I just bought this laptop yesterday. It runs very well on every game I've played so far.... Great Performance and Portability. Also the speaker and the keyboard are nice too...

Gattullo Fabio Hi. The fan are loud if you running a Tiple “A” but! The speaker are loud as well my friend, you won’t notice a thing. Now you do have options. If you are using headphones which I recommend as it has a very good sound card which can enhance the sound experience, canceling the noise completely. also you can optimised your graphic setting en Nvidia control panel (G Force software) you can enable whisper mode which will reduce the video quality but as well the fan noise. Again it is a laptop which need to cool down on way or another.
Martina Schembri Hi. Battery life really depends on your purpose and yes I do understand the “portability” term. If your are gaming you can expect about 1.5 hours max 2 hours, if you editing a video or an images... approx 2 hours. If just viewing a Movie or RUclips 2.5 or 3 hours. Now I am lazy so I run basic eco mode. But I bet you can enhance that portability experience.
I'll also be getting this laptop on sunday/monday, does the screen have a yellow-ish/grey-ish tint? And are the speakers good? (Good bass, quality, etc, and an equalizer)
That's quite a huge difference, nice one! Not something I can test in my review units unfortunately, so thanks for sharing how much it changed things 👍
OK all done! Spent all of today re-padding and re-pasting. Bloody hell, forgot how much time it takes to cut out 20 different pads each of different size... But happily everything is working, installed and fully upgraded. So before I jump into my observations, here is what changed in terms of components from the stock laptop: a) 16gb CL17 2400mhz upgraded to 32gb CL15 2666mhz (damn this ram is a beast!!!) b) SATA3 M.2 to PCI NVME M.2 (from 500 read to 3500read, lol) c) Also, the internals were done with LM and a shit ton of new pads (took me about 4 hours to do this due to a shitty razorblade) d) Laptop is now on a cooling pad. e) Windows was re-installed from scratch with newest drivers (some problems were encountered as MSI drivers are outdated) f) BIOS was updated and EC was flashed So what are my observations. Total War Warhammer 1 instantly got a FPS bump ranging from 10 to 30 fps depending on the regions of the campaign map. Previously the CPU was thermal throttling now it no longer does so at any given point. What about the temps? The GPU runs 5 Celsius lower and the CPU 10 Celsius lower! With fans boosted to max (previously did not report that as there was no difference with temps with stock components) I saw a further reduction both on the CPU and GPU by about another 5 Celsius. So my temps went from 90 on the CPU to 75 (with cooler boost) and from 80 on the GPU to about 72. Remember fool, all while gaining another 15-30 fps! But you will probably get less of an improvement. The element of RAM which is much quicker now probably contributes a few frames to the outcome, also the game consumes 10gb RAM rather than 8gb like it did when it had only 16gb installed. This is the reason for some of this performance gain. Would have forgot to mention but I think the laptop runs a smidge quieter now than it did before (without cooler boost obviously) while playing. It also - as of typing this thread - is idling at a temperature low enough on the CPU (and GPU as I’m running a external monitor on it) without the fans needing to spin at all. Now that’s pretty dope! The cooling pad really makes a difference. I haven’t run XTU and will not be doing so as the temps for me are looking good enough that I don’t care about undervolting anymore. The problem with undervoling is that after a certain amount you are losing the boost performance of your 6 core CPU, which is what happened when I ran XTU last week (lost about 5-8 fps while seeing no real temp difference). So I’ve decided that for now, I’m fine with what I have and will let the CPU have all the juice it wants in the world!. More on udervolting 8750h just watch this: ruclips.net/video/yNt9L3BWOFo/видео.html Perhaps, now its time for an 1070 OC? The temps on the GPU are begging for it…
gucioolgierd If you were previously running single channel ram then the extra stick definitely helped your FPS results. Regardless I love that you went in-depth like you did. Thanks for talking the time to post your results 👍
Hey man thanks a lot for that in-depth report. I can't though figure out what do you mean by re-padding? since i want to follow your steps but couldn't catch on this one.
Even though it's TN this laptop has an insane panel in terms of speed, color range and sharpness of the matte layer - I've kept it just for the screen as others look dull in comparison.
If you have the time, it'd be awesome if you made a video showing how you undervolted you CPU and overclocked your GPU. I've seen a lot of different videos on RUclips but still not entirely sure how to do it properly and based on your other videos, you could probably make a very thorough how to video for both of these processes!
Those things have been on the todo list for ever, but I've never prioritized videos on those topics because there are already good examples out there. Bob of all trades does a more in depth undervolting video than I ever could: ruclips.net/video/yNt9L3BWOFo/видео.html As for the graphics, nothing special, same as all the guides on RUclips, I just boost the core clock speed until I get crashes with MSI Afterburner.
Great channel Jarrod! Watched almost all your gaming laptop videos. Tou covered nearly all of the laptops I considered buying. Except Hp Omen 15. Please review it :)
Thanks! I really want to review their stuff, I've been reaching out to them for months with different methods, unfortunately no luck so far as no one has gotten back to me regarding borrowing a review unit, I'll keep trying but for now I just have no way of getting a laptop from them.
