Hello, Jeepers My 1994 Cherokee sport which I've owned for the last 14 years, since 175,000 miles. It now has 391,000 miles and is running strong. As a mechanic, I changed the timing chain kit and front seal, at one of the water pump changes was 275,000. I baby my jeep and plan to go past 500,000 miles. I have refurbed complete steering linkages. with the insane prices of new vehicles, I may keep it to 1,000,000 miles. I use Rotella oil always.
I did an add a leaf, billstein shocks, coils up front, sway bushings and links and rewelding wallowed lower track bar mount combined with an alignment (now that the vehical was properly sprung) nzd that got my 96 handling nice at 230k. I still see a lot of XJs banging around my town but just cause the drivetrain lasts a loooong time dont mean the steerage and suspension is immortal too.
I have two 94 XJ's, have had one for 21 years, it has 290k, the other has 370k miles. I've heard rotella is the best oil to use. I've always used whatever I can afford, but am very faithful in keeping low miles between changes. Good maintenance most important
STP High mile 10w 30, going 230,000 I have no doubt this stuff saved my 4.0 and boosted its life. When I first got it the valves sounded like a 7.3 and had small timing noise, after my first oil change with it a year ago sounds like it just stepped out of the factory, the only problem I have with it is that for high mile oil it only lasts about 5k.
I've got a '99 Classic and a '00 Sport. Both are over 200k and both get Rotella T4 10w30 + Mopar MO-090 filter every 3k miles. They are road tractors that run like sewing machines.
I just put The rotella 10w30 in mine last week. It’s the secondary/4wd vehicle but now that snow is coming it’s being driven more. Have you had any issues running it? So far the jeep loves it oil pressure has been solid and it honestly got a little quieter
When I bought my XJ the previous owner ran Penzoil 5-30 regular the 4.0 had alot of racket I changed it to Castrol GTX 10-30 high mileage been using Castrol GTX high mileage for 6 years since it had 168,000 now its at 248,000 running strong no racket or knocking
i’ve been running valvoline maxlife high mileage. I think it’s great but i truly believe the oil in our 4.0s doesn’t matter as long as you use a good oil filter and if you have low oil pressure always use a lucas
If someone wants to stick with the 10W30 weight from the manaul they Make a Rotella T4 10W30. Tractor Supply carries it for about 13ish dollars a Gallon. Any HD diesel oil should still retain higher levels of ZDDP. Wal Mart's Super Tech HD Diesel Oil (15w40) has a nice additive package as well. I run regular oil analysis and have tried different HD diesel oils and Rotella and Super Tech have so far had the highest levels of ZDDP. Mobil Delvac has had the lowest so far with Zinc levels of 889 PPM and Phosphorus levels of 659ppm. Supertech 1089 and 898. Rotella T (10w30 and 15w40 were about the same) 1109 and 930. I ran some Delo at some point but can't find an oil analysis in my records for it right now. Edit-these numbers are from oil analysis on used samples not new oil.
That's what I use is Tractor Supply all fleet diesel 30HD. It says on the 5 gallon bucket it's for 1993 and older engines, diesel and gasoline. I have a 1993 Cherokee and 340,000 miles on it. Still runs great. I use NAPA'S oil and air filters.
hello! I have an XJ 4.0 sport with 186 thousand km...what is the ideal oil model to use? At the moment I use 20w50 valvoline...I'm from RJ Brazil. Thank you in advance for the information
I was using the adaptive from stp at AutoZone about a year or so and, my catalytic converter just failed. The year and a half before, I was using GTX . I don't know what my buddy used but, he had her for years , so must be a coincidence. Otherwise people would notice the direct correlation after 2nd application. Thx Ronnie
I have a 2000 Cherokee XJ 4.0. Been using Mobil 1 synthetic 5w30 high mileage. Want to do the switch over to Rotella as it's more affordable and ZINC of course as I did a lot of research on it. Question would you only recommend T4 ? As I've seen others use T5 10w30 and T6. What is your take? Also what is your recommendation for oil filters I use MOPAR MO-090.
Rotella T-5 10w30 plus a oz of Lucus oil treatment in winter, Rotella T-5 10w40 in summer with 2-3 oz of Lucus oil treatment. I’ve never blown up a motor.
