      How did you keep your blood glucose levels from dropping too low during a fast that long?

    • @patrikkarlsson9463
      @patrikkarlsson9463 3 года назад +3

      @@JFCotman The body does that on it's own once you're fat adapted. Since you don't spike your blood glucose, there is no over correction in your insuline response to drive it down too low, it's just always at a steady level. Your body knows what to do if you just leave it to it and don't keep over stressing the system.
      It's a pretty amazing feeling to not ever have any spikes or crashes, everything is just in balance, the gut gets to rest and recover, and I don't have to keep stuffing my face with food that's bad for me. I've been on a steadily stricter keto and intermittent fasting routine for about six months now, and I can sustainably go 48 hours inbetween meals, while working out, without any ravenous hunger, mental dips or fatigue. I was scared to go for longer fasts, thinking that it would be painful and insufferable, but I just ended a five-day fast with a bulletproof coffe and an avocado (I know what he said about that, but I'm looking to extend high ketosis and autophagy, so avocado is the mildest yet more substantial than oil type of food I could think of, body seems ok with it so far), and I feel like I easily could have kept going. My gut has never felt this good and healthy before.
      Looking back, I feel like I was an addict, a food fiend, slavishly following neverending cravings, poisoning my body and my mind in an endless self-perpetuating cycle. I'm definitely going to go for another prolonged fast in a few months or so, the healing that takes place during a fast is just mind-blowing.

    Simple solution - After multiple extended fasts (up to 7 days), making a number of mistakes, and investigating this topic extensively- I have found for me and a number of my friends, the easiest solution for everyday people is to consume home-made bone broth 2-3 times every 4-6 hours after an EF. Then, add in some lean protein. Works well for the majority of people. If you can't make the broth at home, buy one from the refrigerated section of the supermarket, not the shelves.

      @@JFCotman My understanding is that they drop to extremely low levels that would look deadly under normal conditions, but that it isn't an issue during prolonged fasts. There are probably similar effects with people on carnivore diets. People like Fung don't tend to advocate fasts longer than 5-7 days, so for data on that kind of thing we tend to have to find research papers.

I'm on my 3rd day of fasting and I don't feel hungry or tired at all even though i'm doing mild exercise since i'm keeping my electrolyte levels up by drinking salt water. I'm gonna try to go for 5 days and then break it carefully using your advice. I hope to continue a 3-day fasting plan similar to yours after that to lose weight.
    Update: I can do 7 day fasts now!!! I slowly built up to it lol, after day 4, it's so easy, i don't even feel hungry anymore. (Wouldn’t recommend 4+ day fasts often tho, you start to see nutritional deficiencies)

    Great advice man. I recently plateaued a bit in my weight loss, so I decided on a 4-day fast to jump-start it. I broke it with a hearty soup made with all low FODMAP foods and kept the carbs down. I feel amazing. It was delicious, I had very little of the post refeed drowsiness, and my stomach isn't punishing me like it's done breaking fasts with unhealthy foods.
    I infused some olive oil with garlic and onions then discarded them. I used the infused olive oil to brown some beef and pork ribs and reserved. Cooked some diced carrots and red peppers in the olive oil and fat. Used a little organic, low sodium beef broth to scrape up the fond. Then I added the rest of the broth, a can of unsalted tomato sauce, water and put the ribs back in along with a venison bone. Seasoned with salt, black pepper, cayenne, and smoked paprika. Two hours later added larger chunks of carrots and parsnips. Half hour later added canned chickpeas and red pepper slices. I took the meat and bones out 15 minutes later to serve separately and 7 minutes later added spinach with chopped parsley and basil. I would've liked anything after 4 days of fasting, but I thought it was delicious, it didn't mess me up, and my family loved it too.

    our ancestors also hunted down a animal nd did not did something like "ok now lets find a watermelon first to gently break our fast", neither do other animals do something like that
    go for nutrient dense foods that restore your reserves, satisfiy your body and give you everything you need to accelerate fat loss (choose the right foods with right fats for example like cla, mct, omega3&7&9 etc.) and put you into a situation where you are ready to fast again