KrolikPudding i just returned my unit, with an -0.150 undervolt and capping the cpu to 3.4 it still ran too hot at 92 degrees as the keyboard area is metal. while playing monster hunter world my gpu would drop down to 139mhz making the fps unplayable. I'm not sure if i should keep it or go for another laptop but it was $2200 cmin with a 1070max Q and 16gb of ram
There’s a lot of heat pipes, but the triangular heatsink design for the CPU is what makes the pressure not even, so the temps are higher than expected with all those heat pipes.
I found it a bit strange that it's the exact same cooling solution for the 7700HQ model (I have a comparison coming soon) despite the 8th gen chip basically being a volcano.
I own a MSI GE75 Raider-048 8sg notebook. I face issues with the a frame drops especially getting capped at 48fps on all games. I've tried the followings and still stuck at a capped 48fps. - Disable the battery boost in Nvidia Experience. - Select on any game on Nvidia Control Panel with ""High-performance NVIDIA processor"" - Enforce disabling V-Sync and Anti-Aliasing. - Disabling any recording tool. - Putting everything on maximum performance "SPORT" mode on msi dragon gaming center application. Your utmost support is critically needed to get above 60fps. I used to have 250fps on TRINE 4, but now it's stuck on 48fps.
I assume you are running on wall power and not battery. My guess would have been vsync or something, sometimes in games like overwatch you have resolution settings that tie in a frame cap so you could try change that, otherwise I don't really know what setting changed to suddenly force that, sounds like you've tried most things.
I just bought the GP63 Leopard 8RF and I love it. It came with an i7 8750H and 1070 ti. Only downside is it came with a 128GB Sata M.2 SSD. I hope to upgrade to a Samsung 970 Evo 1TB NVME soon.
The newer version of this laptop with a 2060GTX instead of the 1070 that we see here has been appearing in various shops for about two weeks now. I would be very interested to hear your take on it and a comparison with other laptops equipped with 1060s and 1070s.
I had this laptop for a few days and my temps were pretty bad too. Idles around 45-50s, and the CPU easily goes above 85 under moderate load, without undervolting.
Fantastic review mate. i love your work. This is so disappointing to see that even MSI raider series is suffering from the worst throttling. So after spending so much money, we get a PC which is already throttling. Extremely disappointed.
Cheers! Yeah I was a bit sad, though I guess not too surprising when it has the same cooling solution as the 7th gen model, I've got a video coming soon comparing those two 👍
Maximilian Severin I’m from Slovenia a country south from Austria ich lerne deutsch sprachen ich bin nicht gut at deutsch sprachen:( where did you get your laptop (what shop)
Very good and honest review..Would be nice if you could review the 17inch model ge73 8rf(same specs) and see if the same throttling happens despite the larger space..
Thanks! Will depend if MSI want to send me one 😛 I previously compared the 15 inch and 17 inch 7th gen GF models here if you're interested and don't think there was much difference if I recall correctly: ruclips.net/video/U6TefHRIgU0/видео.html
This might be a little too specific, but if you get the chance, it'd be interesting if you could get a GP63 and a GE63 (with as similar specs as you can) and do a side by side benchmarking. I'm curious if, when they have the same graphics (ie. GTX 1060) and same whatever else, if there is any difference in performance between the two!
Yeah could be interesting, I've been trying to get a GP laptop for months now though so I get the impression they just don't have review units available in Australia or something 🤔
Got the 17 inch version with a 1060. Still runs anything on 1080p / 60fps / very high to ultra settings. Using it for about 1 1/2 year now. No reason to upgrade yet.
Yeah a few people have mentioned hinge issues, unfortunately I can't really find long term things like that myself as the review units go back after a couple of weeks.
Am I the only one who thinks this 46 minute-30 FPS gaming and that 3 hour RUclips video watching battery lifetimes stink? This literally was a deal breaker to me ! Thanks Jarrod for this great review, I was really about to insta-buy this laptop.
Hmm most laptops in the test I use rarely last much longer than an hour anyway, plus you get worse performance on battery, of course it depends on the game you play though but I feel like actually gaming on battery regularly for extended periods is a pretty uncommon use case, could be wrong though!
@@JarrodsTech Oh I see, actually I am not too much into laptop gaming yet, it looks like my previously self-created expectations on on battery gaming are too high 😅😅 Thanks for pointing this out !
Seems like it would be best to just stick to the CPU undervolt to obtain max boost clock speeds, as I feel that would benefit the system the most as opposed to applying both the undervolt and the GPU overclock, especially if the heat pipes are shared between the GPU and CPU.
Yeah most likely, I suspect replacing the paste would go a long way too - someone else in the comments already said they improved temps by 20c doing that.
Hi Jarrod, I’m from South Africa and would like your opinion between getting this (2018) MSI GE63 Raider RGB 8RF (new here for R29,500) or the (2016) MSI GT72VR 6RE Dominator Pro (new here for R30,900)? I see they both have 16GB RAM, GTX 1070 8GB cards, 256GB SSD and 1TB HHD. The GE63 however has the 8th Gen i7-8750H while the GT72 has the older i7-6700HQ. I see the GT72 also has G-Sync and (important to me) it has a Blu Ray Player / Writer. Having the older generation i7 though, along with good RAM and the GTX 1070, would the GT72VR be better than the newer GE62 Raider? 🤔 *please advise* ... and thanks for the awesome videos!
