This is a fantastic video! About 20 years ago I built and put up about 6 bluebird boxes in hopes of attracting bluebirds. Instead, all the boxes were inhabited by tree swallows. I quickly came to appreciate and love them, especially for their eating of flying insects. I've seen a few bluebirds in my yard here and there in recent years, so I think I'll build some more boxes and tailor them more for bluebirds. I don't mind too much the other birds taking them because I love having all birds around, but I sure would be extra happy to have my favorite song birds move in. Thank you for making such an informative video!
You can find info on how to keep tree swallows and bluebirds away from each other. Sometimes you have to remove the swallow nest a few times, they will build elsewhere, bluebirds will have problems doing so.
Lol did you just say, "southern states like PA"? I live in west TN, and have visited PA. Loved it!! But, I wouldn't consider it a southen state. Btw... We have a bluebird house! We love our precious bluebirds! 💙🐦💙
Live in Colesville, MD, 2020 pair of Bluebirds visited my garden mid February providing birdbath and provided dried mealyworms feeder. Bluebirds built completed nest in front yard in a pvc Gilbertson nesting box on March 26 and layed 1st egg on the 28th. With 5th egg on April 1st. The 5 eggs hatched on April 15. The 5 nestlings fledged 19 days on May 4th. Female completed 2nd nest May 21st and layed 5th egg May 27. Bluebird nestlings fledged 15 days old June 25th.
In the foothills in southern Maine we are blessed with flocks of bluebirds.... The Cornell bird videos really draws them in.... This woman knows her birds....
This is the most well put together video and so loaded with gorgeous pictures as well as info regarding a few other birds as well. I especially loved the pictures of different nests to help identify nests more easily. We do have 21 nesting boxes for our favorite northern bluebirds! Thank you!!
Thank you for this extremely informative and concise video. I have a pair of Bluebirds flying back and forth from one box to the next, it's so funny watching them as they cannot decide which one to nest in. They literally spent an entire day going back and forth, 2 hours on top of one house, then in and out if the other, I think they were deciding on the safer bet as we have several cats roaming around. I did end up putting up a flimsy garden fence around the post to deter the cats from climbing the wood post, they won't be able to stand on the thin wire. Birds rule at my house - Parrots, chickens, and wild birds....God's little creations 🐦🐥🐓🦜!
Thank you for all your time and hard work putting this Video together for us. I've been making Bluebird Nesting Boxes for over 10 yrs now, I advertise them on a local community website, it gives me a great feeling knowing, I'm making an impact on their successful reproduction. I'm so Blessed to be able to make an impact increasing their population. A birdbath, please keep it cleaned for them, I'm going to say, besides a Nesting Box, is the best attraction to start birds to visit your area/yard. Birds will find food, somewhere, somehow, WATER definitely will make them a regular visitor, and Yes, birds Love to take a bath, sometimes it's a PARTY to them. I have so many bluebirds now thanks to this video! I have learned much! They DO love mealworms. I have freeze dried right now but plan on purchasing live ones. Thank you, The Bird House!
Hubby was putting out mealworms and thinking the bluebirds found them because the dish emptied fairly quickly. After some observation, I found that chipmunks think mealworms are *delicious!*
Hi Liz, Bermuda here. Thanks for all the helpful information. We have lots of Eastern Bluebirds here, and many people put up bluebird boxes in their yards, and they are in most public parks. This process of 'greening the world' is getting popular here and working well. Keep well and safe.
Nice video. I have enjoyed Bluebirds for years with a mesh dried-worm feeder hanging a few feet off of my screened back porch. Amazing as I live close to uptown Charlotte (NC) fairly close to many other houses, so wherever the worms are, they will find them, all seasons, and more each year. Love 'em!
I live in the woods and small mixed flocks of bluebirds and robins spend some time with me in the winter. They like to visit my little bird pond. You're so right about moving water - it's like a bird magnet.
@@phoebezhang7008 I put them in a bowl with a little water and pop them in the microwave for a minute sometimes. It's really great for the little chicks when they become developed enough to be fed them . It's pretty funny watching the fledglings learning to feed themselves. The only thing is that we really need the bluebirds to eat as man bugs and larvae as possible. It's great to feed them dried meal worms in the winter especially . Other birds like them too Cardinals, Robins ect .
Great guide on attracting Bluebirds !. I actually pair two boxes each season 15 to 20 feet apart, not so much to take care of our English house sparrow problem, but to allow tree swallows and bluebirds peacefully co exist in over lapping territory instead of them competing with each other for the same nest box. It works here in the north east. As far as feeding bluebirds goes, I feed dried mealworm year round from an enclosed feeder. They eat from it year round. Winter when food is scarce and breeding season for the nestlings. They also will take crushed egg shell in the breeding season from a platform feeder.
