A kid I played with was the best player our age in Edmonton. When he got to bantam AA (there was no AAA at that time) he scored more goals in his first year than the second highest scorer in the league had points. Everyone thought he’d make it to the show. He topped out at 5’6” and never got there. There are no guarantees. That’s why anytime I see a story on some 8 y/o who’s great I take with a grain of salt. You’re not in the NHL until you’re there, and you’re not a great player until you’re a great player. A lot can happen along the way. Other sports, drugs, partying, girls. There are a ton of sacrifices to be made to become a pro athlete, especially in hockey.

I young man I knew growing up in Prince George, BC, turned into quite a phenom. As a 15 year-old (already 6'3" and over 200 pounds!) playing junior B he scored a hat-trick in his first game and went on to light up the scoring leader board. A few weeks into the season he was given a try-out with the defunct New Westminster Bruins of the Western Hockey League. The coach, Punch McLean, told future NHL star Barry Beck to lay it on the kid to see what he could take. Beck hammered him hard into the boards, and when the kid's father saw that, he took him home. He finished the year in junior B but never went any farther. I always wondered what all happened there because I know the kid was very tough, and I think he could have been a great one.

Easily the best player I've ever played with and reffed, Connor McClennon(Philadelphia Flyers 2020 178th Overall). They literally had to change the League Bylaws to let him play as a double under ager(if what my parents say is true) because no one in his age group could even TOUCH him. Dudes got magic hands and a laser beam for a shot, he was a call-up to my Major Bantam team as like a Minor Peewee age and he made us look like we weren't even fuckin trying. He's not a well known child prodigy, but from the perspective of everyone in Wainwright, AB he's the best hockey player to ever come out of there.

    >[Lemieux was] a monster compared to Gretzky
The Great One was rumored to have weighed 125 pounds in his first year of Junior and in his first year in the WHA he weighed 150 pounds. "So thin the wind would blow him over" was said about Gretzky and the WHA Winnipeg Jets passed on Gretz, saying that he was too thin, and most parents in minor hockey said Gretzky would never make the NHL.

The AAA York Simcoe express would have practices and sometimes games in the Aurora Community Centre where my Minor hockey team played at home. I was able to watch McDavid playing a year or two above his age division on the express the odd time they were scheduled after our games. You would hear about Bobby Orr (his agent) being in the arena but I never saw him. I remember seeing McDavid ripping a casual slap shot from just inside the blue line top shelf a few minutes into the game, before my parents had picked me up. Even at 12-15 y/o he was a legend around town, some of my friends 2 years younger would see/meet at house parties.

Would like to point out that although Canadians draft numbers have dropped, Canadian players still dominate the draft and represent the highest percentage of NHL players, also also, the reason other countries hockey programs have gotten alot better is due to hockey Canada exporting the game and Canadian hockey manuals to hockey countries to increase competition and so other countries would fall in love with the game. Alot of Canadian coaches in Europe as well as Russia and Asia. It's amazing to me how Canada shared it's heart/hockey with the world

After leading his Vancouver giants for many seasons, he was drafted by his hometown team the Edmonton oilers. His career is still young and I think he has some potential to play full time in the NHL. A guy from my hometown, Chatham, Ontario broke Gretzky's novice record. He scored 413 goals in a single season. he broke the single season points record in NCAA playing for Michigan in the 89-90 season, previously held by Ed Olczyk. Notsure what happened, but he didn't get drafted to the NHL until the 12th round in 1991 by the Rangers and wouldn't play in the NHL until 96-97 where he played only 3 games for the Maple Leafs getting zero points. Went to the IHL Houston Aeros after that and led the league in scoring with 106 points in 77 games and received league's MVP award. played 3 seasons there then retired. He's now an assistant coach for the Oilers!

Growing up in Vegas has been interesting to say the least, being such a big hockey fan, to this day vegas only has 4 public rinks and only 3 of which are nhl sized, anyways one player that is probably the biggest child prodigy from here is Jackson Lackas, who just went 2nd overall in this years whl draft, Vegas hockey is on the rise.

The best player born in my hometown Rouyn-Noranda has got to be Pierre Turgeon. 1327 pts in 1294 games.
Close to him, Éric Desjardins as a defenseman.
For the goalies, we have to go with Jacques Cloutier, for sure.

Gretzky by far. His folks live around the corner from my folks. Well at least Walt still does. Although Wayne’s was older than me his brother’s went to my high school. As I got older I played in some beer leagues with guys that played with Wayne or against when they were younger. They said he was just on another level and was a great player/ kid. Kudos to all others that made this list but Wayne’s point totals speak for themselves.

I’m from Kingston. Shane Wright plays for the Frontenacs currently but he is not from here. I would have to say that there is some debate as to who the best is from our region. Don Cherry, Doug Gilmour, Kirk Muller, Ken Linesman, Mike Smith, Jay McKee, Jay McClement, Alyn McCauley, and Jayna Hefford are all from the area. I would argue that Jayna is the best of the pack. Although Taylor Hall grew up here he was born in Calgary. He may or may not count.