Hmm the 6700HQ is still a decent CPU, I personally use it in my work laptop still and run multiple virtual machines no problem, it's still good for me 3 years later, but that's the thing it's starting to get old, and the 8750H is clocked higher and has two extra cores. If you're just gaming then the 6700HQ one is probably alright, but for other tasks I'd be seriously considering the 8th gen model.
Thanks! Yeah I should be, just waiting for MSI to have one available for me 😃 I used it briefly at PAX Australia in my recent video and asked them for one straight away 😛
Huh. I expected with all those pipes it’d be better cooled... not sure where’s the flaw but they don’t look great at all. (I’m comparing them with a razer blade 14 said to have one of the worst temps management) Great video as always J, hope to see more machines reviewed
with battery so close to the heatpipes, will this design cause the battery to degrade faster, or heating the battery to dangerous levels during heavy CPU/GPU loads?
Hmm I hadn't really considered it, I don't really have any way of knowing to be honest, so can only assume MSI has some idea about what they're doing there.
Hi Jarrod, 1. How is GE63 with RTX 2070 stack up against Helios 300 GTX 1660 ti? I am considering GE63. I do like the lighting features on GE63 more than Helios and GE65. 2. Is GE65 an upgrade over GE63 in terms of cooling or its just aesthetic difference only between the two. Thanks for your help!
I guess you can compare this video with my Helios 300 one and see the difference, probably best way to go about it, the 2070 will outperform the 1660 Ti by a fair bit though, depends if you need that GPU power. GE65 looks nicer better build quality from memory.
I haven't tested any other 8th gen ones if there are any, like the GE75? Hope to get that soon though. I've got a video coming soon comparing this to the older 7th gen model though.
@@JarrodsTech I mean the generation after the 20 series But I am looking forward to your reviews, Keep up the great work. Greetings from Suriname (South-America)
This one or the 17.3 inch version of this laptop? The ge73 what would you recommend??? And are bezels thinner on this or ge73?? Thank you you’ve earn my subscription bro
Where's the best place to buy one of these? I heard Best Buy sells laptops with not the exact same hardware? Idk if that's true. But any advice on best sites/stores to buy this laptop and also for an extended warranty would be greatly appreciated!
I don't really know about the US unfortunately as I'm in Australia, hopefully someone else can answer, I've heard good things from more boutique stores like HID evolution as they have extra services such as using better paste/liquid metal to keep it running well.
Actually picked up the ge73vr 7rf not to long ago and it looks like it's pulling better frame rates and such compared to the 8th gen equivalent (all other components are the same apart from the CPU which is a i7-7700HQ)which is ur review unit, think it's better off sticking to 7th gen for now until they can ace the cooling for the chip to prevent throttling
hey jarod do you think you could include the fact that whisper mode is in here and show the temps (surface +CPU/GPU) and fan noise ? i want to buy the Aero 15x so i wanted to know how the whisper mode works and if it does it's job without burning your hands also GREAT REVIEW AS ALWAYS !
Thanks! To be honest I've never tested with whisper mode, not sure how well that would go here too given the high temperatures, but I'll look into it for future laptops. I don't have this model here anymore so can't do further testing with it unfortunately
@@JarrodsTech cool 1060 version by the way with 16gb ram. I qas just trying to decide if i should get this or a desktop but if this will work its probably better?
What are you thoughts on driver 411... Nvidia is nerfing older cards right? I have seen videos and on forums people are claiming that 399 version is better than 411.
I don't think there's any difference, I haven't looked at it myself but Hardware Unboxed did a video on it here and I trust their testing: ruclips.net/video/lY7_ujxbdNY/видео.html
I haven't tested the GP63 yet so can't really tell you in specifics, but overall MSI seems to have a lot of laptops that are very similar to each other. Looking just at the spec sheets I can't really tell you any obvious differences. I want to test it out for myself and I've asked MSI for the GP63 a couple of times, just waiting for them to hopefully have a review unit available for me.
I'm not too sure, I suspect it may not make much difference though because I've previously compared the 15" and 17" MSI GF62 and found basically no differences in temperature, video here: ruclips.net/video/U6TefHRIgU0/видео.html
Wait... How did the contrast of this screen seems great? Did panelook wrong at giving us the specs sheet? How are your experience by using this screen compared to mainstream fhd 60hz ips display at budget gaming laptop?
Yeah the contrast was alright, bit above average, maybe they sell it with different panels if they got a different result? Or was it for the 7th gen? I can give you my panel model when I get home from CES, send me a reminder in a week and I'll grab it for you - can't access it here unfortunately as the file is back in Australia!
Basically lowering the voltage required to complete the same task, and less power equals less heat and higher clock speed/performance, depending on what the limitations are.
I have a question about it, now imagine you're playing for 3/4 hours without stop, then the GPU and CPU overheat ? do you have to turn on the cooler boost as well ?