Penzoil platinum full synthetic 10w30 is what I’ve used the last 3 oil changes love it! Going to try the penzoil ultra and the full synthetic high mileage see if I can tell any difference. I should probably use high mileage since I’m at 208k and wix filter is your best bet 👍🏾 or since my Jeep came with a box of mopar filters I’m using those up for now
Any of the 15w40 diesel oils are good to use in the 4.0, I use the Traveler brand from TSC in mine and have had good results when I have had a Blackstone oil analysis done. I use that same oil in my 7.3 Powerstroke, 5.9 Magnum, Yamaha Rhino, lawn mowers and any other small engine with good results in all of them.
Know anything about the levels in the Motorcraft diesel oils? I run the 10-30 in my 2013 F350 and have been running it in the WJ also because of availability. 5qt of the Motorcraft and a bottle of Lucas for the 6th quart.
Hello, I am from Colombia, rotella is not available, we have rimula r4 shell, it is the same it serves me, thanks for your attention, greetings from Colombia
Hi Ronnie, just curious, if I were to get Rotella for my 99 xj should I look into getting a different type of oil filter for it or is it ok to use the standard mopar filters? My brother sold it to me and it had a pretty noticeable lifter tap. Now I don’t really make a whole lot of money so I haven’t been able to take it to a shop but I ended up getting a little scared because the check engine light came on and I should have gone to get the code checked but I was nervous to put more miles on it when it came on. Mind you this is my first car. So I got to thinking, my brother did say it needed an oil change, and because of my work schedule it’s been hard to find any time to get it to a shop to get the new filter and oil done properly so during my break I decided to change the oil myself. Well, I failed to look into the fact I needed a special wrench to get the filter out so I just changed the oil and not the filter. But when I went to start her up again the light wasn’t on anymore. So I’m hoping I didn’t end up knocking a sensor loose or anything else because I was trying to see if I could get the filter off by hand but the thing just didn’t move. Any ideas? It would mean a lot I want my xj to last a loooong time.
I'm sure you figured it out since this post but for anyone else who might be wondering the same: Since you're replacing the filter don't be afraid to damage the old one. Any pipe wrench or channel locks that can fit around it will do. If there isn't room, though, as is the case with the XJ and that stupid leaky 90* adapter, I have used a rubber tie-down strap many times. The cheap ones that you may often see on the side of the road with the s-hooks on the ends. Take out the hooks, wrap around the filter and fold over so it bites on itself. Voila, budget filter wrench. And don't forget to check for the old seal so you don't double-gasket the filter!
I've heard that oil with Zinc clogs Catalytic converters...any truth to that. I know cams are more costly, but these days cats can be pretty pricey as well.
Im not ashamed to say i've been running whatever's on sale for the last 8 years. ,Rotella,Penzoil,Castrol,Supertech. Project Farm Recently, did a video on STP and Lucas..both of which are just thickening agents,no nutritional value for the engine .Heres the one for STP. ruclips.net/video/mqiUFklL_XI/видео.html .... Skip to 10:50 for the analysis, the Supertech oil has MORE zinc in it,haha.
I use synthetic oil with zinc in it with a synthetic oil filter and it runs smoother than the oil plus zinc additive and regular filter but it's very expensive to buy but worth it imo
That's all I run in anything except my 2015 silverado, run it in my xj, my 06 yz450f that somehow hasn't blown a crank yet even thought gh it gets beat like you can't imagine every time it gets ridden, and rotella is somewhat cheap
Is it safe to run that Rotella oil 10w-40 on a 97 XJ, 5 speed manual transmission... I'm located in southern California... not sure if location matters
I’m worried to do this, as I’m in a colder climate. 268k 01 XJ. Anyone to convince or persuade me on what to use?? Purchased not too long ago looking to do the first change on it.
Rotella is good. But zinc levels are diminishing because diesels have cats and particulate filters. I always ran penzoil hi milage it has zink additives. That is dwindling because of gov mandates. Hi levels of zink will mess up o2 sensors and cats thats why car manufacturing introduced roller cams. The 4.0 stopped in early 2000's to the V6 with roller cam. Comp cams sell zink additive in pints add that to any oil and beware alot of oil is half synthetic.which is for late model tite clearance engines.
