I love that you are teaching about this. thank you.. one important thing, please note.. Baby birds need caterpillars, as they are soft, and most nutritious. So, we need to plant for butterflies and lovely moths, many are specific to certain plants. People can get a list of the Native Plants specific for their area. Doug Tallamy has made many RUclipss on the subject. Please see and enjoy. Thank you again.
I so totally agree. The best way to control garden pests is by increasing natural predators in your garden, be it birds or hedgehogs. And they are so lovely anyway....
Since I am now planning for the Spring this was very helpful. Before winter set in I planted two Service Berry Trees and a Crabapple to add to my habitat. And I have 6 feeders and a birdbath. I also collect birdhouses. Thank you for sharing this valuable information. Zone 5 Mid Michigan.
I'm so glad you mentioned to wait until spring to clean up. I wait until late spring because I know that beneficial insects like ladybugs are hibernating in my bark chips and leaves. I watched Orioles coming for long strands of grasses to weave into their nests. One thing I learned is that birds have a pecking order and so only so many birds will feed at the feeder while the others wait for their turn. Providing cover for them close to the feeder allows me to see those birds waiting in the wings for their turn.
YES! They are the best bug control ever. And they are so cute. Over the years we had so many feathered friends in our garden and never had a problem with bugs, aphids... Imagine the little robin, first year alone, second year two of them at the birdfeeder, one year later mom, dad and a little one! What a joy I had. Later I found their nest in the yew hedge. Thank you for this very informative and well arranged video. Your garden looks stunning! Best wishes, happy gardening and stay safe, Hanni.
Yes so agree! We have lots birds we provide it all for them!! My hubby was in the past Audubon pres here in northwest fl.. he keeps are bird feeders filled and the bird baths!! Love your videos and info!! Thanks from JUDY in Pensacola fl! ❤️🐝🦉🦜
I seen Monty Don last yr show how he turns his big potting table into a bird feeder, I did that and it was so much fun watching all the birds. some I'd never seen before. I'm adding a birdbath this yr.
@@NorthlawnFlowerFarmandGardens Yes it was, I seen it here on RUclips, so I'm not sure which yr it may actually have been, I binge watched it. Guess if you watch the episodes in the fall you could find it.
Everything you said is so true. Last year I started tending to the birds and I noticed a great reduction in slugs and beetles. Added bonus, the sight and sounds of these creatures. Happy New Year to you and your family.
I always learn something new in your videos! What a great idea salvaging cut fir trees to shelter birds during the winter..... my garden would not be the same without the sight and sounds of birds! My favourite is the House Wren..... I’m always sad when they leave every fall .... their song is enchanting 🥰
So informative and very well done, beautiful video! We have lots of birds here too and many places for them to shelter and forage for food but I also enjoy watching them at the bird feeders. Thanks for the great video 💚👩🏼🌾
I really appreciate this video because you get the knowledge and love of birds to even more people and we gardeners really can do something to save and support birds🤗 so Thank you! Greetings, Judit
I love your videos! I wanted to add that I've positioned my bird feeders near our kitchen-family room windows so that I can glance out the window and see them at any time. If possible, also position them next to shrubs or small trees, as birds like somewhere to hide. Happy New Year!
I really enjoyed this video. We plug in two heated bird baths for the winter here in Southern Wisconsin. I feed a variety of bird seed each morning and enjoy watching them especially this time of year. Happy New Year!
I am also curious about getting a good bird bath heater as I live in zone 6b, central Maryland. Currently the temp is 32 and expecting freezing rain this morning.
In Wisconsin they are available at stores like FleetFarm and Farm and Fleet. The brand in the current FleetFarm add has the API (brand) one on sale. I also have another on a tall wood box that is more shallow for the smaller birds. Birds here enjoy the water all winter long. I would think most bird food supply stores also have the heated bird baths.
House sparrows are enemies of bluebirds. They will destroy their nests and kill even adult bluebirds. My neighbors think it’s cute that house sparrows use bluebird boxes for raising their young and now there’s a huge flock of house sparrows running the show. Feeding house sparrows is a mistaken kindness if you want to establish a flock of bluebirds. Great video!
It’s true they’re attracted to the same food. The best thing to do is not allow them access to bird houses. Options are to provide houses with a 1-inch hole for smaller birds to use or if you provide a house with a larger hole keep removing the nest if sparrows take over. To be successful the whole community needs to join in. There’s the challenge.
Danielle, Happy New Year! Thank you for these tips. I would love to put in a birdbath however right now I already fear seeing the baby birds being attacked by neighbourhood cats when the birds are learning to fly or are feeding .
Aww bummer Eileen. Have you seen the very tall shepherds hooks with the small bird baths? It's more like a small Tupperware that sits in a hoop high on the hook. Maybe that would be an option?
Birds will take my sunflower seedlings 🌱. Have an idea of how to keep the birds from taking them so the sunflower 🌻 can get nice and tall to bloom? Thanks 😊
Hi Kim. Our dog Grace did want to eat the winterberry when she was a puppy. She is never outside alone, but it's definitely something to think about. Holly might be a safer option since the leaves would deter our dogs, or place the winterberry in a location your dog does not access to.
The birds at 2:28 are called house sparrows and they’re super invasive in North America. If you ever sees them using a house, plug the hole immediately. I know it’s sad, but they are very aggressive and kill our native birds for the boxes, so it’s very necessary.
I just use houses with smaller holes. I've never had a sparrow get into my chickadee or wren houses. I don't have the heart to kill them; it isn't their fault they're here.