Yes I have cooler boost on. I didn't see any change in temperatures after ~20 mins or so of playing, in any case though when I do my temperature testing each bar in the graph is tested for 30 mins, so to collect all of that data I had the laptop running under load for around 4 hours anyway so I'm pretty much showing worst case results.
Is there some crashes when he gets overheated ? Like fps down ? because i want to buy one and my old pc had some crashes when the CPU and GPU got overheat
Possibly a little, though I think the graphics make less of an overall difference compared to the 8750H, the 8750H is just really hot under multicore load.
@@JarrodsTech Damn. I was gonna ask if the previous generation GE63 7RF would do better because of the 7700 CPU, but I saw you already had a review for that one. 👍 Looks like the gap in computing power is just too wide and the temperatures were even worse! ☹️ I guess heat is unavoidable with this kind of hardware, I'm considering a cooling pad. Any laptops you would recommend around this performance level that have decent battery life?
I'm going to compare them on the future, I'd pick the ASUS one, better build quality, smaller, thin bezels, Less thermal throttling and performs a bit better if I recall, battery might be better in the MSI though
I'm thinking of getting the GE63 somewhere at the end of May. I'd like to check though, is it possible to replace the 2.5 HDD with a 2.5 SSD SATA on these laptops? And is there a particular brand I should look at that's compatible with MSIs?
Yeah, the 8750H is a good CPU for Premiere editing and exporting, I don't think there's that much difference to be gained from better graphics, just slightly faster export times if what you're doing can benefit from CUDA acceleration, otherwise for the editing process don't think it really matters.
bro te consulto a mi no me sale la gpu y tengo la msi gp63 leopard, pero me sale en administrador de dispositivos ocultos, pero hice de todo y no puedo hacer nada para poder utilizarla, sabes que podria hacer?
@@JarrodsTech great Vids man. Got a gp73 due to you reviewing the raiders quite good and the gp is similar with a lil less fancyness... just started it for the first time and installed all goodies, ready to check it out. Would still wonder how you´d review this one. Got the one with 1070gtx for 1,5k.
@Javon Johnson Hey mate. Played some pubg for the first time yesterday so I can't say that much. Like all notebooks it gets quite hot, but if you hit that cooler boost the temps are pretty on point so far. I wanna undervolt it today and play some cod when that ridiculous download has finished. Also I will do some editing, animation and rendering to see what's up. I'll keep you updated once I've gathered some more Intel.
@Javon Johnson Sooooo... i undervolted the CPU by 0,135v and it works quite well. Getting around 70℃ on GPU and CPU without the maxed out fans. So thats quite decent. No heat or power limit throtteling so far. Seems to be the same as the raider, except for the Keyboard lighting being three zone instead of per key and the silly rgb on the lid seems to be raider only too. Besides that the chassie seems to be identical just like the Hardware is.
After fixing my gfs girlfriend laptop I can say this laptop was kind of crap. Both hinges were destroyed, the thermal pads were complete melted, thermal paste was bad. The performance was decent, but the heat issue was just near unacceptable. The fact my girlfriend was getting severely thermal throttled without any warning is very disappointing. The laptop had been running like it was close to dead. Thankfully I was able to revive it, but still shocking how bad it was able to get.
i have an aorus X5 V8 and ive repasted the cpu and gpu and got 10c drop, ive unistalled the intel thermal framework and now it doesnt power trod... i can get 3,9ghz pushing prime 95 in small ffts and 3.4ghz running it with furmark and prime 95. New pads and new thermal paste, undervolt and overclock on the GPU, my pc is running faster than ever and the vram doesnt heat that much even pushing 80w into the cpu.
Nice vid Jarrod. My Gl504gm hero is maxing out at 72 degree in gpu and 60 to 64 degree in cpu in overboost mode plus there is only one fan in my room ...no AC.
@@JarrodsTech the new helios 300 (1660ti) comes at around $1600 in my area, he's selling his 8rf at $1200. Do you think the new helios is worth the extra $400 or the Rf8 would be enough spec wise? 😁 Just want to make an intelligent buy. Would really appreciate the insight!
Most of the 8750h laptops are power limit throttled for a few reasons I think. Using more power for multicore work may require a larger power brick. It may also result in more heat and require more cooling and weight, and may reduce battery life sooner, so they seem to be capped which prevents full performance, though they still already get quite hot with the power limit
I got this model with the rtx2080 and it runs awesome. But steelseries engine won't recongize my keyboard although the keyboard lights and commands work perfectly well.
Hello. Will you help me choose my laptop? I can not decide between MSI GP73 8RE-444CZ Leopard 17.3, 120hz, gtx 1060, 16GB ram, I7 8750H, OR ASUS ROG STRIX SCAR II GL504GM-ES155T Gunmetal 15,6 144hz, GTX 1060, 16GB ram, i7 8750H. Please. Thank you
I haven't used the GP laptop myself, but based on the 120Hz it seems like it's MSI's usual TN panel, personally I think I'd prefer the Scar with AHVA 144Hz screen. I'd expect similar performance with the same specs, but hard to say for sure without testing.
I don't know, I'd have to test both in the same workloads and measure temperatures/clock speeds, but I haven't had it for review so I haven't been able to do that.
