Attention everyone!! Do not follow his instructions, he does not know what he is doing!! If you turn the allen key too much, you WILL screw up your steering box! It WILL jam!! It WILL cause an accident if it happens while on the road! The correct way to do this: raise up your cars front end, put it on stands. Loosen steering box nut, while holding the allen key, not letting it move along. Then turn allen key 1/8 of a turn MAX. Then tighten the nut and hold allen key so it wouldnt move. Test steering. Turn engine on. Turn steering wheel all the way to one side, if you can turn it back, using just one finger, you all good. If you cant do it, it means the steering is too tight, you need to loosen the allen key a little bit. Then you test steering wheel again. Just do not over do it. The box will jam.
Thank you I was having that same problem in my 1995 jeep grand cherokee and that fixed it I was trying to figure out what's making my steering feel loose until i came across your video your a life saver 👍👍👍
Ok, you needed to start by lining up your steering wheel Straight and replace your tie rods. Then go get a wheel alignment. Then adjust your steering box! I just did this yesterday! I only turned it 1/8. All you need. Completely Straight no play! Also replaced track bar!👍
I just bought a 96 grand cherokee limited. Thought it just needed an alignment. Truck sways back and forth in the lane you need 2 hands to keep it on the road. Got 4 new tires, alignment, stabilizer shock still doing it. Tightened the steering box made it worse. Last weekend I replaced the steering box, new sway bar links and bushings. Much better but still undrivable to the women in the house! LOL this weekend I'm doing the outer tie rods, pitman arm tie rod and track bar. I ordered a new steering shaft also I can't take much more of this rusted 26 year old vehicle! I bought it off my 80 year old neighbor who bought it new for $2500 I now have $3,500 in to it and it's still swaying. I hope this fixes it before I burn it to the ground haha
I've ended up replacing the entire front end shazam and omg so much better. Track bar was my biggest thing after the rack went out eventually. Now a couple years later I'm doing a rear end on this thing....
lol mine had this problem for over 10yrs. Never knew what it was but its so far out now I decided to research it. Never thought it would have been something so freakin simple!
I have a 92 4.0 and there is just a little play. I chickened out tightening the allen screw. I was going to do just a 1/4 turh clockwise to tighten it up just a smidgeon. After all ,I have 200k miles on the car. I heard that to tight wears out the worm gear teeth. I don't know if the greas in there is up to the optimum level. I never touched it. I will check and see if the locking nut is loose. I've had wheel wiggle for 10 mph starting at 55 mph. In a perfect world, I get lucky and the 1/4 turn helps. I may have lost a spin balance weight . Thank you for posting this.
No problem! And also about the gears wearing out, I'm more than sure you are correct. Mine has been starting to get loose again but of course I over tightened just because of how loose the steering was. Thank you for commenting!
That adjustment locknut is for maintaining an otherwise good steering box. Too tight and you will lose the steering return. Use it too much and you will loose the steering box by forcing overworn parts to take up too much slack, and they are a LOT more than 150 bucks - or you'll be doing it again real soon if you go with a used or cheap re-man. There are no more New steering boxes anymore. Theyr'all re-mans, but thay vary in quality and it is a crap shoot. Turn teh adjustment screw no more than 1/8 turn at a time. When you feel the steering not wanting to return to straight after taking a corner, back off some. That's as good as you can get from that feature. If it's not good enough, the box is worn too far and you are beating a dead horse.
Oddly enough it never binded up but the rack did spring a huge leak a few weeks later. I would agree 1/8 to 1/4 turn max at a time to be safe. To be fair the rack was already trashed before I did the adjustment.
My 97s track bar snapped going down the free way and learned that day that death wobble was a thing apparently but I’ve replaced pretty much the entire front suspension minus the tie rod ends because they’re nice and firm and I was looking into replacing the steering column because I’m still experiencing a slight wobble around 60 and it’s got loose steering just like yours in the video so I’m gonna give this a shot and see if it fixes anything
If it only took 5 minutes to do, it should not be a problem at all to just go ¼ or less then test drive until the right adjustment is achieved. Too tight and you will be spending the bucks and a heck of a lot of work to replace it not to mention starting at square 1 unless you're buying a new OEM box. 🤪
Yeah. You're definitely right. Rack went out after a couple months of driving. Was bad already. Just kinda said whatever lol. Didnt bind up at all on me so she must've been cooked
Very good video it explains the problem and how to solve the problem step-by-step !!, now that's legit . I have the same problem on my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee sloppy and wandering steering wheel especially the faster you go the more it wonders !!, I Appreciate the video . NO ?
the suspension wasn't designed big tires and engine bay was designed for a little straight 4cyl engine.........If you want a big foot buy a big foot!!!!
Pretty much same setup on the suspension from when they first started. Being a front end mechanic, I hate dealing with gear box's and especially track bars. Either you got a death wobble from the track bars or worn gear box after a few years or maybe after you hit a big curb. Even if you lift a jeep 2 inches, you'll be all over the road unless you get an adjustable track bar to actually make the front suspension straight and not in a big bind.
Yeah it was. Steering did tighten up didnt notice any binding but I did have trouble with the rack a month after I did it. Started pouring power steering fluid. It did leak some before I did this but got worse over time. Ended up replacing the rack long run. Thanks for commenting!
you turned it way to much. before trying to drive it get the front tires off the ground and try to spin the steering wheel all the way, left to right. i'm not an expert by no means, its yours so do what you want to it. please update us on how this worked out for you.

Agree 100% you need to drop the link arm ball joint......... again dont do this 1/8 turn Max It will bugga the worm drive in the box
Yeah thats my understanding on how to do it which I've done in the past. I wonder if he has a follw up video.

Cheapest is balancing tires. Get a 4 wheel alignment and or new tires. Most places will only align the front wheels.
Also usually they won't perform an alignment if a vital steering or suspension component is worn out.

buddy you rock as ive been suffering with this on my 93 YJ
thank you
With that many turns, did you end up tearing up your gearbox? 1/8 turn at a time!

Thank you I just brought a 94 grand Cherokee with that problem
There's a bushing in the xj steering stem that wears out. Check it before adjusting steering box.
Thanks for the video this helps a lot I have the same problem 100%
Follow his advice and I guarantee you will be buying a new steering box.
It it to mine 3 years ago that has not happened in 3 years I'd say it's good

Change your power steering fluid to schaeffer all trans.
Can that itself cause death wobble?
My locknut has a left hand thread. Weird.

I definitely have that planned before it gets driven. Definitely don't want it to bind. Thanks for the recommendation!
The Jeep is currently on the road and ends up I dont have a binding issue at this time. Thanks for watching and for giving feedback!