Have been having blue birds in my yard for years . This past May 19 I was fortunate to see five nestlings successfully take flight! They have stayed around as the parents have already started another nest and momma bird is setting on about 4 eggs. Keep seeing the young ones flying around in the yard from trees to bushes and back to the first bird house even. They like to perch atop the birdhouse. Believe when this second brood has successfully left this second nest...they will build once more in the first house. It’s common for total of three broods from March through July! Lovely birds
I'm waiting for a clutch to hatch any day. 5 eggs. Another fellow bluebird 🐦 house just had a bunch fly off. We've had two different famines renesting in our houses for years. I assume it's the same families living in the houses every year. Ours are eastern variants. I live in North Alabama.
I've had several neighbors and friends say they have had bluebirds in their yards and in fact, we had one visit our birdbath early this spring! So I hope I'm not too late in implementing some of these suggestions. Hopefully we'll have a bluebird family soon:)
We use to have the powdery blue birds in Western Oregon but they have not been around for years i was 10 last time I saw them and I am 61 now. I just loved them
i have had blue birds visit for the first time in my yard since i move here 42 yrs ago just thrilled to see them,,,i will go get mealy worms to encourage they remain thank you for a great video

Bluebirds are so pretty! 💙 In my state we gave the less-vibrant Western Bluebird. I’ve been back East a few times but never saw the Eastern variety. One day! 💙
The birdhouse with the slot works very well. I watched the sparrows check it out and leave. We fledged one family of bluebirds from it in 2020. Upstate NY.
We have a very few Bluebirds here in the panhandle of Florida. They are beautiful, I wish we had more. I've done some things to attract them, that helped somewhat - I do see more than I used to.
I've been a birder in the upper midwest all my life, but I've simply never been near an area that sees a lot of these wonderful birds. Came across a pair in the early spring a couple years ago. Such a nice bird to see. Used to see Mountain Bluebirds around my families home in Colorado. Spotted one while visiting the Vail Valley last year, but she had virtually no color, which was unfortunate.
Excellent video. I have several nest boxes in my yard and have seen many pairs of Swallows and Bluebirds use them over the years. I have had great luck with Gilbertson nest box. Bluebirds and Swallows love it. No other box design will stop sparrows. Regarding meal worms I had great luck with freeze dried meal worms soaked in water. Bluebirds love it but when Robins arrive on the scene its game over.
Last week when it was sunny but quite cold, four bluebirds came to splash around in my birdbath that still had small icebergs floating in it. Brrrr, hearty birds. This week I've seen them looking in my four bird houses, and stepping inside. Still a little early for nest building here.
Nice. For past 2 years had them in their bb house. So far they are working at their second brood this year 2020. Last year 3 broods. Very clean birds. Male takes away the sack of poop and dumps it away from the house. Took me awhile to figure out what looked like a cocoon.
Originally from Rochester,I enjoyed seeing many bluebirds in the Genesee Valley area. Here in TN my bluebirds have laid eggs already by 2nd week in March.
Thank you so much! This was very informative, interesting, and helpful. I'm trying to attract blue birds to our campground site in Central Ohio. I've got a nest with 3 eggs that I originally removed , doing "spring cleaning,"and not sure what type of bird they were from. But I didn't get rid of them. I put the whole nest & eggs in our RV and went home to do some research. Realized they were Bluebird eggs, I went back the next day, placed the nest exactly like it was, and hopefully mom & dad will return. I do have dried meal worms, but will now start to moisten them. Thanks again for a great video!
Thank you that was very interesting. I have been a Bluebird lover for 40 years. I have had nesting Blue birds in southern MA and in Farmington NM but since I have been here in Southern NH I can not get them to stay in the yard. I know all the tricks but they will visit only but not nest. I have good houses for them and I have put out meal worms. There are many Chickadees and Tufted titmouse's in the yard and they do nest here as well as Robins and Catbirds.
I am in Benton Kansas and I have seven bluebird houses out I have a large acreage and have been feeding meal worms for the last three years are usually get three generations of young every year and average 25 baby bluebirds three times a year
Tom I am in southern Missouri and like you have Bluebird Houses. Hatching 2 to 3 hatches a year. Saw 4 enter a house during this killing COLD SPELL. Found 2 dead in one house. Several dead on the ground, found a female on the ground alive, brought her in but she died later that day. In total lost all 8 bluebirds in our area. My heart and yard are empty without them here. SAD. Can only hope AFTER 15 years of having hatched out 2 to 3 bunches of young BLUEBIRDS a year, some will return to our yard. Hope yours survived that killer winter storm. Susan
Great video...I place my bluebird boxes facing an open field. Also, use a predator guard on the front of the box. These help prevent animals such as cats and raccoons from getting into the box.