Thank you so much jarrod. I asked earlier today for which one to in this or zephyrus M. You did say to opt for zephyrus and after watching this in depth review, i think I'm gonna go for the zephyrus. And zephyrus doesn't have any thermal throttling right?? Also Thank you very much for your detailed videos. Love your content man. Godspeed.
No problem, cheers! I'm going to make a comparison between this and the Zephyrus M in the future, it will be a while away though so don't wait for it before buying 😉 The Zephyrus didn't throttle for me, it was quite good for the specs considering the size.
@@JarrodsTech I don't why I didn't find your channel sooner. I love your detailed presentation so much and the fact that you cover every single query. From fingerprint smudge to thermals, undervolting, stress test, etc. People shouldn't watch other reviews apart from you. You're the best.
Go for the Zephyrus M. The only thing I can think off that the GE63 has over the Zephyrus is the smaller but still thick for 2018 bezels, and louder speakers. Otherwise, the Zephyrus is almost better at everything.
Can someone who owns this let me know more in depth if the entire chassis is full metal and rigid? I'm considering alienware 15 r4 as well . Heavy video editing performances as well if possible? Much appreciated.
It's metal but I wouldn't describe it as rigid, the base is also plastic, AW definitely has better build quality from my experience, and a higher price tag to match.
Hi, need your help, my friend received a faulty one of these and fixed the charging port and battery, however he wasn't able to fix the mouse pad, hes offering it me for £350, would you take it?
@@JarrodsTech I got this model and it have battery drain :(, notice this in next msi notebooks. They call it hybrid power and it sucks.... In HWmonitor battery current capactiy is getting lower and lower.
Any game? Did the games work ok before? Sounds like a software issue, I'd try reinstall the graphics drivers, maybe uninstall anything you recently installed that could be messing with graphics, try repair the game files if it's just a particular game, failing all that a clean Windows install.
Itz Frostyyxd - go into Nvidia control panel, into 3D settings for the app, and manually tell it to use the Nvidia GPU for each game. A lot of esports games default to the integrated graphics.
If thermal throttling was that great of an issue for gaming than the average framerates and the keyboard temperature would've been much worse than demonstrated in the review.
Wasn't saying it was a serious issue, just that it's interesting the results are clearly worse than most other laptops I've tested despite this having big heat pipes / coolerboost.
Fair enough, was actually talking about this at CES and how people panic too hard over thermals. There's a guy who commented today that caps all his games at 30 FPS just to go from 90c to 80c..
I think the TN screen here looks good, just look at it front on and it's no problem. Some of the lower end MSI laptops have poor contrast ratio though and just look washed out, if I recall the GE63 was better though.

Hey how's the battery life?
Martina Schembri Hi. Battery life really depends on your purpose and yes I do understand the “portability” term. b) SATA3 M.2 to PCI NVME M.2 (from 500 read to 3500read, lol)
c) Also, the internals were done with LM and a shit ton of new pads (took me about 4 hours to do this due to a shitty razorblade)
d) Laptop is now on a cooling pad.
e) Windows was re-installed from scratch with newest drivers (some problems were encountered as MSI drivers are outdated)
f) BIOS was updated and EC was flashed
So what are my observations.
More on udervolting 8750h just watch this: ruclips.net/video/yNt9L3BWOFo/видео.html
Perhaps, now its time for an 1070 OC? The temps on the GPU are begging for it…
gucioolgierd If you were previously running single channel ram then the extra stick definitely helped your FPS results.
Regardless I love that you went in-depth like you did. Thanks for talking the time to post your results 👍
Wow nice upgrades!
Yay you got around to making this review. This is the exact model I have and I love it. It kicks ass!
Yeah took a while to get it from MSI lol
got this custom ordered with 500gb + 1tb SSD. 16gb ram gtx 1070, can't wait
Sounds like a good combo! Let me know how it goes 😁
In which website did you order?
I like your honest reviews :)
Thanks! 👍
Thanks for the review! This will be my gaming notebook for boarding school. Very nice! :3
No problem at all, nice hope it works well for you!
Excellent video as always, very informative
Thanks!
Bob of all trades does a more in depth undervolting video than I ever could: ruclips.net/video/yNt9L3BWOFo/видео.html
As for the graphics, nothing special, same as all the guides on RUclips, I just boost the core clock speed until I get crashes with MSI Afterburner.
The negatives are price, pannel type and battery and nice video 👍
Thermals aren't great either, cheers!
- Select on any game on Nvidia Control Panel with ""High-performance NVIDIA processor""
- Enforce disabling V-Sync and Anti-Aliasing.
My guess would have been vsync or something, sometimes in games like overwatch you have resolution settings that tie in a frame cap so you could try change that, otherwise I don't really know what setting changed to suddenly force that, sounds like you've tried most things.
trust me all review are usefull, cuz i know what to expect before to buy, throttling temp and other stuf
Good to hear!
Vote for the Helios 500 comparison.
I'm working on it right now! 😁
Well it's not even close....
Thanks for the good information
No problem!
I just bought the GP63 Leopard 8RF and I love it. It came with an i7 8750H and 1070 ti. Only downside is it came with a 128GB Sata M.2 SSD. I hope to upgrade to a Samsung 970 Evo 1TB NVME soon.
