  • We review an iBUYPOWER RDY system, looking at build quality, ability to configure BIOS properly, thermal, and gaming performance.

Comparing the iBUYPOWER pre-built "RDY" system to the Walmart build of the same price, iBUYPOWER does walk away looking good. Once you look beyond the parts listings and into configuration, though, the company makes several mistakes that it hopes to soon correct for future orders.

Steve, I have worked in a similar PC assembling companies and understand how they work. Most of the staff only have basic understanding on how to assemble and follow instructors teaching who would have been like them before. The QC has to check all assembling and settings which is why some of the problems have occur. Because of the pressure to complete a certain amount of systems a day assemblers and QC can easily overlook or forget to do things. The thing you should tell the SI is to have paper work instructions that they must tick and sign for the work that they have done and anyone who have basic knowledge of assembling PC must be further train before building complex systems.

I'd love for one of you folks to check Consumer Warranty with companies. I had the worse experience with AMD this past December. A person that only communicated when someone on the East Coast of North America was asleep. So I'd wake up to an email I'd fulfill that request send a reply wait till the next day do the next thing and then get the next reply. So it took 3 days to do what would have taken 3 hours had they been operating during normal business hours. Then I had to send it to them. From Canada to the US. Which meant it got held at Customs. When It arrived they misplaced it. I only found this out because I got a reminder that my Claim was about to expire. They then went looking for it after I freaked (a week after it was delivered). Once they found it the group in the US tested confirmed it was dead and replaced the Chip. Sent it off. I asked repeatedly for the tracking number. They said no it hadn't shipped they would send the tracking info once it does. 3 days passed and I got the chip in the mail. They never sent the tracking number. I found out that it actually shipped 8 hours before they said it hadn't shipped.
Once I got it in Early January I found out that both my board and chip had died (I think I know why) Sadly because it was early January I missed almost all the Sales to replace the board as the Board seemed to be out of warranty and I sure the hell wasn't going through that process again. I'm happy I was able to replace the chip but the process was insane. The Fact that AMD has no Phone Support and didn't think maybe putting a person in the Eastern Time Zone connected with someone that worked business hours some place in North America would be good I was dealing with Someone that worked business hours for between India and Germany. That is what pissed me off the most. Not being able to deal with things in a timely fashion.
I have to wonder how common that is. How many other companies have just piss poor customer support for warranty repair.

wast he i7-9700K have no hyper threading? I do not understand why that was taken out. and how it that going to effect hard core gaming when there is no HYPER THREADING. my old SAGER NOTEBOOK broke. to give you some idea how old that is its graphic card is GTX 880M I agree time for a upgrade.big time upgrade. Before the CES 2019 started I have been busy doing my research what to look for. something is not old and outdated and something made for the future. That is a tall order.909% of the 17.3" gaming notebook use out dated parts that I do not want to use and do not need to use. How do I fix the the problem that all the gaming notebook got a i7 CPU that runs at 2.2GHz or slower? my X99 motherboard got a i7 CPU offered me more service then that. What I done is FUCK everything about ASUS, HP and DELL that is a tone of fucking fat I cut out in one second..even II hate MSI PUBLIC RELATION I still look it up any way. 8 hours of research I found everything outdated. Also I know I am not going to get EQUALIZER for my audio. I know ACER done that 21X and $9000.00 its internal storage for the price is a joke. nothing is worse then a bad joke. a dead joke that make me yell out THAT IS SO FUNNY I FORGOT TO LAUGH!! there is 17.3" gaming notebook that ACER got. it was too expensive and outdated. then I gone to XOTICPC look at there SAGER 17.3" gaming notebook. they got great search engine there at XOTICPC pick a few start up x selection. every easy. why kind of notebook style and brand name SAGER and size and then what size. what CPU and what GPU very easy. and simple. then it goave me a long list to chose from. WOW that is a lot.however not as much as it was 6 years ago. I go over the list. "X" out anything too outdated and all the ones that are too expensive. look at medium and a bit lower price range. about the $2000.00 price range I did go over price a bit. one caught my eye after every thing I look at only one got my eye on. NP9175 What kind of a name is that? NP9175 dose not have a soul and dose not give the GAMING NAME PUNCH like DOMINATOR that sounds GAMING! NP9175 is the name oh boy ok lets see what under its bonnet. 17.3" mat screen 1080p G_SYNK Hmmmm sweet 144 FPS 70% NTSC I can upgrade to 4K NOOOOOO CPU i7-8700K WOW GREAT CHIP SET Z370????? REALLY? ALL RIGHT THAT IS COOL! GTX 1070 graphic card. SWEET! play with DIMS and remove internal storage. I got a RGB KEYBOARD. lets see the price on shipping. long winded information name addresss so on. it gave me the price for shipping $180.00 OK lets see I can do better look up two more dealers that got NP9175 GENTECHPC OHH what is with all these free upgrade for $0.01? IC DIAMOND check some fancy thrumal pads for GDDR5. 30 days dead pixel plan. CPU ram $10.00 for two sticks . remove internal storage devices CPU check. GTX 1070 check. then time to do the shipping cost. very buggy payment system. however I did get the price $80.00 for UPS 2nd day? WOW that is $100.00 sale cut off price. and about 100 times trying to pay. up. then its done I call him up start asking questions. all this is done one day before the CES 2019 started. working on payment and questions. he told me I am not getting GTX 1070 he cannot get it in. he blab out that sounded like GTX 2080. my mind turn in to the 3RD DEMENTION in DEAD DAA DAAA DAAAAAA DAAAAAA my brain is lost.. when I got in to bird brain OK. the auto emergency aux power click in and gone and use the super charger and turbo boost. my brain got its well needed power. GTX 2070 no RTX 2070? he goes like yes upgrade to RTX 2070 I going like WOW I HIT THE JACK POT OR SOMETHING? YES he hit me with a double whammy bad news 1)I have to wait 1/29/2019 for the launch and 2) wait a extra week for his delivery. talk about put on a holding pattern for landing for half a month for launch and another week for landing.. that is where I stay. a holding pattern for landing some times next month