I read an article from Georgia Tech, i believe, where they did some visual research on bkue bird house openings. What they found is that an oval opening attracted more blue birds than round and the slot design was leadt favorite
Interesting video. I would disagree with bird size though. Have many bluebirds around me here in AL and have to say they are no way the size of a robin. Much smaller. More thd size of a sparrow.
I built a winter box for mine. Built it much larger than a normal box and painted it black to absorb heat. Also used 1 3/4” thick wood to hold the suns heat longer at night. Sealed it tight to stop drafts except the floor in case rain gets thru the entrance hole. Filled it with cattail fluff for insulation. I have 8 boxes already and adding more to my 8 acres. I have bluebirds everywhere.
@@slammyiron In the east you have to have a very specific size opening to get the blue bird and it is like 1 1/4 in or so. Don't remember exactly since was looking for blue bird houses last month. Snake ate the babies and the parents left with the one remaining when it could fly. You are right, robins are larger.
I've got to try the water with a solar fountain. They are not very expensive. Bluebirds didn't eat the dried mealworms i put out. Going to try some of these other tips. Thanks for posting!
Great information and presentation here. I thought I knew bluebirds fairly well, but learned quite a bit from this video. We put up a bluebird box on a pole in late March 2021, and hope to see some Eastern Bluebirds soon here in central Oklahoma. So far, no birds have shown interest. Perhaps I need to provide the meal worms. Thank You!
One of our our bluebird pairs abandoned a house after she laid 4 eggs, moved to another bluebird house and had 5 more eggs last year, which they raised to fledge. we don't know why they left the other house, they made the nest, had the 4 eggs and then abandoned it. we have bluebirds every single year, and there are lot of myths out there about them, such as they do not need to be in the open, or in open fields, the houses do not need to be white, they will nest in a house on a fence, and they will abandon a nest with eggs in it. ours like the house in the garden. lots of bugs to eat.
Great job..learned a lot.especially the use of your shed. As an ex big time pigeon guy when I was a kid, have fondness for their cousins, the doves. I have doves that next in my Leland cypress trees, and do not want them injured. Do u see all that get trapped in your trap? Any solution for this? Thank you, very much for doing this video
Sparrow spookers! Great! Works also for feeders. OH! How funny! I've watched the wren go in and out of two houses and wondered what was going on! Then they abandoned one. This is great information. Who knew?
I am having a difficult time attracting bluebirds to my yard. None have ever come to the bluebird feeder and the mealworms are always eaten by starlings with an occasional wren. My parents live about one mile away and they have so many bluebirds. My yard is open and is more ideal for bluebirds versus my parents' yard which has heavy woods behind it. I guess I will keep trying to attract them with mealworms and put out some bluebird houses in a couple months.
We are looking forward to reestablishing our bluebird population to our yard. We were so sad to find 4 male bluebirds had frozen in our birdhouse during a two week extended period of extreme cold weather this winter. We will try your ideas. I am wondering about your thoughts on a roosting house this winter.
Thank you for the video. I live in Southern Indiana. I usually have bluebirds at least in one of my three houses but I spent all of March and half of April removing house sparrow nests and finally gave up. My neighbors have spotted bluebirds in the area as of the beginning of April but I could not get them to nest in my boxes this year. I have not seen any in our area so far though. I am wondering if the abundance of house sparrows are keeping them away. I will try some of your suggestions that I have not tried before. Wish me luck!
I live in Southern California my fiancé and I build a birdhouse two years ago and placed it in our Open yard we have birdfeeders and we are track lots of read face sparrow type birds and finally last month western bluebird which I never seen. I enjoyed watching them coming in and out feeding the young but sadly was not there to watch the young fly way. My question is should I clean out the nest to encourage next year or should I leave the nest there in box ?
Great info! We put up four houses but are often wondering who is building those nests. We have two successful bluebird nests this year (and one where the house sparrows killed a bluebird--damn them!)
I use a spring loaded trap you can purchase that easily mounts inside the house and can be moved house to house in minutes if you see sparrows taking it over. It blocks the entrance after the sparrow enters. I tied a string to mine so I can pull from outside the house to open the flap after I catch them inside. I hold a big jar over the entrance and the sparrow will fly into the jar. Snacks for my Tom cat.
@@jamesbarron1202 the van ert trap is a life saver! I have been trapping all winter as well with a repeating trap. I am up to 70 or so. Hope I put enough of a dent in the ratbird population so bluebirds and tree swallows return. I leave them out for possums and foxes.