Thanks for all the great tips. A garden without birds would seem incomplete.

Great ideas, thanks for the tips on attracting blue birds, I will be giving this a try.

Great info Barbara. Thank you for sharing that. I have never seen an Oriole in real life before!
Got to ❤️the birds... they go hand in hand with the garden. Great tips.

Hi Judy! That's so wonderful about your husband and birds. I bet you have some beautiful birds in Florida!
Such lovely birds 🧡
Oh yes, I love birds as well! Additionally, garden berries and insects attract birds that will never come to a feeder. Great video!
Love to hear the bird songs in the morning
Excellent information
Great video and excellent tips!
Thank you for your video, I love the birds coming to my garden.
Great info. RUclips suggested your channel to me today and I'm going to binge on so many videos
Great information 🎉

Thank you for the tips! I love watching the birds and you gave me some great ideas to help incorporate more bird friendly areas!
I learned so much from this video, thank you! I have been wanting to make our yard more bird friendly and now I know how.
Yes! Your tips are useful for sure. I will put these to practice. Thank you.

Hi Sue! I've been wondering about those heated bird baths. If your happy with yours - would you mind sharing where you purchased it?
I am also curious about getting a good bird bath heater as I live in zone 6b, central Maryland. Currently the temp is 32 and expecting freezing rain this morning.

I do wish you had identified the wings of feathers but must say I really enjoyed your video & love that you look after them as they look after you.
Hi Jo! If you see one you're curious about, let me know the timestamps and I'll do my best to help!
Thank you so much !
It's good to help house and feed our birds since there population has been decimated here in the US
Couldn’t see the bottom, but I’m pretty sure we have the same bird bath! Which I’m very fond of🪶

How can you prevent them though? I live in the Midwest and I attract all kinds of birds but won’t the same food attract them all?

great video , so much good info.. i was wondering what is the type of tree thats behind you in this video ?
Hi there! It's a Japenese Cedar.
Have you used a garden design app? Any recommendations?
❤️
Birds will take my sunflower seedlings 🌱. Have an idea of how to keep the birds from taking them so the sunflower 🌻 can get nice and tall to bloom? Thanks 😊
I have a similar issues with bunnies. I cover them with bird netting until they are about a foot tall.
@@NorthlawnFlowerFarmandGardens thank you! Great idea!
I used to have bird feeder, unfortunately had to taken out due to mice, snake issues. How do I prevent them from backyard ?.
I am thinking about getting Winterberries, but I have dogs. Does your dog get into the Winterberries or any other berry type plants?

What is the name of the yellow tree/shrub behind you?
Hi! It's a Japense Cedar.
Remove the perch on the birds house! They don’t need it and it helps predator to enter
Birds use my pool as their birdbath :/
