Thank you. Very complete and I picked up a few new test procedures! Just upgraded to the 15t crawlmaster as the 12t was out of stock. Especially with the hw1080, the Holmes Crawlmaster was a very satisfying performance upgrade after tires. The vibration and operating heat of the Surpass is an absolute deal killer for me. Plus John makes humorous videos.....easy to support that😎
Your step and trim tests are the most valuable, I have a surpass 540 motor and it’s surprising how good the low speed torque and control is. The drag brake is weak, that’s the only negative about it imo, the efficiency is negligible since crawlers last so long anyways.
I've been using the Surpass Hobby version in my TRX-4 on 4S for a while now. My truck is really heavy and the drag brake is pretty poor, but with the 2 speed and mega low gearing it's a good value set up.
Thanks for that and the long version. I don't know however why am i watching if surpass is most cash i'm prepared to spend. There is some competition in Poland but with oem offerings, very rarely you get any data, and i like to know what am i getting, instead of reading some marketing story and no factsheet ... if that
I couldn't have done better in designing and conducting these tests - excellent! I am trying to reconcile the results you got in the Propeller-RPM-Ampere at 10:12 and Incline Start Test at 19:13 as it seems contradictory? Or perhaps the better corresponding test would be the Incline Start test and the Kg Amps test at 11:00 but starting at the minimum weights. I suppose the Kg Amps test is more akin to start up and sustained torque. Anyway the smoothness and temperature results you show is what lead me to choosing the Holmes Hobbies motor although I got the 8T.
Thank you. I am not sure if I understood correctly. But for me this is not necessarily contradictionary. Amp draw (RPM/A Test) and start-Voltage (trim steps) do not necessarily have to correspondend IMO. High voltage - low Amp and low voltage - higher Amp draw are more corresponding in my opinion (I know this from my helis, where I flew the same models with 4s and 6s - 6s can use a ESC with lower Amp-rating, I even used XT30 in my 6s Oxy 3 and would never have dared in my 4s Oxy 3, where I used XT60). This is what I think, but I am no professional at all, could be wrong.
@@donaldsneffe As a "professional" tester by trade, I would certainly agree with your methodology and execution. Regarding what I think may be a contradiction, I was thinking minimal amount of trim allows minimal current to flow. By your Kg Amps test, I was thinking that the HH motor would've started sooner then the Surpass motor. Again just casual observations on my part as these 5 slot brushed systems adds to the fun and performance!
@@lesdmess845 Not more current, higher voltage. As much current as needed will "flow" (only limited by Lipo/ESC specifications and wire diameter). You cannot "adjust" Amper by radio, you only can adjust voltage.
I really enjoy your methodical way of testing. One small quibble: doesn't the trim test with the weighted chassis just show that the Surpass Hobby motor has a more abrupt start? For controllability in slow crawling, I would be looking for a soft, progressive start, which seems to favour the Holmes.
Of course the Holmes sould be your choice, if you can get it (but do not buy them on Aliexpress, ALL (!!!) are fakes!!!). I am not sure, how to answer your question, because I do not know the correct answer. Actually I am doing an ESC test and use the Holmes 5-slot 550. Comparing the Hobbywing 1080, the Carisma ARC-2 and this new "China 1080" with program card. In this test video (testing several settings of each ESC) I also do this "trim-start-test". But if the motor/ESC/truck starts earlier, this would also mean you do have more way (of the throttle trigger) to modulate the whole range of speed, from 0 - 100. Honestly not sure how to rate this... Watch out for the video, should hopefully be up this weekend. Already working for nearly 2 months on this video, on/off, ... all those "comparative videos" and test-videos are far more work than simple unboxing videos, but the unboxing videos get far more clicks ;) Do also have 6 5-slot 540 motors here (Holmes, Surpass, Surpass Plus), for more than half of a year now. Intended to do a similar video as this one here with those motors, but it is soooo much work... could probably make more than 10 "simple" videos in the same time...
I don’t think so, it shows it just has more torque at slow speed, meaning it will be more controllable and won’t require a bunch of throttle then jump forward as soon as it clears an obstacle like cheap rcs do. It’s a great test to show the low speed control, the less throttle required to start making it move, assuming it’s the same speed motor, the more controllable it will be on obstacles.
Hi Donald, Absolutely brilliant video, learnt so much from your great presentation ? Just purchased an Axial CAPRA, great RC and done many upgrades all over. As you have suggested to recommended the Surpass 550 Crawler 5Slot 12T does sound amazing but I would like more SPEED !! So would you agree as another suggestion, a Surpass 550 Crawler 5Slot but 20T wold give me 70% speed and 30% torque ? Your expertise would be appreciated, thank you and enjoy your great holidays? Len
Thank you! Higher T = slower, not faster (but higher kv is faster, not slower ;-) ). You should try a larger pinion gear on the/your motor. Or use a lower T motor, not sure if 5-slot (very smooth at lowest speed) is so important if you want a faster Capra, 3-slot would probably be ok, too. Merry Christmas!
Hi Donald, finally which motor do you advice with the more torque as possible with 2s ? It looks that the Crawlmaster 550/12T is the best.. Did you test the Surpass 550/16T/5 slots ? I don't know which one to choose... My first criteria is the torque which consumes minimum amps ! What do you think about Crawlmaster 550/15T/5slots with less kv ? Do you think there is less torque ? I can't find specs for these motors, what you done is very helpful ! 👍
Hi, no I did not test it, do not have it. Do also have a ton of those 540 here to test, Surpass and Holmes, but since those videos are extremely much work to to, take forever, and do not get as many clicks as many simple review videos, I probably wont do a video about those. If you have access to Holmes motors, I recommend to buy a Holmes (but NOT on Aliexpress, ALL Holmes motors on Ali are FAKE!!!). Otherwise buy the motor with highest t you can get. If smooth start behaviour is not important for you, you maybe should consider to buy a 3-slot 550. Drag Brake is also stronger in 3-slot than in 5-slot.

hi im dont understand those motors.can you recomend brush motor 550 for fast driving not slow crawlers.1:10 monstertruck.
The lower t, the faster. If you want fast, buy lower t/lover kv and 3-slot, not 5-slot