Cool, yeah should be an easy upgrade.
The newer version of this laptop with a 2060GTX instead of the 1070 that we see here has been appearing in various shops for about two weeks now. I would be very interested to hear your take on it and a comparison with other laptops equipped with 1060s and 1070s.
MSI still have not got any RTX laptop review units for me to borrow, still waiting 😭
I had this laptop for a few days and my temps were pretty bad too. Idles around 45-50s, and the CPU easily goes above 85 under moderate load, without undervolting.
Yeah not the best 😰
What GPU did you have? A 1060 or 1070?
Great video again
Thanks!
Fantastic review mate. i love your work. This is so disappointing to see that even MSI raider series is suffering from the worst throttling.
So after spending so much money, we get a PC which is already throttling. Extremely disappointed.
Cheers! Yeah I was a bit sad, though I guess not too surprising when it has the same cooling solution as the 7th gen model, I've got a video coming soon comparing those two 👍
picked mine up für 1315€ here in Germany! Nice review, hope I've made a good choice :)
Thanks! Hope it's working well for you 😁

Id be thrilled to see a helios 500 comparison
It's on the todo list! I just need time to put it together, the comparisons take a lot of work, but I will get it done!
The camera on this one is better than most ove seen
Yeah not too bad I guess, the problem is basically all of them are just not great.
Thanks again for your help I went with the scar II 1070 same as this video
No problem! Hope it goes well for you 👍
Please help me
If i cant get the helios 300 ... what should i buy instead? I have 1400$ and i want something with at least 1660 and 16G ram
Lenovo Y540 would be my next choice.
Off topic but what specs should I be getting for a $1200 laptop?
I'd be looking at i7-8750H/GTX 1060, the Acer Helios 300 for instance
Are the leds on the back able to turn off while in use? I not a huge fan of it
From what I recall you can disable them, either way they're on the back so its not like you'll be looking at them while using it.
Bought this one in July 2018, after 5 month carefully use, now its hinge already crack and under repair. Serious problem with hjnge quality
@@jordupf No problem!
Will you recommend getting the rtx 2060 or gtx1070 model? Because they are both selling at 1500 at the moment.
where would u buy it?
This video should help: ruclips.net/video/tgsyvCvO8fw/видео.html
Yee Chua I would say rtx2060 since it’s a bit more powerful. I think gtx 1070 max q is less powerful than 1660 ti
Nice review! im waiting for the MSI GE75 to come out will you also do a review on that one?
Thanks! Yeah I should be, just waiting for MSI to have one available for me 😃 I used it briefly at PAX Australia in my recent video and asked them for one straight away 😛
@@JarrodsTech haha nice cant wait to see it!
Huh. I expected with all those pipes it’d be better cooled... not sure where’s the flaw but they don’t look great at all.
(I’m comparing them with a razer blade 14 said to have one of the worst temps management)
Great video as always J, hope to see more machines reviewed
Thanks! Yeah I expected that too 🤔
with battery so close to the heatpipes, will this design cause the battery to degrade faster, or heating the battery to dangerous levels during heavy CPU/GPU loads?
Hmm I hadn't really considered it, I don't really have any way of knowing to be honest, so can only assume MSI has some idea about what they're doing there.
Oh boy, can't wait for that zephyrus s on Black Friday
Nice! Let me know how it goes 😀 I'm still waiting for a review unit
Hi Jarrod,
How does it work compared to the rest of previous Raider series?
I haven't tested any other 8th gen ones if there are any, like the GE75? Hope to get that soon though. I've got a video coming soon comparing this to the older 7th gen model though.
Think I'll wait for laptops with next-gen graphics
Fair enough! Hopefully just a few months away.
@@JarrodsTech I mean the generation after the 20 series
But I am looking forward to your reviews, Keep up the great work.
Greetings from Suriname (South-America)
This one or the 17.3 inch version of this laptop? The ge73 what would you recommend??? And are bezels thinner on this or ge73?? Thank you you’ve earn my subscription bro
Maybe just me but I could careless about RGB
The older 7th Gen model has less RGB 😛 runs cooler too, I've got a comparison video between the two coming soon
Couldn't*
Where's the best place to buy one of these? I heard Best Buy sells laptops with not the exact same hardware? Idk if that's true. But any advice on best sites/stores to buy this laptop and also for an extended warranty would be greatly appreciated!
I don't really know about the US unfortunately as I'm in Australia, hopefully someone else can answer, I've heard good things from more boutique stores like HID evolution as they have extra services such as using better paste/liquid metal to keep it running well.
@@JarrodsTech awesome thank you for the quick reply! I need to look into HID evolution then. Thanks again
No problem!
U deserv more view bro
Thanks!
I've actually got a video comparing the GE63 7RF with the 8RF coming really soon 👍
hey jarod do you think you could include the fact that whisper mode is in here and show the temps (surface +CPU/GPU) and fan noise ? i want to buy the Aero 15x so i wanted to know how the whisper mode works and if it does it's job without burning your hands also GREAT REVIEW AS ALWAYS !
