Italian vs German Soul - Alfa Romeo Giulia vs VW Arteon + DRAG RACE

- Alfa Romeo is famous for its good looks and engineered with soul. Now times have changed and Volkswagen has attempted to put some soul in one of its cars, the VW Arteon. We will be testing its practicality and show a short overview of the cabin highlights and technology. Then like we always do, put them next to each other to see which is quicker on a quarter mile.
Unfortunately in South Africa we only get two models on both the VW Arteon and the Alfa Romeo Giulia. We get a 2.0 TDI (130kW/174HP), 2.0TSI (206kW/276HP) in the VW Arteon and the Alfa Romeo Giulia is only available in 2.0T (147kW/197HP), 2.9T (375kW/502HP), we don't get the 206kW Q4 Giulia model here at all. Both cars we tested didn't have launch control and the Alfa has a weight advantage of more than 350kg. The reason why they were put together was because they have basically the same identical starting price and both are specified to very close selling prices. Remember that the Arteon is VW's attempt to do something different in term of design and packaging and we think it has a little bit of soul to it. SUV's are taking over the world and cars like this will become a rarity.

You should have taken Giulia Veloce that has 280hp, then it would be fair comparison in drag, otherwise senseless.
@@RealCarsSA Ok, i have to say that your videos are great, but this was pointless and horrible. 200hp rwd against 280hp awd can not be compared. Alfa Giulia is sport sedan (more like race car than daily car, and arteon is full of plastic another VW shit boring vehicle) and it is not made for practicality or boot space or something else that normal mortlas want from usual vehicle.

If you take a sport version of the VW, you need also pic the sport version of the alfa Romeo.
You are comparing the most powerful vw arteon engine 280 hp and awd against least powerful giulia 200 only rwd .. this is unfair .. it shoulf be giulia veloce 280 and it will not matter the rwd or the q4 .. that vw will get beated so easily .. no comparison between alfa romeo soul and any other car on the planet ..

Hi Jan Šicho, unfortunately in South Africa we don’t get the Giulia Q4 280, but the “normal” Giulia is the same price as the top spec Arteon, thats why we compared them. Funny enough the Arteon doesn’t have launch control, that made for some bad starts where the Giulia took the win, but if each had a perfect launch the Arteon took the win, only just... thank you for watching our videos. I think we using the word soul in the wrong context. Italians use soul along with passion, romance and a bit of arrogance. This makes an Alfa unique. German cars have practicality and sensibility. This comparison is a poor one I'm afraid. You buy an Alfa Romeo because you can, the same could be said for a BMW. You buy a VW for convenience but it's not a wow sort of car it's hard to stick out from the rest with a VW. An Alfa makes a statement regardless of the performance. But thanks for your bravery in doing this shoot out, at least you trying to revive what's left of South Africa's petrol head community. Next time bring some more character into your next video.

You must be that person who prefers to buy a broken old “luxury” car for the same price is a new up-to-date reliable car lol just because of an emblem. That’s a poor and stagnant mentality. Times are changing lad, car manufacturing is changing. Comparing this Alpha to a VW (people’s car) luxury model that offers the same if not more than this Alpha line is reality. Let the current times sink in to you lol by your statement, we can tell you don’t compare cars for what they are like a true mobile tech enthusiast… you simply drool for a brand and imaginary attention 🤣 you’re one of those guys. Go test drive an Arteon and see how it’ll change your mind. Owning an S5, an older CLA and a VW CC I can tell you I absolutely cherish all three for their own special ambiance.

FAKE NEWS! Not even a direct comparison.....might as well just through it against the QV Alfa. The Veloce / TI w/ Q4 would be the most direct comparison and I'll bet the Alfa will always win with driver's being equal.

280hp arteon is faster than 280hp alfa tho and i myself overtook it from rolling with golf gti 230hp (alfa had only driver and i was with 2 people)

I'm just impressed that they have cars, instead of all SUVs, at the Volkswagen dealership in this video. A car is like finding a needle in a haystack in my part of the world. It's depressing. My son has the Arteon and I have the gas powered 2.0L Giulia. In our case, the outcome would pretty much be the opposite of yours! But they are both gorgeous, high performance cars.
