Love the family sounds. Your daughter sounds adorable. Great video! Thanks so much. New to leathercraft and having hard time with gussets. This is fantastic. Thanks again.
Gary I love your work! And I really like hearing you speaking and sharing your thoughts. It makes your videos even more appealing. Your daughter sounds adorable!
Love this video! Great explanation on how you figure out your gusset length. I like being as precise as possible so this will make my life so much happier. Estimating the length has always bugged me so this way will definitely work better for me! Thank you very much!! I wrote the previous part before finishing the video so I just had to add: the part about stitching was so hilarious and so true! And I agree about hand sewing versus machine stitching.
Hi Gary, I use an industrial cylinder machine for much of my bag assembly, but there are still spots on the bag where you just can’t access it with the cylinder arm and it requires hand sewing. As a female hand stitching some of these stiffer veg tans is really hard on my hands. Just punching the holes is a workout. Gussets have to be engineered correctly for machine joining in order to have space for the walking foot to travel. An industrial machine outfitted with the proper needle (triangle versus diamond point) does a beautiful job slanting stitches on the right or top side, but the back or bottom side never looks as good (or is as strong) as a well executed saddle stitch. The bottom machine stitches lay on the top surface of the leather rather than sinking down as they do on the top side. Some folks use a stitch wheel and run over the machine stitches on the backside to help set them in. The overlap seam you are doing with this bag I don’t believe can be done even with a cylinder arm and my guess only (since I don’t own one) is that a post bed machine would be needed. As with all things in leather craft there is no one size fits all for any tool and there are pluses and minuses to each technique. Thank you so much for your inspiring videos. Sandy
Far East Survival - it is therapeutic! I call it mindless work. It allows you to get in your nothing box where nothing exists but the needles and thread.
@@fanman8102 Yes these days I switched to a leather sewing machine to make bags. It's not as strong as a hand stitch but I can make a bag so much faster.
I like what I' ve seen but I want to see how you start your sewing, how you sew the corners, the hard parts! sewing straight on is easy. Could you do a video on this subject please?
Cute Bag, great video, I enjoyed the talk felt like, we were having a conversation 😁 I like how you sew the sides together, it has been a struggle for me. I am definitely trying this method in my next project. Thank you, my regards to your daughter😊
Great video. Beautiful daughter. Now, where can I get the pattern for doing this as I am brand new to this hobby. Do you recommend doing this on unfinished leather? What weight of leather was this? I too will give to my daughter who just turned 30 and got married.
this is excactly what i am looking for. this simple thick leather bag. selling at tourist street at south east asia. korean style is ...so um..just too much.thank you so much !!
Great Video Gary, I can't wait to try this out. Though I noticed that since you used a diamond chisel, the slanted holes in the back panel and gusset will face different ways. Wouldn't this lead to issues for the stiching?
Thanks for the awesome vid. i Loved how you chose to stitch the front panel that way around. Just so you know, your satchel video inspired me to start and helped me make my first bag. As a fellow HKG'er I immediately recognised the background sounds too ;) Thank you for your helpful channel!
Great video, beautiful work. My one question is where did you start marking the holes with your pricking iron? Did you start in the exact middle and use the first prong each direction from that mark? Thank you
You're absolutely right about the leather stitching. I bought a machine a little over a thousand. And I know sewing by hand is way better. But there's times I might use the machine.. but then I feel like it's not leather crafting. It's only bootlegging..😞
garyipip Thanks a lot for your response! I don’t have sewing machine for leather either,as am relatively new to leather craft and haven’t done much either, but maybe in the future I may purchase something like this: ruclips.net/video/zawvl5ZZIdI/видео.html You may find it interesting yourself, and might give this little creature a go...I was pretty intrigued by the simplicity but it seems they raised the price
Where can we get the templets for you designs. I want to start with leather making as hobby but not sure I would like it. Any plase I can get second hand tools first before buying the real stuff?
I know why I didn't see it. I was looking on how to install a gusset and I skipped forward to that part so I never saw the beginning. I see the pattern size now, thank you again, love the video!
