It's funny because when we "learn" something new or create a new "trend" and share it and it becomes a ne "thing" it's actually not new by any means. Our early ancestors did not wash their hair, they did not wear bras & underwear, they did not eat processed foods. The trends we are creating now days was the norm to them. So Basically we need to just get back to our early ancestral ways of living. As close to natural as possible while simultaneously live in a modern civilization. IMO

hi Hannah! I've been no poo for almost a year now and one thing I've learned that helps is before you get into the shower you scritch and preen, and that's where you gently massage your scalp and then distribute the oils to the length of your hair, and jump in the shower and scritch once more under the running water and that will help get any dirt and gunk off your scalp and I promise you will notice a big difference

I hope you're using coconut oil to shave because it's UHMAZING! It leaves everything super smooth and I don't need to moisturizer afterward because the oil. I also never have razor burn anymore. It's seriously worth a try.

I haven't washed my hair in well over a year. I did some experimenting with natural rinses. I tried baking soda BAD IDEA NO ONE EVER DO THAT. My scalp was so oily and itchy to the point people probably thought I had lice lol. Anyways I used apple cider vinegar for a year then a few months ago noticed my hair was getting oily (I was using the rinse once a week or sometimes less) and my scalp was itchy so I am now not using anything and I have no oil problems and my scalp is healthier than ever. I've always my whole life struggles with an itchy scalp and it's nice to finally have some relief. I love you Hannah and I'm so happy you've found the no poo world. I use essential oils with sea water (I live near the Oregon coast) and sometimes a little lemon juice all mixed together as my product. I don't straighten my hair or curl it because my natural hair is beautiful so I'm lucky I don't find myself needing hair spray. ALSO my hair (curly) has never been more attractive and my curls stay together and I don't have that awkward "oil free frizz" I like to call it.

I'm a hairstylist (and vegan!) and I only wash my hair once every two weeks. I use vegan shampoo and conditioners. Shampoo is meant to open up your cuticle and and help wash away all of the elements and grease and sweat and keep your hair follicles clear. Conditioner closes up that cuticle to protect your hair shaft so that you won't dry out your hair. Your scalp adjusts over time to how often you wash it usually regardless of the method. If this method works for you that's great though!

Awesome move, Hannah. I started out using apple cider vinegar but now I do the water only method (scritch and preen). It's been about over a year now since I dumped all hair products and I love it. It was an adjustment while my hair balanced out, and while that was happening I wore my hair in a bun a lot but now my hair is so healthy. Even with exercise my hair doesn't get greasy anymore and its nice not to have to wash it everyday. 😘

I am on day 13 of "no poo" or anything else in my hair but water. The first like 11 days my hair was like an oil slick, but gradually I started to notice that I would wake up and it would look more like "normal." I only wash with water every four or five days. Today is the thirteenth and there is a huge noticeable improvement.

i stopped washing my hair, i did need to rinse with warm water every day for the oil build up ( nadia from raw for the soul is my friend and she said to give it a month) I went a couple days without rinsing i just left my hair up, and it turned into a HUGE grease ball and i couldn't even run my fingers through.... i rinsed under the shower head with watered down shampoo ( every soap for every kid or something like that) and kind feel like I was able to jump start back into the groove I was in. I do see that rinsing with just water AND brushing out my hair is important, I have pretty think hair and its very wavy. Anyways, I LOVE no longer washing every god damn day like I used to. Right now I am down to washing it every 3 weeks. And hopefully that grease ball never happens again and I can just be done with washing with shampoo forever. My hair is super full and I LOVE IT, as opposed to used to get flat easy and I would hot iron it daily or curl it and somehow end up hating it lol. Self love is all about simplicity

I went No poo 2-3 years ago. I went through several methods as my scalp and hair adjusted to it. Last summer I found my oil production went into overdrive for the last time really, and I needed a stronger method. But by the Fall, it had calmed down again.
Now I use almost nothing but distilled water. The excess minerals in my municipal tap water make my sebum tough and waxy. Using distilled water keeps it smooth and skinny. I don't even wash it in the shower anymore. I massgae, scritch, and preen. Then I spray it down with distilled water and air dry it in the sun. I find this cleanses the perfect amount of sebum from my hair.
Good luck on your no poo journey! I started with baking soda and ACV just like you do 3 years ago!

Oooohh, please be careful not to massage your hair too much with your nails. I have very thin and fine hair and I learned the hard way when it comes to scrubbing your scalp with your fingernails because it leads to excessive hair fall, or even bald spots! Again, everyones hair is different, but if anyones hair is like mine, I just thought it would give my two cents. :) Its better to scrub lightly but longer with your fingertips.