      @@MegaTinni oh okey, if you maybe want some adivce from me ( i was also overweight, was at 127kg and went within 3 months to 84kg todays weight) i can recommend you starting real fasting
      i dont really understand what you mean with "between fasts" so all i can say is try to implement a regular 1-3 day fast with keto (because if you still stick to keto, fasting will be A LOT easier and your fat loss greater as a result)
      try to adapt to OMAD, and then try alternate day fasting with OMAD and keep progressing until you adapt to a regular 1-3 day fast that you break with OMAD or maybe 2 meals and fast again
      if you stick to nutrient dense foods this will be effortless, and 1-3 day is the perfect sweetspot, its effortless to stick to yet still enough to really boost weight loss WITHOUT slowing your metabolsim because you pump up your hormones that preserve and spare muscle and burn fat (HGH, nor-epenephrine, nor adrenalin etc.)
      i did this exact same thing and its reall easy, especially now when you are at home because of that covid19 thing

I have heard from multiple people its imperative to do some kind of it ( like enemas, salt flushes, for longer fasts of course) or else you might get real sick, but the information is real scarce aswell. The second one is, how safe would fasting be in the current situation (pandemic) and how fasting and the way that you metabolize food can help you fight germs/viruses or make you either to each.!
    Either way, your channel is one of a kind! ( Also heartfelt channel recommendation for anybody whos reading this, "What I"ve Learned" Is a person tackling rather similar topics and more, at the same quality,!)

    I broke a 14 day water fast on watermelon, it felt incredible, my insulin sensitivity and taste sensitivity made it taste like the sweetest thing ever in life. However I tried a bowl of muesli a couple hours later.. oh god, it came out of me within 2 hours the same way it went in. I felt like dogshit: cramping, vomiting and almost went to the ER. Luckily I recovered after a night of sleeping and just bought gerber baby food and refed for a couple days with it and recovered. Don't be me. I am fortunate to have supplemented electrolytes (salt, magnesium, potassium, etc) during my fast, because refeeding syndrome could've seriously killed me.

      Romeo Golf You are intolerant to oats/ muesli. It’s not uncommon at all. In fact most of the people are intolerant to oats, muesli, quinoa and other similar grains. But rice is good to go. Consider this

      @@Leo-bq9zi I'm pretty sure its because I had zero stomach acid and lubricating factors in my digestive track after 14 days of only water dude. I can eat oats, muesli or grains any other day just fine now and don't have any symptoms of an allergy or intolerance to gluten.

      Probably didn't help that you were spiking your blood sugar quite significantly as well. Oats may be low GI as a carb, but for a 14 day water fast they might as well be a whole cake

      Or just eat normally a normal healthy diet and you wouldn’t be having these dangerous side effects

    • @samuelchuathecool
      @samuelchuathecool 4 года назад +16

      @@abegzz In this day and age a "normal healthy diet" is very difficult to quantify. Some say the traditional food pyramid choc full of processed wheat products is a normal healthy diet. This is about listening to your gut, and building up a tolerance to food, a bit at a time. After a fast your gut mucosal layer is much thinner, and certain foods will cause a lot of gastrointestinal distress if you're not careful. The aim is to build up to a "normal healthy diet". Trust me, if you've done a 7 day+ fast, you'll have sympathy for this person. I ate a single scotch egg (boiled egg, surrounded by a ground meat and breadcrumb casing) 4 days after finishing a 21 day fast. I couldn't sleep because of the stomach pain. Now I could eat that scotch egg no problemo, but it just goes to show that our bodies are especially sensitive to food intake after extended fasting.

    I dont usually dropping a comment on someones video but I would like to express my gratitude to this man because of an insane upload video! It is really a detailed content with aesthetic visuals. He used surface level of words so that everyone can understand it. And also, breaking down all the components using different studies as an evidence is somehow interesting or should i say a reliable one, rather than those creators who talk stupidly in giving details in IF. This is really a helpful video and I'm sending you my very huge thanks for that! Looking forward for your next videos! God bless!

      @@curtisfoster399 Right, he is a good youtuber and puts out a lot of great information. I don't think anyone has it all 100% figure out at this point. However in the context of the rice cakes comment, it is valid as it pertains to intermittent fasting, which is an entirely different situation than a 5+ day fast. Intermittent fasting is ok, but it is a completely different category than fasting more than 24 hours at a time.
