  • After we uploaded Dave's Virtual Insanity reaction video,
MrBillyboyroge suggested Dave give this song a listen since he was of the mind that Jamiroquai really excelled during their live performances.
So we took MrBillyboyroge's suggestion and here is the result!

Jamiroquai weren't more popular in the US because they didn't fit into any of the boxes the music industry requires acts to stay in so they can be marketed and promoted to their target audience. They weren't R&B or hip-hop enough for black radio. They were too rhythmic/funky/dancey for mainstream rock radio. They weren't white, nerdy or avant-garde enough for alternative rock radio. They weren't boring enough for the Adult Contemporary market. And Sony (US) wasn't about to let this hippy, funk/soul/disco-positive band (they most certainly were not going to let disco happen again) come over and become a thing. The videos from their first 2 albums were only played on MTV2 (never the main MTV) and BET (but just during their more eclectic morning and early afternoon hours when most of the country wasn't watching). MTV actually banned their first video "When You Gonna Learn?", claiming it was too violent. When the video for "Virtual Insanity" (from album #3) took everyone by storm (rising to the top of BET, VH1 and MTV's weekly video countdown shows and winning four MTV VMA trophies including Breakthrough Video and Video of the Year) and most radio formats put the song in heavy rotation, Sony (US) cockblocked its chart success by never releasing a physical single. These were the days before streaming; people had to go to a store and buy a record, tape, or CD. So the song only charted based on airplay and never went any higher than #39 on Billboard's Hot 100 and no higher than #34 on the Alternative, Dance Club, and Adult Pop charts. None of their subsequent singles got any kind of real push. So Jamiroquai, on paper, are not even a One Hit Wonder in America. Inspite of not officially having a US chart hit, "Virtual Insanity" eventually won the Grammy for Best Pop Performance by Duo or Group with Vocal. The band however did not attend the award ceremony. The announcer said they couldn't be there because they were working on music for the upcoming Matthew Broderick 'Godzilla' film.

Jay Kay is indeed a speed freak, he is a big Formula One fan, and big Ferrari fan, owns and collect lots of cars. They once played in a car launch for McLaren F1 Team.

Toby Smith and Jay Kay wrote 99% of the songs from 92-2001. Wallis Buchanan and Stuart Zender contributed once in a while.

All live versions of this song are great, but the one I like more is the one of the Tokyo Dome with Nick Fyffe

Love that you were able to figure out the keyboard player, Matt Johnson, was the songwriter, just by the chord changes. 😅