At first I had a lot more oil in my hair that normal and I would wash with shampoo only once every three or four months but gradually I stopped all products and now I just rinse with hot water. I transitioned to no poo at the beginning of september too and was really exited for this video, when you announced it :) I started with rye flour, but that didn't work that well for me. Now I use banking soda with a vinegar rinse at my hair is very soft and clean. I'll try only vinegar as well. Thank you for your experiences and tipps.
I came from washing my hair every second day and now I only wash it once a week, too. And it doesn't look greasy at the end of the week.
I hesitated a long time to try no poo on my self, but it is totally worth it! For the first 3 weeks I always wore my hair in a bun, but now it adjusted prefectly. I really can not recommend it enough to everyone :)

My worry is the transition time... How long did it take your hair to adjust and for your scalp to stop producing so much oil? Also, my hair is very fine and tends to tangle easily. I went back to a vegan/cruelty free PH balanced shampoo/conditioner and it fixed everything and even soothed my scalp. This, however, was during the time I was pretty low fat so maybe now that I eat more fats it'd be safer.

+Karen Allmond I use the Alba Botanica brand in mango/hawaiian line.
It's cruelty free, ph balanced, sulfate free, and vegetarian
ingredients. Sometimes my local store has a sale on the items,
sometimes it's cheaper on Amazon. I don't recommend the coconut scent
because I personally had issues with that and then I read that if your
hair is naturally protein rich coconut products could be an issue for
you and can end up closing the hair cuticles making it difficult to
absorb water/remove product. Not sure if that's correct, but I've had a
lot of success with the mango scent. If you have trouble getting shampoo
all the way through your hair like I did recently (after using the
coconut scent), I went with a clarifying shampoo that unfortunately had
sulfates. I'm just using up the bottle though every other wash or so
just to make sure my hair is actually getting clean. For the clarifying
shampoo I am using Avalon Organics Lemon scent which is also cruelty
free/vegan. Whole Foods didn't have a sulfate-free clarifying shampoo or
I would've gone with something else. Good luck!

soooooooo. my question is about your make up. why do you wear make up? have you read the ingredients? our skin absorbs everything we expose to it.
do you know if any natural alternative?
    about me:
I stopped washing my hair and stopped wearing deodorant. The chemicals, plastic waste, my sensitive skin, and living a healthier, more simplistic lifestyle has become a priority. Saving the $ is also a plus. I have also stopped wearing make up. eye shadow is made of talc. Which, like the sulfates and parabens in shampoo, the glycol in lotions, hair product, and junk food, IS cancer causing. Ever get an eyelash in your eye? I have and it suddenly occurred to me that I now had talc and mascara in my eye.
I would love to hear your thoughts.
    thanks for reading

I started washing my hair with only water in the middle of November, and the first week or so I could definitely feel the grease build up near the top of my head (but not the root). it progressively got worse because I was brushing my hair with a bamboo brush that I failed to clean. I stopped using that for about a week now, and after a water only shower (which this week I only had to do twice), my hair feels pretty clean all over, and looks 100% fine. it has more volume then any shampoo has ever given me. and it smells fine. as for my hair type... I have three times more hair on my head then the average person and always have. I always have hairless because of this but with water only my hair doesn't come out in as large amounts in the shower. my only lingering downside of transitioning is a few locks at the back of my head that diffidently feel not clean, but I'm hoping with more showers it will eventually come out like had happened for the rest of my hair. I'm sure this type of hair routine won't work for everyone, but it works for me so far, and I highly recommend people to try it because it's so low maintenance, saves money, and makes you feel all natural and flawless :)

Super interesting!! :) but I thought the reason for not shampooing was not using salt in your hair? Then you spray salt in... surely that will then go into the water system? Defo considering trying this!

Apple cider vinegar is great, as well as baking soda. If someone wants to still use shampoos the only one I would suggest is the Jaggett's soap bar. It's made with oils and functions as a conditioner as well.
While as a leave-in conditioner you can homemade flax seed gel, if you want more hold. I'm super curly so I do that.

