    This video is a wonderful example of a boat's restoration where the owner isn't begging for money or free of charge parts. I remember one video where they actually posted a list of things that would 'make life better'. Well done. I cant wait to see the next video.

      Thanks, Paul. I am doing my best. The videos are, as you surely can se, very amateurish. But I enjoy making them and do hope they also serve as entertainment and maybe a degree of educational. (do not buy old project boats based purely on dreams :-). Being an middle-aged man it is also educational for me as well, making videos. I hope to improve as time goes. :-)

    With that Butyl sealed hatch.....mask up leaving about 1" around the the perimeter un taped.....scuff with fine grit....then paint that 1" and that will hide the Butyl under neath.....goodonya 4 using Butyl,better than silicone ,never goes hard,best sealant ever......Gavin

      Thanks for your advice, Gavin. Like you, I also find Butyl to be great to seal windows, hatches etc. It is a bit hard taping the round portholes, but I will consider your advice in the future. :-)

      Hi Robert! Yes, the present windows are great, but not watertight. These need special rubber-sealings, which might be hard to get. The circular portholes are easy to get, and easy to seal and reseal with spare parts. I sure hope they suite the boat, but only time will tell. I will keep the old windows, just in case. Thanks for your input :-)

      Thank you, Clive! I was indeed fighting against the clock, both for the weather and the yards kind slot-time. Yes I was VERY unhappy and first decided to fix it next summer. But then there opened up a weather-window with still quite mild temperatures, and the yard agreed to let me stay for that extended period (the yard was actually VERY flexible and friendly all the way). So then I figured I would be MUCH more happy if I could get a new coat before winter, rather then wait till late spring. That weather window was really the last possibility this year, so a bit of fortune too...! :-)

    Congratulations - you achieved an amazing amount in 89 days and to such a high standard, particularly as the conditions turned against you with the usual excellent timing. What was the story with the yard in terms of pressuring you to get out of the space - had they contracted with someone else for the space? Oh well, I have caught up already - so what’s next? Continuing in the weatherproofness goal (windows and the like)?

    • @hsobstad
      @hsobstad  Год назад +1

      Thanks, Norman. The yard needed the space for winter-storage of boats. Next is rebuilding the engine foundation (is this the correct term?), as it is now just a few 2by4 pieces of wood, not able to withstand the engine vibrations. And yes, the windows will need re-sealing and partly changing. The boat needs to be dry on the inside. Then there is the teak-railing.... ;-)

    Hei, flott prosjekt, god jobb. Jeg er i gang med mye av det samme med en Fisher 30 fra tidlig 1970-tall. Den gamle gelcoten var flasset og skallet av noen steder. Akkurat ferdig med å slipe skutesida med eksentrrsliper. Spørsmål: Hvordan påføre dere ny gelcoat (og topcoat)? Rulle, pensel eller spray? Hvor mange lag? Pusse med våt sandpapir mellom hver omgang? Så polere til slutt? Det vrimler av ulike svar rundt om på nettet …

    • @hsobstad
      @hsobstad  Год назад

      Hei Arne. Takk for det. Er det du som kjøpte den røde som var til salgs på Lillestrøm i fjor høst?
      Først: Er du sikker på at det er gelcoat-en som skaller av? På min båt var gelcoat-en gjennomfarget blå og var egentlig i god stand. Ingen avskalling. Men båten var blitt malt på et tidspunkt, for en del år tilbake, trolig på grunn av matt gelcoat. Lakken var i dårlig stand da jeg kjøpte båten i forfjor og var matt og gått delvis i oppløsning (støv).
      Jeg har ikke lakket med gelcoat da det ikke er mulig. Man kan male med topcoat (gelcoat blandet med voks), men resultatet kan bli lite tilfredsstillende. I stedet brukte jeg polyurethan-lakk. Den er 2-komponent og ved riktig underlagsbehandling er den sterkere enn gelcoaten. Men den er veldig tynn og er derfor utsatt for gjennomslitasje hvis tau ligger og sliter på lakken over lengre tid.
      Min erfaring gjennom mange år, med polyurethan-lakk er veldig god. På video-en du har kommentert er polyurethan-lakken lagt på med rulle (gir jevn tykkelse) og så strøket over med en pensel av god kvalitet (fjernet rulle-preget og glatter ut). Du må tynne ca 10% med en tynner beregnet for polyurethan. 2 lag er vanligvis nok.
      Polyurethan-lakk kan overmales innenfor et intervall som er temperaturavhengig. Ved 15-20 grader så MÅ du overmale dagen etter, ikke senere. Venter du lenger vil lakken tørke for mye med det resultatet at 2. strøket gir dårlig heft. Du kan selvsagt vannslipe (for hånd helst) mellom første og andre lag (400 papir) men du sliter bort deler av tykkelsen på malingen. Man bør imidlertid slipe hvis man skal mer enn to strøk. Altså annet-hvert strøk bør få tørke ordentlig, for så å slipes/mattes forsiktig.
      Polering har jeg ikke gjort. Jeg veier tiden min mot resultatet. 90% er godt nok for meg. Du kan polere for å få enda bedre resultat, noe jeg aldri har gjort (har malt 6 båter gjennom årene).
      Du spurte også om rulle/pensel og spray. Jeg har aldri brukt spray. Gir nok flottere resultat med spray, men krever mye (bl.a. eget rom og tildekning). Jeg bruker rulle for påføring og pensel for utstryking. Stryker ut UMIDDELBART etter hver rullepåføring. Man har sekunder på seg før resultatet blir dårligere. Husk å stryke ovenfra og ned (loddrett). Kan virke litt ulogisk men det hindrer "heng".
      Håper dette bidrar 🙂

    Question: how did you remove and reseal the portlights (windows) either wheelhouse or salon cabin? How do they come apart?

    • @hsobstad
      @hsobstad  Год назад

      Hi Robert! Most of the windows are yet to be removed, which they will. They are all leaking. I have drilled out one of the portlights from the aft-cabin. Cant remember the size of the drill bit, but I did start small and increased until i reached the inner-diameter of the rivets. Maybe 2,5mm. I will probably replace all cabin-portlights with new. The wheelhouse windows I will keep (for now), but consider using bolts instead of rivets when reattaching them. Not as pretty, but easier to tighten up to get them waterproof. For the resealing the 4 portlights in the bow i used butyl tape. Will use that on the rest of the windows as well, when I get there...

    • @RobertBrynjolfson
      @RobertBrynjolfson Год назад

      @@hsobstad Thanks for the speedy reply. The portlights I was viewing (wheelhouse) had 2 rivets where the aluminum frame joined. Are those the rivets you would drill out?

      @@RobertBrynjolfson Robert. It seems to me we have about the same progress. I have seen the rivets to split the frame, but has not yet done that. So I have no experience to share yet. I will do the split, I guess, to be able to re-seal the window. So I cant se any other way than to drill out the rivets.