@@uhill74 they would make good fertilizer for the garden. They even sell feather mill fertilizer from chicken processing factories. My 12 year old Tom cat passed away this week so I’m using mine in the garden. I fish a lot and put fish bones/guts and all my vegetables and fruit waste back into the garden. I also have a repeating trap but I’m only catching good birds so I put it away 2 weeks ago. I’ve eliminated my sparrows pretty well now.

Susan
@@martylesnick2032 wonder if there is some sort of solar powered heater that could be used to keep them warm
Great video...I place my bluebird boxes facing an open field. Also, use a predator guard on the front of the box. These help prevent animals such as cats and raccoons from getting into the box.
Thank you...very informative.
Awesome video and awesome content. You've got me and mine hooked. Thank you.
I read an article from Georgia Tech, i believe, where they did some visual research on bkue bird house openings. What they found is that an oval opening attracted more blue birds than round and the slot design was leadt favorite
This is true, check out the bluebird houses from Duncraft,as an example.Pinterest also has some fantastic ideas.
Interesting video. I would disagree with bird size though. Have many bluebirds around me here in AL and have to say they are no way the size of a robin. Much smaller. More thd size of a sparrow.
Yes. I agree. A little bit smaller than robin. We have them in our neighborhood here in upstate NY.
I agree.
Grear tutorial. This is a great program for all ages.
I live Charleston South Carolina! I have been having mom bluebird and dad bluebird
Good information, very well presented. Thank you
what a great video! thanks
Great video! Very informative.
This video was EXCELLENT‼ Thank you so much🤗
Clean out the nest(s) before winter. I've noticed that a few birds pile into the box on colder winter nights to stay warm.
@@jamesbarron1202 That's awesome! Build it and they will come! :)
Yep, woodpeckers and nuthatches use them as well during winterm
Former Rochestarian, hockey mom ;) in NC, we have lots!
You must have monster bluebirds in NY. In NC, they’re about half the size of robins.
Same here in S.E. Pennsylvania
The narrator made a mistake. They are not Robin size unless we are talking European Robin.
Same here in SC, Steve. I'm not hanging 23 minutes to get what I can google in 2 seconds...
That was my only complaint on the video was the size thing..1/2 the size of robins.
Thank you. Very Informative!!!
I live on the edge of lake erie in NY and didn't know they winter here-I have never seen one in winter!
Thank You!
Thank you!!! Beautiful!!!
Very nice video!
the birds look cute
great channel
Great job..learned a lot.especially the use of your shed. As an ex big time pigeon guy when I was a kid,
have fondness for their cousins, the doves. I have doves that next in my Leland cypress trees, and do not want them injured. Do u see all that get trapped in your trap? Any solution for this? Thank you, very much for doing this video
Well done!
Sparrow spookers! Great! Works also for feeders. OH! How funny! I've watched the wren go in and out of two houses and wondered what was going on! Then they abandoned one. This is great information. Who knew?
Loved it, thank you
You re right...they're much smaller than robins...I live upstate ny and in winter in the meadows I ve counted 13 at a time!
Great information! It is now late summer. Do I need to wait till late winter to start putting out mealworms?
I am having a difficult time attracting bluebirds to my yard. None have ever come to the bluebird feeder and the mealworms are always eaten by starlings with an occasional wren. My parents live about one mile away and they have so many bluebirds. My yard is open and is more ideal for bluebirds versus my parents' yard which has heavy woods behind it. I guess I will keep trying to attract them with mealworms and put out some bluebird houses in a couple months.
That is exactly my experience. We have had a couple of bluebirds feed early in the season, and then the starlings just take over.
Wonderful info, thanks for your share.
Great job.
We are looking forward to reestablishing our bluebird population to our yard. We were so sad to find 4 male bluebirds had frozen in our birdhouse during a two week extended period of extreme cold weather this winter. We will try your ideas. I am wondering about your thoughts on a roosting house this winter.
Can you buy a blue bird and place him in the nest?
Well-done video. Thank you!
Interesting, learned a lot, going to tweak my bluebird box
I live in Southern California my fiancé and I build a birdhouse two years ago and placed it in our Open yard we have birdfeeders and we are track lots of read face sparrow type birds and finally last month western bluebird which I never seen. I enjoyed watching them coming in and out feeding the young but sadly was not there to watch the young fly way. My question is should I clean out the nest to encourage next year or should I leave the nest there in box ?
Thank you for this video I learned a lot from you
Thank you so much for the information
Excellent information
Great info! We put up four houses but are often wondering who is building those nests. We have two successful bluebird nests this year (and one where the house sparrows killed a bluebird--damn them!)
House sparrows will kill adult blue birds and their babies!!
Trap the sparrows. You need to kill the males. Otherwise not worth puttimg bluebird houses up.