I'm currently washing my hair with rye flower and then I rinse it with either regular vinegar 1:10 with water or with lemon juice mixed also about 1:10 with water. I have bleached blonde hair and after this method it is difficult to brush, I need to be careful - BUT once I brush it and once my hair dries, it is super soft and silky afterward. And one huge benefit - the hair dries faster. There are also hair soaps - no chemicals, just healthy oils. I have one form Manna, but haven't used it yet. I unfortunately don't like apple cider vinegar, the smell makes me nauseous for some reasons - too bad, I just bought a bottle of it ;) well, I'll use it for something else in the kitchen. Anyway, I feel like I don't want to go back to regular products anymore. My hair is softer and the scalp feels great. I will continue bleaching my hair, I with manic panic which is vegan, because I have a lot of grey in dark ash blonde and I'm just not ready for it. I will stop once my entire hair will turn grey. But I have the impression that despite bleaching my hair no poo workers great.

I tried this method for around 6 months, but my hair was always extremely greasy at the roots and like straw at the ends. I couldn't even brush it in the end, because the grease and build-up made it bunch up. Maybe it was because I have a lot of hair, but who knows. Now I condition and wash my hair once a week and have no problems.

I tried the no-poo method for awhile but I think it contributed to my hairloss. I'm not balding or anything crazy but I'm a 26 year old male and I'm predisposed to a receding hairline and I recently learned this is caused by DHT, which is a hormone that can build up on the scalp if you don't wash it enough. I think guys should be wary of the no-pop, but I'm happy it's working for you Hannah, your hair looks great as always~!

I haven't washed my hair with shampoo for four years but I do use a conditioner because my hair is naturally very dry so without conditioner I couldn't manage my hair.I just use water to clean my scalp and never get dandruff or build up so it works for me.You can make homemade conditioners with coconut milk, coconut oil, almond oil, olive oil ect for dry hair it leaves it really moisterised it can be expensive though not sure about naturally oily hair though. My hair is at its most healthiest it grows super fast now and is in much better shape overall.

The no poo method is not for everyone, especially using ACV ACV is alkalizing , our skin has a Acid Mantle its a fine slightly acidic film that acts as a barrier to bacteriaIf that gets disrupted bacteria overgrowth can ocure as known a sabaceous dermatitis....not pretty And also cause inflamed sebaceous glands ...pimples on your head :(Our skin likes a PH of around 4.5-6.2 slightly acid Same for our face if you want clear skin ACV seems to work as a ocasional rinse to clarify, if your hair feels striped fix the PH issue And a nother way that I found works well is CO washing ...using only a light non silicone organic Conditione to cleanse No Shampoo

Last year for months I didn't use any products. I just would wash my hair with warm water and I'd massage my scalp then comb my hair under the water for a bit. Every morning I'd blow dry ny roots a little to refresh it, and every night I would do that scritch and preen thing where you massage your hair to get the oils going, then comb it through for awhile. I'd wash like once a week. I didn't find it overly oily really. Then after a bit I went a few months using a mixture of rye flour and water. Now I use vegan shampoo and conditioners, but still just once a week or so. All three ways seem pretty alright. I just like how easier it is with the products. Lol Plus it's so weird actually smelling your natural hair smell. I started buying essential oils to brush a few drops in.

isn't the salt in your sea spray going to negatively impact the trees around your house?

  • @caramelushca
    @caramelushca 8 лет назад

I think using ACV instead of just water is a good idea. It cleans better than just water, plus it closes the hair cuticle and makes your hair shinier and smoother. And from what I know the scalp likes a more acidic environment, so using ACV probably helps to prevent itchiness etc. I only use it as a rinse after shampooing (instead of conditioner), but it helps a lot with scalp itchiness and makes my hair softer and easier to detangle.

    • @caramelushca
      @caramelushca 8 лет назад +1

Oh Hannah, I forgot to mention. If you ever find ACV doesn't do the trick and you need a more powerful cleaning agent, you can use the liquid from boiled soap nuts to wash your hair. It does a great job and leaves your hair super soft :)
And P.S. If you use the sea salt spray won't that be a problem for your plants when you rinse it out of your hair?

Great video Hannah! I stopped washing my hair November of 2014. The first 8 weeks I was a greasy mess!! It wasn't pretty but it slowed down and normalized. It was very seldom that I would even get it wet. Everyday I would brush from roots to tips really good...this would spread my natural oil through the hair. I couldn't believe how awesome my hair looked and felt...it was so soft and it didn't smell. After a year and a half, it got more difficult to brush the oil through my hair so now I have an organic shampoo that I only use once every few months. Also, I have naturally curly hair and all that brushing would brush out my curls...so now if I feel like being curly for a couple of days I will wet it and let it air dry. I find myself doing this more often the last couple of months. Right now it has been 3 weeks since I wet it...and it feels and looks great! I totally encourage you to keep going with your new hair routine...you won't regret it. Keep up the good work on the videos...I love watching! Candi

i did the acv..and i would not recomend it. you and i have similar hair type, so im just going to say what happened to me. i tried on two different efforts, both lasting about 3 months (the second time was kind of a "maybe i didnt do it right. ill try again" effort), and both times my hair was damaged from it. it was brittle and super frizzy and just not pleasant. there was really no oil to my hair either. and those results showed themselves after a week and half to 2 weeks. upon further research i realized that acv was too acidic for my hair to handle.
now if you feel this is working for you, great! but i would recommend keeping a close eye on any changes. i ended up needing to chop off a good 4 inches after my little experiment ended the second time.