Thanks! To be honest I've never tested with whisper mode, not sure how well that would go here too given the high temperatures, but I'll look into it for future laptops. I don't have this model here anymore so can't do further testing with it unfortunately
@@JarrodsTech oh ok then but thanks a lot and could you try it out on your aero 15x ?
I would buy one of these if it used last years display.
I wish they'd use the 144Hz IPS panel instead.
Could you stream and play on high settings at the same time or is it better to get a desktop?? The 1069 version that is.
I expect so.
@@JarrodsTech cool 1060 version by the way with 16gb ram. I qas just trying to decide if i should get this or a desktop but if this will work its probably better?
Hey, I just want to ask, is G-Sync really necessary for gaming laptop like this one? Or without it, it will be a downside?
Not really, I think it's better for 60Hz monitors, with higher refresh rate and higher FPS I think that tearing is less noticeable.
What's the difference between this and gp63 leopard gtx1060?
I haven't tested the GP63 yet so can't really tell you in specifics, but overall MSI seems to have a lot of laptops that are very similar to each other. Looking just at the spec sheets I can't really tell you any obvious differences. I want to test it out for myself and I've asked MSI for the GP63 a couple of times, just waiting for them to hopefully have a review unit available for me.
DO YOU THINK IF THIS SAME LAPTOP WITH RTX 206O IS WORTH IT ? THEIR WILL BE NO THERMAL ISSUES ?
I cannot say as I have not tested it, though most of the heat seems to come from the CPU so it's hard to say what the difference would be.
Jarrod, do you think this thermal throttle issue can be avoided in the 17" model?
@@JarrodsTech
That could be a possibility...
Well, please send your panel name for this configuration once you're back already.
And thanks.
Can anyone tell me what undervaulted means as I am unsure what it us
Basically lowering the voltage required to complete the same task, and less power equals less heat and higher clock speed/performance, depending on what the limitations are.
@@JarrodsTech Thank You 😁
I have a question about it, now imagine you're playing for 3/4 hours without stop, then the GPU and CPU overheat ? do you have to turn on the cooler boost as well ?
Yes I have cooler boost on. I didn't see any change in temperatures after ~20 mins or so of playing, in any case though when I do my temperature testing each bar in the graph is tested for 30 mins, so to collect all of that data I had the laptop running under load for around 4 hours anyway so I'm pretty much showing worst case results.
Okay thanks, so basically can we play for a few hours without burning all ? xD
Is there some crashes when he gets overheated ? Like fps down ? because i want to buy one
and my old pc had some crashes when the CPU and GPU got overheat
Hey Jarrod, do you think the temperature and battery life will have significant improvement with the less demanding GTX 1060 GPU?
Possibly a little, though I think the graphics make less of an overall difference compared to the 8750H, the 8750H is just really hot under multicore load.
@@JarrodsTech Damn. I was gonna ask if the previous generation GE63 7RF would do better because of the 7700 CPU, but I saw you already had a review for that one. 👍
Looks like the gap in computing power is just too wide and the temperatures were even worse! ☹️
I guess heat is unavoidable with this kind of hardware, I'm considering a cooling pad. Any laptops you would recommend around this performance level that have decent battery life?
Which one is better in your opinion? Asus GL504GS or MSI GE63? I can't decide.
I'm going to compare them on the future, I'd pick the ASUS one, better build quality, smaller, thin bezels, Less thermal throttling and performs a bit better if I recall, battery might be better in the MSI though
@@JarrodsTech thank you very much. Subbed. Good work mate.
I'm thinking of getting the GE63 somewhere at the end of May. I'd like to check though, is it possible to replace the 2.5 HDD with a 2.5 SSD SATA on these laptops? And is there a particular brand I should look at that's compatible with MSIs?
Yeah that's fine, any standard SATA 2.5" SSD should be fine as long as it's got the usual connectors so brand should not matter.
@@JarrodsTech Ah cool, so it is possible. Thanks for the tip, man.
No problem!
How do you get it to 120 fps
I want to buy this laptop, but this with 1060 6gb and 16gb ram. Will be ok for adobe premiere ?
Yeah, the 8750H is a good CPU for Premiere editing and exporting, I don't think there's that much difference to be gained from better graphics, just slightly faster export times if what you're doing can benefit from CUDA acceleration, otherwise for the editing process don't think it really matters.
Jarrod'sTech thanks ! And one more. If i Will get this laptop and after 1-2year I want to upgrate graphic card for 1080 its possible ?
Should i buy it for graphics design & 3D work?
Should work fine in terms of specs, but probably better options in terms of heat output.
i like the mechanical keyboard on the gt75 and the gt83 more then on the other laptops

@Javon Johnson Hey mate. Played some pubg for the first time yesterday so I can't say that much.

Maybe Helios 300, 8750h/1060 for ~$1200.
Jarrod'sTech thanks! I’ll check into it!

How much fps does it sopport?
i have an aorus X5 V8 and ive repasted the cpu and gpu and got 10c drop, ive unistalled the intel thermal framework and now it doesnt power trod... i can get 3,9ghz pushing prime 95 in small ffts and 3.4ghz running it with furmark and prime 95. New pads and new thermal paste, undervolt and overclock on the GPU, my pc is running faster than ever and the vram doesnt heat that much even pushing 80w into the cpu.