I VERY MUCH APPRECIATE this as a viewer and wish that more content creators would do this. This actually got me thinking about my own videos that I will be making in the future and love the idea of having an indicator to the viewer of how long a particular slide will be onscreen. Good work. Love the videos and competent and thorough explanation through each of the steps and LOVE the data that you capture.

Maybe a little hard on the comparison of Walmart to iBuyPower. The iBuyPower issues were easily fixable. The Walmart PC used vastly inferior components that there would be no easy fix for. The unfortunate part of the iBuyPower build is that a novice may never even know they are leaving performance on the table. The issues are an easy fix for a enthusiast but then those people probably build.
Maybe you need to do a "Things to do when you get a new system" Video. Even a first time builder might miss some of the bios setting you mentioned. And many people probably have never considered updating the bios itself.

I've bought two PCs from iBP. The first one was a good build and had no issues. The second one had multiple issues.
First was the BIOS like in this video. I had even paid for overclocking but all they did was click the automatic overclock button.
Next was that they used my SSD as an ISRT drive and put Windows on my HDD.
The next problem was that they didn't seat the cooler properly on the CPU. At first I thought it had become unseated during shipping, but when I took it off to remount it there was only thermal paste on half of the CPU. Half of the CPU hadn't even made contact. That means they didn't even test the overclock they put on the CPU because if they had they would have realized something was wrong.
The final problem was the motherboard. I didn't notice this till years later, but they had put one of the RAM sticks in the wrong slot. I moved it to the proper slot and when I turned it on it went into an infinite boot loop. I switched the RAM stick back and it booted again with no problems. The board had a bad RAM slot. The fact they put the RAM in the wrong slot means they knew the board was defective and still sent it out to me. By the time I realized this it was too late to send it back.

Gamers nexus & Linus media group are the reason's I won't buy a pre built computer. The reasoning is because it shouldn't take two major youtubers for companies to make changes for the better. These pre builds are supposed to be done by AKA professionals. It's the same reason some brings me their car to be worked on. They want a professional to do the work and expect their car to be in original factory working condition when they get it back( assuming they do the repairs after the diagnosis.) And my standard it anything less then better then original factory condition is unacceptable for me. NOTE: Original factory condition in the automotive repair world is anything on the vehicle a mechanic or technician works on. Example would be if you replace the engine then the engine needs to be as if it came off the assembly line and run as the engineer intended it too.

I used to work at a computer parts company which did assembly of parts into a full computer for like 40 euros or something per build. I was 15 at the time and assembling about 8 PCs a day for 3,50 euro/hour. For every system I had to check if the parts would fit, then build it and try to cable manage (poorly) with not much time budgeted for cable management. After that I had to test the system for issues with stuff like Memtest86. After that another inspection, cleaning the computer of fingerprints and packing it for shipping.
I can tell you, I did not give a single fuck about your system. Due to the immense time pressure and performance targets I had I had to do an acceptable job at a fast pace. Most customers wouldn't look on the inside anyway. I didn't even have to install Windows or do any other shit luckily. I lost count how many times a fucking Scythe Mugen cut my hands because it was such a cheap POS and all customers chose it because it was cheap. This type of work sucks at the wages these "professionals" work at. Don't expect too much from them.

I used the information in this video and others to settle on a custom ibuypower build. I can say the ordering process was good with a good web site and ample part choices. A chat with a rep went very well. I'm waiting on delivery now. Thanks for the valuable information your channel provides. I know I could part source it and build it myself but I'd rather let someone else handle that and don't mind paying a fair price for the service.

I notice that they didn't orient the fans in the same way. That may not seem like a big deal, but with those rebranded Thermaltake Riing Trio fans, you can't change the lighting order in the software. So if you wanted to use a pre-made profile, they would be off by 90 degrees, which would annoy the crap out of me.

Went with an EVGA card for my upgrade for the same reason, better customer support though there were better performing GPUs for lower prices out there (MSI for example can last longer and had non trivial performance advantage).