I went no-poo for like 4 years, and that's when my hair started to fall out. I could never really get rid of that initial oil buildup and would have to brush it out all the time. In addition to this, my scalp would have this gunk on it (which I assumed was dead skin cells from normal skin shedding mixed with the sebum scalp/hair oil) which was also very hard to get rid of. I tried conditioner only method, apple cider vinegar, baking soda, water only, and literally nothing worked. At the time I was living in Japan, which is a very humid climate, and my hair at the time was thick with fine hairs and curly. I just don't think it'll ever work for me, but I know a lot of people do it and I'm so envious!

I've been loving no-poo as well! Around 2 months ago I ditched shampoo and conditioner for a herbal no-poo formula made of fenugreek seed powder, amla powder, and yucca root powder mixed with some water. I initially LOVED the results but my hair started feeling "sticky" recently, so I stopped using anything whatsoever. It's been about a week and a half with only rinsing my hair pretty regularly with water, and the oiliness is definitely going down. I have heard of people using baking soda with the apple cider vinegar as well. I might try the apple cider vinegar and see how that works! I suggest you to look for "Sidr", is an herbal powder that you can use for wash your hair, is the best for blonde hairs because is not going to change your hair color. Some kind of herbs can give you a darker tone, like the one I use, called shikakai, but I have black hair so for me is not a big deal, but your blonde is amazing so that will be perfect for you. For keep your hair in a good healt without using any products I also reccomend you to have a try with another one call "Methi", is a powder that nourish your hair and is like the best thing ever! you and Derek should look into getting a wide tooth wooden comb for combing your hair when its dry (I wouldn't use it for detangling) its mainly just for scalp health and helping to distribute the natural oil the hair produces. apple cider vinegar is really good though it will pretty much eliminate any dandruff or itch and give the hair a really nice shine especially if you rinse it with cold water :) when you massage your scalp when you rinse your hair don't use your nails just use the pads of your fingers it stops you from scratching the scalp just had to say that haha

I am not in the same living situation as you, but I do understand the harsh salts and chemicals in traditional shampoo/conditioner and a lot of people just wash with conditioner now. I tried it, and it cleans my hair just as nicely as if I wash with shampoo. Now if conditioner cleans your hair just as nice, why would you wash with shampoo AND THEN conditioner on top of it. That's what is really drying out people's hair. I would either just use conditioner, or what I do now is I have a really healthy holistic soap with lot's of natural oils in it that I use to wash my body and face. If my hair isn't oily enough(like I just washed it a day or two ago), then I just put a teaspoon of coconut oil in a large glass that I keep by my shower, fill it up with warm water(to melt the oil) and slowly pour it all over my hair and let is sit while I clean my body/face, THEN I use the soap to wash it and it comes out beautiful, not too dry, but still gets a nice clean! Hair is different and people have to try different things.
But anyone who read all of my comment, long story short, DO NOT wash with BOTH shampoo and conditioner, I would try just one and definitely don't wash your hair every single day!

I know it's not vegan but using a boars hair bristle brush may help. It brings down the excess oils from the scalp all the way down to the ends to help condition and make your hair look less greasy at the roots. I haven't looked into it but maybe there's a vegan brush similar to it 😊

I've always had dry frizzy hair and I experimented in the past with no poo methods like baking soda and vinegar rinses but it didn't really work out at the time. A couple months ago I stopped using all soap because of eczema issues including shampoo since my scalp is one of my worst spots and honestly, I was surprised at how...nothing really changed? Like my hair didn't get awful because I stopped using shampoo and conditioner. It's still somewhat dry because of pre dyed ends I still have and my eczema but I just use a little argan oil and everything is good. I just rinse with water. It's just unnecessary to use harsh detergents when I don't put product in my hair. I don't see myself ever going back to a shampoo conditioner system. Honestly try it! You might be surprised. But like hannah said, I don't think it would work if you use hairspray and other styling products.
