a job offer from a PMC the next day to be a security guard in Afghanistan. I wasn’t even combat arms and one of the most comfortable MOS.
US Navy. March 1964 to February 1968. 25 total months in Vietnam. PMC from 1968 to 1980. I used my winnings to go to college and then law school. Once I graduated from law school in 1980 I never did PMC work again.