I hate the current preferred business model for quality control. HATE. What is the current preferred business model for quality control? To do ZERO quality control, but give every customer a survey about their product or service. You probably read that and thought "no way man." But think about all the surveys you get from everything. They do that because they fired all the actual quality control people. Some upper management person justified their 6 digit salary by cutting all those quality control people from the payroll, while spinning it publicly as an added customer perk. This business model *does not work*. Get real quality control people, or better yet get random 3rd party inspections by somebody outside of the company that has absolutely no incentive to ignore possible costly issues (see Florida pedestrian bridge failure).

And if you really care about employees "probably" being underpaid (sweet appeal to emotion, bro), you should also boycott this company. A few years ago I bought a new prebuilt computer that should have had a 1tb HD and a 500-watt PSU, what I got was a 2tb HD and a 750 watt PSU. The hard drive and PSU were the same make and series as listed in the specs just larger and more powerful. I was pleased but curious about this free and unexpected upgrade so I emailed the manufacturer asking about it. they told me that their supplier was unable to deliver the 1tb HD in time and the contract had a penalty clause making it cheaper to send the larger HD than to be late. The reason for the PSU upgrade was simply that they ran out of 500-watt PSUs so they substituted 750s on a few units to keep assembly on schedule. So a few hundred people got a free HD upgrade and 12 got both a PSU and an HD upgrade. I thought that this was pretty lucky but not nearly as much as getting what sounded like a straight answer from a large company.

I enabled XMP on my system and my RAM benchmarked slower so then I disabled it again. CPUs are on demand frequency today so what they're clocked at doesn't matter. It is going to change anyways.

Thanks to you and Linus for making videos digging into ready-made systems. I wish I had done more research before taking the plunge. I'm not very happy with my ibuypower PC, picked up just before Christmas of 2019 (almost a year after this video was posted). It's the Trace 2 Pro 112a, purchased from Newegg, and it arrived with many more issues than you ran into.
It has a 3700X and RX 5700 XT, but came with Nvidia drivers. I checked because stability was non-existent. After installing AMD drivers and removing Nvidia's, I am still having stability issues, including occasional boot cycling and black screens. Sometimes, it will not connect to the internet, though I'm not sure if that's a related issue.
Cooling is abysmal. They replaced the stock Wraith Prism with an $8 Deepcool unit that does not keep the CPU below 45c at idle and 90c during gaming, which may be related to the fact that it was sent with two case fans, instead of 3 that were advertised. The case itself has limited area for drawing in air, which may restrict cooling no matter how many fans are installed. The internal case temp must be really high, because the 5700 XT Mech OC is constantly going 3,000+ RPM to keep temps around 88c, as well.
I haven't dug into the BIOS or updated them because of my nervousness over screwing them up as a novice.
This is my first gaming PC, so I went prebuilt because I was nervous of screwing something up doing it myself. Also, Black Friday deals were killer. In retrospect, I should have spent a few hundred more and took the time to build it correctly.

I was an iBuyPower customer. The summer of 2020 I spent north of $4k for a ASUS Prime A299-AII, maxed ram, 2080ti, a Corsair AIO, plus twin HDDs, in a Be Quiet Pure 600, etc... Two months later it arrived. The power supply failed on powerup, the two HDs were dead, the AIO died five months later - so I just replaced the entire set into a new case because the AIO was oriented vertically/lateral to the CPU (thanks for your video on that - THAT is what got me to purchase a new case). The result? I am a new DYI gamer (flight sim) and will be doing all DYI going forward. Frankly, it's much easier to do it yourself rather than spend a pile of money on questionable service. I'm an architect by training and have real issue with what some folks are putting out. Thanks for your videos (and useful guidance). I'll be purchasing one of your sweatshirts now.... =)

I couldn't afford for my PC to be down for any length of time while while I upgraded due to business obligations and being self employed. The only negative was that they front mounted my AIO radiator instead of putting it in the designated space on the top of the chassis. I fixed that myself in a few minutes though. I even had a 20% off coupon at the time so the premium I paid was rather small.

Some of the wiring in the back of the case could’ve been neater, but they had everything hooked up and configured correctly although xmp was not enabled. Plus It cost less than the shopping cart I had put together when I was going to build it myself, free 2 day shipping, and a one stop warranty. power is why it drops that far.. voltage/current limit in bios (stock settings) is limiting the cpu at the same voltage (likely 1.42v like mine was) so it had to drop that much to keep power below the given range (even tho the cpu is stable at lower voltages for any given freq it will use the "max" voltage from the clock "range" when running avx loads)

There are a lot of valid reasons to buy from someone else. I can build my own bookshelf competently, but I'd rather pay someone else to do it so I can do other things in that afternoon instead. Similarly, I could build a relative a computer competently, but I don't want to be on the line for support. I'd refer them to a pre-built, then let that company deal with service calls.

So some kid tells their parent they want that one with the cool lights and stuff and parent who knows nothing about it buys it for said kid's birthday or Christmas or something
