    Best video on the Cherokee oil change. Great lighting, good explanations, no BS. Great work man!

    One important note - get the Wix filter. It has an anti-drain valve design that keeps the oil in the engine for nice starts instead of nightmares one can have with Fram/crap filters. Just look up Wix filter Cherokee XJ, oil experts can wax upon this endlessly however it's known to be a great design, cheap, available widely, works with HDEO, and gives your 4.0L the right amount of oil pressure in cold and normal weather.
    Mine didn't give me any grief during cold capers in BC or the 13,000 ft Rockies in Colorado this year. Was passing everyone with ease at the Eisenhower pass the past several weeks daily, Rotella T6 and the Wix work perfectly at the cold high altitude passes.

    Not sure if you still do instructional videos, but I've always appreciated the way you present fact based/experience learned knowledge. I've learned a lot from you. Even if you decide to go a different route from the XJ, please keep sharing How To videos. A man with basic tools and a place to work can get a lot done with a bit of direction. You're a great instructor!

    It’s always a good idea to pour a little oil inside the filter as well to prime it

      Yeah but since it’s sideways it’s impossible without spilling oil

    My Dad taught me that when you run your engine, it throws off the oil level on the dipstick. He said that if you run your engine, you need to shut it off and then wait a couple minutes before you check the dipstick.
    If you check the dipstick too soon after shutting off the engine, the oil hasn't had a chance to make its way back to the pan, and you'll get a false read; there will be more oil in the engine than what the dipstick shows.
    ...
    ...
    An automatic transmission is the opposite. The *transmission* dipstick needs to be checked when the transmission is warmed up, and you only check the transmission dipstick when the engine is running.

    Thanks man great video! I got a question, last oil change on my XJ was done with 15w40 oil, instead of 10w 30. What do you suggest, should I just change the oil and put in 10w30 as it should be?, or is there any kind of flush or special procedure that should be done?

    • @HistoricHarpersFerry
      @HistoricHarpersFerry 5 лет назад +1

      15w40 is fine. Some people use it all the time in summer and higher milage engines

    Good video, I used the Wix 51085 oil filter on my 1988 Jeep cherokee Laredo 4.0 Liter inline six and the oil filter would not thread on. First time using Wix oil filter and never had an oil filter not thread on before.

    I changed my oil for the first time after watching this video and I am very grateful. It was easy. I used Mobil 1 High Mileage and the Mobil 1 (204) Extended Performance filter. I put in a little over 6 quarts and the fill level on dipstick is about a quarter inch over the safe line. Should I drain a bit?

      Glad to hear that the video was helpful! Yes, if the oil is overfilled, you should drain a little bit

    Admiral Off-Road I have a question for you about this Oil change. At the 3 minute mark you reach in to unscrew the oil filter. Directly behind your hand and above the oil filter is a black plastic piece that has a wire connected to it. It goes to the distributor. What is that black plastic piece called it got broke while removing a particularly stuck on Oil filter?

      ***** I've been in that situation before. I ended up having to use a hammer and punch an old screwdriver through the side of the oil filter and use it like a lever to get extra leverage to unscrew it

    Young man that is a very excellent job on the video. That particular straight six engine would love some Total Quartz9000 or Motul 8100 x-cess oil. These oils are for gasoline or Diesel engines. You can Google Jeepforum and check out using diesel oil in that engine. I use Mobil One in my 07 Jeep GC it's a six but not that straight six engine.

      ipathvvv from what I've read. Rotella diesel oil in the straight six is a very good oil to use Has the zinc in it that this engine wants.. Check out some jeep forums on this change the crush washer when you replace the drain plug. I don't know why most guys don't do that.

    Thanks, it's been years since I did an oil change myself and I'm just tired of dealing with mechanic's BS. I'm also leaking gear fluid from the back after having re-sealed the front, can you do a video for that?

      Oil change successful. And actually it is leaking gear fluid around the front differential.

    hi i just watched your vid, i got 91 jeep cherokee xj sport, i wonder whats the differnce of using synthetic and conventional, and what can u suggest to use better
    thanks.. :)

    • @AdmiralOffRoad
      @AdmiralOffRoad  7 лет назад

      Hello. This is a hotly debated topic. Here is my take: The Jeep 4.0 is not a high performance engine that might require a synthetic oil. The advantage to a synthetic oil would be longer periods between oil changes. The drawbacks are price and possible new leaks. There are some people who report leaks forming after switching from conventional oil to synthetic oil in older, high mileage engines. The thought is that there are some buildups in the engine that have plugged up some leaks and synthetic oils might have certain detergents that can brake up these buildups. Ordinarily this would be a good thing unless the buildups are stopping some leaks. Therefore, if the vehicle is currently using synthetic oil, you could continue to use it without worry and reap the benefits of longer oil change intervals or use conventional oil. If the vehicle is currently using conventional oil or you are not sure, conventional oil would be the safer bet. There may be some that would argue that one is better than the other, but plenty of 4.0s have gone well over 200k miles on both synthetic and conventional oil.

    Why the bigger filter ?

    • @AdmiralOffRoad
      @AdmiralOffRoad  6 лет назад +1

      it will have more filter material which means Its able to hold more contaminants and still allow oil to flow

  • @kristopherwilliams1719
    @kristopherwilliams1719 7 лет назад

    What is the purpose of going with a larger oil filter?

    • @AdmiralOffRoad
      @AdmiralOffRoad  7 лет назад +2

      a larger oil filter will have more filtering media surface area which should reduce the effects of the filter getting clogged when the oil is dirty.

    • @kristopherwilliams1719
      @kristopherwilliams1719 7 лет назад

      Noted. Thanks.

    why put a oversized oil filter? san mateo ca

    • @AdmiralOffRoad
      @AdmiralOffRoad  8 лет назад

      +ed420b It has more filter media and allows for almost an extra quart of oil.

    • @montrosepatriot
      @montrosepatriot 6 лет назад

      oversized filter interchanges with a Motorcraft FL1A or equivalent - same filter used with Ford V8s (Windsor, Cleveland, FE, 385 series exc. the Modular) and their ol skool six (Falcon and 240/300); pre-1973 Mopars also used the 1 quart filter eg Slant Six

      Edgar Herrera if you buy regular oil filter, buy 6 quarts, if you buy oversized oil filter to hold more contaminates buy 7 quarts.

  • @Starlesslemon
    @Starlesslemon 7 лет назад +2

    Get high milage synthetic. That's the only oil you should use for old cars. Never use regular oil on anything.

    • @arthursmith643
      @arthursmith643 6 лет назад +1

      Starlesslemon only use high mileage oil if you have a problem with the the engine using oil. . Once you use high mileage oil stick with it. High mileage oil swells the seals and if you go back to regular full synthetic or conventional you could have leaks because the seals will go back to the way they were before and that could cause leaks.

    • @montrosepatriot
      @montrosepatriot 6 лет назад

      with the use of hi mileage oils there is also increased ZDDP content - the additives do swell the seals and if reverting back 2 the conventional blend expect 2 swap out all of the seals eg timing cover, valve cover, timing seal, oil pan, and the RMS (on a Jeep 4.0L or an ol skool with a 2 piece rear main seal the oil pan must be dropped)