Nice one! I've got the X7 here at the moment, may do a comparison with the X5 too 😎
Nice vid Jarrod.
My Gl504gm hero is maxing out at 72 degree in gpu and 60 to 64 degree in cpu in overboost mode plus there is only one fan in my room ...no AC.
Sounds pretty good! I had the GL504GS Scar recently and it was pretty toasty!
@@JarrodsTech I play only in High setting and tweak some other settings ....never max out any setting. Maybe that's why I am getting good temps.

I don't have one, most recent ones I've used have it, including this, GE75 and GS75.

A lot of CPU throttling in laptops..Is it the cooling problem or the CPU itself
Most of the 8750h laptops are power limit throttled for a few reasons I think. Using more power for multicore work may require a larger power brick. It may also result in more heat and require more cooling and weight, and may reduce battery life sooner, so they seem to be capped which prevents full performance, though they still already get quite hot with the power limit
I got this model with the rtx2080 and it runs awesome. But steelseries engine won't recongize my keyboard although the keyboard lights and commands work perfectly well.
Does undervolting make the battery last longer?
A little, but not much so I don't bother testing it in every review. I included the results in my aorus X5 review if you're interested

I haven't used the GP laptop myself, but based on the 120Hz it seems like it's MSI's usual TN panel, personally I think I'd prefer the Scar with AHVA 144Hz screen. I'd expect similar performance with the same specs, but hard to say for sure without testing.
Jarrod'sTech Yes. I understand, thank you. And in terms of cooling? Whitch is better? In Games ?
I don't know, I'd have to test both in the same workloads and measure temperatures/clock speeds, but I haven't had it for review so I haven't been able to do that.
Jarrod'sTech yep thank you for your answer.
How is the battery?

And zephyrus doesn't have any thermal throttling right?? Also Thank you very much for your detailed videos. Love your content man. Godspeed.
No problem, cheers! I'm going to make a comparison between this and the Zephyrus M in the future, it will be a while away though so don't wait for it before buying 😉 The Zephyrus didn't throttle for me, it was quite good for the specs considering the size.

@@nishikant7859 Cheers!
Go for the Zephyrus M. The only thing I can think off that the GE63 has over the Zephyrus is the smaller but still thick for 2018 bezels, and louder speakers. Otherwise, the Zephyrus is almost better at everything.
@@hidan9402 i bought the zephyrus and I'm extremely satisfied with it. Also the gs63 has insane temps and throttling issues.
Is it worth, if I buy it now at 💲1100
Hey Jarrod, Can we show this video on our MSI GE63 page at Kong? Kris
No problem at all Kris!
Great video! Any news on msi gl63 8RE-629?
I requested it a while ago but was told they didn't have it available at the moment, still waiting to get a GP63/GL63/GF63.
Is it good for content creation? Like photoshop and premire pro work.
Yeah should be decent the screen is quite good and better than many other laptops with similar specs (eg Acer Helios 500 / ASUS Scar 2).
Hi, need your help, my friend received a faulty one of these and fixed the charging port and battery, however he wasn't able to fix the mouse pad, hes offering it me for £350, would you take it?
Depends if you're willing to deal with those issues and be prepared for the fixes to fail, that is pretty cheap for these specs though.
Did you notice a battery drain during the game?
No, when that does happen I cover it in the review in the battery discussion.
@@JarrodsTech I got this model and it have battery drain :(, notice this in next msi notebooks. They call it hybrid power and it sucks....
In HWmonitor battery current capactiy is getting lower and lower.
I need help. I brought this laptop like three days ago and now whenever I try to launch a game it just crashes. Any reason why?
Any game? Did the games work ok before? Sounds like a software issue, I'd try reinstall the graphics drivers, maybe uninstall anything you recently installed that could be messing with graphics, try repair the game files if it's just a particular game, failing all that a clean Windows install.
My steam games work fine but it’s other game like fortnite and such that just crash. I’ll try do all I can
Itz Frostyyxd - go into Nvidia control panel, into 3D settings for the app, and manually tell it to use the Nvidia GPU for each game.
@@JarrodsTech I know but some in the comments section think it is.
Fair enough, was actually talking about this at CES and how people panic too hard over thermals. There's a guy who commented today that caps all his games at 30 FPS just to go from 90c to 80c..
This computer is there with the same components but with à screen 17"3 ?
Yes, the MSI GE73 8RF is the 17" version.
@@JarrodsTech Oh ! Thanks ! 👌
No problem!
Worth getting even with the tn screen?
I think the TN screen here looks good, just look at it front on and it's no problem. Some of the lower end MSI laptops have poor contrast ratio though and just look washed out, if I recall the GE63 was better though.
Jarrod'sTech gotcha. Need your opinion - this or the gs65 8RF?
MSI laptops often have good screens but they use one on a lot of their budget options that’s 60hz IPS and only covers 45% ntsc gamut. It’s not good
Most of the ones I've had have TN panels with bad contrast so they just look washed out, this wasn't one of them though it was a bit better
Tumbs up for comparison.
